We attempted to go in for dinner rather late and the a-hole behind the counter started yelling at my 77 year old mother and I said we should order fast because they close at a certain time. When I asked the owner for utensils he told me they were not included it would be an extra cost of $0.50 per person. We have been going to Pastrami and friends for years. Solid quality kosher food. Hot pastrami sandwich very satisfying. You can ask them for Lean or for Juicy version of it. Juicy of course means more fat, but its particularly good. i went to school in the south. i got to experience mint juleps, men holding open the door for me, and strangers smiling and saying hello on the street. southerners are friendly and courteous, even to people they don't particularly care for. they like their ladies like their tea; sweeter than care bears on a sugar high. and in the south, people can actually borrow eggs from their neighbors. you can see why i had to get the hell out of there. honestly? i don't really want to know my neighbors. i walk down the street wearing my ipod, not a saccharine smile. and i take my iced tea with lemon and one splenda. despite being from DC, i really seem to belong in new york. in new york, things move fast. people get in, get out, and get on their way. at least that's the way it works at pastrami 'n' friends. my BFF brought me there to try their scrumptious, paper-thin pastrami on rye, and a new york treat i had never tried - a hot dog with potato salad (delish!). we ordered and stepped back to wait for our food to be wrapped up, and i heard a brash long island accent behind me: "hullo there! i wanted to look at your roast chickens, because my motha-in-law is comin' ova fuh dinna tonight, and i'm thinkin' hey - we should get that chicken from the pastrami place! but then i just wasn't sure if i should get a hot dawg or two while i was he-yuh --" but this classy broad never got further than that before she was cut off. "uh, ma'am? i'm gonna stop you right there. why don't you move to the side until you decide what you want, so that i can help this nice gentleman behind you?" i had to turn away to stifle my laughter at her immediate rebuff. having been both a waitress and a retail cashier in past lives, i have dealt with my fair share of the masses, and pretty much? they suck. i mentally high-fived the sandwich maker for getting. his. job. done. While visiting family a couple weeks ago in Deer Park, we decided to go out for Deli. I was born in Manhattan and grew up in Brooklyn, so I know good Deli. Pastrami N Friends serves great Deli. I had the Pastrami sandwich which was overstuffed and filled with moist, tender delicious Pastrami. The side of Stuffed Derma was served in a bowl of egg barley with the right amount of gravity over it. The other members of our group had the Brisket with Potato Latke, Hot Open White Meat Turkey with mashed potatoes and all raved about their selection. The place indeed has the feel of a Brooklyn or Manhattan Deli of the 1950's or 60's. A gem of find and I have sent several friends there already. read more

A dying breed on Long Island, Kosher restaurants are dying all the time. An admitted ex-pat of the Island now living the in the culinary wasteland of North Central Florida. Was back on the Island recently. Corned beef and pastrami to die for at Pastrami and Friends (who could want a better sandwich and pickles...really?) but better yet, the best chopped liver I've ever tasted. I'm a big fan of the various Ben's Kosher places dotted around the Island but Pastrami and Friends is my go to place anytime I'm back on THE Island! First off in lieu of bread on the table, you get a cup of coleslaw and a bowl of pickles. Ha, I'm in love already. The waitress was super awesome and we got to make fun of the other patrons together. Chances are she was probably doing the same thing with them to me, but that's fine, I was too busy shoving corned beef sandwiches and sweet potato fries in my face. You have to walk through the deli portion of the place before you go into the back and sit down. Very casual and relaxed environment. I went there before heading into the Bronx to watch the Yanks slaughter the Orioles. Get a knish while you're there. Oh yeah, baby! When I used to live on L.I. and then subsequently returned to visit the parentals, this was a good choice for me. I love corned beef and tongue (yeah, I said it-tongue), and kosher meat just kicks non-kosher meat's ass! I often did the half and half so I could have both of my true loves here. I love the cole slaw and the dill pickles, and I can't resist a knish. Pricey, of course, but most kosher deli items are. Take out is good and easy too. I miss you, pastrami and friends! Okay, let me start off by saying that I am one of those people that habitually uses Yelp for guidance when choosing places to eat, but never actually posts any of their own reviews. Yelp has been of enormous value to me in making smart decisions about where to dine in the past and only on very rare occasions have I been steered wrong by the thoughtful, well-meaning and informative reviews of others. With that being said, I just returned from Pastrami N Friends after searching high and low for a recommendation as to where I could get my grubby little hands on a mouth-watering and freshly made corned beef sandwich that I was so badly craving. I studied the reviews for this Kosher deli carefully and felt that this was by and large my best option for such a delicacy, which was also within a reasonable driving range of my house........but boy was I ever WRONG! To begin, this deli is located in a well-kept strip mall on Commack rd. in Commack, just south of Jericho Turnpike and looks rather small and unassuming from the outside. After entering, I got to experience just how small the front half of this deli actually was. There were about five-six people waiting to be served at the front counter and it felt beyond claustrophobic. The gentlemen behind the counter were in fact not so gentlemanly in all honesty. They were brash, discourteous and dismissive and began walking away to start making my order before I even got every word out of my mouth! The sandwich I ordered (corned beef on rye bread with mustard) was an absolute insult to deli sandwiches everywhere and was almost laughable in both its appearance and quality. I have to kind of chuckle at the other reviewers who posit the idea that this deli makes their own meat when there is a see-through deli display stocked with shrink-wrapped Hebrew National meats in full view of the customers! Not to mention the ominous beeping of microwave buttons out of sight behind the counter for meat reheating that made me cringe with every # pressed! The sandwich itself was $9.95 + tax and really wasn't even worth a 1/3 of that price. The bread was off a grocery store shelf and out of a bag, not stale by any means, but nothing you would expect from such a revered deli. It was just your basic run-of-the-mill rye. As for the meat, it was dry, tasteless, flavorless and nowhere near the thickness you would expect for price you're charged. The sandwich was about 3/4 of an inch thick in the center and tailed out to about 1cm (if that) in thickness by the crust. It was a really sad looking spectacle. Also, after asking me four times if I wanted mustard on my sandwich, to which I courteously replied "Yes, please!" to every time, I lifted the bread to reveal one minuscule dollop in the center of the sandwich the size of a marble!!! I mean really? Come on now! It only got worse from there......I also ordered a half pound of cole slaw after reading everyone's ravings about how it wasn't to be missed. Well, I wish I had missed it because it was absolutely REPULSIVE!!! It tasted like it was made with sour cream! It was watery, loaded with vinegar and the cabbage was browning throughout! Not even the best cole slaw I have ever tasted is worth $3.49 for a half pound! Lastly, the rude older gentleman behind the counter was ordering around a middle-aged gentleman who was only filling in for the day, telling him to give me change and that he was going to sit down. The gentleman who was filling in proceeded to open the register and stick his rubber glove clad hands, which were covered in meat pieces into the change draw and began sorting through the coins as pieces of meat flew everywhere, including into the register! He then had the audacity to hand me bills covered in pastrami pieces! WTF am I going to do with that? Put it in my pocket so I get chased down by hungry dogs later? My oh my! I can understand that he was a fill-in, but take off your meat coated gloves before giving out change, it's just repulsive, unsanitary and shows an utter lack of common sense. Plus, I'm sure whoever was getting the sandwich he was making after he was through giving me my change wouldn't have appreciated seeing that either. All in all this place is a cheesy, overpriced, knock-off of an actual Kosher deli! Save your money and your poor stomach the trouble and head towards the city for some REAL Kosher food. I basically paid $15.90 for a pickle......which wasn't even an average pickle. Smh..... read more

OK, what did I miss. Coming from Brooklyn, I really was seeking out a "real Jewish deli". I read the reviews, this place is near the house, couldn't wait to go. Coming from the city, 15.00 sandwiches are not shocking, so 12.00 for a pastrami was fine. Actually, not, both my wife and I had a pastrami sandwich, I had a kasha knish, she had a potato knish. The sandwiches were cold cut grade I suspect microwaved, they were dry and disappointing. Knishes tasted like they have been left in the fridge for sometime. Over all, I found the experience disappointing. Guess I will be driving to Brooklyn. read more

Best Kosher deli I have ever eaten at. My whole family have been loyal customers for over 40 years. Growing up we were there every Sunday like clockwork. Excellent coleslaw. Great service. Fantastic catering. Can't say enough good things about the food. We even had their food brought in for Passover a few times. Wish there were more of these great Kosher restaurants around. Not a Katz's deli, but the only kosher restaurant I know of and they made a decent pastrami sandwich. They pack the meat and for 10 bucks it is worth the price. They use Hebrew national, which is a top quality brand. The place has an antique look which I like, even though it needs an update it still makes me feel like I went back in time 40 years. We had the pastrami + corned beef overstuffed combination sandwiches. The pastrami was paper thin and nice, but rather generic tasting. We've had way better from Zan's Deli. Overstuffed is way overstating the sandwiches. They were smaller than the pastrami sandwiches from Zan's ($9)and we were expecting more for the price. We were not expecting the size of the sandwiches from Katz's or Carnegie, but for $14 I expect something larger than a BLT.
