This is the fourth time and each time it gets better! I'd give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 on food and 5 out of 5 on service. Overall, a 5 out of 5. The starter we shared was so delicious. Light, refreshing, just really excellent. The fish could have benefited from sitting a little longer so the excess oil would drip off. That would be my only recommendation. The food was pretty mid, but the coffee from the cafe was delicious. I had higher expectations for the food since it had such high ratings. I tried the fish and chips and the pulled pork BBQ sandwich. The fish and chips were mostly batter with barely any fish, and the pulled pork bbq sandwich was cold and bland. The fries that came with the sandwich were also cold while the fries with the fish and chips were hot and soaked in grease. The only upside was that the place is dog friendly. Patty O's is a great, fun stop if you're already in Washington or one of the surrounding towns, although I don't think it's worth making the trip just for this. We've been for the bluegrass brunch twice, and it's a really fun experience- the bluegrass trio is excellent. The main dining room is pretty cozy with a crackling fire, there are a few tables in the "bar lounge" that you can request specifically if you'd like a quieter experience. The service is very friendly but not the quickest- it took us a while to get our drinks and then again to get our entrees, and no one refilled our water the entire time we were seated. Your meal starts with a bread basket- ours had mini banana nut muffins, corn muffins, and cinnamon raisin bread. I really appreciated that they sized the bread basket so that each person got one of each bread. So few places do this! I tried the duet of mimosas, which had one strawberry and one coconut 3-oz pour. They essentially came as bubbly with two separate rose-shaped ice cubes, one was made of strawberry puree and the other was coconut. They were very pretty but the presentation made it kind of difficult to enjoy- you had to wait for the ice to melt to taste them. Another member of our party got the bloody Mary, which was excellent. I had the curried chicken salad croissant as a main, which is a little hard/messy to eat but was very good. It comes with either fries or potato salad, or, for a small upcharge ($3), you could get a small Greek salad as the side. We also had the eggs Benedict and the shrimp and grits. Overall, I'd say the food was good but not amazing, there was nothing that really made it memorable. The bakery itself is a fun stop- there are various pastries, sweets, and breads for sale, there's also a few shelves of packaged treats that would make great gifts/souvenirs (like jams, coffee/cocktail syrups, and the packaged bar snacks from the Inn at Little Washington). Solid choice for chocolate lovers. -Brownie: it's covered in chocolate. To die for. The quality of the cocoa is evident. -Lemon pistachio tarte: a must-try whenever available. Sadly, I too must go against the grain. It hurts me to say that I believe this Cafe' is overrated; hence, the 3 stars. We drove an hour and a half to get there and, in my opinion, it is not worth the drive. I've eaten at their restaurant many years ago and was curious about Patio O's. Yes, the ambiance is wonderful, the staff is well trained, and the tea/coffee service is quite cute, but the food is good--good, not very good or excellent. First of all, it took quite a long time to get our various services. The time in between appetizers, main courses, deserts, and even tea/coffee service was quite slow. I believe others have commented on this. I really hate to say it, I am not trying to be contrary, but the seasonal soup was good, not better than I have had before. Dare I say, not better than a company's boxed soup that is wonderful yet it did taste like "fresh" peppers. Ouch! My Reuben sandwich was okay, not anywhere near the best I have had and small. The potato salad that accompanied it was delicious, not much of it, but very good. The desserts are on the small side for the price ($14/15) and are about $5 more than the same piece from the bakery--I assume the Cafe' overhead costs adds to the price. The chocolate pecan pie was good and presented well. The place was full and hard to get a reservation; I just don't get it. I won't be driving back. read more

What a treat! Patrick O'Connell brings his Michelin star cuisine to this darling and quaint little spot. Classic American dishes with a Southern or even French flair. Loved the Ahi Tartar, Deviled Eggs, Shrimp & Grits and Poached Salmon. The cafe is beautiful and serves up artisanal coffee drinks and beautiful desserts. Came back tonight to Patty O's for a birthday dinner. Did not disappoint! Helpful that it was a school night, so not too many patrons in the restaurant. All top shelf, from the terrific crock of pimento cheese for the appetizer, then a delish asparagus salad. My wife had a wagyu burger, perfectly cooked, I had the roasted half chicken with orzo, also precisely cooked, stayed moist, and lots of flavor. Chocolate mousse to wrap up an excellent birthday dinner. Top notch service by our wonderful waitress as well. The tip is included (service compris) at Patty O's, but we added some extra for her for a great job all around. This is why we like Patty O's for special occasion events. The sister restaurant to Inn at Little Washington does not disappoint. The food, service, and ambiance all match the 3 Michelin star restaurant. My wife and I dined twice in two days during a trip to Shenandoah, once for a late lunch and the other for dinner in June 2024. The food is spectacular. One of the few high-end restaurants where the food is actually good. For appetizers, the French onion soup and swordfish brochette were excellent. For entrees, the red snapper and fish and chips were the best. The snapper was incredibly well-cooked and well-seasoned and would highly recommend. The fish and chips were the best we've had outside of the UK/Ireland. We also had the burger, meatball, and beef bourguignon, also all very good. The restaurant both inside and outside are very nicely decorated and provides a quaint and elegant experience. What sets this restaurant as well as the Inn apart is the service. We brought our 2 month baby, and they were incredibly accommodating with giving us enough space and checking in to see if we needed anything extra. We didn't realize that the restaurant closes from 4-5 between lunch and dinner. During that time, they were having an interview with Patrick O'Connell. We tried to hurry up to leave to not interrupt, but the staff instead insisted we take our time since we were their guests. While the experience at the Inn still tops all, we will always look for an opportunity to return to Patty O's when in the area. read more

This is another one of our bike ride coffee stops for refreshments. It seems like a treat to stop here with its cute and charming entrance and decor. I ordered a cappuccino and chocolate chip cookie. Others got the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie and the Fig and Goat Cheese Cheesecake. They look beautifully created. My cappuccino was good, and I couldn't complain about my cookie. It had two different types of chocolate: darker chocolate chips and milk chocolate discs. It was on the softer side rather than crispy, but had a very slight chew to it. It was too big for me to finish all at once so I shared with a friend and even took some with me on my ride to eat later. I do think it's a steep price for a chocolate chip cookie, especially since it's personally not my favorite type. But I'm happy to pay for it for the occasional experience. Service is friendly. We only went to the bakery section as we were only looking for light refreshments. The bakery section is small with one table with two chairs in front of the counter. Popped in for some pastries to go. The breads in the window looked divine, as did the ones on the shelf. The interior is adorable, albeit a bit narrow by the counter. I got a gingerbread latte along with a lemon bar, a slice of cake, and some bread. I wanted to try one of the loaves but my husband really wanted the focaccia. It's not my favorite type of bread but it looked interesting. It was....weird. I'm not sure exactly what all was on it but it looked like pineapple, pork belly, and a berry of some sort. So, day one at the Inn and the room is not quite ready, so the bride and I head over to Patty O's which is just adjacent to our lodging in the Carter House. We order a few cocktails and after looking at the menu, knowing we were going to dine here later we still ordered the French onion soup. It was delicious. The only draw back would say was the lack of onions? Both the broth and cheese was to die for. The front desk called me to let me know the room was ready, I said I'd be over in a few minutes, and like they had eyes on me, as we paid the bill and looked to leave the desk manager showed up and guided us to our room. Now back the the restaurant. We went back around 7:00 pm for our reservation. The place was fairly full (the restaurant at the main inn is closed on Tuesdays) with both hotel guests and locals from the area. I actually found the pricing (aside from the drinks) to be reasonable. The food was stellar. I started with a white bean and Virginia ham soup. It was delicious! We also had a pimento cheese spread with a flat bread wafer that was also delicious. The service was good, and the servers very friendly. The bartender checked in and it was definitely a team approach to serving. For the main course I had the Long Island duck leg and the better half had the roast pork tenderloin. We both enjoyed every morsel. In true French cuisine, the sauces made it all fantastic. Although my duck was cooked to perfection. At some point we had a quail egg that contained a pudding like palette cleanser. It came nested and almost too good looking to eat. Another delicious item. Finished off with carrot cake. Also I made reservations on the wrong day somehow and they fit us in on Bluegrass Brunch day while we were already on our way (we called to say we were running late but they in fact weren't even expecting us until next Sunday). When we got there, we even got front row seats by the band, Smoking Trout, who were great! we got to chat with them a bit up close. The breads were all great but they stuffed me silly. This was my third time eating here, and I actually drove 1.5 hours from Burke, VA with my sister to celebrate my birthday. I came specifically for the chicken salad on a croissant, so I was really disappointed to find out it's been taken off the menu and is now only served on Sundays. Since it wasn't available, I ordered the shrimp and grits, and I wasn't impressed. I didn't like the grits at all, and the shrimp was just okay. The menu itself felt limited--only about eight items--and nothing else really appealed to me. My sister ordered the bean burger, which she thought sounded interesting, but she didn't like it at all. They automatically add a 20% tip, but we barely saw our server. We ordered iced tea and never received refills until we finally asked at the very end. My sister ordered onion soup that never came before the meal; when the entrées arrived, she just told them to remove it from the check. We also tried the deviled eggs sampler. I didn't care for the Bloody Mary version, but the regular deviled eggs were really good. Our server mentioned we could request all regular ones next time, which was nice. I was very excited to hear about Patty O's. We came an early evening to see about getting dinner after being day all at Blue Ridge Parkway. I called ahead to get on the wait list. The host was great, greeted us and then told us to give him one second to check on the table. When the manager came in he greeted the couple behind us (who came in after us) and didnt recognize us for whatever reason. He gave them our table because the Host said he was sorry and tried to find something asap. We got to our table and ordered our food. The restroom was a disaster. I did tell a worker there but I think it was late by then. Our food came promptly and it was delish, hands out some of the best, but when it came to the check and getting refills the server went MIA several times. When we finally flagged a different server we gave them our card, this server lost the card because we never heard back from them. I tried several times to flag down the manager and to no avail. Finally our server appeared and gave us the check, thats when I lost it and I had to get up and let him know that we had already given our card to someone else because it was taking too long and it was getting dark. If Patty O's were an hour away in the DC area, it would be impossible to get a table. This is a casual restaurant serving dishes designed by a Michelin 3 Star chef, at prices that aren't meaningfully higher than many of the lifeless chain restaurants in the DC suburbs. Lunch and dinner prices are similar, which makes dinner the better value, but both menus are excellent. Nothing on the menu is an afterthought. Every dish, every sandwich, every salad, every dessert, is the chefs interpretation of the superlative version of that dish, whether it's a Greek salad or a corned beef Reuben. And I dare you to find (or make) a better burger Desserts are off the charts. The key lime pie with its hazelnut crust may be the best I've ever had. And it's very rich -- certainly enough for two. I'm not afraid of aggressive seasoning, but it IS a slight issue with some of the dishes. The Champignon Bourguinon, the French onion soup, and the pommes frites have all been a wee bit heavy on the salt. And the excellent Greek salad was a little overdressed. From start to finish, we were treated wonderfully. We were seated at a perfect window table beside a crackling fire, and the ambience of the dining room felt absolutely magical. Our Moscow Mules (served in chilled copper cups) were ice-cold and delicious, the kind of cocktails that set the tone for a special evening. BAKERY REVIEW: My husband and I went around the corner to the bakery entrance at 8am, hoping for breakfast sandwiches before going on a hike. Unfortunately, they do not serve breakfast sandwiches. The bakery offerings were loaves of bread, chocolate/plain croissants, several types of cookies, 3 different muffins (that are cupcake sized), and desserts in the display case. We got a loaf of multi seeded bread, a croissant, a pistachio cookie, and a muffin, which were all delicious. The bakery also has prepackaged nuts and granola and jam for sale. There isn't a lot of space to eat inside the bakery (one table with two chairs and a couple of benches), but you could take your goodies and eat on the patio, where there are plenty of tables and chairs (and blankets!). CAFE REVIEW: The cafe has a very pleasant and upscale kind of atmosphere. There are no reservations accepted, so it's all walk-in. We came back at 11am after our hike and right when the cafe opened. We were seated in comfortable armchairs at the table by the window (which were the best seats in the house). By 12pm, the place was filled up. They serve a complimentary bread basket with whipped butter. My husband ordered the french onion soup. I ordered the curried chicken salad sandwich that came on a croissant, which was extremely messy to eat. My husband ordered the reuben. All of the food was delicious. We left very satisfied. Desserts on the menu cost $12, and most of the items are the same items you see in the bakery display case, but the prices are different because the portion sizes would be different. I ordered the lemon tart from the bakery ($6) to go rather than ordering a larger slice of the tart for $12 inside the cafe. The bakery and cafe are connected, so you can walk through the cafe to get to the bakery to check out the dessert on display if you'd like. After dinner last night, we knew we had to also head to Patty O's for breakfast/lunch the next day. We went earlier in the morning to check out the bakery and we picked up a pear muffin and a chocolate croissant to share. Both things were great. Muffin was moist and the croissant was huge and had a great design on it too. We came back at 11 to have lunch before leaving town. Not many people were in so we got seated immediately. Pretty surprising for a Saturday but people must have been sleeping in or left already. We started off with two mocktails, the Red Bandit and the Angry Daisy Limeade. Both drinks were nice and refreshing. The Red Bandit also came with a bandana and the limeade had a small kick from the jalapeño. We also got a bread basket with some of the bakery offerings. Simple but delicious with the butter and they even refilled it when we finished it. For lunch we ordered the Half Pound Beef Burger and the Shrimp and Grits. Both items came out in about 10 minutes. The burger was very good. A perfect medium rare, great thickness with a toasted buttery bun and not a crazy amount of toppings. Probably one of the best ones i've had in a while. The fries that came with had a great seasoning on it that was sweet and sour and also perfectly crispy. My girlfriend loved her Shrimp and Grits and they did not skimp on shrimp at all. Staff and servers were very friendly and helped us feel taken care of the whole time we were in the cafe. After lunch, we went back to the bakery to buy more stuff to bring back home and to our family. A few desserts, baguettes, and a brioche which were all beautifully done. It's a quaint and tiny main st. Blink and you'll miss it. Patty O's is larger than I would label a cafe but has a cafe size menu while, the bakery is quite tiny with few offerings. We did not, and found scant offerings, that interested my wife or me, on the tiny brunch menu. Of the three offerings my wife would normally eat, 2 had pecans in the ingredients. A plus for me, but a big no for my wife. (Take note if you have nut allergies). We both opted for the classic eggs Benedict. No frills but, a nice dish with a rich and buttery sauce. The cafe is a touch of old class and welcoming. An easy place to relax I'm sure. Sadly, the soup was barely palatable due to the intense brininess. In other words; It was an "asSALT" on my tongue. To put in perspective, my wife complains that I salt everything. So, if I think it's salty......... I have to imagine they use a powdered beef bullion to achieve this. It's lovely that they had a blue grass trio providing live music but, in the small space, it made conversation very difficult to the point that we barely spoke. Which is not our custom. They first tried to seat us within a foot of the band. We would rather leave than suffer that noise. Not because they weren't good. They were quite good. I'm not kidding. A foot from the band. While I was comfortably cool, with temperatures outside reaching 95°, my wife was chilly. Bring a sweater or jacket, just in case. I'd have to say that the highlight of our trip was traveling the back country roads. Always a plus for us. I won't say that we'd never stop in again but, we'd check the menu and ensure there's no live, indoor music. But unlikely we'll return. read more

Loved the setting, cozy ambiance and amazing bakery! Shrimp and grits, French onion soup, Greek salad were all good but heavily salted which confirmed what other reviewers have said. The best treat was dessert. The gluten-free chocolate cookie (brownie?) was totally amazing, we agreed that never has there ever been a better brownie. And the lime tart (with hazelnut crust) and chocolate mousse were truly out of this world. The bakery alone is definitely worth a special trip. read more

We went to a wine bootcamp a few miles up the road this weekend and decided to stop in to the bakery for some treats to bring back home to Northern Virginia. We purchased several items, one of which was a $15 (happy to pay) loaf of raisin bread. When we got home, we began unloading the bag of goodies. The loaf of raisin bread was hard as concrete. No worries, surely when we saw through it it will be nice and soft on the inside. Sadly, it was not soft (fresh) and had very little, if any, taste at all. There is no way that this loaf of bread was fresh baked today! Not sure if we're looking forward to trying out all of the other treats or not. Our coffees were really good, even though they took about 20 minutes to make. read more
