This review is based on an interaction I had with Pat's Garage a couple days ago. I left a desperate message on their voice mail because our Subaru had major issues after arriving in San Francisco from Reno. A local Subaru dealership conducted a diagnostic and came up with issues resulting in nearly $7,000 of proposed repair work! Yikes! Pat's Garage called me back and, after hearing my sad tale, told me which items should be repaired to get us back home and which ones we could hold off on. The price differential was incredible - less than half! He also told me about the policy of dealerships for recommended services versus what garages like theirs would recommend (dealerships typically recommend services at first signs of wear when they could wait a bit longer). While Pat's Garage gets booked up far in advance and could not repair our car, we were impressed that they took the time to give us honest feedback. I called to ask whether this shop could service a 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid. Specifically, I asked if they were familiar with replacing the Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) belt. The person I spoke with said he was not familiar with it but would look into it and call me back. I provided my vehicle's VIN so he could research it. After waiting two weeks without receiving a callback, I decided to take my car to a Kia dealership instead. What a fantastic discovery after trying different service garages around the city for years. I have an older 2011 Subaru Outback that had a few issues to check out, and wasn't happy with the last Subaru specialist garage I went to last year, so decided to give Pat's a whirl as they were one of the few with good Subaru experience. It's a little out of the way for me as I live over in the Richmond district, and it is a little more expensive than some other places I've been, but it is definitely well worth the distance and the price. Very easy to make an appointment (this is such an issue with so many garages around SF), very professional and very detailed estimate/quote system. The service itself was turned around quickly, they found a bunch of things I didn't know about and documented with photos, descriptions of the service all sent by text and email. Had an issue with my car's engine and made an appointment through Pat's Garage website on January 13th with a few date options. I received an email confirmation on January 16th confirming an appointment for January 26th and a note that they may need to keep the car over the weekend which I had no issue with. Given that the car was having engines, I hired a tow truck to pick the car up to take it from my apartment to the shop across the city. I called the shop while the tow truck was on the way to let them know the car would be on its way to their shop shortly. The person on the phone could not find any record of my appointment, could not find any record of my name, mentioned that she had not sent them email and said she did not know who reached out to me. I re-iterated that I made the appointment on January 13th and received a confirmation on January 16th for January 26th. She could not find any record of it and that I could not bring my car there and their earliest appointment was February 8th. I had to cancel the tow truck that I had already paid for and the response from Pat's was "Oh, that's too bad, I'm sorry". read more

I sure am happy that I chose to try Pat's Garage. After having a terrible experience at another SF "Electric & Prius specialist" I didn't really know where to turn but these guys are the absolute best at what they do. Specifically, Forrest took the time to explain every aspect of the repairs done & gave me options to choose for each part. This was a big job that consisted of 3 major repairs to my 2009 Toyota Prius. Forrest gave me a cost estimate & time estimate, better than any shop in the Bay Area. After years of driving in fear of having a random major breakdown, they have restored my peace of mind. I've owned vintage VW bugs, BMWs, Toyota trucks, Hondas, even Vespa scooters. No other garage has gone out of their way like Pat's, to give me the best deal possible, explain every aspect of repairs, do the job quickly, & make me feel 100% secure & happy about the job they have done. Overall I'm disappointed. I have a 15 year old, rarely used car with fewer than 45k miles. My tires are 8 years old and are showing signs of cracking on the walls. The treads are completely fine since I drive so infrequently. After conducting some internet research on my own and learning that the lifespan of tires is 6-10 years, I decided to get them checked out and was prepared to replace them for safety reasons. I spoke to Pat on the phone last week and set up an appointment here today due to the great Yelp reviews, their specialization with Japanese cars, and the first timers $100 deal. I told Pat specifically about my concern with the tires. Beyond the tire issue, it had been awhile since I last got my car checked out so it all made sense, despite the inconvenient location (I live in Russian Hill so it's an hour by bus). They called me at lunch to go over what they found. They said my tires were fine. I challenged them on this and asked them specifically to look at the tire walls, not the treads (it was clear they had just measured the tread depth, which paints a misleading picture). They did that and said that I still should be OK and could get another 1-2 years out of my tires. When I came in to retrieve my car, I brought this up one final time as I wasn't fully satisfied with the analysis (cracking seems pretty serious so I really wanted to be sure). This time, I got conflicting advice from Forrest, who hadn't tended to my vehicle. I asked him to come out to inspect my car and he sided with my original analysis, which is that I should replace the tires. So... I guess I'm back to square one. read more
