Pat's chilli dogs has been a Tucson favorite and staple for years but I'm sadden to report how they have went downhill. They slop the chilli on so buy the time you get it the bun I'd soaked by the chili so when you pick it up it falls apart this is what happened to me on a recent visit so I took my chilli dogs back to the counter and showed her the hotdogs and ask for 2 more done the way I first ordered them asking for just a little chili she said she told the lady who was preparing them I said light chilli so they made them again I walked back to the window to get them before she handed them to me she said she was charging me for them I couldn't believe it that's not good customer service why do I have to pay again for my food they messed up. Standing in line was a bit chaotic. I was not sure what the ordering line and who was waiting. I ordered a mild chili dog. Pat's absolutely rips. It's cheap as heck. The tables are old and covered in weird graffiti. All the food looks wet. I love it there. I had the Big Pat Burger, and it was amazing and perfect. The onion rings were crunchy and wet, perfect ratio. The hot sauce packets are the same color as the ketchup packets, and that leads to exciting moments. I have been here twice now and I'd like everyone to know this is American food. Large quantities, oil heavy, and fried but the food is fine, not great but fine. My issue was the customer service. I had a strange situation and I'm still not sure how it happened. The guy behind the counter wasn't really listening to me when he asked my order. It wasn't even that busy but I sucked it up. Then he heads me my fries and tells me 5.25. I said cool and then he charges me $61.25 but doesn't tell me. His manager just so happens to be walking by and gets mad at him but I still don't know how much he charged me. He hands me $40 back and says he messed up and have a good day. He can't print the receipt. So I go to my car and look at my bank and he was really going to pocket almost $15. I probably won't be going back. For my 500th review, I decided to live a little dangerously (see below) and visit a place that I loved years ago and hadn't visited in quite a while. Pat's has been a Tucson institution for years. I used to live just down the street from it during my swinging 20s, and would treat myself to a chili dog or two at least once a week. They are pretty messy things, and I do recall ruining one or two shirts of mine. But given that they were the only price I paid for that gluttonous habit of mine, it was well worth it. Nowadays you wouldn't find me eating here so much. Chalk it up to being older and needing to eat healthier. But I did happen upon it one fine day, and I can say that it was pretty much the same as I remembered. The hot dogs there are cheap, but filling. I'm not a huge fan of the fries since I find them to be way too greasy for my taste. I prefer ordering a second dog or a grilled cheese sandwich. For what it's worth, I did not ruin my shirt on this visit. Whether it can be considered a sign of progress is debatable. All I know is that this is fine, unpretentious dining. OMG! Somebody take away my car keys! Just ate a few Pat's chili dogs and I want to go back for more! This place is always on my mind but I rarely get a chance to stop in. It's such a treat. Prices are great, you get a whole lot of food for a small price. Don't expect anything fancy, it's just a drive-in place. But that's what's so great about it. Today I decided to try this place with a friend of mine that is a local to Tucson who highly recommended getting the infamous chili dogs. As we arrived there the menu was underneath a large overhang and the line was only a few people long at roughly 2:00 pm when we went. After looking over the menu for a few minutes I decided to order 2 Chili Cheese Dogs (1 with Mild, 1 with Hot Chili), 1 Pat's Big Burger with Chili and Cheese, and 1 Large Fry. I mean words don't describe how good this place is and for how great the prices are for the quantity to quality ratio. The large fry is ridiculously huge and great tasting. I think the chili dog had pretty good flavor, but not necessarily spicy in my opinion. The burger was mediocre, but enjoyable. The one thing I liked the most, was the price. Pat's is a Tucson institution, and has been around since before I was born (that's a long time). It's an old fashion-style drive in - the only part that I don't like is backing out, because you back out, and you're directly in the street. Deserves 0 stars. Today is the is the last time I ever go to Pats Chili Dogs after 40 years. My son has a small bladder and I asked the cashier if they had a bathroom and they said, "there's no bathroom." I knew Tony could not wait any longer so I asked if we could go behind the building, behind a bush anything! And the cashier said very sternly, "I said there's no bathroom." Okay... Well guess what happened 5 min later- you guessed it- Tony couldn't hold it and had an accident. He has extra clothes in his backpack so we covered him up and changed him so he could finish eating. As we were about to leave I told the cashier, "hey I'm sorry but my kid couldn't wait and there is pee on the concrete. He couldn't hold it and I asked if he could go somewhere and you told me no so I'm sorry" I was called the most disrespectful, vulgar names in front of my kids and told to take my kid home to pee- we live in Marana! We literally drive across town to eat there and that's how we were treated. They told us we planned the whole thing bc i had extra clothes from Tony's water day- he had trunks on that were barely dry and told that we should be ashamed of ourselves! Really?!!! I'm from California and my brother in law brought me to PAT'S CHILI HOTDOGS to try it out. I hear it's the best place in the world. I ordered a hotdog with a little chili and cheese and onions. The price is not bad. When I got my order I got my hotdog and cheese and chili ,no onions. When I took my first bite the taste was very bland.So I took another taste to see maybe I was wrong. I could've just copied and pasted Ric E's review. We practically had the same experience. Haven't been here in awhile. We went at the request of my 15 year old son who was craving chili dogs. For starters the girl at the counter was not friendly and seemed irritated by us ??????? They did not give an order # or ask for a name for the order. At one point another person almost took our food. Apparently he ordered the same thing. The burger tasted downright bad and looked like we pulled it out of the trash (see pic) the onion rings were over cooked and oddly tough to chew on. I had 2 out of sheer hunger and left the rest. We finally decided to try Pat's a couple weeks ago because we've heard so many people rave about it. It seems to be an iconic Tucson eatery and only having lived here a few years, we decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Truth be told, we are still very unclear about that. We ordered chili dogs, a bag of fries and a burger. First off, the fries were amazing and if we ever returned, it would be for the fries. That's where the goodness ended. I came here with my husband over a month ago and I actually thought it was ok. Hot dogs and chili were hot. I love me some Pat's! I've been coming here for decades, literally. Tonight we came by because I've been jonesing for some famous chili dogs and it's a very long drive across town now. When we arrived, we immediately went into the dining room and ordered. Normally i take to go but i really wanted to enjoy this meal fresh!! We had a single drink with us and I ordered another for my meal. I was immediately asked to remove the drink because outside drinks were not allowed. I complied and ordered a second drink because it's totally understandable. Looking around for a place to sit was a nightmare. Not because it was busy, but because the dining room was a complete mess. There was paper bags, food, ketchup, jagermeister bottles, and just general trash strewn all across the floor. This looked much worse than it sounds. The tables and chairs were a complete mess. We decided to mention something and took our order to go. The woman behind the counter offered several trivial excuses "we were about to close the dining room", "we've been busy" ( saying this despite there being zero cars or customers when we arrived, i dont mean a couple people or a few, there were ZERO and the workers were standing around talking or counting drawers at 715 pm). I know Charlie takes pride in his business and I think he would be appalled to see it in this condition, I certainly was. It makes a customer curious to know how well the food prep area is cleaned, if the portion of the restaurant visible to the customers is a complete mess. What other areas are being neglected or are the employees cutting corners for, because they are "too busy". For employees willing to care so much about an outside drink being brought in, you would think there could be a few minutes to give some TLC to the condition of the room where people are supposed to eat their food. It's difficult to say I wont be back but it will be some time before i can justify it. read more

The location is really awful. The eating facilities are sad too, with little seating. You might have to eat leaning over the hood of your car. The dogs are cheap Bar-S or Farmer John's type junk. So why four stars? I really like the chili sauce. I buy it in bulk and bring it home and slather it on good quality wieners (not too good though -- Usinger's shouldn't be ruined with hot dog sauce), fresh onions, good buns -- you get it. Here's a tip: They require advanced notice to buy jugs of chili. However, you can order several bowls of chili that are about 8 oz each on the spot, and get the same thing.
