Both bartenders were welcoming and personable and checked in multiple times without being intrusive. I tried one of the featured cocktails, New Sparrow, and it entailed one of my favorite things -- a chef's butane torch -- which enhanced the rosemary sprig. The drink was fantastic and well balanced. I selected the seared swordfish entree nestled on a bed of couscous and with the addition of arugula, orange glaze, roasted tomato medley, and almonds. The highlight was the couscous, as the fish was slightly rubbery. Restaurant is lovely and overall seems to be a hidden gem. Nice ambiance, relaxed, and cozy. So was super excited seeing mussel as part of a restaurant name. Sure enough, they have 6 dishes using mussels, with sizes coming in appetizer ($16) and entree ($20). What fills you up in a mussel dish is going to be the bread and french fries, so figured ordering three appetizers for me would be fine (Moles Basquaise, Curry Cream, and Ponzu). My wife does not like mussels, so she ordered 'the Dip' $17.99 (a french dip on a fresh baguette), which came with french fries, so I didn't have to order any. My wife liked her sandwich fine, and she liked her bread much more than I liked it. The fries were just OK as well, a bit greasy and overcooked. The same bread came in half loaf with each of the apps. Would have worked a lot better if the bread had been toasted considering it tasted like regular white bread without any bite or flavor. As for the mussels, they ranged in size from being very small (probably shouldn't have been served) to small, and because of the shrinkage during cooking, there really wasn't much meat. I loved the Basquaise sauce and would absolutely get it again with pasta or rice, just something more filling and better than the accompanying bread. The ponzu and curry cream didn't work...both mention asian influences and I really didn't see it. I intentionally hadn't ordered the meuniere (french white wine and garlic butter) which is what they use for pommes frittes. That would have been a much better choice. As for the service, she was just...there. Not really able to answer any questions, and just worrying about bringing our food out. Didn't really do anything to make it a better experience, considering the nature of this restaurant. I understand sourcing is often at the mercy of whatever the supplier can send you....but these PEI mussels just weren't great. Maybe expand the menu to include other types of mussels (such as New Zealand green mussels) that come frozen, but are consistent in their size and quality. The three sauces I tried would have gone better with them...they were too heavy to take advantage of the flavorful but delicate juice that a live mussel releases as it is being cooked...but would have been good with the meatiness of the NZ variety.

Several Kentucky natives told us that we had to try a Hot Brown during our visit, and since it was literally created at the Brown Hotel, this seemed like the logical spot. The actual Hotel has some gorgeous interiors, especially upstairs in the lobby. We didn't see that area until after our meal, so when we laid eyes on the Lobby Bar & Grill, we knew immediately that that was where we SHOULD have gone for this Hot Brown dish. J. Graham's, I'm sorry to say, doesn't have the history and personality of the rest of the building and just looks like a generic breakfast spot you'd find in any hotel. It probably exists solely because the other dining options in the hotel aren't open until later and they want to give tourists and their own customers a place to eat at all times of the day, which isn't a terrible reason in my book. But it's also unfortunately not very good, and the dirty walls and overall meh appearance of the establishment just make it very clear that the hey day for this hotel overall was decades ago. The service was the biggest miss here. Our waitress was scatterbrained, often not around or around but hanging out with co-workers or talking up other customers. It was honestly pretty mystifying because when she DID come by, she was often overly apologetic and trying to make amends. But the best way to make amends is not to have to keep doing that throughout the meal. She forgot my friend's coffee (didn't write anything down when we ordered, which is fine if you remember everything but...) and when my chum asked what was in the hummus (one of just three apps), she didn't know and had to go ask someone in the kitchen. That's arguably a nitpick and she DID try to figure it out, but the lunch menu is pretty small and it was a little odd that her menu knowledge was that limited. The bigger problem was that we were in there for over half an hour longer than we wanted to be because she wouldn't come by our table. I actually actively looked for her on the way to the bathroom so I could remind her to come to our table, but instead found her off to the side gossiping with other staff. Not a good look at all. So this might have been an overall positive experience if some of the hospitality from the hotel had spilled over here. The Bourbon Barrel Fries and the Two Timer, featuring Smoked Bourbon Hummus (bourbon tends to be the theme of your days in this town, I've found) were both really good, and I probably ate more of those than the actual entree. The fries were cooked perfectly and were well seasoned/addictive. The Hot Brown was fine for what it was (we split it to try). It's basically a dramatic turkey melt, with slices of turkey coated in cheese and other sauces. It also came with strips of bacon on top, which on a personal palate level I didn't think really helped the dish so I barely nibbled on those. It's definitely a solid entry but it wasn't mind-blowing for either of us. Maybe it's just from where we come from in the Northeast, but I'm conditioned to like my turkey with accompanying stuffing, and usually in the latter part of November. You might have a completely different experience with better service, but I'd still recommend going upstairs for any dining. Of the 10 friends only two said the food was OK. The rest were very disappointed. My food arrived 45 minutes to an hour after everyone else's my burger was raw and I had ordered it well done. I took one bite and threw it away. When Management came to ask how everything was I deferred to my other family members because I did not want to complain then they specifically ask me and I was honest. Instead of offering to comp or refund my meal, they offered to remake my burger, but we had already been there for 70 minutes and it took 55 for my burger to come out. They brought me a beet juice which was delicious. I just sold my café four months ago in Montana and anytime a customer was not completely satisfied. I comped their meal or reimbursed them for the purchase price. I love the people here. I love the concept, but today was a complete disappointment and I know nine people will probably never return.
