Great place to grab a bite. We came in with a large order for 6 people and had our food within 15-20 minutes. You walk into a cute little restaurant that has train decor. Above there's a small train riding the tracks all around the perimeter of the place. At the counter they gave their menu, along with an open kitchen where you can see them cooking your food and frying your fries. The food itself was pretty great. The bread was a white bread that was extremely soft with food flavor. The meat was perfect, tender and juicy. I went with the Katy because it was extra cheese, no veggie. They topped it with extra mozzarella cheese which gave it all the more flavor. I ordered a side of tuxedo fries, which were pretty good- a little soggy since we took the food to go. I just moved back to KC...so my last visit to Chartroose was in 2005. I used to love this place! When back last week and what a change (not in a good way). My wife & I ordered the Super Chief & Zephyr --- and they were ready in 15 seconds! They don't cook fresh anymore. Plus, it barely had any veggies (onions,peppers) - just a lump of lukewarm meat. UGH! Also, they got rid of all the sauce bottles (except Worcestershire & hot sauce). I used to love their horseradish sauce. read more

There isn't a great variety of restaurants that offer cheesesteaks in KC, so Chartroose Caboose is one of the few choices available to get your fix. Maybe if we had more competition in town, Chartroose Caboose would be motivated to provide a better than average product. Unfortunately, there isn't anything special about their offerings. The cheesesteaks are the featured menu item, and they're just OK. The meat is very dry, not really any better than steak-umms that you could cook at home. They could easily offer additional options, such as an Italian Beef sandwich, or a combo with sausage, but they don't. Swing and a miss. The menu includes a few additional burgers and sandwiches, and I recently tried the "hand breaded" pork tenderloin. They may be hand breaded, but if so, they are then frozen and subsequently pulled from the freezer when you order to throw into the fryer. In other words, they aren't made fresh. Another swing and a miss. The tenderloins extend about an inch out from the bun, but they aren't pounded thin like many KC restaurants, and the result is approximately ¼ inch thick with a medium thin breading coating. I can understand how you can get away with a subpar cheesesteak in KC because we're so far from Philadelphia and few people here really know what it should taste like. But an average pork tenderloin in KC is harder to tolerate. The fries are thicker than McDonald's style, but thinner than steak fries, with typical frozen out of a bag fry flavor. They should probably offer some sort of fry seasoning near the topping bar. You'll find both a soda fountain with a few choices of drinks near the condiment bar, plus a cooler with a variety of Fritz's and other brands of bottled drinks and water in a cooler located by the ordering counter. A few arcade size video game machines are somewhat hidden in the back, and they have a couple nice flat screen TVs mounted in the dining area that were showing sports on my recent visits. They have a condiment bar with pickles, onions, cherry peppers, sliced pepperocinis, lettuce, and tomato - but you still have to go to the ordering counter to request ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Why? These are staple items that should be placed front and center on the condiment bar. I also didn't see any cheez-wiz. How can you call yourself a cheesesteak restaurant and not offer cheez-wiz? Maybe they offer it, but if so, then you must have to ask for it the same way you have to ask for ketchup, mustard and mayo, because it certainly isn't obviously available and they never mentioned it when I was ordering. Another swing and a miss for strike three, and we haven't ever gotten to the problem I experienced with my delivery order. I tried Chartroose Caboose's delivery service a few weeks ago and they didn't get my order quite right. My "Zephyr" cheesesteak arrived without mushrooms, and the delivery person told me they had run out. Ever heard of a grocery store? It's really not that hard to run down the street and purchase more mushrooms if you happen to run out. I mean, seriously. I also specifically requested two containers of au jus when I placed the order, but upon inspection discovered they only delivered one. I can say one good thing about this all-round very average restaurant, or at least something good about the restaurant's location - As you exit the building when you're done eating, you can turn left and walk 30 feet down the sidewalk to Peachwave frozen yogurt to order some cheap and delicious dessert. read more

Not crazily busy but me and my bf wanted to try something new so we decided to pop in. i thought it was a franchise but I think it's a mom and pop shop. Everyone that works there is super nice and talks to you with a smile. I got the Roast Beef Sandwich with au jus and it was pretty good, but a little dry. I should've added the cheese! They give you lots of meat but a little too much bread. they have arcades in the back corner and keep the place decently clean. It's obvious they've been open for a while and entering their establishment is just a great feeling of nostalgia. I would definitely try this spot again read more

In a word... awful. Ordered a pork tenderloin sandwich with tuxedo fries whatever the heck those are. I will never know because after waiting a solid 45 minutes then ASKING if tuxedo fries were in the bag and being LIED to that they were..... they weren't. The (plain) fries that I did receive were not even cooked all the way through. Anemic is being kind. This is likely because they gave away my fries to someone who came in after me TWICE! I watched them do it. The breaded pork tenderloin was .... well I threw half away. The breading was that mealy kind of half cooked consistency and NOT edible. This place has improved a lot since the last time I ate here, which was over five years ago so who knows what the intervening years might have been like. Their cheesesteaks are probably the best you can get in Kansas City, and remind me not really of Philly, but of the cheesesteaks you can get at most carry outs in larger cities. They over cooked the meat, undercooked the onions, and stuffed it all in a huge roll that just fills you up. Ever hear of a fresh roll. Maybe something you don't go buy at Costco. I've passed by this place for a while, but today I tried it. I dont know why, but I was expecting a bar. It's not, just a good old sandwich stand, which is what I was looking for. I loved my zephyr combo (philly with onions, mushrooms and cheese). The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and could probably tell it was my first time. Tonight we requested an order through DoorDash. We requested our Dasher not take the drinks that were a required item on an order without an option to opt out. The Dasher communicated this to the restaurant who would not release our food to him in spite of our payment. Our Dasher also communicated that the restaurant was forcing him to fill the drinks at the fountain instead of handling food products themselves. We were on the phone with our Dasher who was at the restaurant and both we and the Dasher communicated concern that during the current health crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic that only the food service workers should be the ones handling any food items and not forcing that requirement on to our Dasher. Our Dasher communicated he was uncomfortable handling any preparation of drinks or taking the drinks as this is not his role. He requested that a worker at the restaurant fill the drinks if they were requiring him to take the drinks we did not want. They refused to prepare the drinks and they refused to provide our delivery person with the food we paid for. Edited to add: Our Dasher attempted to have the person at Chartroose Caboose talk directly with my wife, who was on the phone, and the employee of the restaurant refused to talk to us. Ultimately we cancelled our order at the Dasher's request when there could be no resolution with the restaurant and on our agreement that this restaurant was placing inappropriate requirements on our delivery person for a product we did not even want. We are currently attempting refund of our order We attempted to call the restaurant however no one would answer the phone. We tried calling multiple times and received a voicemail. I really love the Veggie Philly at Chartroose Caboose. It's got the perfect combination of veggies, and it's packed with flavor. It's the only item I've ever ordered at this restaurant, but it's good enough to keep me coming back. What keeps me away, and what gives this place 4 stars instead of 5, is the temperature in the dining room. The past two times I have visited this location, the temperature was in the low 40's and the back door to the dining room was propped open as far as it could go. The first time, I dined in and I kept my heavy coat and hat on-not a pleasant dining experience. This past week, it was 42 degrees outside (and seemingly inside as well) so I got my sandwich to go. I literally stood near the counter (with a coat on) with my knees shaking because it was so cold. This restaurant has an open kitchen, and I understand that the cooks probably get hot behind the line, but I'm not sure driving customers away by opening that back door is a good idea. My wife and I were looking for something different. We'd seen Chartroose Caboose when visiting the fro-yo shop next door, so we thought we'd give them a try. We were not disappointed. I haven't had a Philly before. I've never been into roast beef sandwiches, but I thought I could stretch my pallet a bit. I got a simple Katy, which was just beef and extra cheese. My wife got a Zephyr, which had onions and mushrooms. We both thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches. The meat was flavorful. The fries were pretty good. We got some cheese sauce for dipping. Very nice. The only ding was it was a tad expensive. They do deliver and said they could deliver to our apartment. We struggle to get delivery of anything to our apartment, so since Chartroose Caboose delivers, they'll be on our mind when we want delivery. read more

Sometimes the simpler, the better. Take the Chartroose Caboose in Lenexa. Dining Room is simple and sparsely decorated but it has a powerful railroad theme, that is enjoyable. For Philly type cheese steak sandwiches, this place is near the top. I'm ashamed to admit that I have only had one thing off the menu, but it is so good that I can't bring myself to stray from it when I enter. All sandwiches have railroad inspired names from either long lost trains, railroad companies or cities known along the tracks. The Zephyr is my choice,:mushrooms, onions, beef and cheese. No green peppers.....they don't seem to like me. But you can select from the menu board with a variety of additions. You can also order your sandwich with chicken or turkey substitutions for the same sandwiches. The fries are meaty and the skin-on variety. You can imagine they are healthier for you as you gobble them down. At least that's what I tell myself. A self serve sandwich dressing station contains the lettuce, tomato, pickles, peppers, and a variety of condiments to dress out your sandwich, which I prefer...that way you can use as little or as much as you require. For the small price tag( 7.50 ish), the combo meal is a sandwich, fries and drink. They have Red Creme soda on tap, which is something you can't find everywhere. For those of you who prefer an adults-only quiet dinner experience, you may want to avoid Sunday and Monday nights at this store. Kids eat free with purchase of one sandwich.. Since I'm moving away from Kansas City next month, I thought I'd return to the first restaurant I ever ate at in KC. Since the 9 years I've lived here, it hasn't changed a tiny bit! I love these cheesesteaks... the meat is finely sliced and the bread is always soft and wonderful. I've had cheesesteaks in the motherland of cheesesteaks - Philadelphia. I went to Geno's, I believe, which half of people will tell you is the wrong one to go to - apparently the one across the street is better. Either way, the other half will say I went to the "right one" and I have to say the Chartroose Caboose blows Philly's own cheesesteaks out of the water, in my humble opinion. The only reason I give them only 4 stars is due to the service. It's not bad, but could use improvement, that's for sure. The biggest guilty pleasure about this place - and maybe even any place ever - is the cheese fries. I know I should hate this processed "cheese food", but I just love it. First, I grew up in Philly so I am probably overly critical about cheese steaks.... But in sharing this, I hope it helps the establishment. Bread was horrible! Had better hot dog buns. Cheese steaks demand a harder roll and these were not even close. Meat and cheese soaked through the bun and it became soggy just going across the street. Horrible bread. I ran into California establishments that know better and pull amarosa's bread from Philly, exponentially aiding their California disadvantage. Great place to grab a Philly Cheesesteak. You order, pay and pick-up at the counter. The basic premise is that you have your steak and bread and the various sandwiches available to order are combinations of peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese. You also have the choice of switching the steak in favor of ham or turkey. They also offer some other sandwich items and a kid's menu. I get the Rock Island, which is the steak with peppers, onions and cheese. I like the Cheesesteaks here because they aren't overly greasy/watery and they don't go overboard on the seasonings like Pepperjax. You can get a sandwich combo which includes fries and a drink. They have red cream soda in the fountain machine, which is the balls. If you don't like fries, they do have chips. Not sure on any other sides. I have seen parents sub in applesauce cups on the kid's meals. They also sell custard, but I've never been interested enough to order it. The service isn't anything to write home about, but it works. The guy working the counter when we go in has the personality of a rock. You pretty much only see the other people, and they look about as happy as someone leaning over a a hot griddle for 8 hours a day might be. This place has some hype that has carried it. I dunno what happened to them. About 10 years ago I would have told you to get a Rock Island or Zephr with the peanut oil fries and a shake and you were set. Now the fries are maybe worse than Oreda. They kinda remind me of the crappy fries Hardees started pulling on me in the late 80's. (Hardees now has some fab curly fries though) The shakes are no longer real. Some crappy MickeyDs machine now. The Philly steaks are still decent but they just seem a little less. Maybe the fry and shake situation has clouded my assessment of the Philly Steaks. I dunno I used to love this place. This is a greasy sandwich that passes for a philly cheese steak in Kansas. I have had better philly cheese steaks. Given the better cheese steaks I have had were on the East Coast. No one just really eat a Philly Cheese Steak in Kansas if they have eaten one on the East Coast. Husband likes the Zephyr. I don't really like anything here. You pick the sandwich up and grease dips off and fills your cardboard holder with enough grease to fry the french fries. The fries are ok, usually a little cold, but the are the skin on kind which I like. The train that runs around the top of the place is cute, but cute doesn't taste good. My most recent trip was for the Firehouse sandwich combo with onion rings & a drink - $15. The onion rings were below par but the sandwich was a little light on filling but good. I have to say that I was not blown away by CC. It was an experience that I could have taken or left. The store was one that definitely had seen better days. It was a lot more "moms and pops" than I had expected. The neon sign was buzzing and the TV was fuzzy... They have a video game room with lots of "vintage" video games. I ordered the Chief Philly Cheese Steak. I got jalapenos added to it at no charge. I got the combo with fries and large soda for $10. The fries were good and the sandwich was lackluster. It seemed under seasoned and didn't have much cheese on it. So far this really is a two star review, but I think that the service was outstanding (for a counter service restaurant). They honored a coupon from another CC location and were very helpful with my decision making. When I asked for jalapenos the sandwich was almost completely prepared and they didn't bat an eye.
