I was inspired to write this review after reading the not so good review about Diana,as I had a very different experience with my extensions.I loved them and the whole experience was great.I had cut my hair short and wanted it long again so I went to Diana, the extension Queen!They looked great ,really matched my hair color and type,you couldnt even tell I had extensions in,it was amazing.My hair grew out nicely with them in and is in great condition,so I took them out for now,but I do want them back as my hair is fine without them.It was long ,full and luscious when they where in and looked great.Yes they are expensive but they are a luxury item,my Birthday is coming up I might just have to put them in again for that!!!!!! read more

Mitra is the BEST colorist they have there. She gives the others advice, and they all come to her when they have a challenging case on their hands. She also gives great cuts that grow out beautifully, so if you can't afford to go as often as you'd like, there won't ever be an awkward period. She has amazing vision for potential styles for her clients, and knows exactly how the style will look in its various stages of growth. As for a blow-out, however, I'd go to the chair across from Mitra's to Kazuko. Mitra is not a stylist (self-admittedly), so I schedule my cut and color with Mitra, and then schedule Kazuko immediately following for the finishing touch. read more

Breakdown: Diana excels at taking what you go in wanting and improving on it, for both cuts and up-dos. Mia conquered my fear of colorists stemming from previous bad experiences. Fun decor and atmosphere. Somewhat pricey considering it lacks in other services, but otherwise wonderful. The full story: I found Patrick Richards soon after moving to San Francisco. I was going to a black tie event and needed a killer up-do to go with my vintage couture dress. Thanks to reviews on Yelp and Citysearch, I chose Patrick Richards a block and a half from my flat. Diana took a look at a few pictures I'd printed and listened to what I was looking for (a big, modernized 60's deal) and went to work. She experimented and improvised, and I left with a unique and flattering style that earned me dozens of compliments and looked great in photographs. Ever since, I've been a regular. I've taken Diana pictures of when I liked my hair best over the years, a selection of celebrities with 'dos I covet, or have walked in with nothing but a desire for something new. Every time she's listens to my input (or my complete lack of input, depending on the visit), and every time she absorbs this information while adding her own flair and ideas. As she's come to know my hair and me better, each cut has gotten better and better. Now I still go to her even when I'm going to be in Seattle and could see my old stylist! I've been so happy with Diana that I sent my partner in to have her work on his curls, as he'd been unimpressed with Sproos around the corner. She worked a similar miracle with his hair, giving him a whole new look that has withstood the test of time much better than his previous 'dos. He is now a regular, too. As for color, a discussion with Mia one day got me into her chair on my next visit. I usually color my hair myself or have my mom (who used to own a salon) do it for me when I see her. The few times I've attempted to have it done in a salon I have left very unhappy and feeling like the colorist didn't listen to me, sending me out the door looking like the multitude of Sorority clones I used to see traveling in packs back in college (nothing against the Greeks, but I think ya'll know the look I'm talking about). I'd basically decided having it done in a salon was a big ol' waste of money. Mia knew my concern and spent time talking to me and understanding my fears and what I wanted. The color and highlights turned out great - natural yet flattering and lively. My fear of colorists, or at least of Mia, has subsided, though I've still not taken the plunge to make it a regular expense. Old habits die hard, I guess. The downsides are the price ($100 + tip for up-do, $85 + tip for cut, $125 + tip for color and partial foil). This is pretty typical for the salons I patronize, but, for my money, I miss the convenience of my old full service salon offering facials, spa mani/pedis, massages, and make-up. But, because everyone is so much fun to talk to, they do so well at listening to what I want, the decor is so fun and colorful, the easy breezy atmosphere is so comfortable, and the convenience of its close proximity to my flat, Patrick Richards is now my regular salon in San Francisco. *** One tip: Be sure to have cash on hand. Patrick Richards does not accept credit cards, a surprise which sent me running through the wind and drizzle to the nearest ATM trying desperately not to ruin my new up-do on my first visit. read more

I have been going to Patrick Richards hair salon to see my beloved hair dresser, Mitra , for several years. Patrick Richards is great for three reason: 1) Upon entry there is a wonderful glass bowl that is always full of great candy.( As a candy expert I appreciate flavored tootsie rolls, laffy taffy, dum-dums, and Starburst) 2) They play good music 3)Solid collection of Euro Fashion magazines. The only drawback is the harsh, bright green paint in the bathroom. If you are looking for a new salon give it a try and if you a dog-lover ask for Mitra! read more

I found Patrick in late 2001 after 2 years of wandering aimlessly in search for the "right" SF stylist and have never strayed. We've changed the style and the color in various ways over the years to keep things fresh and different, and I have been pleased with every cut, and thrilled with the color. The salon has great music, and a good vibe - always busy with good energy. Not only do I get a great look, but an enjoyable experience/good chat with Patrick and other customers and stylists. In addition to being pleased with my own cuts (including how well they grow out!!), I have a number of friends who now go to Patrick, because they like my hair too!! If Patrick is out of your price range, I'd certainly recommend Aaron as well - he worked for a couple years as Patrick's assistant and is now out on his own. I've never had my hair cut by him, but based on what I know of him (attentive to detail, patient and thorough) I'd put money on him giving a great cut, and can confirm that his blow drys (yes, I said DRYs) are amazing. read more

I first started going to Kazuko when a friend and a co-worker referred me to her in 2000. She saved me from a hairstyle I hated and I've trusted her ever since. She even drove 30 miles on less than 24 hrs. notice to do my hair for my wedding when the local stylist I hired flaked!! I still drive to the city from the Peninsula to have Kazuko cut my hair. She's done semi-permanent color and highlights for me as well. Her highlights are the BEST - she really understands color and does them so they look very natural when they grow out. Very few stylists seem to be able to give me what I need, and not only did he listen carefully, but he corrected the bad haircut I had, and gave me just what I wanted. If you go to Patrick Richards Salon you definitely have to see David Antony! He is fantastic and I have been seeing him for over 10 years. He does beautiful cuts and color. I had been coloring my brunette hair with blondish highlights for years when I decided to take a break and go back to my natural color. David does such a great job with highlights that you couldn't even tell it was growing out. No big dark line at the top where it is growing out because he does such a good job blending the highlights into your hair. His cuts are also phenomenal too! I'm one who doesn't like to spend much time on my hair. He cuts the best layers!!! I only have to add some product to my hair and because of the layered cut the little bit of natural wave in it looks fantastic. And when it grows out, that is the added bonus. It always grows out beautifully and you don't feel two months later like you already need another cut because it is still looking great. I like to change it up now and then so he has done everything from long layered cuts, shoulder length cuts and short cuts. Sometimes I'm not quite sure what I want to do when I go see him and he always has good ideas and makes me look fabulous before I leave. I started going to David Anthony around 4 years ago after I got a bad hair cut from another hair stylist. I was referred to him by one of my friends who has been seeing David for decades and I had always admired her hair styles throughout the years. He was able to fix the botched hair job and I never had a bad hair cut since. Recently, I decided to go short after having below the shoulder length for few years. I never had so many compliments for my haircut before. David loves his work and he is a true artist. I have fine and thin hair but he made it look very full and chic. He is also great with color. What's not to love about Ernest Stout at Patrick Richards Salon? I followed him from another salon and have been going to him for about 8 years now, even though I have to drive up from the Peninsula to see him. Though I can give him some vague guidelines and a short wish list for my hair, I usually just ask him to do what he thinks is best and I've only been disappointed once - which he immediately fixed! Plus, he is one of the most genuine people I have ever known - always with a non-judgmental ear! I also love that he is quick to giggle at himself and he usually sends me into hysterics with his entertaining stories! I had always wanted a short haircut but whenever I someone chop all of my hair off, I looked terrible. I came to Patrick with short hair that I could live with well enough but then all of a sudden, clip clip, I came out of his salon feeling fabulous, stylish and like I was made to have this short hair!
