So, we found this gem by accident. We were visiting from Indiana and were on our way to Ope! As we drove past, I noticed a drum set in the window. Mental note...live music! We were at Ope! for a couple of hours. Fun but the music was average and they were super crowded. Hey, let's check out the place we saw with the drums! So, first impressions...really cute and clean and the staff was soooo friendly. We ordered some food and a cocktail. The patty melt was great! And my cocktail was delicious. They called it a Black Russian but it was more like a chocolate martini. Whatever you call it, I had to order a second! The only negative was the band didn't start until 9:30. Great place to grab food, catch live music and if you plan it well, catch a shuttle to an event. When you arrive there is a sign saying to check in with hostess or see bartenders to be seated. We waited several minutes before being able to grab the attention of a bartender. She let us know the hostess stand was across the room, on the other side of the bar. We were seated by the bar and a server came over fairly quickly. Once we ordered, the food came out quickly and was hot/fresh. We had cheese curds that were AMAZING! My burger had the wrong cheese on it but since there is no bad cheese, it was still delish! There was a band that night, they started right on time. We came to eat dinner at Paulie's our 1st night in Wisconsin on Friday the 22nd. This spot is kind of a bar & restaurant both. They've got live music that starts at a certain point later on also. Our server was very friendly and on top of everything. We had to & did try the fish fry, I thought it was good. Fish fry comes in different options of breading/coating, including beer batter, & others. We also ordered a Philly cheesesteak too, that also was good. There's plenty of tables to eat at, and a huge bar top to sit at too. Parking is kind of little on options, so you need to more than likely park on the street. Today I'm reviewing their free shuttle service. Paulie's does run a free shuttle to most concerts and festivals and best of all it is free. You just have to purchase 2 drinks to get a wristband to get on the bus. The drinks do include soda or bottled water, and of course alcoholic drinks. You can even take your drinks to go. There is literally no downside to this. And please remember to tip your drivers. Today we are taking the shuttle to the Pabst Theater to see 3 Dog Night. read more

Stopped in for dinner and drinks before a concert and had a great experience. Our server was attentive and got everything correct. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed the meatball sandwich and would definitely be back to try more off the menu. I love their free shuttle service as it's extra convenient for those outside of downtown to park and not fight traffic. The amount of shuttles helps reduce waiting time as well, both for leaving and coming back. I wasn't super hungry for lunch, but I'm working across the street at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds and it's cold and rainy and I wanted some hot soup. I called in my order for pick up and I ordered a bowl of the clam chowder and on Wednesdays they offer their fish fry for Len as well as Fridays. The fish offers come with three planks. I'm not that hungry so I only asked for one. She was so nice. She said you know it won't come with sides. I said that's fine. The soup and the plan will do me just fine. I am not a tartar sauce fan. Let me tell you something. This is the. Best. Damn. Tartar. I've ever eaten! It is super creamy and dilly with chunks of pickle. So good. And the chowder? Again, holy shit balls! This is a solid bowl of soup. Super creamy and tasty. Giant hunks of red russet potatoes. And not these tiny bits of clam that walk through your soup. Huge! Huge chunks of clam. Disappointing recent visit. A lot can change in a year. The menu has been cut down quite a bit. The boneless wings were mediocre, at best. The sauce tasted like it had been sitting uncovered in a fridge for days or weeks and it picked up other weird flavors. Most garlic sauces I have had tend to be buffalo sauce based but this one was darker like a BBQ sauce. Tried to like it but just couldn't stomach the weird after taste. Also, the fries were overly salted so it was just pretty dreadful. The server offered to take it back to the kitchen but I was nervous about what the replacement would be. The burger was pretty bland and nothing to write home about. We both felt sick after getting home. Just a shame that the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. To add to it, they now charge customers for using a credit card. Cash total vs credit total on the bottom of the bill now. Plus side: Our server was phenomenal! She was helpful, quick to refill our drinks and checked in on us. Unfortunately, will not go back any time soon. read more

A quintessential American corner bar. I had a great burger, simple, but well executed. The side options were fries or chips, tots were an up-charge. I've learned if tots are available we get tots and this was the case here as well. I sat at the bar and service was great and quick. I went to Paulie's because I wanted to go to music bingo and my friend that I was going with is named Paul. The music bingo was great. It was the person's first time running it and they crushed it. It is 7-9pm and free! You can hear the music and it's not too loud. The first 3 rounds are go until someone get a bingo. Winner gets a $10 gift card. The fourth round is they play ~65 songs and if someone get all 25 spots filled out they win $150. It doesn't sound like it happens often. They have 18 beers on tap, including some I haven't tried. Some of the beers seem oddly high priced. I didn't see the price and was surprised at a $9 single IPA. I saw later 4 pack of it is $13. But I guess a $11 6 pack is $6 each at the bar. All the tap beers were from Wisconsin! They also have a bunch of pizzas, burgers, and some apps. They only had one wait person for the whole area. She was working so hard but most tables were full. She came back to us several times though.The food was pretty quick. I remember long ago (few years before remodel), Paulie's was one of the most exceptional bars around. However, things have changed. Bottled beers are expensive, probably the most expensive around the area. Service was slow at the bar top, seemed like I was invisible. Would have ordered food but I didn't dare to wait, as I had the menu for about 10-15 minutes and seemed like "why bother?" Kind of moment. Remodel is nice, even after the few years of age. Paulie's is still good for events of musical acts and shuttling service. But seems like the food service has gone down unfortunately. Holy sh*tballs this place is so good! I ordered delivery and got the breaded cod fish fry with french fries, a side of potato pancakes and an order of honey BBQ wings. When I tell you that everything was spot on, it was spot on! I was yumming out loud! Truly. If you're from Milwaukee you know how a good Friday night fish fry is a really big deal. And, if you're old (er) school Milwaukee you remember Don's Pub which has since closed. For all of my Milwaukee fish fry days Don's was my very favorite fish fry. I was crushed when they closed. Crushed. It has taken me years to find a fish fry as good as Don's and I finally found it today at Paulie's! True story. Paulie's is my new most favorite Milwaukee fish fry. The fish, the breading, the seasoning and the cook of the fish were all spot on. It's been known around Milwaukee that Paulie's makes some really good wings too. So, of course, I had to try them too. OMG. I get it. They were so good! Moist, juicy, flavorful, falling off the bone, perfect amount of sauce. Even the celery in the delivery box was still crunchy crispy as celery should be. I love, love, LOVE this place for so many reasons! It's the best place to catch Milwaukee's bands or to watch sports. But their food is absolutely delicious! I totally understand staffing issues, but we were greeted by the waitress shortly after arriving and got our orders in, recieved our food and beverage and then didn't see her for a hour. NEVER AGAIN will I stop back here because I did some yelp research and found out that they have real potato pancakes so I called to ask what the wait time was for takeout and I was told 70 minutes. I gathered our order and called back and now I'm told an hour and a half for takeout which I thought was crazy but I placed my order. 2 hours later our take out was ready, WTF 2 hours for take so I left. An hour and a half Into our order I was told that the potato pancakes were all sold out, why the fu#k did you even take my order then because that's the whole reason I went over and was willing to wait an hour and a half for takeout. At the two hour mark I walked because it's getting too late for dinner and I was not even getting what I ordered anyway. I wrote my initial Paulie's review more than 5 years ago. I talked about the fact that my boss loved that they played awesome 80's music videos and how it got me out of talking about work at lunch. Today was that same bosses farewell party, held at Paulie's. Fittingly, they were playing a sweet ass Def Leppard vid when I arrived, which made me both happy and sad. Fun spot. They have above average bar food and usually have good entertainment on the weekends. The bartenders are on it, and you are never left waiting long. The table wait staff is hit or miss, you get a super attentive waitress one time the next time she may be to busy talking to one table that other tables get no attention as was or case this last visit. We closed out or bill with her and opened a new tab at the bar and just went and got our own drinks. ( This is my only reason for less than 5 star). Stopped here before an Admirals game. They have a complementary Shuttle to and from all downtown Milwaukee sporting and concert events (which is a big plus if you do t want to pay huge parking fees)! First time trying this establishment, I've heard good things about it, and know that they have live bands during the week. Anyway, my running mates and I started out with some alcohol libations. Not a big beer drinker, but I had the pistachio micro brew which was very creamy and smooth. For an entree I had the Reuben Wrap to get into the St. Patrick's Day spirit! Delicious!!! Came here to try their Prime Rib. Which is what they have on Mondays!! Well I was not disappointed. The prime rib was very moist and had a great flavor to it. You get a generous amount of Au jus on the side along with horseradish sauce. Started with the Nachos and I'd say they were standard bar nachos. The chips had an odd texture, not sure if they were stale. We also ordered the garlic cheese sticks and they were fantastic! Full of cheese and garlic butter served with sauce on the side. A definite must. The cheeseburger was bland and the bacon seemed a little undercooked, I wouldn't recommend the burger. My husband and I returned to Paulie's last night after a several year absence fueled by COVID and small children. We took their shuttle down to the Summerfest grounds for a concert, and have to give props to the driver for navigating an absolute clusterf*** of traffic near the lakefront between the concert and Mexican Fiesta. A two drink minimum is a small price to pay for a safe trip to where we needed to go. Also, I had a headache and the hostess gave me some ibuprofen upon request, which was so incredibly kind and made my night so much better. Wings were delicious as always! One small complaint: crinkle-cut fries (hands down the BEST style of french fry) have been replaced with shoe string variety. read more
