I could not ask for more. The office staff is friendly, helpful, and very caring. They answered my calls and helped with prescriptions and post-op check-ins regularly to see how I was recovering. Dr. Paul Shonnard did total hip replacement and tendon repair for me. I am quite surprised at the minimal scar. And this is hard to believe, I know, but I did not even bruise! At. All. No bruising. He is incredibly talented, answers all questions, takes his time and doesn't leave the room until all your questions and concerns are addressed. I'm two weeks post-op and couldn't be happier with the recovery and again, very minimal scar. Dr. Shonnard is an expert in his field and he earned 100% of my trust. Dr Shonnard just did a partial knee replacement on my right knee. I am 14 days post-surgery, and my pain is almost non-existent! Dr. Shonnard and his staff are the best! I fought him for years for my Arthritic hips for replacements cause I was still in my late 40's. He understood and gave me injections to ease the pain till I was at the point of no Return. Those days arrived, he brought me in and did the first one with 0 Problems and the second one a year later with the same success. Could not recommend a better Hip replacement Doctor in Reno! The man takes his surgery day seriously. No Bullshit. If you want warm and fuzzy he's not the guy. Dr. Shonnard did a hip replacement. He made my leg longer & turned my foot inwards which caused my back to hurt immensely because my gait was off.He was notified by my daughter immediately & he said he would not fix it. After a yr went by he still wouldn't fix it hr referred me to a specialist from SF. I have had 7 surgeries since 2018. NOW i'm told i will have to use s cane for the rest of my life! I have a huge 20" indented scar & he RUINED MY LIFE!!! This would not have happened had he fixed it a day after surgery when notified. He is an ARROGANT man! Do not go to him! ZERO STARS! read more

I had total replacement of my right hip five days ago. I basically was walking Right after surgery.. Best experience ever I am so glad I chose doctor shonnard. I interviewed 5 doctors before I chose him. Dr. Shonnard is thoughtful, well-trained, and talented. He is the only surgeon that I trust with my knee.

He has left ROC I'm very glad he has. Dr Shonnard is a wonderful orthopedic surgeon. After a car accident several years ago, he was the only one to find my source of hip pain and was able to repair it with arthroscopic surgery. Minimal scarring and down time. So when my knee started to cause me great pain last fall I returned to him. But now he is in a nice small office at the south end of town. It's wonderful not to have to deal with the huge corporation that ROC is. Office visits here are on time and very patient oriented. All the staff has been fantastic. My diagnosis was clear and options were explained. Over the next few years I will continue to be in this fabulous office. read more

Not a very good doctor in my case. Better to go to Reno Ortho Center, where doctors work with colleagues who can offer assistance with diagnoses and minimize impact on a patient. I was Shonnard's patient and he needed to refer me to another specialist, but the referral was an arrogant, pedantic horse's ass who ordered multiple extra tests $$$$$$. Needless to say I continued with horrible pain during what became an 8 month detour in treatment because shonnard couldn't simply send me to ROC, I think it's because ROC wouldn't take him as part of the team. By going to ROC I finally received the treatment I needed but the 1.5 year delay in treatment was caused by Shonnard's inability to properly diagnose compounded by his referral to a complete BOOB who was more interested in running tests than solving my hip problems. Save yourself the time delays and go to ROC first. My understanding of his medical community standing is he's a dilettante who believes his own ratings of himself...good with the easy stuff, but medical mysteries are beyond his reach. read more

I had a full hip replacement done by Dr. Shonnard 1 year ago. I am amazed at how well my hip healed, and how quickly I was up and around. Dr. Shonnard explained everything very thoroughly to me, he was very caring and professional. His staff is also excellent and made sure that everything was all lined up. I am so glad I found Dr. Shonnard and would not hesitate to have him do the same surgery on my other hip if I ever have that need. read more

Dr. Shonnard is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. When my daughter was born she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Being in the hospital for 4 days and given all the information I was given, honestly went in one ear and out the other. We took our daughter in for an exam by him and he took the time to explain everything, answered questions gave us best and worse case scenario. Thankful for his time. Dr. Shonnard may be very knowledgeable but has absolutely terrible patient care. He is belittling, rude, and condescending. Unfortunately, I was required to see him due to insurance. His nurse, who has reportedly worked with him for over 20 years, is just as rude. The front desk gals are nice but that's it. Unfortunately, he had someone shadowing him so hopefully she learns how NOT to treat patients. Surgery is a big deal and there are other capable surgeons. If you have ANY other options, go with those. In addition to the potential for being treated like a human, you won't have to see the ridiculous paintings in his office. read more

Dr S came very highly recommended by a few people and my first experience was exceptional. I was impressed with his knowledge and the decided course of action. The requirements were to get an injection ( a requirement of my insurance)and then call the office to schedule surgery as soon as possible due to time restrictions with his schedule. I did all this- when I called to schedule the surgery they claimed I had to see the dr to get the signed order. So I made an appointment. This second appointment was unnerving. He didn't seem to have read my chart or know who I was or what he'd told me at the first appointment. He kept mentioning all the injections I'd had in my back...I haven't ever had an injection in my back. He referred me to a spine specialist even though he has all the x-rays that clearly show a HIP issue. Needless to say, I'm getting a second opinion. read more

Dr. Shonnard repaired my torn labrum and impingement. I have to say that he and his staff are the very best at patient education about procedures before and after. He spent an hour with me the first appt and then I went to an hour class before surgery. I felt cared for and respected by everyone there. A big recommendation for them. Paul Shonnard is very skilled and has replaced both of my hips with great results. My first hip went very well and I was back at my spin class in 8 weeks. My second hip ended up being a little more painful because of muscles tightening but with PT I was back at spin class 4 weeks post op. read more

I saw this doctor as I was having bursitis in my hip. He took X-rays and said my hip was fine but that I was fat and needed bariatric surgery. I had been in discussions with my primary about having that surgery so I wasn't mad about that. At that time though he refused to do anything about my hip. So I asked my primary if they could give me a shot in my outer bursa as that was where it was inflamed. She asked why Dr Shonnard didn't do it. I had no answer so I sent Dr Shonnard an e- mail asking why. Apparently they don't like that. So he calls me in and says you want a shot, I can do that. So I'm expecting a shot in my outer bursa like I explained to the doctor more than once. Well when I got under the scope I could see my entire hip and it dawned on me this was not going into my bursa but my hip. I made them call before I let them proceed. The Shonnard said he thought it was an impingement, ( which was never mentioned once) and they shot me in my hip which had zero effect. I've been told he's a great surgeon and he even operated on my wife, but he's one of those doctors who think they are god and know it all. He does not listen to his patients, nor does he follow up to see how you are doing. I have had bursitis more than a few times so I know what it feels like and what helps. A shot in my bursa could have worked wonders. Instead I am now going to PT twice a week to try and get rid of what my PT said, after an initial examination, " you have bursitis and tendinitis. My advice go to the hip doctor at ROC, I hear he actually listens to his patients. read more

My review is about Paul Shonnard, at Nevada Orthopedics. Can I give less than one star? I went to see Dr. Shonnard about a knee injury and a broken little finger. Dr. Shonnard took x-rays of my knee and finger. He said that the first doctor I had seen put the wrong type of brace on my finger and he changed that to one that he said this one is to big because we do not have the correct on that fits better but if I put a little pad under the tip of my finger it should work fine. To this day my little finger does not close all the way when I make a fist. In addition to this he looked at the x-rays and said that I had arthritis in my knee and that was the problem. I fell hard on my knee and heard it "POP" when I fell on it. I knew that there was more than arthritis being the problem. I had been perfectly fine as far as my knees went even if I did have arthritis I did not know it because I had no problem doing anything basketball, football, bowling, running around with my daughters on the courts my knees did not give me problems. Dr. Shonnard never did an MRI he said I did not need one that it was arthritis and even if it was a torn meniscus or something of that nature he would not operate due to my age, I'm 58 years old, but feel 25. What the big problem is that 3 or 4 years ago I had a tear in my meniscus and It took about 5 months of elevating, rest, ice and massage and electric stimulation to get my knee 100%. I worked hard to get my knee pain free and I was at that point for 3 full years things could not be better. But now my knee is messed up it gives out, I can't bend it, I can't run or jump. I got a second opinion on my knee and that doctor did an MRI and said that I torn the meniscus and had tears in the acl and mcl. He said I needed surgery. This whole mess was a work place injury and the insurance company said I needed a third opinion the 3rd doctor the first thing out of his mouth was "hey you have arthritis in your knees". That seemed kind of fishy he agreed with Dr. Shonnard and of course the insurance company. Basically I feel Dr. Shonard is as another reviewer put it, "Arrogant, egotistical, condescending, & judgmental". He is too smug and full of himself to have an objective and pure diagnosis on a case by case basis. I am still in limbo about my knee but it has been about a year and a half and each day my knee gets worse and worse. read more

Dr Shonnard has moved to Nevada Orthopedics out on Professional Circle. Shaunna gave me a wrong diagnosis that had me going to several specialists before I found out that PT would fix my problem. Dr Shonnard is a great surgeon but has poor response to patient concerns. read more
