I once called them to see if they could squeeze my dog in the next day for a nail trim and gland expression. She had been there a couple of times before and they never told me they had any issues with her, yet while I was on the phone, I heard the owner refer to my dog as a "demon dog" when asking the groomer if he could see my dog the next day. Makes me wonder what they say and do when owners aren't around. They also told me that because she was getting her glands expressed they HAD to bathe her, so what should have cost me maybe $20, ended up costing me $60 and because of the bath they kept her for several hours. Every other groomer I've ever been to offers nail trims and gland expression as a walk-in appointment that takes 10-15 minutes. read more

I went back and forth about posting this, but after having to deal with this mess, I decided I should warn someone else before it happens to them. My sweet girl Sage went here a few months ago and has been before, this was the second time and last. She almost 2 and about 30 pounds, and has never had any issues with groomers until coming here. I took a half day from work to take her and then asked how the groom went when I picked her up and was told it went great...which I then realzied was not the case after leaving her home for few hours after. I came back to her seeming very uncomfortable (wanted me to pick her up constantly and licking her underarms and bottom) then I threalized that the groomer had cut her. I also noticed that they decided to cut her eyelashes which was something no dog should have to go through. This resulted in her having to wear cone for almost 4 days until everything scabbed over. I know my dog and she is very vocal and this should have been communicated to me when picking her up. The best part was, when I called to ask what happened, the owner tried to blame it on me not brushing her out and only offered to give me $25 back from a $95+ groom... Even if a dog is matted (which she wasn't matted anymore than any other doodle would get) that doesn't mean they should come back with cuts on their arms. Quick update: Sage had a groom today (clearly, not here) and after her experience, she is now terrified of the groomer. So thank you for tramatizing my dog :). read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE. We called ahead to book an appointment for our golden doodle puppy and were told to come by "sometime between 8am and 10am." When we arrived, they had no record we had contacted them and held our puppy there for 3 hours. We specifically asked for a wash and a nail trim and for them to NOT cut his hair. They shaved between his eyes and cut one of his nails so low he is bleeding. Absolutely furious. I called the owner to communicate this feedback and she became argumentative on the phone and told me that she already said sorry and couldn't do anything else. read more

I have been taking my bernedoodle to Paws-A-Tively for the past year and it has been a wonderful experience. Amanda, the groomer, is amazing and always makes my pup look beautiful. The best part is that the grooms are consistently great. When I moved from out of state, I gave Amanda instructions from my previous groomer, and she followed them faithfully, but somehow managed to do an even better job! Early on, my pup was more matted than usual (thanks to a newborn at home) and Amanda called me to explain the situation and graciously asked for permission to cut my pup shorter for her well-being. I was worried about how she would look, but when I picked her up, she still looked great. In fact, we ended up making that cut our "usual" because it looked so good. I appreciated how communicative Amanda and Paws-A-Tively were about any changes to the groom from what we had discussed at drop-off. Overall, if you want your doodle to look great without being "poodle-d", Paws-A-Tively is the place to go! read more

My 3-year old dog had a seizure on North Ave right after I picked him up from his grooming appointment at Paws-A-Tively on Feb 13th, 2021. I took him to the vet immediately and got full bloodwork and x-rays done. He has no history of epilepsy, 100% certain he didn't eat anything bad, and the vet thinks it may have been stress-induced. When I called Paws-A-Tively to make sure they hadn't fed him anything or if they saw anything weird, instead of asking how he was, they immediately launched into how he was completely normal during his grooming session and that some dogs get seizures after they get shots at the vet. I told them I went to the vet because he started convulsing in the middle of the street, not to get a scheduled shot. I took my dog to this place for the first time a few months ago after our old groomer left. He was never fond of grooming in general but whenever I picked him up after the session, he would perk up immediately and be ok. When I picked him up for the first time at Paws-A-Tively, he was shaking and wasn't himself for most of the day. I chalked it up to nervousness from being at a new place but I had my concerns. I can't say with 100% certainty that my dog's seizure was caused by mishandling at Paws-A-Tively. I've also read that dogs may sometimes have seizures after grooming sessions because it is a generally stressful period. In understand groomers face a lot of challenges and they do the best they can. But there are now two instances of my dog hating his experience here, the last one leading to an emergency trip to the vet. I have never had this problem with any other groomer in the city and my dog is not usually high strung or nervous. I do not believe that the managers or the groomers meant for this to happen. If they did, then we would have bigger problems than this review. I also believe they generally try to do a good job and the staff were friendly overall. That's why I'm giving them 2 stars in good faith that this was out of the ordinary. However, I will no longer be a customer here. If the owners are reading this review, I would ask for you to critically review your business practices to ensure all dogs have the least stressful time possible while they are in your care. read more

Our dog actually LIKES going to Paws-A-Tively...she's not a dog who likes these kinds of things. She seriously starts running TOWARD the door when she realizes that's where we're goinG. She comes out clean, half her prior fur-ball size, and (best of all) smiley-happy. She's so proud on our walk home! Imagine saying 'dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink' fast, in a kind of high-voice. That's the sound it feels like she's making with each confident step. (Please visualize a 19-pound Cock-A-Poo making this sound. Your shepherd or Burmese Mountain Dog probably makes a very different imagined walking sound.) Regardless: Looking good...feeling good! The folks in the shop will dote more on your dog than on you. They may seem a bit aloof (charmingly so, mostly), and may even take several years to remember YOUR name. That's okay. They've got this. Pricing is fair. Not cheap but sane compared to most nearby alternatives. The increase over the past few years has mostly been in scheduling times more than price. Pre-pandemic, you could often show up early without an appointment and get in. For now, plan on booking at least a couple of weeks or more ahead. Summary: When the puppy is happy (and smells nice), everyone's happy! We wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

We are so happy we found such a great place to take our dog! We moved here from St. Louis and were dreading trying to find a place for our dog. We are a bit overprotective of our 8lb Chi/Pom mix. I had my two dogs groomed here for the first time today. I'm very happy with the results. My 60 lb. husky mix had a bath, extra brushing (she sheds), toenails trimmed, teeth brushed (extra $5, worth it). My 30 lb. Border Collie mix had a bath, extensive trim, toenails, teeth, and a bow! $145 for both dogs in line with what I was told to expect. I was excited to learn about this place right down the street as my dachshund needs his nails clipped bi-weekly. We went in for the first time and I had to carry him and hold him in the back (which is fine, I've just never had to do that before). The woman who cut his nails did a fine job until she got the quick of one pretty bad that it started gushing blood all over my hand AND coat. My dog didn't yelp so it seemed she didn't notice but when I pointed it out she covered it with some powder, said he'd be fine and wiped my hand off with a dirty paper towel dipped in her water cup. My dog will be fine and they didn't charge me but everything felt very unsanitary, it was also the woman up front who apologized and didn't charge me, the technician just sent me on my way. **As a follow up, my dog licked his wound where they powdered it with stuff to stop the bleeding and he has been constantly vomiting bile for the last 3 hours, superb.** read more

I went in by recommendation of a friend and I have never regretted a decision more. My dog, who has had a great track record at the groomers, was noticeably docile and acting strange after I picked him up. I quickly realized that only his back legs were trimmed and nothing else, even though I had explicitly asked for a full trim. And when I had gone in to check my dog, the staff was very dismissive and promptly called me 10 minutes after I left to let me know my dog had already been groomed which proved to show they did not take the time they needed to do their job correctly. His nails were cut too close to the edge and had some blood. I called in to voice my complaints and concerns and was quickly dismissed as well. Not only that, the owner continuously referred to my male dog as a "she", which proved my point further that they did not even look at him correctly enough to know he was a boy, not a girl. Which only speaks further to their negligence. When I asked for a refund for these poor services, I was not heard out and furthermore, the owner continued to call me the wrong name as well. I would not recommend this business at all - you are better off at April at the Ritz which is further down LaSalle. So incredibly disappointed and your furry babies deserve better, I know full well mine did. read more

The guy I spoke to looked up who groomed him and said she wasn't very good (duh) then said he shouldn't have said that, but could have the better one fix it. I'm a long-time client of Paws-A-Tively. The groomers are much more than "people who cut dogs' hair." They are not only talented but also kind and loving to all the dogs. I had taken my dog Lucky there for many years and when she passed away, they sent me a condolence card that each of them signed with a lovely message. Almost a year later, I have rescued another dog, and though she is a senior with serious health issues, I had no concerns about taking here. The owner Lana assured me that they would take special care of Holly and they did. I loved that the bandana that she wore home from her grooming had a rainbow on it for Pride month. Let me start by stating three dogs from our family have been going to Paws-a-tively for some years & we as a family have never ever complained or asked or looked for anything free or otherwise. Therefore, this BAD REVIEW is a FIRST FROM ME. But NEVER AGAIN. Within the past 4 mths we 've had an incident with every grooming. Razor burns all over the my daughter's yorkie mix even on the inside of his ears not once but twice where he was 'couch bound' with sores for over a week. When we mentioned to the groomer about the razor burns we were offered a Free Grooming which we DECLINED & never even thought about getting a 'freebie' that was not the intention. Then just this wk yet another incident, our yorkie mix had her nail cut/ripped off which they never mentioned about when she was picked up by my husband in our car, driven from groomers to our home. We only noticed when we put her down in our home she was limping & crying periodically. We just thought perhaps her nails were cut a little too short, fine, but not the case. When she didn't stop crying & limping after three days [over the wkend] we took her to our vet of 20 years & $390.61 later where he told us her whole nail was ripped off, bone & nerves were exposed, hence causing the pain. We could not see bone/nerves etc., ourselves as the blood had hardened & matted into her fur. She was put under & our vet did what needed to be done. The following day, husband went to the Groomers, with the vets bill & asked why they had not informed him when picking Oliver up as to what had occurred. Before he even got to say above the owner proceeded to write him a check to cover expenses [thank you] she didn't even ask what had happened & indeed if anything had happened it had not occured at her store. Its as if she was waiting for him to show up one day. Now, why, I ask myself would she not inquire why we had to take Oliver to the vet etc., The issue since then. We've have had several phone calls from Pasw-a-tively telling us they had NOTHING to do with Olivers wound & probably happened when she jumped off the couch at home or something & also had the gall to say Alfies razor burns which happened TWICE was due to his coat being matted. He looks like a Yorkie, wired haired, no matting. They also called our vet of 20yrs or more & told us our Vet said Oliver DID NOT GET HURT AT THEIR STORE. As I type this review, our vet is in surgery so we are unable to speak to him till later this evening. I AM FURIOUS & DISGUSTED. We have been loyal patrons of PAWS-A-TIVELY for some years & to be treated and LIED TO is beyond comprehension. CLASSLESS, TASTLESS & certainly LACK OF BUSINESS ETHICS. I gave Paws-a-tively a try after a bad experience with a place on Wells St. I've now been bringing my dog here for a couple years and have been very pleased with their grooming services. It's not a fancy place, but they have a nice small selection of merchandise and the staff has always been gentle and friendly with my dog. His first time there, they gave me a little gift basket with treats for both of us which I thought was a nice touch (they also do that when I bring him in around the holidays in December). I've never had a problem getting an appointment, even on Saturdays--I always make them in advance, but they've told me they can usually sneak in a last-minute grooming if necessary. Tip: I'm bad at describing how I like my dog's hair cut, so I gave them a picture that they keep on file. It makes it much easier when I don't have to worry about explaining anything when I drop him off. read more

Having a rescue that was abused presents some challenges. Finding a groomer who is good, but also gentle and loving is one of them! We found our spot though here. The staff is always so warm and sweet. They take very good care of the dogs and it's obvious they truly are animal lovers. I just moved into the neighborhood and a resident recommended this place to get my dog groomed. The staff is super friendly however tried to charge me more than what was agreed upon over the phone. When I asked, they simply said, "oh, I just pulled a number out of the air without checking the chart." Very sketchy if you ask me.. The service was fairly quick. About an hour and a half for a wash and blow dry. However, I noticed my dogs ears were not cleaned so I called back and the response was not apologetic and not solution oriented, just a "what makes you think that?"
