I am visiting Boston for my birthday and chose Parker House because of its incredible history - especially knowing that President JFK and Jackie got engaged here. On my birthday, Jean (the host) provided exceptional service. He called me in advance to let me know that the section of the restaurant where JFK proposed wouldn't be open during our dinner. He also promised to let me tour that area afterward, which he graciously did. That extra effort made my birthday celebration feel incredibly special. The Parker Bar used to be a library and it's where Charles Dickens used to come to write, and was frequented by most presidents and even Martin Luther King, jr! The food was fantastic! The clam chowder was phenomenal, and the lobster roll was absolutely amazing. My husband enjoyed the chopped salad, and while the salmon was just okay, the overall meal was excellent. As a thoughtful birthday surprise, they brought me a complimentary piece of Boston cream pie, which was such a nice touch - especially since it was invented there!! This hotel/bar is right on the Freedom trail' and worth a stop for the beauty, the food and history! I loved every minute of it and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the city. read more

I inadvertently booked a hotel room in the VERY HOTEL in which the Boston Creme Pie was invented. We therefore could not leave Boston's borders without sampling THE ORIGINAL. We weren't exactly planning on eating dinner at the restaurant just for the sake of trying the dessert so, it was much to my delight to discover that you can also order a slice from the bar which brings me to this review. It was actually after a food tour that we made our way up the stairs to Parker's bar. We took a seat amongst many other copatrons enjoying various concoctions from the bar. Their menu is cool, original drinks or conventional drinks with a twist are organized into the main ingredient / flavor. I ordered the banana cocktail bc I'm ALWAYS a slut for anything banana-flavored. My mini banana ordered their version of the michelada. I'm actually now not even sure why we ordered drinks bc we were really there for the BCP. Who am I kidding, of course I do. Now I'm no BCP expert. My familiarity to the creme pie consists of dunkin donuts' BCP donuts and the one time I attempted to make it in college. Vanilla cake with chocolate glaze and CUSTARD tho????down. My drink wasn't even worth finishing. The michelada, however, was delicious. The cream pie was disappointing. It's accompanied by some black berries and a MOLECULE of whipped cream. The edges had a texture resembling coconut instead of smooth chocolate which I would have preferred to have been on the entire outside. I also would've preferred if the size was bigger (It's not the first time) and if there was more custard. It's not that it was bad, I just expected more from the literal place it was invented. The inside of the Omni is actually quite classic. I've never stayed at the hotel, only been tot he bar but love the atmosphere. The drinks aren't too terribly priced considering they are strong. Service was actually nice and friendly. Our main reason coming was to try the Boston Cream pie. IT was.....ok. Visually, great design. But taste wise, it was almost like it was sitting in a fridge pre made. The fruit was way too cold and the chocolate on the plate a big hard. Same with the cream swirled in, was not fresh tasting. It was good don't get me wrong, but when its coined one of the best in the area and felt like it was pulled from a stack of pre-made options in the fridge, we were definitely let down. There was a loud German man spitting out cuss words in there when we were there though, and they didn't do anything to hush him up. Every other word was an F bomb and bashing everywhere in the world but germany. We only stayed for one drink because eventually it got to a point of being annoying as ever. read more

While staying at the Omni, we stopped into Parker's bar twice. The first time was between lunch and dinner. The bartender was the only one on duty and he came right over to our table with menus. After some discussion we placed an order for drinks and snacks. The drinks came out first. Beers are served in bottles. My negroni was served in a martini glass, which is not the correct form, but it was good none the less. The Sliders were larger than expected and very tasty. The cheese plate had more crackers than there was cheese to put on them. The 'fresh fruit' was green grapes. There were three small wedges of cheese. A medium soft goat cheese, a blue cheese and a hard sheep milk cheese. The second time we popped in after dinner and the room was full. We joined another group at one of the long, high top tables as this was the only space that would fit our group and a waitress came right over and gave us menu's. She was very pleasant, and kept an eye on us. We ordered cappuccino's and Boston creme pie. The cappuccino's had a huge head of foam which over flowed the cup. This may seem like a nice presentation, but is rather ridiculous. Besides the fact that cappuccino should be hot milk that has a bit of 'body', how are you supposed to drink this without getting foam all over your face? Answer: you can't. Also, they sprinkled cinnamon all over the top, which is completely inappropriate for a cappuccino. If you are going to put anything on top, it should be unsweetened cocoa, but really, you should leave it plain unless requested to add the cocoa. The Boston creme pie presentation is nice. The plate, cake, and sauces on the plate are cold so you know these are kept in a refrigerator pre-assembled. The cake had the dried out texture of having been uncovered for some time. The sauces are very necessary to give the cake some taste and moisture. After reading all the differing reviews, I was interested in finding out for myself whether this cake is good or no. The answer: no. If you like cold, dry, tasteless cake, then this is for you! If you are going to try it yourself, definitely get it 'in house' not 'take away' as the sauces are really necessary to the experience. The bar itself is quite a nice atmosphere and the service was good during both our visits. If you want a drink in a nice place, I would recommend Parker's. read more

We loved popping in here to sample some of the famous Parker House goodies. Don't you dare pass on their delicious cocktail menu. And don't you dare dare dare pass on their soft and silky Parker House Rolls. I double dare you to pass on their crispy crab cake, unbelievably rich clam chowder, rich French Onion soup, or their chicken parm sliders. Oh, and the Boston Cream Pie - incredible. I like this place a lot. They may not have draft beer but they do have bottles and they'll pour it into a glass for you. The food: I've had the French onion soup and the Boston cream pie. Both super delicious!! The soup is the perfect remedy for a night of libations or the freezing cold. On a recent business trip to Boston, I made a point of going to the birthplace of Boston cream pie and Parker house rolls. Boy was I disappointed! The rolls tasted stale and bland, worse than the frozen ones you find at the grocery store. The Boston cream pie was clearly not fresh. The "cream" if you can call it that was dry. The cake itself was hard. The whole experience was enough for me to write-off Boston cream pies completely. However, the next day I had an AMAZING slice of Boston cream pie at Legal Seafood. Maybe their chef can give cooking lessons to the Parker chefs. The one menu item that actually tasted good was the lobster grilled cheese sandwich. The bread was perfectly toasted. The melding of the melted cheese and the lobster were great! If you want a great grilled cheese sandwich go to Parker's. If you want the dishes they are famous for: Boston cream pie and rolls, go elsewhere. Even your local grocery store is probably better. read more

Everyone tells you to try the Boston Cream Pie at the origin - the Parker House - the oldest hotel in America. Straight up - we had coffee and Boston Cream Pie - and were disappointed. With so much Italian food in Boston you'd think they'd have better coffee. Maybe the two have nothing to do with each other but there has to be better coffee to brew in the city. In all fairness, we were there on Friday afternoon and sat at the bar - perhaps we got the previous day's pies. People also kept telling us that the pies were small, individual sized. They are small but shareable. As for the bar, I'm wondering if they're trying to keep the old world charm - and dirt - by keeping that old, old pub look. Well, I'm thinking that the dust on the windows and window sills inside are from 1776 - definitely old and dirty. Perhaps the pies would be better with dinner in the restaurant. I don't recommend them in the bar. I guess stick to drinks and sports in the bar. read more

I really loved this place. This bar is located in the Omni Parker House hotel, and it has an old/modern charm to it. My parents and I arrived at went to table, BUT I wish they have a sign or something that says "open seating". We were standing awkwardly at the entrance with a bunch of other people and there were only like three waiters working that night. Our waiter so extremely nice and his service was great. This place even makes tap water better than other places. We obviously got the Boston cream pie, because of their reputation for having the best pie in the city. I honestly didn't expect much but it was actually really delicious I can eat a hundred of them. They used dark chocolate and the custard and cake was not dense, instead it was really really fluffy. I would only come back to Boston to eat this Boston cream pie and the lobster rolls at Neptune Oyster, nothing else. read more

Nice ambience but that's it. First we sat at a table and were given menus, then nothing for 15 minutes. Saw others come in, sat and with drinks in the meantime. Finally....Husband ordered a gin and tonic that was passable though a bit watered down. I ordered a coke and a coffee to have with the Boston cream pie and lemon tart we ordered. The soda was flat, no carbonation at all, the coffee was cold so I asked for a fresh cup. After another 10-15 minutes i flagged down our server to ask about my coffee, she said she thought i just didn't want it. Ugh. So, another 10 minutes later fresh coffee! Yay! So now to dessert, the Boston cream pie (cake) is actually nice and light, i liked it but it really doesn't have any flavor- husband agreed. Meh. The lemon curd tart was terrible- like it'd been in the bottom of the refrigerator for a month. Should never had been served. My son ordered the chocolate cake which was delicious, the only thing worth trying here. Service was so bad she never came to check on us and we had to flag her down again to get the check. Needless to say we were out after that. Really a shame, such a beautiful hotel and nice place for drinks but just really failed so badly in every way. read more
