This morning I was on my neighborhood walk with my little dog and passed Patrick Richards salon. There was a man in the window (I'm not sure if it was Patrick or another gentleman working.) my dog was sniffing the bushes and I smiled at the man. He proceeded to come out of the salon and harass me. He said "do you get off on your dog shi$4@;ting all over." At first I could not really understand what he was saying and I smiled and said "huh!?" And he proceeded to harass me and say inappropriate things to me about my dog. I was simply walking my dog in my neighborhood. And let me be clear, my dog was sniffing, he did not poop or pee. But even if he did, it was a public sidewalk? To ask me if I "get off" on my dog just being on a walk with me on a Monday morning was so incredibly inappropriate. Shame on this business and whoever this man was. I was simply minding my own business and he had to ruin my morning when I did absolutely nothing. I hope this mans day gets better and he chooses kindness over hatred to people in his neighborhood. read more

This is re: Gray. Looking for a color expert (who understands the science and knows how to produce a predictable result) in SF, I made a cold call to Patrick, who realized that I am a picky picky picky very knowledgeable person re: color, so he mentioned Gray, described him as a perfectionist, new to salon. Gray! He did my hair years ago at another place. Gray says he's older now (I'm not). He listened, pondered, then he performed. Picky picky left with beautiful blonde hair, just what picky asked for. I look forward to a styling there. read more

This is a three-part review: one for Emy, one for the Keratin treatment, and one for the salon itself. Keratin treatment: 3 stars For those of you who have never done this before or are unfamiliar with it, it's basically a really uncomfortable procedure that bans you from doing anything with your hair for 72 hours. This includes washing, tying it up, pushing it behind your ears, and sweating. Basically, you can't change the shape of your hair after the treatment has been applied. The treatment is supposed to smooth out your hair, but don't be misled: unlike the Japanese straightening treatment, which irons out your hair permanently, you will not wake up with perfect hair, and if you choose not to blow-dry your hair, it will not dry perfectly in shape. However, the treatment did make my hair significantly smoother and required less styling when I was blow-drying. Supposedly it gets better the more you do it (supposedly it lasts a few months), but that's pricey at close to or over $300 a pop. If you're looking for a low-maintenance straightening, I'd recommend the Japanese system over this one, because it costs about the same and takes just a bit more amount of time to do (I spent about 2 hours in the salon total, whereas with the Japanese straightening, it took a little over 3 hours). Emy: 4.5 stars Emy was really great about doing the treatment and giving me a bang trim at the end. She's one of those super sweet, talkative, friendly ladies and I'm totally a fan of her and the Keratin job she did, although I suppose I have nothing else to compare it to, as it was my first time doing the Keratin treatment. However, I wasn't a fan of the bang trim she gave me. For my cuts, I'd rather stick with Jeff at Groove. The salon: 4 stars Compared to Groove, which has a very large, open warehouse feel, the Patrick Richards salon is small, cozy and inviting. It's one of those super adorable, cute Laurel Heights places that I can totally see neighborhood folks going to on a regular basis. It's below street level and it goes pretty far back, so there's not a whole lot of natural lighting that comes in, but it's nicely lit and clean. Drawback: they only accept cash and checks. For a salon to offer pricey services like the Keratin treatment and not accept credit cards is a major fail in my book, as I didn't have my checkbook with me and didn't want to trek in the rain to the ATM. There's street parking that's metered, and if you walk a bit more off Sacramento Street, there's 2-hour unmetered parking, which may be difficult to find on a Saturday. (For those of you wondering how the story ends, I had a Gilt City coupon for the Keratin treatment so it was pre-paid. I ended up shelling out all of my cash to leave for a tip) read more

Upon a friend's recommendation, I made an appointment with Mia to get my hair colored, and upon Mia's recommendation, with Diana to get it cut. I have gone to a couple of other places since moving to SF to get my hair done, and while okay with the work, not bowled over. Well, I can very happily say that I have found my new hair salon. First off, Mia and Diana are spectacularly cool and nice, but even more importantly, they are hair geniuses (genii?), and they are in my mind pretty damn reasonable, price-wise. Diana did a rocking job on my cut and her enthusiasm for my plan of world domination via growing my hair out actually mirrored my own. And my new luminous flaxen color courtesy of Mia? The sun itself shielded its face in jealousy over my glowing golden pate. Seriously, I walked out of there feeling like a rock star (a little less so after finding a parking ticket on my car, watch out for that, Laurel Heights and all). Not only that, but much to my bf's dismay, the waitress at dinner later that night was totally hitting on me. I can only give credit to the fabulous new hair. read more

This review is for Emy. I haven't loved my hair since my old stylist went MIA... until I met Emy. For months I was straightening my hair with an iron...or pulling it back...and it severely damaged my hair. I went to Emy few weeks ago and she gave me the best cut I've had in years...now my hair is manageable again and I can style it the way I like. Shoes and handbags are disposable..a bad haircut? I was addicted to blonde highlights. I had been getting them for years. My brunette days were in the past - a past that I never thought about or cared to remember. Then, one day, I woke up and realized that I didn't look that spectacular as a blonde and that maybe, just maybe, I would look better with dark hair. It took a couple weeks for me to accept that and then, clutching a picture of my old brunette self, I went to see Mia at Patrick Richards. Mia was amazing. First of all, she was honest. She realized what a big step this was for me and helped me understand what a big change it would be. She showed me a bunch of colors and let me know the pros and cons of each. She gave me her opinion, but stressed that this was a decision that I had to make on my own. I decided to go for it and the results are fantastic. She gave me a darker, redder brown than I had been thinking about and it looks great! I've also gotten a ton of compliments - real ones, not ones that are given with a weird fake voice and wide eyes that really mean 'oh my god, you look crazy and I don't know what to say, so I am just going to say something nice' - believe me, I can tell the difference. 7 weeks and 3 days and this atrocious hair cut still looks horrible. Patrick hacked it so short it looked like a man's haircut. I said "It's awfully . . . short." HE proclaimed: "Well I like it, and I hope you learn to like it too." Seriously? It's completely uneven with short spots then long sports. It's unflattering and totally not what I explained that I wanted. It's a total disaster of a haircut from a very arrogant hair butcher who was clearly bent of doing what HE wanted, not what I wanted or even what would look pretty. $110 for one of the worst hair experiences, ever. read more

All I can say is that I am stopped at least once a week by someone who wants to know where I have my hair cut. Just last week at the SF International Airport United Club a gentleman walked by me and commented, "your hair is awesome..." It is remarkable that after over 20 years of going to Patrick Richards that I am still getting these fabulous responses about my hair. I had a wonderful hairstylist for a while, but after trying to grow out a style and not getting the results I wanted to see from her, I decided it was time for a fresh perspective. After considering several salon/stylist recommendations, I landed on Patrick Richard Salon and booked an appointment with Kevin Carter. I'm a total hair neurotic. I have a lot of thick hair, a combination of wavy and straight. One wrong cut and I have Christmas Tree head. In true Nip/Tuck fashion, I sat in Kevin's chair and he said "tell me what you don't like about your hair". I explained the cut I had been trying to grow out had a 'hole' in it, a scissor-mishap that had never been addressed by my previous stylist. My hair had also grown out in a shape that formed 'parentheses' framing my face. I felt like I had a grown out Carol Brady do. Kevin carefully explained how he planned to fix what ailed me while setting my hair shape up for more growth, and I felt comfortable right away. I left the salon with a terrific cut...no helmet head, Carol Brady was gone, and my hair laid flatter. Yea for me! Excellent color techniques too, by the way. read more

I've been seeing Jay Long for years and he's awesome! I have thick wavy long hair and he knows just how to cut and color it. Many people actually think this is my real hair color and have no idea I have it done - in my opinion that's a real compliment. He also gives me a cut that's easy to manage and grows out well. And he's always willing to blow dry my hair straight which is a chore in itself. So if you've got hard to handle hair he's your man! read more

I was seeing Jay for some years at The Strand, so when he moved to this place, of course, I followed him -- I would have done so if he had moved to Oakland, but luckily, this place is just around the corner. Even better, it's a little more spacious than the Strand, which could get a bit crowded on busy days, and everyone is extremely friendly and relaxed. Some good art too. As for Jay, he's always done a terrific job both cutting and coloring my hair; he is conscientious and patient with me asking him to do the impossible ("can you make my nose look smaller?") and he keeps a cheerful attitude and laughs at my bad jokes even at the end of the day. All of that and a first-class cut and color for quite a bit less than I would pay at a trendy downtown salon. What's not to like? read more

Emy is my new favorite hair stylist! I came to her through a recommendation of a friend and I'm glad I did. I've been bouncing back and forth with different places and I think I'm done searching. It also doesn't hurt that she's right around the corner from my work. Bonus! She knew what to do with my thin Asian hair and how I should blow dry and style it. this is a review for Pasha My hair stylist of many years moved a few years back and I had no idea where I could get my very specific bob cut. I went to see Pasha and she knew exactly what I wanted and leaves me feeling good and very happy. I was botched by another stylist at another salon (a gift card as a gift) and she ruined my bob! Started going to Patrick about 7 months after reading good reviews about the salon, and the fact it is walking distance from my apartment. I am so glad that I decided to go here. While it is not cheap, a good hair cut in the city isn't going to be, Patrick is worth every cent. He even throws in free bang trims in between cuts, normally $5 to $10 elsewhere. He has a fantastic eye for what will be flattering, which is helpful for someone who has no idea what will work, namely myself. I can go in give him an idea of what I am thinking and know I will be happy with the result. The shop is always clean and Patrick's collection of garden gnomes is awesome. All in all, so glad I found Patrick and can't see myself going anywhere else. read more

My hair was in desperate need of a facelift. Or perhaps a hairlift. I could just hear it calling out -- "Help me! Help meeee!" Poor, sad, limp, lifeless hair. My sister and I were in the neighborhood today for an appointment, and afterwards, we found ourselves with time to spare. She says to me, "I really just want to push you into a salon and get them to cut your hair." My locks squealed with delight known only to me ... and possibly to my sister ... as I think she can read the minds of inanimate objects. Anyway, we settled upon Patrick Richard Salon, as it had a lovely little walk-ins sign outside the basement studio. Despite it being the holidays, they managed to fit me in with a lovely (independent) stylist named Kazuko (highly recommended!). She gave my hair exactly what I was hoping for, despite my giving lackluster instructions and just telling her to go to town, and I couldn't be happier! The entire salon has a warm, chatty vibe, and I would recommend it with one reservation -- they don't take credit card. Cash or check only. At least they trust you to run out to the nearest ATM (on California). However, despite losing a star for not taking cards, I'd recommend them. :) read more

Patrick Richards is an excellent hair salon I would recommend to anyone looking for a good quality cut and color. Mr. Richards himself met me at the door with a warm smile, bright green shirt, and just as bright personality! He told me he has had the quaint, rock and roll themed shop for 17 years. I loved his collection of books to look at while I was in the dryer and the art and posters. Music was modern and chill but not too poppy or cheesy like most places. Summer was my colorist today. She was excellent and paid attention to my coloring needs. I requested something subtle that would blend well with the colors I already had and it turned out perfect! She has had 3-4 years of experience with cutting and color. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a new hairstyle or highlight. Haircuts are her specialty and she is a whiz! This place is AWESOME! My brother and sister-in-law told me to go here and see Ernest - as they've known him forever and he's totally one of the fam. He fit me into his sched. right away and is a total genius at his craft. The salon appears small from the outside such that you can barely notice it as you walk by. However, inside, it is totally open, airy, fun, decorated in a comfortably hip way without being pretentious. Their music is a fun eclectic mix, and everyone there seems happy to be there- whether they are working or enjoying a fine cut/color/style. I didn't really know what I was looking for, but Ernest came up with a great idea in seconds. He seated me immediately, explained everything I needed to know about my hair, did a fab cut and style all in just under an hour. He is a very sweet, cool, person. She always gives me a flawless haircut and she likes to take her time which I find is very important. I have very edgy bob hair cut and have to say I am constantly complimented on it. I contemplated exactly how to write this review. First and foremost Patrick is amazing. He is extraordinary with color. Most stylists seem to have their specialty - I believe Patrick's is with color/style. I was extremely pleased after getting my hair colored by him and have an appt. on the books to return. This is where it get's complicated. I decided to try extensions at the salon as well. The whole experience was so traumatic and awful (on a variety of levels) Let's begin here. I go to Patrick. He recommends a stylist - Diana- in the salon for extensions. I meet with her. Our meeting is brief , she see's me with FRESHLY STRAIGHT , BLOWN DRYHAIR. She tells me "ok I know exactly waht type for your hair - I love doing extensions, I will give you a price quote, then you write me a check for full amount so I don't get screwed and we will put them in!" This is where maybe I should have known better. She emailed me the amount due and I wrote the check for the FULL COST - ITS A LOT- A LOT! It was even scary writing the check but as I trusted Patrick, was referred to his salon by someone I know well, I figured this was kosher. A few days later I receive a text message from Diana saying my hair was in. Nothing more, nothing less. I even thought it was a bit unprofessional to text but again let it go. I was so excited for my new lovely locks!! I came in for the appt. we had set up on a Friday late afternoon. This stylist also charges $200/hr for her services. Again quite high but (breathe, breathe) let it go. I was really excited for this and to see how they'd turn out fo rmy wedding in August. Friday April 18th arrives. I arrive at the salon -soo excited! She tells me if I hand the hair to her - it will go faster, etc. We finish EVERYTHING - extensions, shampoo, blowdry, flat iron in a record 2.5 hrs. The thing is I notice as she is applying the hair - the hair is curly, like really kinky curly. Like Darryl Hannah in Splash - dry and in need of major moisture. Before I left for the night Diana flat ironed my hair but it looked even worse - REALLY dry, frizzy, not smooth, just awful. I was so beat as it was 8:30 by this time I went home, kissed my fiance good night and fell asleep. The next day we left for our wedding venue for some pre-planning and I noticed my hair was NOT fabulous, long and lush but dry, frizzed and really curly. We were so busy driving 2 hrs north and wedding planning I couldn't concentrate on styling ideas. Cut to waking up Monday morning back in our apt. and this is when the issue really beagn to set in.,, Holy sh** did I just pay her for this?? It looks awful! Did I just completely and totally get screwed? I call her later Monday and we set up a session for me to come in after work Thursday and "play with styling"." I get to the salon and I tell her I am just not pleased, she told me "well we should have ordered a different type of hair then" I'm thinking to myself you are the professional, you are Ms. Extension Queen you should know what type of hair - I have no clue! The styling session totally blew and I left totally defeated and super sad. We bssically just went over how to scrunch the curls...I also spent more money as I bought "scrunching, curl products" **My hair does have some wave but not the intensity of these ringlets! I didn't even have the option of wearing my hair straight - it looked awful when I did! This last weekend rolled around and I knew I had to discuss how I felt with Diana. I called her up and I said "I am really not happy with this, it's totally wrong, can we reorder and redo?" She said "of course but you will have to repay me" I said "Are you kididng me? - thats insane - nevermind just take them out - I dont want the extensions any longer - this is the absolute worst customer service and you are in a customer service industry!" Why wouldn't she just redo the extensions once she learned how unhappy I was? I A few hrs later I was at the salon having them removed. I had my extensions in for a whopping 7 days. I am so relieved to not have them any longer and I still want extensions - very much so! I have gone on two other consultations and I feel better with these salons. It's a bit scary to be able to trust again but they don't have hourly rates and don't demand full payment from me up front either. The whole experience was a total nightmare. I still believe in Patrick and I believe the rest of his staff may be great as well. I just can't believe I blew that much money away. Life and learn, right? UPDATE 04/29/08 The more I think about this situation and tell other people about it the more enraged I get. Diana clearly took advantage of me and I can't believe I didn't see it. She never showed me the receipt for any of the hair purchased and I definitely believe she pocketed a lot of money from the checks I wrote to her. For the price, I've had better. I have a basic hair cut, long with layers. I wanted two inches off the bottom and I wanted the layers cleaned up, somehow I ended up with four inches off the bottom and the layers basically untouched. I didn't show up with a blurry photo of a complicated hair cut, I asked for a basic trim, a simple request that was ignored. For $110, I should have gotten my way. read more

He always finds a style that's realistic for my hair -- I have come in with pictures of women's hair that's 10x thicker than mine so he always sets expectations and makes sure I get a cut that's going to work for my hair, not someone else's. Two words...DIANA GALLEGOS. She rocks it in every way possible. I have some seriously big, coarse hair...to boot, I have like three colliding cowlicks...bad. I found Diana eight years ago, quite by accident. Desperate to recover from a mid nineties era Jennifer Anistonesque thing, I walked into a salon and took my chances with Diana and got the best haircut of my life! Since then, she has given me nothing but amazing haircuts. She talks me out of the ones that would never work on me, knows when I need a real change and knows when I need "something...mmmm, sexy" After my last haircut, my husband actually called to tell her how hot I looked. Nice. She is a genius with challenging textures...mine is one thing, but I've seen her work absolute magic on a friend who came in with a frizz bomb. I've sent probably 10 people to her...great cuts all around. I read a recent review posted here suggesting all sorts of unsavory things about Diana...DON'T BELIEVE a word. He really, really listens when I talk about what I want and then he gives me his honest opinion about whether it'll work for me. a friend recommended diana when i decided to cut my hair short to prepare for chemotherapy. diana was amazing. She gave me the nicest haircut i've ever had. even though the cut only lasted 3 weeks, it gave me a something positive to look forward to when my hair grew back. diana was incredibly generous and accommodating throughout my entire treatment. she helped me style my wigs and gave me great advice on my goofy hair ideas. although i've only gotten my hair cut by diana, the other stylists there have been really great and it's always a fun trip to the salon. now that my hair has grown back, she continues to give me the cutest cuts. for the first time ever, people stop me on the street to compliment me on my hair and ask where i get it done. anytime i need a trim, i just text her and she always manages to fit me in to her schedule. i would highly recommend diana as a truly talented stylist as well as a wonderful caring person. read more

I would never get my hair cut or colored anywhere else. Whenever I am unsure of where I want to go with my hair, Patrick always has an idea that I immediately fall in love with and he makes it happen. And when I go to Patrick with a specific look in mind, he somehow makes it look even better than I was hoping it would. Patrick knows hair, which is good, because my hair would suck without him. I met him working out at his gym and decided I just liked the guy, and went there because I had hit the wall with the usual suspects, and decided to take a chance.
