Excellent! Loved this "Puerto Rico Theme" restaurant. From the waiting area, outside of the restaurant, with the rustic sitting, to the decor inside and the "uniforms" of the servers all conspired to transport the patrons to a bygone era. All of afore mentioned is in accordance to its name "Raíces" meaning, Roots. There is a festive atmosphere at Raíces. The typical food is second to none, great drinks and desserts too. During my visit R was not taking reservations, we put our name on the list and it was a good 1 1/2 hours. Raíces is a great place to visit and have a great dinner . Yep all is great at Raíces.
When I came here and had the surf n turf mofongo it became the best meal I had and wanted to go back (2019). First time back (2026) had to make it my first dinner of the trip and had to order the same dish. Looking forward to the garlic and butter sauce. The second time around the Mofongo was dry and steak seemed to be way undercooked. The steak had a different texture like it was cooked in a sous vide VS grilled. The flan was creamy but seemed that it was a tad undercooked lacking the holes and color. Drinks were tasty. The atmosphere was same and staff was great as always. . the portions suffered shrinkflation. Back then dishes were filling. I left hungry.
Loved the food here!! Our server was super kind and funny! We tried the salmon and the mofongo, which were both very filling. Would come back for sure!!
The place looks like an old fashioned type place, and the servers are all dressed up that way. The menu is large. The entire thing seems like a big tourist trap. we got an app and main to share. Spicy crab in a tostones cup. Its fake crab. For the main we got The Tornado. skirt steak, stuffed with shrimp and a brown mushroom sauce with mashed potatoes. It was good.
Another big discovery. Want the best Pina Colada ? This place here !! You can tell even the Cup is frozen. Good local vibe. Ordered the Pork . Serving is Soo big that 4 can share it . Great service. Great welcoming vibe
Great service, and nice cool air conditioning inside the restaurant. Located in a cute part of old San Juan, highly recommend after a day of walking the streets of old San Juan. Food was good and SUPER filling.
Stopped in for a few beers on our way back to our ship after a steamy day I. San Juan. Maybe it's a PR thing, but nobody here seems particularly friendly nor really caring about helping the customers. We sat at the bar a long time before finally being greeted and able to order. I guess it was fine for the most part after. Not that we were planning on having a second, but nobody asked us if we wanted more, and I had to flag the bartender down to get our bill. On the bright side, our $6.50 cans of Santurce Vienna Lager were pretty good.
We visited San Juan Puerto Rico as a stop on a 10 day cruise and went to Raices for lunch. Stepping inside was like stepping back in time. The servers wore back in time clothing and the decor felt authentic to the Old City. Service was warm and friendly and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The food was fantastic! I had the mofongo with red snapper in garlic sauce. My husband had the red snapper fillet with tostones, one dear friend had chicken empanadas with plantain soup and tostones made from breadfruit ( Caribbean folks know what it is) and the other dear friend had the fried pork chop with the chicharron and tostones. My cocktail was the spiced Pina colada and husband had the tamarind mojito. Everything was excellent! I highly recommend visiting this restaurant the next time you're in Old San Juan Puerto Rico.
This is a repeat visit to this 'famous' place in Old San Juan!! From the hostess to the waitress, all the staff are incredibly helpful! The meals are always delicious and authentic. The ambiance is very nice, loud when packed or when there's a celebration. A must try when in Old San Juan. (worth the wait)
Raices Times is an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. The place is absolutely huge, consisting of multiple dining areas. Wait times on a Monday evening around 5PM was negligible and we were seated pretty quickly. Service was prompt and good overall. I never tried mofungo, which we had steak inside a bowl of mashed plantains. The steak was good and juicy. I guess I'm not a fan of the mashed plantains, although I like plantains in general, this was dry and bland. This is my first time eating Puerto RIcan food, so I don't know if this is expected or not. Either way, I didn't really like this dish. The seafood paella was great. It had a good amount of seafood including some giant prawns. The star of the show was definitely the soup. It came with a side of plantains. Again, the plantains were somewhat bland. Unfortunately although recommended, the Kan kan pork chop was not good. It was a deep fried pork chop served with rice. The portion was huge, but the pork chop was dry and so hard to cut through. We ordered it medium, and the meat was definitely not medium. It was pretty much well down. All-in-all, service was great, food was meh, overall first time Puerto Rican restaurant experience, a 3-star event. Will try other ones in Old San Juan and see
we had an amazing time here and the server Nathalia was great and very attentive. We tried the mofongo tradicional and croquetas it was all amazing ! The place is big with plenty of room. I will definitely come here again!
Raíces was on my list to try as many people recommended it. I do think I have the desire to go again but it's conveniently located. The wait time on top of the food being unimpressive didn't entice me to return. Especially when other restaurants with Puerto Rican cuisine are close by. The bathrooms were filled with waste as there was no running water in the women's restroom and barely water coming from the faucet to clean your hands. With this being said, I was unable to utilize their facilities which made the wait for our food even more stressful. I tried the mofongo with chicken. Flavorful but there was more of the plantain than anything and it was not completely mashed. We also ordered the snapper filet with garlic butter sauce and it wasn't too bad but my boyfriend enjoyed. I'd recommend checking the wait time as they do not do reservations and using the restroom before arriving just in case what I experienced was the norm. I'd just assume for such a busy restaurant, cleanliness would be prioritized.

They serve hands down the BEST mofongo in the entire city. It was just absolutely delicious. The food was served in cute barrels and the setting was just so inviting. Will definitely be back here
My last visit to Raices was years ago and had to give them a try again. They have very friendly service and the ambiance is set back as the servers wear clothing as back in the earlier days. The food servings are huge. Most meals can literally feed two people. My son, his wife and I shared a seafood mofongo and the Chuleta Kan Kan with rice and beans. The food is amazing and the beers were ice cold. Overall we had a very good experience. read more

This place is overrated. While they seat guests very quickly, the service at the front was extremely disappointing. The hostess had a terrible attitude and was quite rude. I was simply waiting to ask a question when she told me I was "blocking her air," which was unnecessary and unprofessional. This happened around 4:30-5:00pm, I understand it can get busy, but that's not a valid excuse to treat customers poorly. On a positive note, our waitress was very kind and professional, which we appreciated. However, we waited over an hour for our food, which was excessive. To make matters worse, as we were about to leave, we witnessed a same hostess grab a chair, sat down, when we noticed she took off her shoe, and start scratching her foot--right in the restaurant. That was completely inappropriate and off-putting. Overall, not a great experience. read more

Raíces was on my list to try as many people recommended it. I do think I have the desire to go again but it's conveniently located. Raices Times was by far the best restaurant my friends and I tried during our trip in Puerto Rico. We put our name on their waitlist around 6:30pm and got called back at 8pm. They told us it would be about a 90-minute wait, so it wasn't a surprise to us. My friends and I ordered a variety of their mofongus (skirt steak, Puerto Rican sausage, and shrimp) and their famous fried pork chop! The latter was because of a recommendation we saw on Yelp! Once we placed our order, it took another 85 minutes until the food came out. While this is long to us, it was pretty standard throughout our entire stay in PR! All of the mofongus were so good! We had tried another place earlier and their mofongu was over powered with garlic flavor. Theirs was the perfect mix of garlic and onion. The skirt steak was a little chewy, but the buttery sauce it was cooked in made the meat very flavorful. The sausage and shrimp were also delicious. I would recommend the sausage one the most. The biggest surprise was the fried pork chop! It came out on a huge plate and was streaming off the plate. The meat was so tender and coated with a perfect light, but crunchy fry. I really enjoyed this place. If you order their shots, just know they serve it in double shot portions read more

We went here on my birthday and I was hoping to have a phenomenal meal unfortunately, the meal I got, which was steak with onions was disgusting. It was vinegar and boiled meat. The service was horrible and I will never be done here again. We came here on a recommendation from someone who had the fried fish everyone else on my table who had other meals thoroughly enjoyed their meals and it looked delicious so I am just basing this review off of my personal experience and my meal. I was in a mood and did not advise our server how unhappy I was with the meal so I chose not to touch it. All I ate was about two sweet plantains. Hubby wasn't very thrilled with me. He thought I was wasting food, but what can you do? I must say the fried cheesecake was amazing! That was my birthday piece so at least the dessert made up for my meal. read more

The Mariscos Mix with Mofongo was delicious! Get the garlic sauce! Mix up the sauce/broth with every bite of mofongo to make it easier to eat since the mofongo can get a bit dry and it's all packed densely at the bottom. This is the way to go if you get a mofongo dish since the garlic broth keeps the mofongo moist. Delicious!! My friend ordered the pork mofongo which didn't have a broth and so it was drier and tougher to eat. We also went on Christmas night. Initially I was worried that places might not be open. Not an issue since Old San Juan was super lively. The place was packed but our waitress was great! read more

The service was great. Couldn't be happier with sitting in a dry place.. it was late. It was late, and there was a wait, but they allowed us at the bar. Elivis, the bartender, was really pleasant to talk to and made some great drinks for us. I was pretty satisfied with my shrimp plate. I felt like it wasn't heavy and a good amount of food. On the other hand, my husband ordered a grilled chicken and rice. I must say it was really dry and definitely lacked some flavor. The rice was really good! It's a cute place and definitely for tourists.. yet I believe authentic none the less. I did see someone with an amazing seafood paella platte.. it looked pretty good. If you have some more room, I'd give that a try. read more

I was recommended this restaurant by many people who have traveled to Puerto Rico and love them! I was so happy I went! Our waitress was so nice and they were the fastest restaurant I went to in Puerto Rico which I appreciate when I am trying to your old San Juan in a timely manner. The food was DELICIOUS! I got some shrimp garlic dish and my husband got steak and fries. I completely loved it and it was my favorite restaurant in Puerto Rico! Definitely would recommend to anybody visiting Old San Juan. Also I loved the waitress outfits (the old fashioned dresses). Love love love it and will be back on my next trip! read more
Loved this place.I enjoyed the veg Mafango served in the wooden pot.My husband enjoyed shrimp Mafango. This is a must visit place.The wait is too long make sure to give your name and phone number so they would call once the table is available.The drinks were awesome,We had strawberry,Passion fruit and pinacolada. read more
This place was recommended by one of the locals and I must say it did not disappoint at all !! I've only had Mofongo maybe twice in all of life but this was definitely the best tasting. The flavor was point . The skirt steak was a little chewy but the flavor was great. The shrimp were also very good. Unfortunately they only give you three shrimp. But overall good service and it was pretty busy. I would definitely recommend if looking for good Mofongo in PR read more

Came in based on a local's recommendation. To drink I got the Raices del Cielo and he got the Black Mule. Both good, but my drink was superior for sure. To eat we got Queso Frito, Sorullitos del Maiz, Churrasco al Chimichuri Mofonga, Fish Tacos Premia'o, and a side of beans n rice. The appetizers were both very good and the fish tacos....I would come back for those. Amazing. The crab on top was so, so good!!! The mofonga was ok, I wouldn't order that again. But 100% go for the fish tacos with crab on top. Service was good, ambiance is that of a normal restaurant. read more
Nice restaurant in Old San Juan, parking lot right across the street. We walked in on a Monday afternoon and we were told the wait was 20 minutes, so we put our name down and went to bar while we waited. The bartender was busy as he was the only one for the whole restaurant. Within 15 minutes the hostess came to the car and sat us at our table. The waiter was friendly we got our food fairly quick. We got the mar y tierra mofongo with skirt steak and shrimp. I am a mofongo fan but the mofongo was way too salty, so I wasn't able to eat it all. The red snapper was good with the creole sauce. The decor around the restaurant is awesome the murals on the wall are nice and they have real artifacts hanging around. read more

MUST VISIT IF YOURE IN SAN JUAN!!!! omgsh. where to start? well, first of all, you recognize the place because the ladies outside waiting to seat u are in beautiful white dresses (uniform to look like pilgrimage days) ready to hand u a menu and let u inside. the decor is incredible, there's bright colors all over the place and what look like live scenes from back in the day. great place for couples romantic dinner, or a flirty afternoon lunch with they're creamy and never separating pina colada- yummyyyyyy probably the best one i had in san juan. i highly recommend the churrasco steak, mine was actually pretty amazing medium rare, not dry at all, accompanied by a delicious mamposteado rice. my date ordered the paella de carnes. omgsh. i ended up asking him to trade plates because his plate was SO FINGER LICKING TASTY. read more

It was my birthday we waited two hrs to get in and I was ok with this. When we finally got in we were seated. Waitress was really nice and so was all the staff. Ambience: friendly family crowd. Cute place and music was not over powering. Food: my husband ordered the kankan chuleta rice and beans & I just ordered a a pollo/chicken asopao/rice soup. Both meals were bland we were very unhappy with the meal. The best part of coming to this place was when they came over to sing happy birthday.. other that I don't think I will be coming back. Not going to lie, I was very skeptical about coming to raices. When I did my research of food places I wanted to try in Old San Juan, most of them said it is a "tourist trap". When we arrived, we heard from multiple locals that this a must try place. I am SO GLAD I listened to the locals!! This is one of the best Mofongos I've had. I tried a couple around during my stay in San Juan and I will say, this was the winner! I tried the chicken in a garlic sauce Mofongo and it was AMAZING. My boyfriend had the longaniza Mofongo in salsa criolla and it was so so good. The green plantains were cooked to perfection, not dry at all. They are in a very touristy area since they are close to the cruises port, but this did not seem like a tourist trap for me at all!! For the amount of food, it seemed very reasonably priced. Their drinks are very small for the price though, so if you rather save a little on your meal, this is a good save. Although they were small though, I will say their passion fruit mojito was amazing! Everyone was very attentive and the place is beautiful! This is a must try place and definitely not a tourist trap! read more
