Food is great. Flavors are nice. Ambiance is good, the place is always popping. My beef is with the pricing and the undisclosed 15% service fee when ordering out. Cocktails are mid and over $15 with mostly bourbon selections. If you're going to charge like a cocktail bar in California then I'm expecting something better than mid. First time I called for takeout they made me give my cc# over the phone for 'security reasons' on an order with only two entrees. Did not quote me the price first. Second time I paid for take out is when I noticed the 15% service fee and when I asked about it, staff said 'the manager is already gone' and I was unable to get clarification. It's not COVID anymore, if I'm ordering the out, it's to make dinner more economical. However with this sneaky, and completely undisclosed service fee, I'm taking Paulie's off my rotation. The manager never even called me back when I left my number. That's service right there! Taking my business somewhere else. read more

Came here on 4/3 for the first time. 10/10 experience! From the minute we walked in, hostess complimented my date's appearance and were nice, our waiter was super attentive and quick and, who I'm assuming was the manager came by and asked if there was anything else she could do for us. Service was great. The food was also top notch. The olive oiled bread they serve was super fresh and delicious and I ordered the Rigatini Alla Vodka with chicken which was absolutely fantastic. Prices really aren't that bad either, just slightly more expensive than Olive Garden but the food and service is 20x better. I plan to return here soon read more

My husband and I have been wanting to go here and it did not disappoint! I ordered the Sunday ribbon pasta and he ordered the sausage and pea rigatini. Both were delicious and both tasted fresh. It does not look like a lot of pasta, but both my husband and I could only eat half. The restaurant was beautiful inside and we had a reservation, but they seated us earlier. Also the food came out so fast. We also loved our waiter, she was super attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We will definitely be coming back! read more

Celebrated our 7 yr anniversary here and couldn't have picked a better spot. Our server, Kailey, was amazingly attentive. The food was exquisite. We enjoyed the mussels and stracciatella as an appetizer then had the special and the lobster bow tie pasta. We had such an amazing experience at Paulie's! From start to finish, everything exceeded our expectations. The food was absolutely delicious--we started with the fried cheese curds (so good!), my husband ordered the chicken parm, and I had the lobster bow ties pasta. Every dish was packed with flavor and perfectly prepared. Our waiter, Chris, was phenomenal--attentive, friendly, and really made our night enjoyable. Chef Paul himself even came around to check on tables, which gave it a personal and welcoming touch. The atmosphere is also something special. The inside design makes you feel like you've stepped out of WV and into a big city Italian restaurant. It's modern, unique, and creates the perfect backdrop for a fine dining experience. We couldn't leave without dessert, so we took a slice of tiramisu cheesecake to go--WOW. Rich, creamy, and the perfect sweet ending to the night. On top of it all, the prices were very reasonable for the quality and presentation you get. This is definitely a new go-to spot for us, and I can't recommend it enough! read more

Stopped into Paulie's Fine Italian one evening for a quick espresso and it was excellent. Rich, smooth, and perfectly made -- the kind of espresso that really stands out. I've even tried to recreate it at home since, with little success! Definitely recommend stopping by if you're in Charleston. read more

The Sunday Ribbons are my go-to! Absolutely amazing! Don't forget about the pizzas as well and the delicious desserts. The tiramisu and the shareable cannoli dip are a must! We celebrated my birthday last night at Paulie's. I was surprised by how different the interior looks. It's SO big but very warm and comfortable. Although they were very busy, we were seated immediately. Our waiter was very polite and friendly. The food was spectacular! My brother and I both had the Ossubaku. It was pork and Parmesan risotto and wonderful. My husband had sausage and peas as and really enjoyed it, too. My sister had shrimp and rigatoni and said it was good. We both had a limoncello spritzers and loved it! The waiter said they have prosecco on tap! All in all, it was a very pleasant experience dining at Paulie's. I can't wait to return. read more

This was our first visit to Paulie's. We made the reservation a little over a week prior to our visit as it was the first day with availability during "normal" dinner hours. I suggest making your reservation early to find availability. Every aspect of our experience was amazing from the moment we entered. We were acknowledged & seated immediately. Our server, Claire, was fabulous. She was very attentive but not overbearing & she has a fabulous personality. We ordered the charcuterie dish as an appetizer. For entrees I had the 20 layer lasagna, my husband had rigatini with vodka sauce & he ordered meatballs on the side. My sister-in-law had linguine & meatballs. Both of them were very impressed with the meatballs and said the meatballs tasted just like their mother's. My husband & sister-in-law are half Italian & my husband & I have only eaten at one other restaurant where the meatballs tasted like his mother's & it is on Anna Maria Island. For dessert we had cannoli chips & dip and tiramisu cheesecake. I love the changes that were made within the restaurant as well with respect to the decor & overall ambiance. I would like to see a musician in the bar area like they often did at the prior restaurant; possibly playing some light music/acoustic guitar. Paulie's is certainly a hit and we will definitely be returning. Once again, he has impressed us with his culinary skills with this new venture. Keep up the good work! read more

The lobster & bow ties ($35) had maybe 10 grams of lobster and the sauce had very little lobster sauce so it tasted like bow ties in white sauce with thyme. Very unappetizing. They did comp the meal as I couldn't eat it. My husband's lasagna with arugula salad was delicious. The bread was bland & disappointing. All in all, a mixed experience. read more

The best italian restaurant ever! I've gotten the sunday ribbons every time. This time for apps we tried the cauliflower, it was so good! I was visiting my mother to celebrate her birthday and I made reservations for Paulie's. It was our first time there and we both loved the food and ambiance. The whole staff was welcoming and friendly and our waitress was delightful. Our 20 layer lasagna was the best we'd ever eaten and we probably won't be able to eat anyone else's after having the best at Paulie's. Our appetizer of fried mozzarella with 2 dipping sauces was delicious. The bread pudding was unique and delicious too. Paulie's was a great place to celebrate my mother's birthday. First, very inadequate parking. Had reservation for 2 at 6pm. Arrived 5:50 but not seated till 6:20. Service was slow. One order was pizza and one a veal dish. Pizza came at least 10 minutes before veal. Veal very dry. Left half of it. Very loud. Chef is getting by on his reputation. Much better alternatives. read more

Paulie's Fine Italian draws its inspiration from the chef's experience of Italian Appalachian food in his grandfather's kitchen. That's exactly what you get, food that looks and tastes like it was made in a home kitchen. There's nothing wrong with comfort food but when I heard James Beard Award, fine Italian, and saw the menu prices, I was expecting food that was a little more elevated. Nostalgic epicurean cuisine has become very popular in the fine dining world. This cuisine is about revisiting beloved, classic recipes, but elevated or reimagined. If that's what this restaurant is aiming for, it hasn't quite hit the mark yet. I know they just opened and there are going to be some growing pains in the beginning so I would like to offer a few suggestions: 1. The fried dough off-cuts with the stracciatella were an underwhelming and inconvenient vehicle for the whipped ricotta. Grilling some of the dinner bread would have given more structure. The whipped ricotta was good, the honey drizzle gave it a light sweetness and the pine nuts some crunch and texture. 2. An Italian friend once told me to always order the chicken parm when you are trying an Italian restaurant for the first time. If the pasta is cooked correctly, the marinara is flavorful, and the chicken is tender then the chef knows how to cook Italian food. The chicken was a little dry but I credit that to the wait time of serving our group together. The pasta was cooked properly but the marinara was a disappointment. It was very heavy handed with the pepper and that was the only thing I could taste so that rendered the pasta unappetizing. 3. The service we received was excellent. I would also like to say that whoever wrote the dishes on our takeout boxes had gorgeous penmanship. 4. The atmosphere needs some improving. Having an open kitchen is a great way to engage diners and include them in the culinary experience but the bar/prep area blocked any view of the kitchen so all it offers is a cacophony of loud, jarring noises that was very distracting. When I think of fine dining I think of crisp tablecloths, soft lighting, and subtle music that complements a refined menu and justifies the hefty check that follows the experience. I hope I can try them again in future and have that fine dining experience. read more
