Dr. Howard was wonderful. She handled the euthanasia in a humane and professional manner. She explained every step and was considerate of how difficult it was for us. She did not rush through and was gentle with our cat and with us. Paws at Peace offers some extras (a paw print and a bit of fur in a little jar) in addition to cremation options. I initially thought these things were silly but I am glad we got them. It was easy to make the arrangements. We called at 8 AM and got a same day appointment. We got a text of the expected time and an update when there was a very slight delay. We got a follow up text the next day, with an offer for grief support. This is a well run organization. They know what they are doing. Best of all, they did not cause any additional grief to what was already a very sad day. read more

Although we've lost a couple of dogs over the years, this was our first experience with at-home euthanasia, and I'm sad but pleased to say it was a good one. The most peaceful and stress free experience. In my previous career I was a ER/CC vet tech for 20 years so naturally I've seen so many humane euthanasias. I've also had to make the difficult decision of euthanizing many of my own pets. I always thought my facility did a great job providing care and comfort to grieving pet owners and their dying pets but my experience with Paws at Peace made me realize that we were so severely lacking. It was the most peaceful and beautiful experience I had regarding end of life. I was not a wreck for weeks after unable to eat or go to work. I was at so much peace knowing my Sheldon was taken such good care of. Everyone in this facility that I interacted with were so empathetic and compassionate. When the time came for our little dog Sophie to be sent on, Paws at Peace responded on very short notice, came to our home, was very respectful of our feelings, and treated us and Sophie with dignity. Dr Alexis Review: She came up in scrubs and a mask which I was a little surprised to see. She also was carrying a cart. I told her we wouldn't need the cart as my husband would carry Oskar down the stairs. I also wanted to eliminate any anxiety for Oskar. She brought the cart in. I introduced myself and my husband and she said hi but did not give us her name. I then asked her if she minded taking her shoes off because we have two young children. She put booties on, which was fine. I offered to let her sit down. She instead came into the living room with us and knelt down by Oskar who was enjoying a bone. She did not pet him or engage with him. She went over the process nicely and we didn't have any questions. We refused the paw print and the fur. The first shot was administered and everything went nicely. Dr Alexis was preparing the second shot while we stayed by Oskar. She returned after about 7 minutes and I asked for 3 more minutes. I then nodded to her and she came over for the second shot. She moved his leg under his body and I did ask why she needed that vein (Oskar had 4 shaved legs). She said it was easiest to use the vein under him. I was fine with it. She moved his head so she could get better access and his nose was now right by his paw. She poured alcohol on his leg verses using a sterile cloth or cotton pad which I found odd. I tried to cover his nose so the alcohol wouldn't get in his nose which a little did and on his bed so everything smelled like rubbing alcohol. She was having a hard time finding the vein so I moved to give her better access. She found the vein and started administering the shot and the top popped off and the pentobarbital spilled on the floor next to Oskar's bed. She didn't say anything or acknowledge the spill. She then checked Oskar's heart and said he passed. I then asked my husband to help clean up the spill. We also wanted to know if he needed more of the anesthetic. She said he got 4 and usually dogs got 6. So we asked her to administer a little more. Then she silently got up and came back covering his abdomen and tried hiding a shot under him. I asked her what she was doing and she said she had to administer the shot into his heart. The second shot then broke and spilled pentobarbital all over Oskar and his bed. I did ask about the anesthetic as I have a 10 month old and a 4 year old that are all over the floor. I am also breastfeeding and didn't know if the fumes were an issue. She said it's probably fine. I asked her to change her gloves because if she was using out trash I didn't want it to get on the trash pull that we all touch. She then came back to adjust to Oskar and I had to ask again for some time to say goodbye. She said very little the whole time. She came in cool and on auto pilot and she did not bring the energy we were hoping for. We hoped instead of asking questions she would be confident and tell us the steps she was taking. Giving us guidance and advice through the process. She never apologized and she remained distant and cool. When I showed concern the receptionist was very warm and kind. The owner called me back and I heard " a little bit of the fluids spilled and you had some questions." We went over the experience and she said she will talk to the Dr and this was a learning experience. We did not sign up for our dogs last moment to be a learning experience. I have reached out to different groups such as park slope Moms ect and everyone is validating that this experience was not well handled and those that shared said they had better experiences. They shared that a doctor shouldn't be "nervous" and on the "verge of tears". You guys get wonderful reviews and I felt confident going into this. Again your receptionist couldn't have been kinder or more warm. I heard Dr. Howard is new and I do not think her bedside manner or commucninatin are what others or ourselves should have been given. Oskar was a special dog and did not deserve a learning curve but respect and a calm and confident medical professional. I am deeply saddened by our experience. read more

Our Tony was diagnosed with lymphoma at the end of 2023. In december we started him on chemo and also had a section of his colon removed. At first he was doing great. He was like a kitten again but at the end of April '24 he started stumbling and seemed very weak. We rushed him to the hospital but even though they were hopeful, his rear legs were paralyzed and he started to pee blood. Instead of in a cold office, we wanted to euthanize him in his home that he loved with the people that loved him. A friend recommended Paws At Peace and we are so happy they did. They were so kind. How do you make such a horrible moment that much easier? We know at some point that our girl was suffering too much but we Didn't wanna put her through the trauma of bringing car to a big white room with a bunch of strangers and a stainless steel table instead, she crossed the rainbow bridge into heaven right in her own home. The vet was on time for her appointment and as she came in the house, we already had a feeling of peace. She went to where the cat was as opposed to us bringing the cat to her. Right to our cat's very own bed. I guess to die in one's bed is the way that any one of us may want to go. The vet came in and was very sweet to our pet cat, started feeding her her last meal treats and administered the medicine. She peacefully went to sleep, right where she usually sleeps. I could not recommend Paws at Peace more. I wish there was more than five stars to give because I would give 100. 7 months ago we lost our cat Lady. To us this was not just a cat. She was my soulmate and we were losing her young. The visit did not go as well as I thought it would. Mind you the Vet was kind and polite but too many things went ways I thought they shouldn't have. I didn't say anything. This loss crushed us and I knew that it wasn't the time or place to complain. Something came up that upset me and I emailed the company. The next day I got a phone call from Dr. Jennifer who is the owner of this company. I cannot tell you how surprised I was by her reaction. I could hear in her voice that she was extremely upset that things went this way. It made me realize that she really cares. This wasn't some businessperson I was talking to. The phone call really helped heal me. Dr. Jennifer and her team are clearly doing amazing work. We have all had new employees who are great but might be a little green or nervous. I understood why things went the way they did and I realized that maybe I could have done more as well to make it a better visit but after saying to myself never again I now will strictly go to paws at peace in the future for any needs of this sort. Her voice and tone told me all I needed to know. As someone who has dealt with a lot of people under stress or pressure it was clear to me she cares deeply. This is a wonderful company. Not everything always goes 100 percent but I am wise enough to realize that this place comes pretty close even though there were some issues with my experience.
