    Kunafa
    Sugunthan S.

I have been here twice already. The service at this small family run pastry shop is amazing. Don't be fooled by "small" as there is a lot to choose from. So many different mouthwatering Baklavas that you will love. During the holidays there are even uniquely wrapped pastries that can be gifted to loved ones. Pro Tip: the Kunafa is only available on the weekends. Go early as it sells out fast. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask the staff as they are so patient and go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of ! If you have a sweet tooth and are willing to try something new you have to try Patisserie Royale.

I'd try back to Scarborough in a heart beat, to come back to Patisserie Royale. Beautiful and bright interiors. A great variety of Arabic sweets offered. Loved the details in store, with the signs with explanations. I wasn't sure what to get as I came across this place when I happened to be in the plaza. So to try, I only got a dozen of mamoul (walnut & pistachio mix) this time. It turned out to be one of the best ones I had. It was fresh and I loved that the rosewater wasn't overpowering because a lot of times, I've noticed it at other places. Another place I'd previously go to (crown pastries) served stale cookies last time & the scent of the bukhoor used in store was pretty much absorbed into the cookies which I hated. So I'm glad I came across pâtisserie rotale, as this will be my go-to from now. Staff was very nice as well. I'd love to go back to try the petit fours & kunafa.

Delicious and a must try. If you love desserts that are flaky, moist and crunchy... This is it! Everything we got was amazing. My favourite based on the pictures in order. I have no idea the proper names... So descriptive words will have to do 1) the triangle 2) the circle 3) the mini rectangle baklava 4) the open square folded one 5) the square with the pistachio on top ALL were absolutely delicious but if I had to order it based on favourites... This is it. The owners are amazing and even gave us a sample! Definitely head over if you're in Scarborough. It's a walk in bakery - one small area to sit but definitely not a dine in spot.

I was told that Patisserie Royale had the best Baklava in the city! I stopped in since I was in the area and went a little crazy sampling some items. I picked up a lot but there was still much more to try. All the pastries were super flaky and buttery. You can tell this is homemade with love. I sampled both types of Baklava (walnut and pistachio) Swar, Assabieh, Karabige and Mammoul cookies. Everything was great and I lost track of what was what. Lol. I need to take better notes. I may have gotten a bit too much but I'm sure they won't last too long once the family gets to sample them. I will definitely be back. These would be great items to bring when visiting family and friends.

Patisserie Royals was a fancy take out Lebanese pastries place. There are many kinds of pastries in the shop. There are no seats and tables, but there is a counter we can eat in. I ordered Cheese Kanafeh and that was very good. They heated a piece of Kanafeh and gave me with syrup for me since I asked to let me eat inside. After I had it, I also asked another one to take home. They sell pastries by weight and I am not familiar with weight since I am from different background. They kindly sold by a piece since I did not know how to buy pounds. They are very kind people and have good qualities pastries.

I was looking up a dessert location nearby on Yelp and found this place. Patisserie Royale serves Middle Eastern pastry and when I saw photos of kanafeh on Yelp, I knew I had to come here!! When I walked in with my friend, I didn't see kanafeh in the pastry case and was somewhat disappointed but when I asked, a worker showed me that they have it hidden behind the pastry case. I was super excited to order it!! The worker asked if it was our first visit and I said "yes!" and he offered me and my friend a free sample of the kanafeh that he kindly warmed up for us--what a welcome!! Biting into the kanafeh was just.. indescribable! The sweet flavour of the dessert infused with rose water and the stringiness of the cheese... I am salivating just trying to describe this! I ordered other pastries along with the kanafeh and each are delicious! The pastries average about $1 a piece, which is extremely reasonable, especially since the quality of the pastries are quite high!! They also have a small seating area by the window that allowed me to gobble a piece of pastry before I head home--love it! I highly recommend this location!! I plan to be back some time to get more kanafeh!!

    Halawet el-jibn

I cannot believe I haven't written a review for this place yet. This is a little family-owned Lebanese pastry shop that is honestly a hidden gem. The second you walk inside, you see an array of petit-four pastries that are commonly seen and a staple of Lebanese cuisine. The shop is clean and the service is great. I've tried a few of the baklava style pastries here and they are fantastic. But this review is in honour of the most delicious piece of cheesy heaven. They sell something called Halawet el-jibn, which on their website they call sweet cheese. It's the most amazing dessert you'll ever try, especially if you love cheese. But it's not just any cheese.. there's a mix of different cheeses with semolina, then topped with pistachios and rose water. Honestly, I'm drooling as I type this and as I'm eating it! The great thing about this dessert is that you can have it in a "cake" shape like I did (look at the picture I posted). Or, you could get it rolled into small pieces perfect for parties. However, you have to call ahead (about 24 hours) and ask them to roll it and they'll place it for you on a cute plate ready to be served. I highly recommend this place and will most definitely keep coming back!

    Mafroukeh - $/kg

I found out about Patisserie Royale's relocation, after reading an article in the TO Star. Through this article, I also found out that they had kanafeh in pita ($5) and this semolina-based dessert, Mafroukeh. (I've only found the kanafeh sandwich in one other place, Arz.) Prior to this new location at Ellesmere/Kennedy, they were at Lawrence/Vic Park. Somewhat shady area, unit was definitely out-of-date, and it was located in a rundown strip mall. This new unit is more upscale, elegant (marble tiled), with heavy Euro-influence. If you wanted to enjoy your pastries on-site, a few stools were available. Kanafeh in Pita - Alright. Maybe it wasn't warmed up enough in micro, but it was better the first time I had it. I had a few bites and will save the rest up for breakfast, will warm up for longer in the AM, enjoying with some coffee. Mafroukeh (by weight) - Yummm. Really good! I'd recommend this one as I don't see it available at other baklava places. Customer service was quite nice. They offered me a sample when I inquired about their mafroukeh, BUT that also enticed me to actually purchase a piece! Various baklava - Price is by weight, it's approx. $1/pc. To be honest, I prefer the taste at my usual place in Mississauga. If I were in the area, I wouldn't hesitate to stop by for the pita/mafroukeh. Would be nice if they had some caffeinated beverages as an option. Aside from the drinks in the fridge, I never saw any other drink options.

Our second trip to this hidden gem, has not disappointed. Clean, small bakery with display cases filled with Middle Eastern sweets! We came to get a variety of treats to bring to a BBQ and we left with a chocolate sample that was so flavourful and filled with nuts! Our first trip, we also had some sweets thrown in to try and keep us coming back.

As a self proclaimed baklawa expert I felt it imperative to impart some knowledge. It's all about the layers...real baklawa is labour intensive, brushing a bit of butter on each thin sheet and then layering layer by layer. This gives it the light but crunchy bite we all love. Cheap baklawa is chewy because they will stack and layer multiple layers resulting in a chewy soggy baklawa. So look for the flaky crisp layers people. Class dismissed

Unfortunately I left with a strong sense of disappointment. We ordered beef shawarma that was dry and dull (though I concede that if we had gotten the house made hot sauce it would have likely been fire), and then ordered two skewers of shrimp with some sides. The seafood is served from a secondary restaurant to the beef/ chicken one - and though they didn't seem incredibly busy, we waited 45 minutes for two skewers! The more frustrating aspect was that I definitely saw people order and receive their food before me. When I asked, I was told that people had preordered food before coming, and while that may be the case I refuse to believe that two skewers took 45 minutes. I would have understood if someone told me they forgot about my order or they had a problem with the kitchen, but none such explanation happened. They didn't even apologize and the cashier seemed to actively avoid me, and instead busied herself by chatting with friends or cleaning up the odd table. In the end we only received the food after we actively started to leave without it. If there was a friendlier service experience I would go back and give them a second chance, but the cashier's attitude really put me in a bad place. I hope that this was a one off especially since they seem to have such a loyal clientele.

Well-lit, slightly modern looking decor, comfy atmosphere that's pretty casual. Lots of different people helped us out, took our order, brought food etc. but it felt like the service while good, was just slightly below great. We got the veggie clay pot and the mixed grill to share between two people, and my son got a fattoush salad and the kebbeh. The mixed grill was great, all the meats were flavourful, and tender/juicy. It came with a lamb/beef kebab, some beef tenderloin, and some chicken. I think there were roast potatoes too, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that part. The veggie stew was poured onto a plate of bulgur and was really really good. Lots of flavour, all the veggies (carrots, cauliflower, onions, etc.) were tender. the juices ran through the bulgur which made for a great side dish to go with the meat. The kebbeh was tasty but still a bit disappointing -- there were only three, and didn't feel like quite enough to make a meal. Luckily the fattoush salad was huge otherwise my son would have left the restaurant hungry. Compared to some of the dishes we saw on other tables, this dish seems to be an outlier in terms of quantity of food, and it's certainly not worth the $28 price; I wouldn't recommend it. Despite the disappointment with the one meal, all the food was delicious and I still felt like the meal on the whole was good value, and I wouldn't mind going back to try some of their other dishes.

We opted for the vegetarian mix-and-match plates, which came with either rice or salad, 5 small sides, and 3 falafels. Most of the items were pretty good, my favourites being the arnabeet (cauliflower), eggplant with chickpeas and tomato-based sauce, bamya (okra), and white cannellini beans salad. The warak enab (also called dolma or stuffed grape vine leaves) was flavourless and had too much ratio-to-grape vine leaves ratio (more rice inside that I'd like). The tabbouleh was way too salty.
