Passage was completely devoid of any other customers on a Thursday evening. I guess people just go for the buffet. We ordered the lamb samosa as an appetizer and the dinner for two. The highlights were the lamb samosa, garlic naan, daal, and papadum. However, the butter chicken and paneer curry fell short. The lamb samosas were perfect. Crispy on the outside with spiced ground lamb on the inside. There was something super fragrant and garlicky about naan that I loved. The daal was very tasty, a warm lentil soup seasoned with cilantro and other spices. And the papadum was something new to me, almost like a paper thin cracker. Both the butter chicken and paneer were so bland. And the ratio of curry to chicken was disappointing. It was like diced chicken with a side of curry. Pro-tip: just go for the buffet. read more

Went here for their lunch buffet. They had Mughlai special that day. I like the fact that they have more veg options than non - veg. It makes the price $18 somewhat justifiable for vegetarians. Veg options Uttapam (savory rice flour pancakes) with potato vegetable and sambhar (lentil lentil stew ), salad, pav bhaji (mashed mix veg stew served with bread ), chole bhatura (garbanzo beans with fried indian bread ), veg tikki (savory veg cake ), some sort of mix veg fritters / tava veg, DIY chaat bar , mango tofu curry, tiranga tarka ( mix lentil dish ) , shahi palak ( indian cottage cheese in spinach gravy ) , lahsooni gobi ( cauliflower in ginger base ), dum aloo (potatoes in a creamy gravy ), malai korma ( mix veg in white creamy sauce ), paneer makhani ( cheese in red creamy sauce ), paneer chilli ( cottage cheese with veg cooked in asian sauces , indo chinese noodles and veg biryani (rice ). For non veg they had some kabobs, fish curry and chicken biryani They had mughlai paratha in addition to naan as the bread option. They kept bringing out hot breads. Mughlai paratha is a multi layered bread, sometimes stuffed with different ingredients ( though these were not ) and more flaky and crispier than nan. I liked the parathas. Desserts Malai kheer ( rice pudding ), falooda kulfi ( rose flavoured ice cream ), shahi tukda (bread pudding in a sweetened milk ) , gulab jamun, fruits and mango softy icecream. I liked the uttapam, chole, pav bhaji, mix veg fritters, mango tofu curry , chaat , cauliflower, veg buryani and most of the desserts. All the other items were either bland or not really tasty. It was my mom's 75th birthday so we decided to celebrate it at this restaurant although it is a long ride for us from our place of residence. The decision was based on the fact that when we had visited the restaurant about the year back we were impressed by the choices they had to offer. The taste was also very good. Our experience this time was outright bad. The number of choices had shrunk tremendously. Most of the dishes had lots of potato used primarily as fillers. The food was very greasy or very dry. For example, pongal is supposed to be very soft and slippery primarily because of ghee. I can understand they cannot run a business with dishes made using ghee. However a good amount can be replaced with oil and a little bit of ghee to give the right aroma and flavor. Alas, the pongal as bone dry and flaky! The dosa was dry and seemed to have been sitting around for a long time. Every meat dish I tried had meat that overcooked and chewy. Tandoori chicken was outright burnt. I can go on and on about every dish I tried. It is easier to point out the only dish that was cooked perfectly-- fried baby corn. It was delicious. The desserts were pretty good. The mango cream cake was yummy...Gulab Jamun was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately I could eat only couple and not worry about the calories I was consuming . This used to be my go to Indian buffet restaurant. It was recommended by an Indian colleague years ago and I have recommended many friends to dine here. An unfortunate experience this year has caused me to have to leave this review and warn others about the health and cleanliness quality of this establishment. My husband and I arrived on a weekend after right before opening and they seated about 5-10 mins early (which was nice of them), served us waters, and asked us to wait while the food was being laid out. During this time, we both visited the rest rooms to wash our hands to get ready for delicious meal. After getting back to the table, my husband, in a very disturbed way told me that he found a giant COCKROACH sitting on the ledge on the restroom sink. This unfortunately isn't where the story ends... We proceeded to inform our waiter, who responded with a blank face like it was no big deal... Then we informed a more senior looking wait staff, who also was completely apathetic... We ate our lunch very disturbed by how neither of the people we informed seemed to care that there were Cockroaches in the restaurant. We could've just left before having the meal but didn't want to seem rude.. Finally, upon check out at the front desk, we informed the store manager and all he said was "he'll call animal control" - again in a nonchalant no-big-deal mannerism. There was no apology, no "we will investigate", "we will clean up", or anything. That was the last straw. I have tried a number of restaurant in NY and SF area. And this place beats them all. Very very good food. For the price (~$17) there was a lot of variety. Appetizers:Chaat, Gol gappa Pav bhaji, Chola bhatura, Veg Pakora, Idli, Dosas along with a number of chutneys. Entrees: Aloo gobhi, Beans, Saag paneer, Arbi, Aloo capsicum, Malai kofta, Veg Biryani, Daal, Crispy baby corn, Upma, Chili paneer, Veg chowmein, Rice, butter Chicken, Goat curry, Fish fry, Chicken curry and Chicken roll. But then the ones I liked were more than the ones I didn't. Chaat corner with DIY chaat options and paani puri. I literally got stuck in this section. Love their sweet and savory chutneys. Dosas: They make tiny masala dosas and utthapams which look cute and taste delicious. They also have idly, sambar and chutney. Curries: Tons of curry options in both vegetarian and non vegetarian. This is our regular weekday Indian lunch spot. They have a wide selection of items including a vast number of vegetarian-friendly options. I am a particular fan of their Gobi (cauliflower) manchurian which shows up about every other week. That stuff is insanely tasty, slightly sweet and with a nice crunchy exterior as well. Came here for a Mother's Day Dinner Buffet. The pricing was at a premium at about $20 instead of the usual $15 or so. The food that day was pretty good. I had everything from the Masala Dosa, Pani Puri, and Pav Bhaji in the "appetizer section" to Mutter Paneer. Half a row of vegetarian options, and half a row of meat options. The service however was kind of sub-par for the price. There was also a noticeable difference in how they treated Indian people (kind of ignored, had to wait longer) and how they treated the non-Indian people that walked in. In particular, it was one of the Indian waiters working that night who was the worst offender! He completely ignored us while focusing on the table with a bunch of white people next to us instead. Unfortunately this isn't a one time thing as it has happened to my family in the past as well. Not so excited about this restaurant at the moment. This is a review for the dinner, not buffet, so as far as I know the buffet could still be great. The veggie samosas and naan were delicious, but the raita was very dull. Almost nothing in it and no flavor. The mint chutney was fabulous as usual. The stuffed potato paratha was burned in numerous parts and I couldn't taste anything but the burned. That was a wasted item. The mango lassi was delicious. I could drink those all day! The service was polite and water was refilled regularly. The pooris were not plain; they had little bits of green plant material in them. My sweetheart had to pick around them to eat each poori. What a nuisance; since when did they start putting those in there? Or did they -- what we suspect -- just not clean their heating surface before cooking them? Eww. The "plain" rice wasn't. They knew how to do plain before, what happened? A bowl of rice with peas and little black thingies throughout was brought to our table. My honey reminded the waiter that he asked for plain. The waiter returned in a flash with the same bowl of un-plain rice, sans most of the peas. They just scraped most of the peas off the top and gave him the same bowl. Shame on you Passage! I tried to eat the rice, so it wouldn't be a waste, but it was full of yuckiness. There was a random piece of clove or two, little black who-knows-whats, little brown I-don't-knows, and a random leaf at the bottom! In what universe is that plain? Maybe they just didn't wash the pot before cooking. It also had an overall sweet flavor that icked me out (maybe from the clove). Dressing it up with chutney helped a little, and spooning some onto my paratha helped cover up the burned spots. In a buttshell, our dinner's theme seemed to be Futile Attempts to Deal With the Kitchen's Mistakes. Not worth the considerable drive to the restaurant, nor the money we paid. On a positive note, the atmosphere is still very date-like and soothing. I loved the soothing music. Sometimes Bollywood style tunes are fun, but the relaxing music they chose really fit the mood better. Just wish the food wasn't so problematic. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes available. The service is friendly and accommodating. The buffet is not cheap but it is well worth a treat. The ambience is unassuming but pleasant. Passage to India is one of my new favorite restaurants to go to! The food is absolutely scrumptious and the prices are pretty hard to beat. It's crazy that I had no idea there was a buffet in the area that only charges around $18.00 per person. Those prices are even better than your average casino buffets! My favorite items there are the Butter chicken, white rice, and the aloo Gobhi. I really like this place because it caters to both meat lovers as well as vegetarians. I'd passed this palce a ton of times now and finally organized a going away for a co-worker here. If we weren't strapped for time I'd have ordered from the menu but I also had to adhere to the wishes of the group. Lots of interesting items you don't see at other places. The buffet? Thus, we went to the only Indian dinner buffet place we know in the Palo Alto/Mountain View/Los Altos area - Passage to India! There are quite a number of choices here, and most things are tasty. However, I did find that their saag paneer was a bit too bland and their butter chicken's chicken was a bit too dry. Other than that, it was decent and satisfied my Indian buffet craving. I think that if I weren't so hungry, I would have probably driven myself south to Bombay Gardens near Lawrence Expressway to get even tastier Indian dinner buffet for less than or about the same cost. This is a restaurant I use to go to when nothing else was open and the food was OK. I just went there for dinner tonight and everything we had was fresh and very tasty. Half of us had the buffet while the other half ordered off the menu and everyone was happy with their food. I am not sure if at lunch time they have a different chef or they have a new chef but the food has improved dramatically. The staff are polite and the restaurant is clean. Food-GREAT! At first I was a little put off that they *only* have buffet on Friday and Saturday-- what if I wanted my own fresh entree? Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Their buffet items are fresh and delicious, and the buffet is a GREAT deal (about $16 per person). I liked almost everything I tasted, with the exception of the Baigan Bartha, but the real highlights were the mango tofu curry and the malai kofta. Really all five stars are for the malai kofta. I could eat six plates of just that. My fiance said he's willing to pay extra for the chance to get as much rice as he wants. And the endless fresh naan is hard to beat, especially since they include garlic naan in there! The wine list isn't terribly upscale, but it's also not terribly overpriced. They pour liberal glasses for you-- which was funny to contrast with the service across the street at Amber India, where they dole out your food for you WWII-ration style! In my ongoing quest to try Indian lunch buffets, I did something a little different recently... I went for dinner. Mountain View's Passage to India offers a huge dinner buffet for $12.99. I haven't decided yet if the price is worth it, but the food is quite good, there are a lot of interesting and hard to find dishes, and the spread is the largest I've seen. (We debated whether Priya's spread is bigger and I think Passage to India's wins by a pea - a fenugreek-seasoned pea.) Naan was brought in baskets to the table, and the service was outstanding - dirty dishes were magically spirited away every time I went back to the buffet. The place was packed (this was Sunday night) with everyone seemingly going to the buffet, so the dishes were frequently refreshed. Unfortunately, the next morning both my boyfriend and I (and another friend also reported this on a previous visit) could um... feel the after effects of our meal. In fact, a friend suggested I review this on "poophound." I thought the meal was worth it despite the after effects. Really, I just figure that this is one of the hazards you accept when you agree to eat Indian food. I assume there's a spice or something I can't digest. My greatest thrill was in discovering that they served pav bhaji - a hard to find chaat item that is basically mashed-up potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and other vegetables served on top of grilled Indian buns (often store bought hamburger buns). At Passage to India, there is a small griddle to grill the buns right at the buffet, and the pav bhaji was good as it always is. Soft serve mango ice cream was offered as a dessert and was a favorite at our table. Another popular dish was the chicken roll - spiced chicken wrapped up in a thin tortilla-like bread. Other dishes I tried: Chicken tikka masala (my beloved CTM was off - the sauce was too sweet and creamy) Chili chicken (better ordered off the menu at the Priya Chowdown) Cucumber salad Chicken curry (the best of the meat dishes; the meat was so tender it fell apart to the touch of a fork) Fish masala Platter of freshly roasted okra, eggplant, and potatoes (these Indian seasoned French fries were one of my favorite items) Garlic chicken (I didn't like this - the sauce was too vinegary or something) Rice Aloo matter (good standard potato and pea dish) Benegan barta (pureed eggplant) A potato/mixed vegetable cake/bread (quite tasty) Watermelon (this was by a sign that read "assorted fruit," but there was only watermelon) Raita (not that good; almost bitter) Kheer Tiny pieces of cake Other dishes I didn't have a chance to try: Chop Suez (sic) (apparently Passage is known also for their Indian-Chinese preparations, but chop suey (they have 2 different kinds) doesn't interest me) Chicken soup Veg. Pretty good Indian lunch buffet. It's $14.95/person (which I think it's a bit steep. Maybe it's the Bay Area, but I remember eating Indian lunch buffets in my hometown for like $10 or less). The variety of dishes that they have here is very impressive. It's a good mix of north and south Indian food, including dosas. There are just vats and vats of curries and meats which is amazing. Everyone in my party really liked the food. The vegetable makhani was probably my favorite dish. It was made exactly like how I expected for this dish - very orange, creamy, not spicy, and full of flavor, and a good variety of vegetables. I was disappointed by the saag paneer though. The saag tasted very off to me, almost like soap. I loved the papadum (can't really mess that up) and ate a lot of those. I would come back again, sure. read more

4.0 Stars Passage to India serves up an all you can eat Lunch Buffet for $12.95/person that offers a lot of variety from meat dishes to vegetarian dishes to dessert items. The Lunch Buffet is slightly more expensive on weekends for $15.95/person. I arrived at Noon and only a few tables were populated. It didn't get really busy until 12:30 pm or so. Once the waiter shows you to your table, feel free to walk up the buffet line and grab a plate. I usually like to take a quick walk-through to see what items are available before I start piling mounds of food onto my plate. I guess it's partly strategic, but feel free to go at it however way you please. I recall seeing at least 4 main meat and 4 main vegetarian options in the big pots. In terms of the meat dishes there was Butter Chicken, Chicken Vindaloo, Lamb Curry, and Fish Curry. There was even tandoori chicken on the side. For vegetarian dishes I noticed there was a cauliflower & potato curry, spinach (saag), garbanzo beans, and lentil (daal). There are smaller pots at the end of the buffet line with some Indian-Chinese dishes like chow mein noodles and tamarind rice with peanuts. These change out daily so there's something new to try with every visit. When you get back to your table the server will bring you a Naan basket with plain and garlic Naan. I was amazed the first time I ate here because typically other Indian buffets in the area only serve plain Naan. The Naan comes out piping hot and is nice and crispy. The garlic Naan is especially fragrant and delicious. The server also brings a potato filled dosa for each person at the table. I tend to shy away from eating it because it will fill you up quicker. To finish off your heavy meal, I highly recommend stopping by the Mango Softee machine. I found the name on the machine to be quite interesting in describing sorbet as "softee". The texture of the sorbet is smooth, but still icy, and has a nice sweet mango flavor to it. It's a nice way to cleanse your palette so you don't succumb to food coma after your meal! == A MUST TRY! == read more

Who doesn't love a good Indian buffet? I imagine they are particularly popular with the weight loss industry because they almost guarantee future customers. But I digress; you want to know whether to plunk down $16 for dinner. Few restaurants offer a dinner buffet, and I've never seen one with as many food choices as Passage to India. From chicken tikka masala and aloo gobi to palak/saag and rogan josh, you can usually find a couple of your favorites here. And often something unfamiliar, like methi chicken or fried bitter melon. Or even random Thai dishes. The food is a little bland (although the chili chicken has some heat) but rarely oversalted or otherwise flawed. I've eaten here frequently enough that some of the waiters will immediately offer me an iced tea. Over the years, the service model has changed from time to time. Currently, a waiter will bring a basket of naan (1/2 garlic, 1/2 plain) and refills on beverages. Sometimes when it's busy there will be a wait, but it's usually not too bad. Buffets are not for everyone: you have to thread your way through the tables to get your food and worry about whether other customers have left any germs on the plates or serving spoons; sometimes you find that someone has fished the last paneer cubes out of the saag and no refill is imminent; your favorite dessert might not be offered today; and you might eat waaay too much. But if you like to sample widely, hate choosing from a huge menu, hate waiting for your food, prefer a little bustle to a hushed dining experience, and don't mind a second or third trip to get the freshest food, then a dinner here can be fun and, if not a bargain, fairly priced. I love Passage To India! This was the second Indian buffet I had gone to, the first being Bombay Garden, and I'm glad that I didn't have to look much further for my go-to for Indian cuisine. Passage to India has an excellent selection of various foods, but I only stick to two things: the chow mein and the butter chicken. I know what you're thinking... chow mein at an Indian restaurant? But trust me, it's awesome! Oh, and they don't call it chow mein anymore, it's listed as vegetable noodles or something like that. Regardless of the name, I love having that additional option instead of being stuck with rice. The butter chicken here is to die for! Some butter chicken dishes at other restaurants can be too spicy for me, but this one is just right. And they make sure to stock a lot of it. Even during the lunch rush hour, the pot never runs low. The naan bread that the waiters bring by is also really enjoyable, but it seems to take awhile for them to bring it out sometimes. I imagine this is because they cook it fresh, since the bread always comes out toasty and delicious. I tend to come here during the lunch hour, and what I enjoy about Passage to India is that the restaurant always has seating. I've never once had to wait for a table, and they keep the buffet well stocked. The only problem you might encounter here is the other buffet goers, some of which who spend way too long chatting in front of the food or staring at their potential items, thereby blocking others from stocking up their plates. The buffet is near the wall, so it can be a bit cramped getting to items with others around. The dessert options are a bit limited. You can get some cake slices or soft serve ice cream, but that's pretty much it. At least they're tasty! My only complaint about this restaurant is the fact that the water glasses are rather small. The servers try to do their best to keep the glasses from hitting empty, but this can be hard to do with so many tables. read more

Amazeballs! I've frequented this establishment during their weekend buffet lunches. Tons of vegetarian buffet items that are delicious. Personally, I love the channa and anything with paneer. I literally crave Indian buffet from this place at least once per month and then proceed to guilt someone into accompanying me. It doesn't take much cause nothing beats a good Indian buffet on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Oh I almost forgot... don't forget to save room for the soft serve mango ice cream. Delicious!!! I've been going to Passage to India for over 25+ years. The point is I know it very well. Over the years it's been my go to consistent Indian restaurant. Lately, meaning the last few years, the quality of service has steadily gone down. Fast forward to 2018, not only has the service gotten bad but they are being super cheap and ripping customers of on the to go orders. There have been so many times where they short change me on rice.... Why??? It's the cheapest item for them to make. They always claim a certain amount of time comes with the meal. But that never happens. I called them (the owner) out on it tonight and they acted like they were doing me a favor by providing me the rice I actually paid for. I've had it with them being so cheap with their customers and ripping them off. You'd also think the owner would acknowledge or even say HI to a customer that's been going there for 25+ years. But sadly no. The owner at Passage to India is horribly rude and in hindsight has always been. This might seem small issue but just think if you ordered curry and got home with no rice even though you paid for it. Not only is that not right but it's a bad eating experience as well. There are sooooo many other indian restaurants with FRIENDLY service. I'd won't be going back to Passage ever again! read more

I give the dinner buffet 3.5 stars, rounding up for presentation and ambiance. The restaurant is well maintained, and the buffet presentation is excellent. There are SO MANY options, many of which are vegetarian. The Indochinese selections are mediocre, so I recommend sticking with more traditional Indian options. My favorite dish was the malai kofta-- so savory and creamy! We were offered fresh naan throughout our meal, and it was delicious. Most of the desserts did not look very appealing, but the mango sorbet was refreshing after a spicy meal. read more

This is my first time ordering meals from this restaurant. A total disappointment. Restaurant staff was cold, impatient, and business-like. Food was over-priced - like many restaurants on El Camino Real. I couldn't finish the chicken and the dessert I ordered at home. The sauce tastes somewhat artificial. The dessert was extremely sweet. Overall nothing felt right. I wouldn't come back. PS. Had serious stomachache after the meal. Concerned that the chicken I ordered was not fresh. Horrible experience. read more
