Food was delicious here. Patio del Nispero was recommended by many locals we talked to. The restaurant has outdoor seating and it was the perfect night for an evening dinner al fresco. The Convent was a convent that was converted into a boutique hotel in old town San Juan. We started our evening with a specialty house drink called El Friar...get it? It was made with vodka, guava nectar, and an herbal liquor. It was very refreshing and a great way to cool down in the steamy climate. We ordered appetizers that were hearty and tasty. We ordered the beef alcapurrias and the blue crab empanadas. Both were delicious! For dinner we shared family style because the portions were big enough to share. We ordered the Rabo de Buey (oxtail stew) with criollo sauce, mofongo with shrimp and chicharron, and Pasteles de Lechon with gnocchi. The oxtail stew was delicious and it was served with white rice. I recommend this dish. The oxtails were tender and the sauce completes the beef nicely. The sauce was so delicious we ordered a small baguette to soak it up. The pasteles de lechon were okay. The meat was dry and not flavorful. The gnocchi was made from gandules (pigeon peas) and unfortunately they were overcooked so the texture was very chewy. I don't recommend this dish. The mofongo was delicious. It was topped with criollo sauce however it was very dense. The plantains needed to be cooked a tad more. It had chicharron, which was a little dry. However the criollo sauce and the shrimp made this dish yummy. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and they were extra large shrimp. Their service was impeccable! From the hostess to the wait staff, everyone was friendly and professional. The ambiance was beautiful. The restaurant is inside The Convent Hotel. It was charming and had Rum Diary and Cuban Buena Vista Club vibes-- I loved it. The hotel itself is very beautiful and located very close to the plaza on governor's row where the Governor and other officials reside. Definitely will go back to try other dishes, however there is so much to eat in this area, it will be hard to be a repeat customer. Enjoy! read more

After a long day of travel I got to the hotel 30 minutes before they closed. I had great service and a spectacular sangria. Wanted something a little light for dinner and unfortunately they were out of the first two choices. So I got the pork sliders and they were fantastic! Dinner at Patio del Nispero in the Conventa Hotel was the perfect way to end an afternoon in Old San Juan. Located in an indoor courtyard, it's all the benefits of being outside in the sun, without the heat and sweat. Keep in note that the courtyard is pet-friendly, so don't be alarmed if you notice any furry friends (including alley cats) on the patio! We were seated immediately by the hostess, but we were planning on relaxing on the patio furniture with a drink if we needed to wait for a table. We started off dinner with a charcuterie board and cocktails, mine being a pina colada. It was even better than the ones I've had at the beach! The charcuterie board had some of my favorites--Brie, prosciutto, salami, and Gouda. Add some bread and spiced honey and we have a crowd pleaser! Everything on the menu looked so delicious, so I picked my two favorites and split them with my mom: the lobster risotto and the chicken empanada. I was confused for a second when the waiter delivered a chicken cutlet to my table, but a quick google search revealed that Puerto Ricans consider "empanadas" to be breaded chicken cutlets; the empanadas I've seen at other Latin American restaurants are called "empanadillas" or "pastillos" in Puerto Rico. That definitely didn't stop it from being delicious! It was cooked perfectly with just enough breading, and the truffle sauce tied it all together. I was hesitant to give it up, even though I agreed to share with my mom! The lobster risotto wasn't as good, it tasted too "fishy" and could have used some butter. My sister had the nachos, and they looked and tasted very "American" with bright yellow, liquefied queso and ground beef. If you're a tourist looking for a "familiar" option on this menu, I'd definitely recommend the nachos or the bbq wings. For a dinner for four including alcoholic drinks, the price really wasn't that bad! I was especially surprised that a whole lobster tail was only $26. This has to be one of the more horrible dinners we've had in PR. Shirt steak was shoe leather tough and the salmon was so overcooked we couldn't eat it. My family has been in the restaurant business and I can see they are trying to make more profit by cutting down on food cost with inferior ingredients. Stay far far away. read more

An absolute must for puerto rican food! By no means did I expect to find this lovely hotel and resturant in Old San Juan. We were hopelessly lost and looking for our friends and the bellboy said that we should come back and try their very good puerto rican food. It WAS really good, and we only ended up here because our other 3 tourist-trap resturants were fully booked for hours. We didn't know if we would like puero rican food, but oh my their mofongo, alcapurria, and mallocra was so good that we can't even pick a favorite. This was the highlight of our trip. The El Convento hotel is an absolutely beautiful place. The last time I ate there I had an amazing meal at Picoteo, a tapas restaurant that used to be on the second floor balcony of the hotel. I made a reservation for Patio thinking that the food would be at the same level. It was not. It was absolutely mediocre if not worse. We had fish tacos, which were "meh". Edible but not enjoyable. My daughter ordered a fish. I'm not sure if it was a red snapper or a mahi. It was breaded in a thick breading and covered in a sauce that can only be described as an even thicker, chunkier, and less flavorful version of jarred tartar sauce. I ordered the tuna tartare, which is an appetizer as my main course. Tuna Tartare is pretty basic. As long as you start with super fresh fish, some soy sauce, some wasabi, and some sesame put together with the right balance of flavors is simple and elegant. I have never had to send back a tuna tartare and yet I did at this restaurant. It was absolutely flavorless. The tuna tasted like it had been frozen for a very long time before defrosted for my meal, and literally had no other flavors in it. It was inedible in my opinion. The only decent thing we had were the mini Mallorcas, and the drinks weren't bad. I was actually embarrassed that I brought a friend who is coming to visit the island to this restaurant when there are so many great gastronomic experiences in Puerto Rico. Went for breakfast but didn't stay. Only got 2 drinks and two plates to share between us three. My friends liked their drinks. Coconut drink was the best and espresso martini had multiple liquors. Coffee was also good. Steak and eggs were good and the potatoes it came with were fantastic, better than the steak. Season fruit bowl was sad, some of the fruits listed on the menu were there (mango and papaya). I understand it's seasonal, but don't give me a description and then turn left. Fruit wasn't too fresh or clean, felt right out the grocery package. It's in the hotel open courtyard so it was beautiful but beware of birds coming for a nibble. If the weather ain't nice, you gonna be sweating. Overall, we left because the menu was too American. Since it's in the hotel, they definitely have this menu to accommodate the American clientele. While we're American, we're latina. So we left to have an actual PR breakfast. If you want American food then this place is 5 stars. read more

We passed by El Convento multiple times throughout our stay it's a hotel that used to be a convent built in the 1800s. Now it is a hotel/restaurant. We went to the Patio del Nespiro restaurant for dinner one evening. Our server was Derek and he was absolutely wonderful. They have a very limited Wine list but good choices. We ordered the house salad that was greens blackberries, raspberries, toasted almonds with a balsamic reduction, and the watermelon cucumber salad with feta cheese that was absolutely delicious. For entrées, we got the lobster tail risotto that was very smooth and the lobster was perfect and the chicken dinner which came with a roasted chicken thigh, asparagus, broccoli rabinni, , potatoes, and brussels sprouts. Although the chicken was a little overdone and somewhat dry, everything else was tender and flavorful. We ordered the cheesecake and a flan, and they were both wonderful. read more

I gave this restaurant one star because the location is great. I wish I could rate it lower. We saw some mixed reviews about this place so My wife and I decided to order a few drinks and appetizers. The food was subpar at best, and was pretty expensive at that! The real disappointment was that they made us wait 30 minutes to be seated. Granted, we didn't have a reservation, but the place wasn't packed for us to wait this long. When we were seated near the kitchen, my leg got mauled by mosquitoes while waiting for our food. Currently a guest here at the hotel. My husband and I tried shared the NY Strip. It was easily one of the worst steaks we have ever had. I felt like every bite contained that muscle that makes a snap sound in your mouth. Just really gross. Beautiful patio restaurant located inside the El Convento hotel courtyard. My friends and I really wanted to have some eggs for breakfast so we ventured back into San Juan to eat in this hotel. It's a really beautiful space that's airy, full of plants and fans and the staff is really friendly too! The menu itself was pretty standard breakfast food with eggs, toast, potatoes, omelettes, and the only real "traditional" Puerto Rican meal there was the Mallorca, but it isn't vegetarian. The prices were pretty expensive in my opinion, but it is a hotel restaurant so I guess that's to be expected. However, you can't really do eggs too wrong and the scrambled eggs, toast, potatoes and fruit I ordered were pretty delicious! The house hot sauce was made by the chef that day and we all LOVED it. Unfortunately it wasn't for purchase, but I wish we could have purchased it! read more

The food presentation was lovely. My husband got the fish tacos, which he said were good and rated them a 4. I got the red snapper plate with veggies. The root veggies, broccolini, beets and carrots were roasted a little overdone, but tasty. However, the red snapper was so overcooked that it turned into a rubbery mass that was really inedible. I needed a steak knife to even try to cut off chunks. It was like eating fish "chewing gum "! I rated the veggies a 4, but the fish a 1. So after a LOT of wandering around old San Juan my friends and I were looking for a place to eat. We have one EXTREMELY picky eater and we were having a lot of trouble finding a place to eat. We were lucky to find Patio Del Nispero who had both availability and a menu my picky eater could work with. Our waiter Ricardo "Ricky" was the most genuine and thoughtful waiter I have had in a long long time. Service is a hard business, I myself was a cynical waiter long ago...but Ricky made us feel like we were the only table in the restaurant. He was happy to be with us and that was felt by everyone at the table. When a smile is genuine you can feel it even when it's physically covered by a mask. Ricky really made our night! I am 600 characters in and I haven't even gotten to the food. The shrimp mofongo was absolutely delicious. I have had some bad experiences with mofongo on the mainland, but this was divine. Everything that we has was delicious, the chicken pesto was a little heavy on the olive oil but the flavors were top notch. We would for sure eat here again if we find ourselves in old San Juan! read more

The food was not great. My chicken and waffle were both overcooked, an in addition they appeared to have been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. The water fountains and surrounding flora made for a great backdrop. The night before, we had pre dinner drinks and met Ricky! He's a mixologist and will make you an amazing concoction (try the passion fruit juice with vodka, or expect a perfect dry vodka martini if that's more your style). My wife and I had lunch at the Patio de Nispero in Nov 2024. The Convent is a very nice setting exceeded by the food and the service. We had the Mini Mallorcas and the Mamposteado Croquettes, Both dishes were firmly rooted in traditional Puerto Rican cuisine with interesting tweaks that were delicious. However, the thing that made the meal superb was the service provided by Indira. Came here on a Friday. There was a line but we got in like 10 minutes. Literally a patio bar lounge. They have music videos playing from a projector on the side of the building. Very clear view from the street. The glowing fountain gives a relaxing mood while you wait for food. The waitress took a long time just to order drinks. For it to be small place and not that many customers at a time you would think they would make that a big priority. The food was ok. The crab tostones was tasty but the tostone was too dry. Fantastic service, beautiful courtyard, and the best pina-colada in Puerto Rico. My mom and I went on a week-long quest for the best pina-colada, trying the highly recommended bars and hole-in-the-walls, and El Convento was the winner. This pina-colada is made with no ice, so it doesn't get ruined by a watery flavor. It was topped with Don Barrilito rum. It was a work of art: not to sweet, perfectly creamy and cool, and just enough of a kick. For lunch, we split 2 lunch entrees: the Cuban sandwich, and their soup of the day. Our kind waiter asked if we'd like our meals (since we were sharing) on two plates, so we could each have a little meal.He did this no extra charge, serving the soup first, and half a sandwich with fries on a little plate for the both of us. They gave great recommendations for the delicious mofongo and red snapper. We were staying in the hotel and had a long day and didn't want to travel too far for dinner so we ended up going downstairs, into the courtyard for dinner. Here's what we ordered: -Jibarito salad ($15): standard salad -beef stew with side dish of lobster risotto ($18): small portion of beef stew. The risotto was okay. The food could have been better and the price was expensive. Service was bad as we never got bread (another table got it). You sit under this massive tree that keeps dropping its seeds or worse, the fruit. The seeds don't hurt, it's just annoying that every once in awhile, you get hit on the head or arm or lap with a seed. read more

We came a couple times, once for a wedding where the service was excellent, but the second time we came during the day and the bartender was dismissive towards me. The moment you walk in you receive a warm greeting from the bartender Dorelys (if you love a bloodymary is your girl AMAZING!)
