Their pastry choices were limited but well reputed. My Greek acquaintance recommended this place :). Tried spanakopita ($6.99). The size was perfect - just enough to satisfy one person and they cut it into biting size if requested. It was served warm. Flaky and savory. Less oily and salty than most other places. Some people (like my daughter!) may feel that it is not as rich because of it, but I liked their spanakopita's simple delicacy. I also got Loukoumades. It is a bite size fried pieces of dough soaked in syrup and covered with honey with cinnamon powder sprinkled on top. I felt it was a bit too sweet and oily for my liking, but the pieces were one-bite size and easy to eat.

Loukoumathes (deep fried honey puffs)
David Y.

I worship whichever Greek God gifted Athens Pastries with their loukoumathes recipe. Airy yet substantive, always seeming to taste freshly made, and the perfect level of sweetness - gawd those were heavenly honey puffs! Their pies are pretty good too. The spanakopita (spinach pie), tiropita (cheese pie), and galaktoboureko (custard pie) are all super flaky. And while I would have wanted a bit more filling, they are still worth a try and reasonably priced. Suggest having them cut up the pie so it's easier to eat and/or store. There's a lot of competition in the area with similar offerings, but definitely Athens Pastries is worth a visit.

loukoumades

Seriously my favorite spot for the Loukoumades! I cannot emphasize how great these are. They are fresh, sweet and spongy and I have yet to find another spot in Toronto that makes them like they do here at Athens Pastries. If you get a chance, grab a coffee with your Loukoumades and sit on their little patio on the Danforth and enjoy these along with the Danforth crowd.

One of my fav spots to grab spanakopita esp in Toronto Athens has been around for a hot minute even during times Greek town has seen better days. They have the best loukoumades outside of Greece hands down

Delicious loukoumades and fredo espresso. Friendly service, and nut free which is a bonus for those with allergies!

a display of pastries and pastries

Went by in the evening before they closed to pick up Some sweets. The lokumades where tasty. These are doe balls fried and dipped in syrup. Yummy. Also trying pastry that was filo filled with custard like a sandwich. Sold by the square. These were also dipped in syrup. They were rich and tasty.

The best balls I've ever tasted
Fox E.

If you only eat one savoury thing in Toronto, it has to be fried pork and chive dumplings at Dumpling House on Spadina. But if you have only one dessert... get here... get the Greek Honey Balls. I'm serious. It sounds obscene but the taste is more obscene than anything you can imagine. Yes, even you. Not me. But you. At first I thought this was a place where they serve Paella, suckling dead baby pigs and Bulls. But that's actually Madrid Pastries. It's also not the place with the really snobby servers and high prices (Paris Pastries), or the place full of lunatics that think their island is a ship that can set sail for North America and finally be reunited with the rebels (London Pastries). What to get: Loukamades - Greek Honey Balls. Er. Did you say... Honey Balls...: Look just get them okay. Order them in Greek if it makes you uncomfortable. Anything else: Galaktoboureko (custard pie) and Spanakopita (Spinach Pie) are both really good. Those Greeks love their pies, don't they. And their honey balls. Well. Literally one of the best desserts you will ever eat in your life. Loukamades. These balls are seriously sticky and seriously perfect. I can't describe them. You have to come up to Toronto - right now - and try them. Probably the only sweet thing in Toronto that is better than the amaaaaazing Créme Brulée donuts at nearby Von, these Honey Balls are some of the best Balls of any kind I've ever put in my mouth. And that includes all kinds. I mean, including Falafel Balls and Arancini Balls. What did you think I meant? Ew. Come on. Really? I would never. (Fingers Crossed Behind Back) The long line for pastries is not always dealt with efficiently (it would be at Berlin Pastries), and sometimes I wonder if some of the servers are high on something (but then I remember, that only happens at Amsterdam Pastries). That one tall blonde girl that used to work here was pretty amazing (until she defected to work at Stockholm Pastries). And I like that they always open right on time, always close right on time, and execute all of their rivals (oh wait that's Moscow Pastries). I first tried them during the Danforth St Festival aka Taste Of Danforth. They were packed out the door and also selling them outside. They were soooooooo good, and so much better than anyone else who was offering them. Accept no substitute! You must get them from here! Get your Gyro at Messini and your balls here at Athens! Young boys follow me outside this bakery on their mopeds and hit on me, much like at Rome Pastries. It could be worse, because their baked goods could taste completely neutral and bland, like at Bern Pastries (and its sister stores, Geneva Pastries and Zurich Pastries). And I appreciate that even when all the customers are drunk, the servers never are (unlike Dublin Pastries and Belfast Pastries). The honey balls are only wee little balls lassie but they're bloody good (so says the baker over at Edinburgh Pastries). Anyway I have a multiple-person date to go on now (with the girls from Prague Pastries, Budapest Pastries, Bucharest Pastries, Tirana Pastries and Sofia Pastries, if you must know). And if you feel (like those girls often do, which is how I met them) like showing it all off at the festival, New Orleans Style, then you can also pick up some Athens Pastys from Athens Pastries. Their Spinach Pie here is also really good, but nothing compares to those balls of heaven. They put the "ho" in Honey. In a good way. Or is it put the Honey in Ho. Oh no that's something else. Never mind. Did you hear, by the way, that Istanbul Bakery is trying really hard to get into the Bakery Business? But the other bakeries aren't sure if they want to let them in on a slice of the pie... so to speak. Sadly, I found out that the store is completely bankrupt. And now I finally understand why they are named Athens Pastries.

Custard dessert
Karen K.

I am in love with desserts in Greek Town. Ever since my friend's work place moved to The Danforth, I started venturing around the area for cheap eats. Early on, I discovered Athens, and I fell in love. I've tried quite a bit here. Usually, I get a dozen loukamades, a custard dessert, a spinach pie, and a custard pie. For the pies, the filling is abundant, enveloped by a thin, flaky crust. The contrast in textures and flavours between the sweet/savoury filling and the slightly sweet, buttery crust is what I think keeps it interesting. I appreciate how the custard pie isn't overly sweet as well, provided that you opt out of the additional toppings the staff offers upon serving you. As for the spinach pie, it's mouthwatering, albeit a little heavy. It's probably the best spinach pie I've had in Toronto! This is my family's favourite and it is pretty fail-proof if you're looking for something to bring back home for others. Additionally, the custard pie is on point if you've got a massive sweet tooth like me. It's a moist custard cake doused in honey. You also have the option of adding cinnamon to it, which I recommend to add another dimension to the flavour palette. Yes, it is very sweet, and as such, some people might not like it. I, on the other hand, adore this cake because of its moist texture and because of how the flavour of the custard still cuts through the heavy dose of honey. Lastly, the loukamades are a great resource for parties. It's only a little over 3 bucks for a dozen, so buying in bulk while on a budget is very possible. They look like donut holes/timbits marinated in honey. They are soft, sticky, and sweet. My mom really loves them, especially with cinnamon sprinkled on top. However, some people, like my bf, find it a bit too oily and sweet for their liking. Even I can't take more than two in a sitting before the oil and honey gets to me. Nevertheless, I'm sure at least the majority of your party will like them. Just make sure you serve them with a glass of water, milk, tea, or coffee (avoid sweet drinks). There's a lot to love here at Athens from the savoury desserts to the cheap price point to the mouthwatering spinach pie. I would say the only negative point would be that they only accept cash and debit. Hopefully they'll add credit as a payment option one day. Then, I'd be visiting every day!

This is the BEST place to get fresh loukoumades. These honey bombs are served warm and can be topped off with cinnamon. I always stop here after I eat a gyros from Messini. The restaurant is clean and there is indoor seating. However, the Danforth neighborhood is a great area to explore so I like to walk and eat the loukoumades. They are very caloric so walking makes me feel less guilty for eating so many :-).

I love flaky pastry.. and that Spinach Pie at Athen's Pastries (Spanokopita) tasted awesomely good... I always glad that sign language is universal, point, smile and pay and you will receive... Athens Pastries works with that same system... Imagine the day that if one cannot pronounce the name of the food correctly, one cannot eat... I will be starving in Germany and Greek for sure!! I think a certain yelper told me about another location of Athens Pastries in Scarborough.. that would be my next destination to practise my Greek food vocabulary!

Iced cappuccino and spinach pie. Great value! ~$8.70.
Jimmy L.

Daaaaammn this is good. Came for a "quick iced drink" on a hot spring day. Got iced cappuccino ($3.85) and spinach pie ($3.85?). After finishing that amazing pie, got honey balls to finish with my sizable drink. Got a cheese pie to go. Large portions. Amazing taste and quality. Fantastic price. The whole thing cost me $8.70 + $5.90 for medium iced capp, two pies, and 6 honey balls. Fantastic! Can't wait to bring more ppl next time. Super casual but clean place. 5 stars out of 5. Jimmy's Yelp Ratings Scale for Food: [*] Disappointing. Just...no. [**] Not very good. Will not return. [***] It is what it is. Go enough times and you'll break even on quality. [****] My go-to place. Rarely disappoints. [*****] Everything on menu is good. Every time.

Very solid place that one probably had a similar experience if they went there 20 years ago…read more I had the moussaka and it was just what I wanted. The rice was actually a lot better than I expected. I know it's just a side, but rice at times from other Greek places isn't that great, and this was much better. My wife had the mix grill plate, and I helped. She absolutely loved the lamb. It was largely over the quality and the prep was fairly standard, but there's nothing wrong with that. The other parts didn't jump out, but were still perfectly good. The service was very attentive.

The potato layer feels fluffy and sandwiches thinly sliced eggplant, so the aubergine is rather pronounced. The ground beef mixture wasn't overly spiced and even the bechamel sauce was a thin layer, so it toasts the top but doesn't saturate the slice. Ultimately, it's not heavy so you could get through a full portion. A flaming saganaki ($19.95), the pan fried kefalotiri cheese, is a staple in Canadian Greek restaurants. It seems touristy to order but there's something endearing about setting a piece of cheese on fire and yelling "opa"! For me, the dish is more for the atmosphere than taste. Pantheon pan fries the cheese well, so it develops a crust even prior to flambeeing and serves it as a thick gooey slice. If only the accompanying bread wasn't so dry and mealy, a good saganaki calls for a better complement. Almost all their mains arrive with a sizeable Greek side salad that's smartly served first containing ample amounts of crumbled feta and some tomato, cucumbers, and onion over romaine. Their dressing is different, tamer and while still acidic there's a sweetness to it. Not sure, but perhaps they use a red wine vinegar and then blend the ingredients together so it's better combined? With the fishkebob souvlaki ($36.95) I was expecting fish, but it's really a seafood kebob containing shrimp, calamari and mushroom. It's cooked well with a faint grilled aroma, very tender, and lightly salted. Sadly, my steamed vegetables were merely carrots and didn't have the delicious garlicky green beans included on my friends' plates. Luckily, there was plenty with the moussaka so I could augment mine. At least there was an ample portion of roasted lemon potatoes that were soft and fluffy with a refreshing pronounced citrus finish. Pantheon doesn't skimp on the lamb chops that arrive with the entrée. And if you can't decide on what protein you'd like, their menu also offers some as add-ons. The lamb chop by the piece ($11.95) was bit gamier than I'd like but was cooked to a perfect medium doneness. A complimentary honey cake arrives for the table and is almost like having baklava in cake form. Just watch out, as the moist crumbly cake is difficult to pick up with a fork. Don't waste a bit of this delicious dessert, just use your fingers.

Me and some family members were in the area, and decided to give it a try. We were greeted and seated promptly and then, for the longest time ... nothing. As it turned out, we'd spend a lot longer at this restaurant than we had anticipated. After about 20 minutes, a kind and apparently exhausted waitress appeared, so we ordered drinks and saganaki to start. 10 minutes later, our drinks appeared, and we ordered our main courses then. Although the menu gave prices for wine by the glass, half litre or bottle, we were told that they don't have enough wine to offer any more than a glass at a time. Strange, and unexpected. Eventually, the saganaki (Greek flaming cheese) arrived, and it was really, really good - a generous triangle of grilled, flaming cheese, easily split between the three of us. It was served with some odd bread, which resembled buttered and toasted hot dog or burger buns. This helped take the edge off our hunger as we waited for our main course. And waited. Looking at the time, I noticed that we had already spent over 60 minutes in the restaurant, which was extremely chilly on a cold winter's evening. Many customers, including us, wore their coats throughout the evening. Apparently, the restaurant dining area is heated only by two electric fire places. Our waitress came out and let us know that we had to wait because my daughter's order of octopus was taking a while. At this point, we had already committed to being here, so we had no choice but to see it through. Finally, the food came out. My daughter's octopus was, sadly, overcooked and tough, but still tasty, and the lemon roasted potatoes were excellent. My husband's roasted lamb did not seem like it was prepared as a roast, as there was no browning or roast] flavor, but seemed to have been prepared in a pressure cooker or slow cooker. I had ordered the Moussaka, and had high expectations, based on my memory of Milo's creamy, eggplant-filled, nicely seasoned Moussaka of my distant, long-ago previous visit. However, my portion of Moussaka had the oddest texture: rather mushy and grainy. The well-seasoned, savory tasting ground beef of my memories had now been transformed into a rather average-tasting ground beef mixture that would have been equally at home in a sloppy joe. And I could not find an eggplant in the casserole at all ... well, maybe it had somehow been reduced to such mushiness that it lost it's eggplant quality, but I could swear that it was missing. It was all edible food, though, but not up to our expectations. I hate to give any place a lowly, two-star review. I had hoped for much more, because there is so much about Milo's to raise one's hopes: it's not a big chain, but locally, family-run; it has an appealing and timeless Mediterranean decor; and the menu offers many interesting Greek choices. A few small changes would be an upgrade: better bread, some additional staff and a few space heaters would be a good start. Milo's is the type of restaurant that I would love to support, but I've read enough reviews with similar observations that I am unlikely to return.

It was really hard to flag down our waitress as she never made eye contact towards our table, so my friend had an empty drink for 20min. The food was good once it came out though. Beyond the presentation, the cheese itself was excellent... crisp on the outside, warm and soft inside, and really well seasoned. Easily something I'd come back for. The mango ginger spritz was light and refreshing, not too sweet, the Australian lamb chops were cooked nicely, tender, and full of flavor without being overly heavy. Greek restaurants where I'm from (San Diego, California) use Roma tomato, small feta crumbles (so little feta it's just "feh", not imported from Greece), no oregano, cheap olive oil. Five minute walk from Chester station on line 2 of the subway ("TTC"). Does not take reservations. Not wheelchair accessible.
