Paula's is a Buffalo staple. Anyone from out of town should visit Paula's while they're here. Their donuts are huge and absolutely delicious. They're actually too big for me sometimes so I chose to get the donut holes. I love the option of the donut holes also because you can have a variety of flavors with one purchase. My favorite is peanut!! After knowing Paula's, having a donut from any where else is disappointing. Paula's also has great breakfast sandwiches, coffee, smoothies, and more. Found this place highlighted on DDD, it was great! They have their own parking lot. Very clean and inviting. Ordered a breakfast sandwich - egg, cheese and bacon on a bagel - delicious! Oh man, my love of donuts goes back for almost 2 decades. I don't care what Tim Hortons or Dunkin Donuts advertise, nothing can beat a fresh donut from a mom&pop type of donut shop. If you ask me if I want to go to Paula's, the answer will always be a resounding YES. They have over a dozen or so different types and flavors/fillings to choose from at a time. From cake donuts to jelly filled to apple fritters. I have yet to find a donut that I did not enjoy. My favorite would their red velvet or regular glazed chocolate donut. The donut holes are super tasty too, I could probably eat a dozen in less than 5 minutes and want more. If you ever drive by, you should stop in to try their donuts. Their selections tend to be limited starting around 7:30 PM, about a hour - hour and a half before closing. I tried their coffee too, it wasn't anything special to write home about. Okay, I'll be upfront, I don't really like donuts. Paula's Donuts take donuts to the next level. It's like comparing a well crafted burger to one from McDonald's and Paula's is the well crafted burger (but it's a donut...). That I can respect. What more can I say about Paula's that I haven't already?? This was my first time (& sadly last since they are closing on 8/18 to relocate) at this location. After eating dinner nearby we wanted a sweet. One friend had never had a Paula's before and my other friend and I warned her that if she hasn't yet opened the door to Paula's to beware. Once you've experienced Paula's, you can never go back! She decided to pass on joining us. Haha! Smart girl with good self control. I on the other hand have already opened the door and have no self control, so bring on the donuts!!! This place was hoppin' for 7pm on a Wednesday! Too bad they're closing. Seemed like several older regulars were hanging out. Where will they go once Paula's leaves?! My friend and I each ordered a sugar jelly donut. I found out that the jelly in the sugar donut is raspberry, whereas the jelly in the powdered donut is strawberry. For a buck each, including tax, we were set. Sat at the counter and bit into our ample jelly filled pillows of delicious. It's so nice that in a world of $8 coffee drinks, $4 cupcakes, and $6 ice cream sundaes you can still pull up to Paula's, hand 'em a dollar bill and receive in return a moment of sugary bliss. I just happened to be in Buffalo today and I knew I had to go to Paula's Donuts after hearing everyone rave about them, even all the way across this side of "the 90". First and foremost, the price is beyond reasonable (paid $2.85 for 3 huge donuts!). Not only that, they are by FAR superior in quality to anything you'll find from any chain donut joint or grocer, and I would definitely stop by here for donuts anytime I was in Buffalo and had the hankering for 'em without question. That said, they aren't without flaw. I happened to get the Coconut Creme, Raised Twist, and Black Forest for my three donuts and with the exception of the Coconut Creme, the other two were totally unbalanced. The Raised Twist donut itself was absolutely glorious, but the glaze on it was so sweet that and overbearing I could feel the cavities coming from a mile away. If they had this unglazed, it'd probably be my favorite by far. They definitely either need to tone down the sugar or leave the donut as it is, because when combined it's arguably inedible from all the sweetness. The Black Forest was a mystery too. When I think "black forest," I think the classic chocolate-cherry combination, yet this was a weird-tasting-raspberry-jelly filled vanilla donut topped with chocolate glaze. Very strange and not at all reflective of the donut's actual name. All in all, I'd say Paula makes a killer donut dough, but how they execute the fillings and toppings appears to be somewhat up in the air! read more

Holy Mother of Crullers, this is the best donut shop in the entire universe!!! This is not a nibble at the desk while you type sort of donut. Paula's Donuts are about the size of a human heart. Probably because it could stop one. As much as I like these donuts, I can only really eat about 3 a year or else I'll feel like I'll die. It's all mental, yes, but it's best to hold back. But, those 3 I eat are heavenly and glorious. They put other donuts to shame. Friendly, fast service. The staff at Paula's is very patient, which is a must have quality when interacting with their customers. What I mean is, looking at all the options of fresh made doughnuts and cinnamon rolls, etc., you may think you know what you are going into the store to get but then you see the wall of sweet goodness, you can't help but take a minute or two pondering which flavors you will take and which you will sadly leave behind. I left with two red velvet, an apple crueler, two Bavarian cream with chocolate frosting, a sugar filled with jelly, and a peanut stick. This place is so well reviewed I didn't think I could have anything to add. That is until superbowl sunday this year. Paula's facebook feed is fairly active, but the week before the game the status update reminding me to get my order in for the football shaped doughnut for the game called to me. And I'm glad it did...the thing was a hit at my superbowl party as it was absurd enough to get a chuckle out of everyone and good enough to compel people to get second helpings. I'm a big guy, so it goes without saying that I like doughnuts. But I had no idea I could have such strong feelings about something as simple as a doughnut. That is, until I had a Paula's doughnut. Really love the Apple fritter and the key lime pie doughnut. I really do not like Paula's. I should say that I'm not originally from Buffalo, though. This is why I prefer ranch. Why I say "soda." How I had never heard of horseradish until moving here. Why I didn't think hot dogs could hold up their own restaurant. The dough in Paula's donuts is so incredibly dense and heavy. You will not find a light or airy donut in this joint. It's like eating a ring of the densest, most dry cake you've ever tasted. The icing on most of them is dry and crunchy. It does not dissolve on your tongue or add to the flavor profile, it's simply an added texture that I don't prefer on my donuts. I've tried the chocolate, red velvet, and peanut butter filled. I was visiting Buffalo from Florida. In my research, I came across this legendary donut shop. I typically judge a donut shop based on its glazed donut. It wasn't the best I've ever had, (which would be at Donut Shoppe in Jacksonville, FL) but satisfying. What would bring me back though, was the cheese donut. Mmm, mm! The donut part was soft and sweet but combined with the creamy cream cheese filling made it memorable. The cherry cake donut was delicious as well. From what I hear I've committed quite a sacrilege. I've lived in Buffalo for 26 years and I've never been to Paula's. So I decided to rectify this terrible oversight. I first walked into Paula's around 10 am on a Wednesday, well past the much mentioned morning rush. I went up to the counter, explained my predicament and asked the woman what kind of donut she recommended for a Paula's virgin. After ridiculing me for only wanting one donut she offered some suggestions, and then so did two or three other people who were around the counter. Based on suggestions and curiosity I went with the Red Velvet donut as I had never seen one before. It was a darn good donut. It tasted like a glorified sour cream glazed (which they also had) which is that taste that is so hard to describe but you always crave. I ate it on my way to work and by the time I arrived I had wished I took the lady's advice and gotten a second donut. As I left the shop on Wednesday she made a comment that I will be back again soon. Well she was right, I couldn't stay away. Two days later I was back to get a dozen to give to the people I work with. Thanks to the Yelp check-in deal I also scored two free donuts for myself. I ended up getting just an assorted dozen of what seemed like popular types. The box had to weigh at least 3 pounds in the end and she couldn't close the lid (so just taped it down gingerly). Everyone raved about the donuts the rest of the day as apparently they were not well versed in Paula's either. As for my two donuts, I went with the Peanut Cream since that was what someone recommended previously as well as the Cheese Donut because, like the red velvet, I had never seen one before. The cheese donut was good, really good. I think they had just come out of the kitchen because it seemed extra gooey and melty. It tasted a lot like when you go to a Krispy Kreme (which I will not be doing anymore now that I know Paula's) and get one of the donuts fresh off the line. Only this one also had a cheese frosting inside. As for the Peanut Cream, that one was hard to finish. But in a good way. It is so big and so rich that if the attempt at cutting it wouldn't produce a terrible mess it would be great for two people to split. It was covered in peanuts, which didn't do a great job of staying adhered when eating, and vanilla frosting on the inside which is where the richness came in. I swear there must have been at least a half cup of frosting in there. I had it for lunch, and went into a bit of a food coma in the afternoon thanks to it. So in the end I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to try Paula's donuts. I'll be the first to admit that I am a huge Tim Hortons nut, but from now on they are regulated to coffee only. Anytime I need donuts, I'm going to Paula's. read more

I have a feeling people might hate me after this review, but I don't think Paula's donuts are anything special. They're pricey for donuts and in my opinion they all taste the same. The red velvet donut tastes like a regular donut with red dye, the chocolate donut tastes like a classic donut, not chocolate, but maybe that's just me. In addition to that, the filled donuts aren't anything special either. The filling is almost too sweet and the donut part isn't that great. The donuts are HUGE though, and I've never met someone who didn't at least like Paula's donuts. They aren't bad, they just aren't anything amazing. I would have to say they're overrated. read more

I have been going to Paula's since they first opened on Kenmore Avenue. The donut quality is the same, for the most part. However, I am shell shocked over the price! To be honest, I have not been to Paula's since last summer because I've been trying to stay away from sweets for health reasons. I don't remember exactly how much they were, but they were definitely under $20 dozen. So, it was quite a shock to stop in there today for a special occasion to treat some out of town guests and find that they are now charging $24 for a dozen donuts! Apparently, they charge an exhorbitant $2 per donut, no matter how many you buy. In the "old days" (like a year ago), donuts would be cheaper the more you bought, but those days are gone. I also was disappointed to find that Paula's donuts have gotten somewhat smaller than they used to be. Hate to say it, but it looks like Paula has gone "big time" and jumped on the "inflation bandwagon" along with everyone else, charging a whole lot more for less. I myself will not be returning anytime soon; perhaps on a yearly visit with the aforementioned out of town guests, at the very most. Not as satisfied as I used to be. read more

Wow! This place is incredible. I had never heard of it until recently too. They have a huge assortment of donuts-they fill powdered donuts with jelly, cream, Bavarian cream, and I think I saw a chocolate filled. They have peanut donuts that are filled too! I had one with cream filling and it was outstanding. I also had a regular chocolate glazed Bavarian cream that was light and almost crisp on the edges. I highly recommend trying the cheese donut though. I had a bite of one and it was probably the best donut ever. It seemed like a yeast sour cream glazed with a warm gooey cream cheese filling. You can also get donut holes, carrot cake and brownies (or so they had the day I went). The place is classic with booths, stools, and a counter you order at. They also have milk, coffee, and I think bagels too. I wish we had more places like this still around here! read more

If I were a policeman, Paula's would be my jam. This Buffalo staple feels like a business straight out of a '70s buddy movie, with prices to match. (They've also got a brand-new store in Clarence, too. Read Alan B's review for the rundown.) Paula's has every kind of donut, from peanut stick to chocolate glazed -- but I have to say that angel-cream-stuffed desserts cited by other Yelpers are most definitely the bomb. They've also got espresso, but the donuts are probably more appropriate substrates for their standard cheap coffee. A testament to how iconic Paula's is: on my last visit, I picked up 50 donut holes from here to bring to an engagement potluck. The party was being held for two ex-pat Buffalonians living in Rochester, and plenty of Nickel City denizens were in attendance. When I walked in with the Paula's box, half of the crowd (the Buffalo half) nodded knowingly and complimented me on my tasteful addition to the table. An hour later, half of them were gone (eaten, presumably, by those same Buffalonians). Not every day you can score hits with a dressed-up crowd by bringing a box of treats that probably cost me like $7, but that's how good these donuts are. The bridal fun doesn't stop there, either: our own Rebecca D is getting a Texas donut instead of a cake for her upcoming wedding. One hundred Buffalocal points for you, Rebecca. The best part? I would rather have a steak or a good chocolate bar over a donut most days, but there is exception to that when we're talking about Paula's donuts. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly and swift. The donuts. THE DONUTS! These donuts are basically small cakes stuffed with more filling than they can hold. Sometimes I think that the fry oil might be a little old but I can usually look past it since the rest of the donut is so tasty. They also participate in the Yelp coupons. I visited Paula's after coming across it on Google. As always I came right to Yelp to see what kind of reviews it got. After seeing not 1 negative comment, we decided that while we were in Buffalo on Saturday afternoon we would get some donuts for lazy Sunday morning. We arrived at Paula's around 6:30 PM to find a long line that surprisingly moved very quickly. After seeing the MASSIVE selection, I was grateful for the line so I could decide what to get. I was called next and proceeded to get a dozen donuts, six donut holes and a fastnacht. The total came to $15. A shock as I pay a lot more for donuts usually! After tasting them today, these are the BEST donuts I have ever had!!!! The Key Lime Pie was especially tasty!!! Please everyone go to Paula's, you wont be disappointed!!!
