Paula's has the best donuts in WNY, hands down. I'm not sure why anyone would even bother with the donuts at Tim Hortons or Dunkin Donuts, as I'm pretty sure they are pre baked and frozen, or at least Tim Hortons are, which I found out when I worked there for a month in my early 20s. The variety is crazy and the size is ridiculous too and totally worth the price. Our good friends had "donettes" or mini donuts, as their wedding favor a few years ago and it was a hit. Perfect for your hangover and morning coffee. A few days ago I had a hankering for a peanut cream donut (one of my faves from there) and was slightly nervous that they would be out at 12pm on a Sunday, but they had a full tray of them and a good assortment of a bunch of other donuts. There was no line either. Tonight my husband surprised me with a half dozen, including two of the cannoli donuts which I have never had before. I'm not normally a fan of powdered donuts but the filling was delicious. I think it would be better with a chocolate frosting instead of powdered donuts. A fun stop on route to Buffalo, Paula's got some great attributes: extended hours, great value and a wide selection of doughnuts. As an example of its selection, if you like peanut as much as me, you'll be happy to hear they have different flavour combinations like peanut butter jelly (raspberry blackberry jelly with peanut butter glaze) and peanut jelly (raspberry apple jelly rolled in peanuts). Having never seen the latter offered elsewhere, I decided to give it a go. Verdict? No regrets! The doughnut was covered in peanuts and gave it a contrasting texture. Loved biting into the crunchy peanuts just to get to the soft dough and squishy jelly. Speaking of jelly, it wasn't quite what I had expected---I was hoping the ingredients would be more discernible, but, not a deal breaker given everything else. Paula's Donuts is a staple donut shop in Buffalo. There are a few locations throughout the city and several cafes also serve their donuts. I once heard a story that there was another famous donut shop in Buffalo. Two of the workers from that shop opened up donut shops once it closed. The two shops that were established were Krispy Kreme's and Paula's Donuts. Paula's offers a large variety of donuts. Everything from a classic glaze to an exciting monthly special. I particularly like the classic glaze and the strawberry shortcake, which may have been a monthly special. In addition to donuts, they offer cheap and tasty breakfast sandwiches. You can order one with just eggs and cheese or with sausage/bacon. You can make it a breakfast deal with a coffee or donut too. They sell hot drinks as well...Sorry, Paula's but it's just an ordinary diner coffee and I am not a fan. However, the pumpkin coffee is tasty. Perhaps the best part about Paula's is their monthly donut special. Each month they invent a new flavor. During the month of November (2019), they were offering a cherry pie donut and it was phenomenal. Rather than stuffing the donut, the cherries were on the top, along with frosting and crumbles. Paula's should consider making this a permanent flavor. If you follow them on social media, then you can keep up with their new flavors. A few months ago, the shop started selling cannoli donuts and all of Buffalo has gone crazy for them. They are only sold on Wednesdays and you must go early in the morning in order to get one...they sell out! Unfortunately, I have not tried one so I cannot comment on their taste. Each day the shop has a discount deal. Again, follow them on social media or go to the shop to see what the deal is. Overall, Paula's is a Buffalo staple and if you're visiting then you must try it. This is the place. The place that converts cake lover donuts to yeast lovers of donuts. Not only that in the order of 6 for the weekend we were in Buffalo my husband ordered the best donuts. The peanut butter bomb (filled) donut was filled with straight peanut butter that tasted like it was ground that morning with no preservatives. It was straight peanuts with a well balanced not too sweet chocolate drizzle and some type of creme. Boy was this a donut I would dream about. And I don't eat filled donuts either. Amazing desserts! A while ago, my cousin had a tower of Paula's donuts at her wedding in lieu of a wedding cake. We loved this idea and the donuts had great texture and flavor. If you have been living in Buffalo and have never heard of Paula's donuts at least once, then something is wrong somewhere. It's the most go to donut shop for the majority of the people in Buffalo. Their donuts are huge and worth every cent spent there. I come here regularly to get my donut fix. I have never tried their coffees or the limited bagel sandwich menu tho. They have many different selections for their donut flavors. Example: They have honey dip, sour cream (I know the name sounds gross but it's really good and it doesn't taste like the actual sour cream), red velvet (super great), chocolate frosted ring with sprinkles and without, chocolate frosted fry cake, some peanut donut, and they also have a bunch with Boston creme filling and many more!! The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because the cashiers always ask what do I want to get the moment I walk - and I don't mean as a disrespectful way. I just like to look around before being pressured to choose right then and there without giving a look. We stopped by after being told this were the best donuts in town. There was a decent line and it took about 10 minutes to get through it. Once up to the counter, I found a few unique flavor options. I went with the toasted coconut and strawberry shortcake donut. The prices were very reasonable. We grabbed an open spot so I could enjoy my donuts. The toasted coconut was pretty good. I enjoyed the custard it was filled with and the toasted coconut coating worked well with the donut. The strawberry shortcake donut was strawberry jam and cream filled. As everyone knows, there a plenty of places to get donuts in Buffalo. Paula's stands out from the rest in terms of fame and notoriety, but I would not say they are the best in Buffalo. They have a great variety, but all that I have tried are very very sweet and could be overwhelming to some people. If you like really sugary icing and fillings, then Paula's may be the spot for you. Paula's Donuts have a dang' good donut. And, I have to say, they have improved over the last couple years. I hadn't been in for a while, and finally enjoyed some Paula's donuts around holiday time. I think they got smaller. And that's a good thing! They used to be epic. Just EPIC. Like softball-sized a-pound-a-piece beasts. Now they're still big, bigger than a Dunkin' or Tim's donut, but reasonably big. And I feel the old mega-tron donuts used to sacrifice some fluffiness for size, but the dialed-down size was soft and doughy, not somewhat dry like before. The fillings are really good stuff too, but still pretty abundant. I could do with a bit less cream, and more sweet airy dough inside instead. I love the white cream and peanut butter cream-filled donuts, but less filling would make them spot-on perfect. Donut Kraze is still my favorite local donut joint. They have all the staples on top of more interesting varieties, plus a slightly better texture and flavors overall. Even so, I'm not going to pass on a Paula's donut. Didn't want to have to give this shop five stars but it deserves them. And why didn't I want to? Well I live in southern Ohio where we have something called 'The Donut Trail' we also have Bill's donuts (number two donut shop in America). We have a love affair with good fried pastries. However we were in area and wanted something sweet. Paula's was packed yet staff was efficient and friendly and line moved fast. We ordered a sample of donuts and pastries. They were all delicious and reasonably priced. It's a great stop if your in the area. read more
