This is a great local dive joint! But note: do not wave the bartender over to take your order...go to the bar and place your order! Rookie mistake! Food is simply a fried culinary delight. The smash burger is amazing especially after cigar and drinks at The Shop. Housemate fries are a must and the tots are great. Can't go wrong with both! Staff is friendly and amazing!

This was my 3rd and 5th stop of a self directed Strawberry Hill pub crawl with a buddy last Saturday evening. The 3rd stop was for drinks, but the awesome vibe and the the smell of the pizza brought me back for the 5th and final stop. Colonial has an old school 50's style neighborhood bar feel, but with hipster energy. Very diverse crowd and packed into this tiny 2 room joint eating great pizza, drinking, playing darts and jamming on some great tunes. Make sure you have your Shazam on, cause your bound to learn some great new tunes or some deep cuts from the 70's. Patrick the bartender was as good as it gets for keeping everyone served and entertained. A hidden jewel of a club, can't wait to return. The pepperoni pizza was awesome too!

This may be the greatest dive bar in America, at least in all of the Midwest and definitely in Kansas.

The space is smallish but they do have bar seating in addition to seating throughout. The service was friendly and the drinks were great. They don't offer food, but they do offer cocktails, beer, wine, and mocktails. I went on a Sunday and they have a special menu called "Almost Monday." It's a smaller, simpler cocktail menu and the prices are very fair compared to other cocktail spots. I tried the Caipirinha (pineapple) and the Negroni sour. Both were good. My favorite between the two was the Negroni. It had a pretty color and wasn't too sour or strong. I'd def recommend it and get it again. Definitely stop in and check out this cute spot in Shawnee.

When you arrive there is parallel parking available outside the bar. When you walk in you'll feel like your bright, vibrant, and feels incredibly welcoming. Also, they have some really fun drinks as well that have been thoughtfully put together. We ended up sitting at the bar and I started with the Reformed Porn Star (vanilla vodka, bronson's tropical milk punch, passion fruit, Prosecco, citric acid and popping boba) which was by far my favorite drink and felt like I could have drank a couple more of these. Second I tried the Neo Cosmo (white rum, strawberry, cacao, coconut, rose hip, lime, bubble) which was good and was a fun drink with an ice cream shaped cup and a bubble on the top (meant to look like an ice cream cone). If you are in the area, this bar is a must try, the bartenders were awesome and took good care of us. Between the creative cocktails, fun atmosphere, unique floral setting, this was a memorable experience I'd definitely return for.

The former Mockingbird (aka The View for us "old-timers") has been reimagined into one of the highest quality tiki bars I have ever experienced. The outdoor patio has been tidied up and the interior is like The Little Mermaid meets Pirates of the Caribbean with New Orleans flair (think hanging lanterns, skulls and a Velvet John Wayne) and you will get the vibe. Roxy was delighful and crafted fabulous drinks and stories. The seasonal menu changes every few months and current highlights include the "Better to Sea You With" and "Chai and Mighty". The "Zombie " was potent and "Morning Wench" with rum creme, spiced rum, black coffee liquor and cinnamon is the BEST "espresso" without espresso martini I have ever had! I'd say no, but don't let that stop you. I like it better here than Kon Tiki and while I'm still really sad over the loss of Tiki Cat (RIP you unicorn gem of a bar), The Blue Palm is divine it's own unique way. I stopped in here for a springtime patio meet up with friends and was not let down. The cocktails are some of the best tiki inspired drinks in town, and they have a great happy hour to boot. That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. Great concept, exceptional service, and truly memorable drinks. Check it out--and be sure to say hello to Diana.

The venue looked perfect, so I reached out to Amanda and booked the event. A few weeks before the brunch, I had questions about flowers and parking. I called Amanda several times and never received a return call. I also texted her and discovered that the phone number listed on the website was not working. At that point, I became concerned and honestly wondered if I had been scammed. Since I live out of town, I asked my sister to stop by the venue. She went there twice. The first time, she spoke with someone at the bar who said Amanda would call me back, but I never heard from her. The second time, my sister was able to speak directly with Amanda, who said she had been very busy and would contact me. Eventually, Amanda called and apologized, but I felt she often spoke over me when I was trying to express my concerns. I found it unprofessional that multiple calls and texts went unanswered and that my sister had to make two trips to the venue before I received a response. A few days before the event, Amanda apologized again and assured me she would make things right. She told me she would be present on the day of the brunch and also mentioned she would reserve a parking space in front of the building for some of our elderly guests since the venue is located on a busy street. On the day of the event, I arrived to find scaffolding in front of the building, which was disappointing and affected the appearance of the venue. When I called Amanda, she informed me that she would not be there after all. The reserved parking space that had been discussed was also not available. The brunch itself went well. We had approximately 35 guests, the drinks were very good, and the staff members who were there worked hard. However, there were only two staff members serving our group, and the overall customer service leading up to the event left much to be desired. As someone planning an important event from out of town, communication and responsiveness are extremely important. While the event itself was successful, I was disappointed by the lack of follow-through, inconsistent communication, and unmet expectations. My hope is that Third Place Lounge improves its customer service so future clients have a smoother and more positive experience.
