Okay, so I went to Buffalo, NY this past weekend to visit my friend and she says that Paula's Donuts is THE place to go for DONUTS. Honestly speaking, their donuts were warm and comforting, not too sweet and it's a cute little place with little booths for people to sit and enjoy their coffee and donuts. There were 4 of us and box stacked with donuts, trying everything.... Here are the list of donuts: Honey glazed, red velvet, key lime, twist, strawberry jam/powder, strawberry shortcake, boston cream, custard cream We had all those and my personal favorites were honey glazed (classic yeast), twist donut and boston cream. They were pretty fresh so warm to eat - which was a double bonus. Boston cream's custard was actually very delicious. Chocolate on the top wasn't the best, but forgivable because of the custard. However, I ABSOLUTELY HATED strawberry jelly inside the donuts. EXTREMELY sweet, looked artificial. I was hoping for homemade jam or jelly inside the donuts, but instead when we cut the donuts to divide into 4s, we got bright red jelly that kind of resembles a watered down jello. Surprisingly, key lime donut's filling was not too sweet. It had a tartness to it like the REAL key lime pies. I wasn't a big fan of red velvet because it was cake donut, not yeast. As I stood in line for the donuts, we saw Paulas Donut kitchen, bustling and busy hand making the donuts. However, as much as I enjoyed the honey glazed, twist donut and boston cream, their jelly donuts were gross and other donuts EXCESSIVELY sweet. I have no argue they are the best donuts place in the area and worth to put on extra mega calories. I love anything with pumpkin- cheesecake, beer, pancake, gnocchi and needless to say, donuts!! However, this pumpkin donut was big disappointment. As all Paula's donuts, it was a fairly fresh, sweet, fluffy and huge donut. That being said, the pumpkin flavor was very lacking and hard to pick out over the very sweet glaze. It was more like their plain frye-cake donut, which is one of my favorites, but added more sugars and dipped in sweet glazes. It would have been better without sugar glazed or just dusted with cinnamon powder. If it was made to be a sugar glazed fry-cake, it would have met the expectation of it. And I do have the authority to tell you this because I am made of donuts. You can get a delicious hand made donut at a great price. I love these donuts. I'm not so much a donut person, but since everyone was raving about this place, I decided to try it out. I had the strawberry shortcake donut and it was darn good! I was a bit apprehensive in trying it since it sounded like it could be on the heavy side with the cream, the strawberries and the jam, but I was wrong! The donut was super soft and the powder made it feel delicate and fluffy!! The cream on the inside was so light and complimented the soft dough. The strawberries and jam were not too sweet-which I appreciated. I literally ate the entire donut in 2 minutes and I'm a pretty slow eater. Everyone in the Buffalo area knows Paula's is among the best for donuts. I had my absolute favorite, jelly with vanilla frosting. Their frosting is thick and actually tastes like vanilla, not just some kind of sugary topping. They are very generous with the filling. I am not sure if it was strawberry or raspberry but it was plentiful, Tangey, sweet and outstanding. I wish I had taken note of the name of the young woman who served us. I'm sure my order was annoying, coffee, milk, six donuts-but three in a bag and 3 on plates. Considering today is National Donut Day, the place was very busy. The young woman took the time to make eye contact and smile, and she did not make my complicated order feel like a burden. She even brought the drinks to the table herself. A+ Paula's. Severely disappointed. Tried Paula's on the recommendation of Buffalonian peers. I'd wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt, so I bought a variety of donuts to try. What a bust. The only one that tasted somewhat alright was the cocount cream donut, and I'm pretty sure that's only because I love anything coconut. The only other donuts I managed to try before gagging (out of the 6 I bought) were the regular glazed (garbage) and chocolate glazed (in the picture). Both were disgusting. All of their donuts taste like STALE FRYING OIL. The donuts are heavy, but DRY and the frosting is gritty. Even the coconut cream had a faint taste of stale oil. Coming from NYC I've had my share of donuts--from light and fluffy to dense and moist. Paula's falls into neither category. Opening the box to take the pic made me nauseous, I bought these donuts yesterday and the smell coming from the box is rancid, despite having stored them properly/as I do with every other donut I buy. Again, I bought 6 in the event that I didn't like a couple of the flavors. I thought about giving the rest away (rather than throwing them out) but I can't in good faith tell my friends to try this nastiness. Save your money and go to Famous Donuts on Main street. Everyone who's anyone has had Paula's donuts. I've always taken a box to go 1/5 times it's not been fresh. The donuts ares pretty big and taste wonderful. I've come at different times of day and I find it really doesn't matter when you come in expect the same great quality of donut. I took one star off because I've never really had great customer service. They rarely smile and are quick to process order that they come off as impatient to me. Otherwise I love getting donuts here. However, if you like coconut (like I do) they can actually do a chocolate donut covered in coconut, and it's absolutely amazing. Just order any customizations such as that ahead of time! A local Buffalo classic! Best in the city! Buffalo is a great city to go to if you want to die by gluttony! The donuts are large enough that one is really all you need but you will want to get at least a dozen just to try them all. I found myself drawn to the peanut coated ones which I normally hate because the peanuts always seem stale and overwhelm the taste of the rest of the donut. Nope, not here! These peanut donuts are the perfect balance and taste undeniably fresh. You can tell they are crushing the peanuts in the back. All of the food is clearly made fresh in house. None of that frozen crap delivered every morning from some central commissary like the big chains. This stuff is FRESH and you can tell in every bite. I also love the white whipped cream filling which they call angel cream. It's almost like a whipped cream mousse, kind of marshmallowy but not overly sweet! I can't describe it but its new addiction. According to what I read at the store they a local family owned place that has been in business since 1996. Not a long time really but they are already the kind of place I hope is around for 100 years. They also have quite a following so if you go at peak coffee/donut times during the day, expect a short wait. The counter is efficient and fast and oh yeah, the coffee is great too! What else can you say, you'd be stupid not to go here. Yes, they are more expensive than every place else but that's because the donuts are so big its like eating a full meal!
