The food is pretty good for bar food. Personally I am not a real fan of bar food. Prefer a more contemporary, health conscious menu. In November we moved into The Depot. Try to take advantage of the location. Every so often I walk somewhere and get my daughter or husband a sandwich for lunch or dinner. One time there was no sauce on the buffalo chicken wrap although the woman on the phone asked what type I wanted. Today when I went I ordered the same thing. I asked to check to see if the sauce was on it this time. Whoa! Thought I had asked her to walk on a tight rope to NYC! So bothered. So not nice or friendly. Can't imagine having a person acting like that working for me. I have always been a ridiculous tipper. I have been told I have no concept of money when it comes to tipping. First time in my life I walked out without tipping. :( Makes me sad because I love enjoying people. read more

I was back in Cedar Rapids visiting family and we stopped by Parlor City for dinner and drinks. I am always curious to see what's new in the Newbo area, so was excited to check this place out. I will definitely say I was impressed. I spent a few years in Des Moines, and am really looking forward to seeing downtown Cedar Rapids transition more like what Des Moines has. Parlor City was excellent. There was live jazz music, which was pretty awesome! They have a great beer selection; tons of local Iowa craft beer, from Des Moines, to Decorah, and the surrounding Cedar Rapids area. They have tons of space and an outdoor patio that when I'm back during the Summer season, I will definitely have to check out. The food was delicious. As I was expecting your typical bar food, I feel they go above and beyond. Their menu is huge, but yet unique. I like how they point out the top choices as well as pair a type of beer with each food item. I tried the Juicy Lucy, delicious, and I had one of the most delicious Spinach, chicken, bacon, and pecan salad! I will definitely be back on my next visit to the greater Cedar Rapids :) read more

Came in for lunch on a Sunday, had a good crowd, seated right away, had an amazing server! She was right on it for drinks, and food. She was great with suggestions for food and beverage when asked. This is my go-to restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Great beer selection, reasonable prices, great atmosphere. The Juicy Lucy needs some work though. We love the menu and beer selection here - who doesn't? Our service has always been spectacular too and we really have no room for complaint. The only reason for the 4 stars is because the Juicy Lucy could use some help. Just put some cheese in that sucker! Honestly, one of the best places in town. Come here if you want the best selection of craft beers in Cedar Rapids. In fact it *may* have the best selection of craft beers in all of Iowa as of 2014. I know it has better selection than El Bait Shop in Des Moines, and anywhere I've been in Quad Cities. The food is good, the service can kinda suck, the atmosphere is nice, with the exception of the acoustics when they have bands play. Wow what a sad evening, I'm at Hy Vee grocery store buying antacid after eating at PC. It's got great ambiance with a good selection of beers but the food we were served tonight tasted and smelled of old grease real bad! The waiter was pleasant, the gal that told us we had a 15 minute wait was very nice. The grumpy, dumpy, short little troll behind the bar needs a new career path. She was a complete witch with no personality and not happy at all! They weren't that busy, I've seen it way worse. I've truly had better burgers and fries at McDonald's. They used to have some good apps that have been taken off the menu, and a great BLT that's no longer on the menu. The juicy Lucy burger and breaded tenderloin were bad, really bad. Went here on a Wednesday night around 6:00pm. Glad I did because it filled up fast after that. Sat at the bar. They have a fairly large selection of draft beer, and I must say probably one of the most unique and varied selections of draft beer I've seen. If you are a beer geek in CR, this is a must check out spot. The bartenders were super prompt and polite, always ready to let you taste a beer,,,, even bringing me a taste of something they thought I might like. I had the Spicy Lucy Burger and Sweet Potato Fries. Food is standard pub grub, not a gastropub, but have not had anything bad either. You go here mostly for the beer. Second time eating here; first time was fine (3 star) but tonight a step back... We each had a bean burger - mine was the guoc version and paid extra for the onion rings. Not the kitchen's best work: bean burger was mushy (for those that know veggie burgers, they should be crispy like a beef burger) and not hot, tasted ok but...; the 2 tomato slices were not edible - it's August and good tomatoes are abundant...except here; the onion rings (pls understand, this was an impulse order as I love a good onion ring about 2x per year instead of something healthier)... Golden brown (yea!) but soggy and only partially cooked on inside (yikes!)... I should have gone with a salad or slaw. My wife's bean burger was disappointing as well. The place was packed - racking up big revenue; perhaps the kitchen was so overwhelmed that they didn't take time to LOOK at what was on the plate (bad tomato and wilted lettuce), and no effort to test the surface texture or internal temp of the burger, and not tasting an onion ring now and then... If any of these kitchen basics had been done my plate would be better. Instead they served something below McDonalds quality. Summary - SPEND your dollars at the many other choices you have, and check back here in 6 months to see if improved... For now skip them. Try REDS in NoLiberty they have a great beet burger... Don't know why this place is so popular. I've eaten there a couple times before and it was ok but this last time was terrible. I had the Blues Jam burger with Frips and dip. Burger was very dry and hardly any cheese on it , frips were ok but several of them were soggy. The fried pickle chips appetizer were tough and not very tasty. My grandson got the chicken strips and fries. First order came out very over cooked and the fries looked like the bottom of the bag, just small rocks. Sent that order back, second one was only slightly less over cooked and he even commented that the chicken tasted bad. I took a bite and it was dry and tough. So to be fair I don't hate this place as much as the review might imply but good lord...my experience there tonight was the WORST! It's Saturday night and my wife and I roll up about 6:15. We notice through the window there are some empty tables so we should get seated right away. We walk in and immediately sense this will not go well. There are about 3 couples just standing there waiting for a host to seat them. As waitresses pass by repeatedly without acknowledging our existence I finally flag someone down and find out there is a waiting list. No big deal, I see empty tables and there are only 2 names ahead of mine. I grab a couple beers and wait. But as people leave nobody is getting seated. Then I notice "table reserved" signs being placed on the tables as they are cleaned off. I guess this wouldn't be that big of a deal but a lot of people seem to be hanging out after they finish eating because there is a band later in the night. I ask the redhead waitress who is making the list how long I should expect to wait since every open table is now "reserved". "Just be patient, any minute now". At this point we have been waiting about 40 minutes and notice the list getting longer and longer, but nobody is getting seated. And the reserved tables are still empty. And the staff is completely oblivious (granted, they were understaffed). At this point another table empties and a "reserved" sign is placed on it. OK, time to seriously complain to somebody. We flag down the redhead and here is what she says, "Well they sat at a reserved table but agreed to finish up before 7:30, when the party has it reserved for". Remember, we came in around 6:15, and couldn't be seated because the tables were reserved - FOR 7:30!!! Good business model idiots. You could have seated and fed about 6 tables before your private party came. Instead you decided to make a list for people to stand around and wait (who thought they were about to be seated) and get pissed as they stare at empty tables and are told " just be patient, honey, just a few minutes". We finally explained what was going on to another waitress but it was too late. She apologized profusely but the damage had been done. It was almost 7:30 and my wife was livid. All the others who were waiting were either pissed or leaving. So we waited over an hour as we stared at empty tables. And if ANYONE would have said "go ahead and take that table, just know that we have it reserved at 7:30" we would have been fine with that. Instead we left hungry and pissed, my wife vowing to never step foot in there again. So if the owner/manager is reading this: 1) properly staff your place -especially Saturday night during the NFL playoffs and a band scheduled to play, and 2) if you are going to take reservations at 7:30, don't set the "reserved" signs at 6:00. read more

Sigh... I've got a story. Hang in there with me. I called Parlor City to reserve room for a party of 25-30 at least two weeks before the event. I called back one week prior and changed the number to 40-50. I was assured everything was AOK. They called me back two days before and confirmed everything was set up. They were SO nice and seemed so organized. Yay! Then... We got there a little early on Saturday (we were scheduled to be there from 3-7). They couldn't figure out where to put us and finally got it worked out. They took us back to the "Green Room" and I was super annoyed to discover that it was basically a pass-through room with 2 four top tables, 2 two tops and 2 six tops. Which equals 24 chairs. Which... Is significantly LESS than 40-50. Unfortunately, there wasn't really anything to do but suck it up. They were overbooked. So THEN they started seating people NOT with our party in the already way too small room (that had pizza crusts and dirty napkins all over the floor which I picked up, because it looked disgusting). So our server suggested that we overflow into the next room until another party was scheduled to arrive at 7. Since it was a group party and there STILL weren't enough tables and chairs, we kept getting shuffled around. Now fast forward through the next 3.5 hours where our main server was unfriendly to every single table, got annoyed when we went to the bar to get drinks (because it was taking 30 minutes for her to come back with them if we ordered from her), kept asking us to move to different tables and actually refused to take a good order from an elderly couple at 6 pm because she said the party was over at 6:30. Finally, at 6:30 the remaining members of our party were awkwardly standing in the original party room (hallway) trying to gather our belongings since there wasn't room for us. The server approached me and asked if I was the head of the party. I told her it was my going away party and asked what she needed. She (rudely) told me that a "bunch" of our guests had "walked out" without paying and that she was going to need for me to pay for it. REALLY? No questions asked, just automatically assumed that the people on TWELVE DIFFERENT TICKETS dined and dashed?! Hmm... Was it 80 year old Aunt Rose? My 68 year old Dad? The Operations team from my spouse's company? I asked for the tickets (and she acted annoyed that I would ask to see them) when she came back it turned out that every ticket was for a person standing right there in front of her sassy little face who had been ousted from their table. So... No one dined and dashed, the food tasted good (those who were actually served), we were treated like criminals, our server was terrible, the beer selection was awesome (but don't order if you're actually thirsty or you'll dry up like a starfish). As an aside- we left Parlor City and went to Emil's Hideaway. We had 15 people in our party and the food, service and atmosphere were all fantastic! read more

One evening we decided to get pizza for takeout. 2 pizzas & garlic cheese sticks was around $45 (slightly overpriced but good food.) I paid bill and brought food home and we enjoyed. Later I looked at the receipt and saw a $1.50 To Go Order Surcharge? Are you kidding me? Are we really hurting so bad that we need to charge patrons for made up services? Coming from the Des Moines area where we have El Bait Shop, a bar that has 100 different microbrews on tap, this is probably the closest I have seen any other bar get to that benchmark. They currently have 56 beers on tap, and even though it's still in Iowa, they had a number of beers I had not seen before. We got there around 8:00 pm on a Friday night and luckily for us the guy we were meeting had saved us some seats at the bar. This place was packed! Unfortunately we had eaten earlier so we didn't have a chance to try out any of the food but we did take a look at the menu and there were quite a few things that caught our eye. We went on a Sunday afternoon, it was a beautiful day so we sat on the patio, very nice ambiance. Not sure if the were short staffed but the service was slow, albeit pleasant. I ordered the blackened chicken salad with bacon, the flavor was ok but the portion was too large. I ordered chipotle ranch dressing that was more of a sandwich spread than a salad dressing, meaning it was too thick for a salad and had more chipotle than ranch flavor. We had fried dill pickle chips because why not? They were interesting, the batter they were fried in had dill in it, didn't understand that but they tasted ok. My husband got a Memphis sandwich which is BBQ pork with coleslaw and he really enjoyed it. He ordered handcut French fries with it that had so much salt it was visible and rendered them inedible. Our server graciously bought us another order of fries with less salt. The Bloody Mary bar is a great concept and for once I actually enjoyed a Bloody Mary out that had the right spice that I like, but I was a bit concerned about all the hands dipping in the olives, pickles, peppers, etc so I steered away from that. I tried the variety appetizer and it made me and my date sick to our stomachs. They sat us at a table right next to the stage where a terrible band played and the table was wobbly.
