I took my second car here for a smog check. I keep it in the garage and drive it maybe 6 times a year. It had a 1/4 tank of gas and had been sitting in my garage for 2 months since I last drove it. I passed my last check two years ago but FAILED my smog check here. Unsure as to why 200 miles of driving could create such a change I took it down the street to another Test Only Facility on Walnut 13 minutes later and it PASSED. All I did in between was fill up the car with gas. The test at both places cost me $40. The owner of the Pasadena facility was nice and offered some 'repair oriented' explanations as to why my car failed -that's why he gets 2 stars. But I wish he had taken the time to listen to my concerns or had the knowledge of the owner of the second shop I went to. I asked the second test place about the discrepancy and things such as having a warmed up engine, full tank of gas, properly inflated tires, even using additives can make all make a difference. The pass /fail criteria is a fine line. I went home, Googled "pass a smog test" and verified what I was told. Unbelievable. The whole state Smog check system is a big broken joke but at least I didn't follow the advice of Pasadena Test Only and get my car repaired. read more

Alen and his wife run a very efficient business and I am certainly a very satisfied and grateful customer. Alen is very helpful and very efficient and works on your car immediately. He also goes the extra mile and tells you what he finds wrong like what he did with my car. After a very quick smog test (my 15 year old Honda Civic passed!) and change oil, he called my attention to my tank leaking gasoline which is very dangerous if not fixed. Alen and his wife were so helpful and connected me to the next door mechanic to check out the problem. I would highly recommend Alen for your change oil and smog test needs. He is the best in Pasadena, charges very fairly and is very professional and very helpful. One tip though for Saturday (they are closed on Sunday) is to come early in the morning as they are always very busy on the weekend. This is a place that customers come in and get excellent and friendly service so it is no wonder they can get crowded on some days, especially Saturdays. read more

This was phenomenal! I went to another place first because it opened at 7:30am and I was trying to make sure I still got to work on time. By the time it was 7:45am and no one had showed, I was peeved and went here instead. I admire that, when they open at 8am, they answered the phone 15 minutes early saying they were open and ready for business. It's a great business practice! I was done in less than 10 minutes, given $20 off for a special they had on smog tests - just $40! I even asked for an oil change because my light was on, and he told me I didn't need it! He was so honest and explained that my oil was still perfectly clean and didn't need replacing. He refused a tip for his honesty, and as I drove off, ran after me to tell me my front tire was too low and filled it up for me - again, he refused a tip. Did a quick price comparison by google maps and then called a few places on 12/20/14. Here was $40 out the door. Didn't need any coupons or yelp coupons. Just drive in and it's $40. Other nearby prices: arroyo smog $38.20, best smog check $50, walnut smog $60, hill smog $45. After getting my car smogged, I also found k&s Mobil for $35. Chose this Pasadena smog because they reported an out the door price over the phone and I wasn't sure if the other places would charge extra for reporting to the DMV. Chose Pasadena because there was no wait while arroyo had 1 car there. Went on a sat at 11 am. Took 10 mins max. They have coffee, candy bars etc. the guy does not seem shifty as in some smog places. Overall a great experience although $2-5 more than arroyo and k & s. Great service. read more

When I established an account with yelp, I never pictured myself writing a review for a smog test station. However, Alen definitely earned one. I chose this place based on the yelp reviews and I thought to myself, "who would review a smog station?" Well, now I know why people have taken the time to compliment Alen. He is super friendly, his prices are extremely fair, he is fast, and his bay and waiting area are the cleanest I have ever encountered in any car related establishment. The nearby car dealership's service team (hint - rhymes with "Masadena Rhonda") could take some lessons from Alen on how to make your customers happy. If you live near Pasadena and need your car smog tested, I challenge you to find a better location than this one. I am still shocked by having such a positive experience at a smog station. For a smog test, my total was $60, but Alen automatically applied the $20 discount without mentioning Yelp - so $40. It wasn't the $20 OOP some have mentioned, but for the great, quick service, I would come again when I receive that dreaded DMV smog test requirement again. He was super courteous and had a friendly, approachable demeanor - not something you come by easily in the auto repair industry - you all know what I'm talking about! He had a little waiting room with magazines, coffee, water, snacks, etc. But, I really didn't need to bother with the waiting room since I was in and out in less than 15 minutes - WITHOUT an appointment. Just did smog check on my Camry here on Oct 2. The place is clean as always. I sat in the air-conditioned room with coffee and tea while waiting for my car to be ready. There I chatted with other customers who are mostly returning customers and who all speak highly about Allen and his first-class work. Smog-check shops and smog-check shops are not the same, and this shop is no doubly the best one in the San Gabriel Valley. Technicians and technicians are not the same, and Alen is the best! The owner is a gracious man and was finished so quickly that I was taken aback. I had already settled down with my book, expecting to get in some quiet reading time. The price was also the lowest that I have paid for a couple of decades. He is tucked away, and probably doesn't get a lot of drive by business, but you should go out of your way and give him your business. Too many good people don't have enough community support. Mom and pop shop, as others have mentioned. I was able to get a same-day appointment for an oil change and they got to work on it right away. The shop is incredibly clean and you can sit right next to your car and watch as they change the oil. I love that transparency!
