My husband and I wanted to do a very casual and informal wedding and instead of a traditional looking ceremony we opted to have a dinner party for our families and friends at our favorite neighborhood restaurant. We've been regular and frequent customers at Parthenon, where the food is amazing (especially the perfectly seasoned sides), for 5 years. We had the party last night in the private banquet room and it was the wedding of my dreams. The hospitality was excellent and the every member of the staff went above and beyond to help us get the room decked out with the center pieces, balloons, and cake, and getting the room configured exactly as we wanted it. I must admit I was a little surprised. When I first saw the room in harsh lighting it struck me as a bit chintzy. But once we put the flowers we ordered on the tables, some very tasteful balloon bouquets strategically placed around the room, the cake and gift tables dressed up a bit, and the room was lit in softer more ambient lighting it actually all looked very beautiful. I was amazed at what little effort (and little extra money) it took to give the room a very elegant feel. While we wanted a polished look, we still wanted that warm friendly service that Parthenon is known for and we got it in spades. We were treated to attentive service with a heartfelt smile from everyone on staff and Pete, the owner, was down regularly throughout the night to make sure that all of our needs were met and that everyone was happy and well fed. Which we were! My lamb was succulent and delicious and the salmon was an enormous hit with all those who ordered it and the chicken kabobs were also well received. The enormous dessert platter of baklava and other Greek cakes rivaled our beautiful and delicious wedding cake in popularity. Everything was just wonderful from start to finish. It was the perfect, zero stress wedding party. I couldn't recommend Parthenon more highly or thank them enough. One last thing, in case it wasn't clear, my partner and I are gay. Any gay couples coming in from out of town to get legally married in DC should seriously consider Parthenon for your reception or a rehearsal dinner (or just a place to eat). It's not a gay establishment and it's not in the gay part of town or even downtown. It's in a quiet upper-northwest neighborhood, a couple of blocks from the Maryland border. But every single person working there treated us like family and made it their priority to make our wedding as special as any wedding. There wasn't even a hint or whiff of suggestion from anyone that our celebration wasn't anything but normal and deserving of the same respect and enthusiasm accorded to all people getting married. It didn't even occur to me in the moment, because normalcy doesn't usually strike you in the moment, but looking back on yesterday and thinking on that fact makes me well up a bit. It's just so wonderful to feel truly respected. read more

Had a wonderful dinner here. Although we have lived in the neighborhood for a long time, we have never been here. We had an incredibly accomodating, friendly and professional waiter. This guy was top notch and could have been running a high end restaurant downtown! The ambiance is very much like all greek restaurants. Nothing too fancy, but you're there for the food anyway! We had lamb and the roasted chicken, which was out of this world good. Apparently, it's a favorite and I am planning on returning for more soon. Had a terrific meal here this weekend with my girlfriend. It was a Saturday night, we had no reservation, but despite a bustling atmosphere we were seated right away. Our waiter, Geoff, was courteous and offered valuable recommendations. We never had to wait to catch his attention, all our needs were anticipated. The appetizers of stuffed grape leaves and mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat were very tasty. My entree, swordfish kabob was done just right. I was surprised how much I enjoyed a taste of the lamb my better half had ordered. Normally not a big fan of lamb, but this was really tender with a creamy sauce, and I would consider ordering this for myself in the future. read more

We stopped by this restaurant because we were in the area for another event, and I have been on the look out for a good gyro. The decor is obviously Greek and easy to spot driving by. We sat outside, as it was pleasant weather. Husband had a gyro salad, and I got the lamb souvlaki. I was debating whether to get this or the intended gyro sandwich, and asked the waiter which one he likes better. He said both are very good, but personally likes the lamb. He was right, both meat were very good. The gyro (on my husband's salad) was perfectly seasoned, and generously cut. The lamb was very tender. The first bite I thought was not salty enough, but after eating 2-3 bites I realized it was really good. The portion was good for the price: a large plate for $10-11. So on the plate was the lamb kabab (5 pieces), Greek salad, and pita bread. The pita bread tasted pretty good, bu since it was under the salad, it got soggy by the end of the meal. The Greek salad was tasty, and the feta was better than I expected. The waiter said that the gyro sandwich would have been open face too - I would have preferred rolled/folded up. The daughter got the rice pudding and enjoyed it. As a side note, the bathroom was inside the bar area. very spacious and very clean, but it is a one person bathroom. Looks like it was the only bathroom in the place, so I suppose it's good that they keep it very clean. read more

I am a business owner and often hosting parties for friends and customers several times a wear. Parthenon Restaurant became my favorite spot. As and owner of a pest control company before I host several thousand dollars party for my guess, I asked to inspected the kitchens and give me a walkthrough the restaurant. One of my associate he is a retire health inspector for another state and we go through the restaurant with a fine comb. It was times that restaurant owners refuse to give us access to inspect their kitchen. In this case, if someone has concerns about their kitchen and they don't let us inspect it then we just don't go there. Or if you see a Chinese restaurant owner ordering food form a Greek or Italian restaurant, then we are concern about it. If owner does not eat the food from his own restaurant, why should we? Parthenon became our perfect place, with a downstairs lounge, great food, excellent service, and very clean kitchen. Regardless age of the building was never a time that I walked in Parthenon's kitchen and found it dirty. My guess they absolutely love the very tasty food of Parthenon, the service, the sanitation, the friendliness of the servers and the quality of food that they became regular customers. There is one idem that we will not consume even the owner give it us at no charge. The Greek white wine called RETSINA. Yaaak. What the H*^%# is that? But there are some other Greek red wines very good. My personal preference is the Australian wine Yellow Tail but they do not service it there. I highly recommend everyone to try Parthenon restaurant. Everything in their menu taste mighty good. TRUST ME. read more

It was a beautiful night and we had some time before our movie started. We stopped at one place on Connecticut ave (that had 3-4 open tables outside) and asked if we could have a quick drink outside. Nope, only if you eat there - there bar was full and it would have been uncomfortable. We stopped at the Parthenon and we were greeted warmly by the bartender. He noted how nice it was outside so we asked if we could have our drink out there (they had a couple of open tables outside). He immediately said "Of course". He then proceeded to walk us out to the tables with our drinks and made sure we were set up. Very impressed at this point. A minute or two later, he returned with water for each of us. They turned me into a Greek fan. I guess I've only ever had hummus from the grocery store before but when I had it there my dining companion said the reason it was so smooth was because they peel their chickpeas. I don't know what it is but it's heaven. I find myself getting hummus take out nearly once a week outside of dining there. I love their patio in the spring and fall. Their gyro meat is good. We also got their flaming cheese once and it was AWESOME plus ... food on fire is pretty awesome. read more

I've eaten here many times and have never had anything on the menu that was not excellent. The quality of food and the consistency is really remarkable. The Greek dishes are all delicious. The seafood is always extremely fresh and perfectly cooked. I think the Crab cakes, soft shells and burger are by far the best in town. Came here with a group. First, gave me regular coke instead of diet. I could've written that off as a mistake. But then, I ordered spaghetti off the kids menu, including that I only wanted butter and Parmesan on it. It came with sauce and I then had to wait 10 more minutes after waiting 45 minutes for the food to begin with (it wasn't busy when I was in) and saw the waitress set it down on a counter while she filled wine glasses for another table. When they finally got it right, the pasta was watery, not hot enough to melt butter from the table and had no butter sauce on it, and the pasta I make at home is better for sure. Good Greek food. Parking stinks in this part of town, but it is worth the hassle. Place is clean, the wait staff is friendly, food is good and plenty of it. You can get smaller sizes for a lesser price or belly up to the big boy meals. One can order food that is served relatively quick like sandwiches and fries or one can order full meals that take a little longer and are quite substantive. From the appetizers all the way to desserts and coffee, everything is A-1 good. And sitting at the bar, eating, and watching television is a treat, too. This place is nice! I like it but why should you take my word for it? This is tacky-decor expensive restaurant that qualifies as a neighborhood taverna. I like my Greek food home-made best and Parthenon comes closest to my taste. No reason you should like my taste, of course, but this is a tacky-decor, expensive neighborhood taverna in one of the richest, most sophisticated neighborhoods in the United States and IT IS PACKED every night by locals. Visited this place for the first and last time today. Walked in to pick up a take-out order today. Older gentleman at the door rudely says "souvlaki??"-- he didn't even bother saying hello. And he then summons one of the waiters, who then takes my card and brings me my receipt. I walked out, but then realized I forgot my card and had to walk back in; then the older gentleman proceeded to rudely say: "What??". The service was terrible and the food was mediocre. read more

The Parthenon has excellent food and the service is tremendous. The servers are warm and inviting. The problem i had with the restaurant was with the owner and one of the managers. The owner, Pete, and older manager, George, were very rude and disconcerting. Pete was cold and uninviting, he completely ignored me and my family so he could jump down the throat of one of his servers. The manager George did not attempt to help the situation and told me if I didn't want to wait I should go somewhere else. Both Pete and George use unacceptable language and make the experience less then satisfactory. If you frequent the restaurant, try and stay away from those two awful individuals. read more

The service is horrible. everyone got our orders wrong. and the waiter told us there was not a problem. we had to call the manager to get our orders straighten. the waiter walked away from us to talk to his friends afterwards. he not want to show us our bill. and asked us to give him money, we had to ask him to give us the bill. he not want to come back to order table to ask us if we wanted anything more he gave us the food corrected and asked us if we wanted anything more. We went there with great expectations. We ordered the same dish: moussaka, a staple of Greek cuisine. It was terrible. It tasted like industrialized food you buy in a box at the supermarket. When the bill arrived, I found out I was charged around $35.00 (before tip) for two unedible pieces of moussaka, two scoops of white rice, a handful of green beans and two glasses of tap water. Well, this was my 4th time here at this restaurant and all I can say is: OUTSTANDING! I came there with my wife for dinner and we shared the cold apps for two, which came with a mix of different cold apps and warm pita. She had the chicken kabob and I had the rockfish. This Greek restaurant has an extensive menu, the food is generally good and the service is efficient. In good weather, you can eat outside.

The place is larger than it appears. Lots of seating. Medium price point. The food was good and the service was outstanding. We ordered greek salad, the half a chicken dish and olives after having a light ouzo. I can't speak to authenticity, but the food is delicious and the service is very friendly and personal. Thank God I was not born with a tendency towards Vegetarianism, but if forced to live that way, I could happily go to The Parthenon on a daily basis. FYI: the fish dishes are GREAT, but you may want to ask which have a lot of bones, because having your gums speared by a bunch unexpected fish bones can really cut down on your enjoyment. The worst Greek food ever! Tasted like microwave cooking. We were seated in the bar area. The one person there was both bartender and order taker. Horrible service. She messed up our order horribly. My moussaka came first, cold. Because of the server's error my friend's food came about 15 minutes later. They did take her order off of the bill.
