Jumbo Chopped Pork Sandwich with Baked Beans.
    Richard C.

Payne's is a bit of a sleeper in the BBQ rich city of Memphis. Payne's is a family owned, no frills BBQ joint that you should visit. I love the medium sauce with the tangy mustard-based coleslaw, which creates a unique taste.

I love Payne's! If you're are thinking of some Memphis BBQ, please do yourself a favor and come grab a bite here! Their pulled pork sandwich is mouthwatering. The baked beans are just as savory. This is just a quintessential spot; family owned, very friendly, down-to-earth folks. As a tourist, I was impressed. Plus, they've been featured on the Food Network, how can you go wrong? Keep their hours in mind as they are only open for lunch time Tues-Sat. Would definitely come back!

Mustard slaw, beef ribs and bologna sandwich. All tasty in their own right. Beef ribs crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. Very simple and basic place inside.

Listen - I've never had service this fast at a barbecue joint! They chopped up the ribs as we ordered, and everything was steaming hot. I wasn't amazed by the flavor of the meat, but the baked beans were something special. I definitely want to go back to try the hot dog and chopped sandwich, because I saw others order them and they looked incredible!

Oh my goodness; I rarely eat BBQ pork sandwiches . They don't sell bbq beef sandwiches and my sister convinced me to try Payne's bbq pork. Let me tell you I was not disappointed. I ordered the jumbo bbq sandwich plate. The bun was toasted and very crispy. The meat was enough for my large bun and two more small sandwiches I made at home. The beans and slaw were delicious, fantastic and very favorable. The customer service was exceptional and everyone was very friendly. I decided to eat there and the atmosphere was great with the old style restaurant vibe (old tables with checkered plastic tablecloths). Whenever you want some pork bbq and the most delicious bbq smoked sausage then Payne's is the place. Don't let the neighborhood deter you because some of the best food is sold in this area.

EXTRAORDINARY BBQ Ron Payne, Owner of Payne's Bar-B-Q with his mother Flora and sister Candice, a family restaurant operating since 1972 their father Horton. Payne's is a restaurant that feels like a step back in time Ron told me, "We like to keep it mom-and-pop old school, and we think the ambience gives Payne's a little extra flavor. We really try to focus on the product, not so much on what the building looks like". Their biggest seller and one of the best I've ever tasted is their Chopped Pork Shoulder Sandwich! The Pork shoulders are turned over hickory coals, in a recessed pit set into the wall. They cook it slow and low over the charcoal for a whole day, so it's tender and has a good, smoky taste. The smokier, the better. We don't put any seasoning on it. Pork is a wonderful thing. It has its own flavor. You don't have to do much to it. The pork shoulders are still turned over hickory coals, in a recessed pit set into the wall. The mild sauce simmers all afternoon on the stove. The hotter variety is dispensed via an old liquid soap bottle. Coleslaw is the color of day-glo green (mustard-infused), its bright hue energetically sizzles between the meat and bun of a chopped pork sandwich.

Take a chance, get over the decor (or lack thereof) and location, bring some cash, and enjoy what real Memphis BBQ is.

I ultimately initially wanted to come for the experience and the ribs, but I got so much more. The live music was so entertaining. I really enjoyed my ribs, mac & cheese, and beans and my two cocktails were refreshing as well. Them ribs just completely fell off the bone and were so tender that you could eat them with a fork. The mac & cheese was seasoned and so creamy and I now understand why the waiter recommended that I order it as a replacement for the coleslaw because I hate coleslaw. The staff was really great. However, my friend ended up ordering a sausage and cheese platter from them for an event we were attending and I was assigned pick-up duty. Since it was lunch time I went ahead and ordered from them. I had the barbecue nachos, a grilled cheese sandwich, baked beans, and their homemade potato salad. When I walked in, I went downstairs. I immediately felt the Memphis vibe. All of the pictures, souvenirs, music, etc. made us feel right at home. It is family owned and at the owner was super kind to my baby boy and I. Now let's get into the food! My favorite was the potato salad. It was so delicious. I would definitely go back and order it to pair with my meals at home. If you don't like it sweet then it's not for you. The nachos were good. It can with a bag of chips, so I had to assemble them myself (that could also be because I ordered them to go). The chicken was the highlight. It was juice and seasoned really well. The grilled cheese and baked beans were ok. The parking is a "thing", so I don't believe I will dine in. If I want some more or to try more items, I will order takeout!

We of course took the only table that could seat five people comfortably. They had plenty of 4 seater booths and tables. The condiment box at our table looks like it had not been cleaned out in months. Some old time movie decorations definitely caught my eye and those were pretty cool. No music playing, and the touch tunes was down. Just one lonely tv playing cable tv above the bar. Bar had maybe a selection of 3 beers and 4 cocktail/Seltzer cans. I didn't see an ounce of liquor. The men of our party when using the bathroom said the toilet was infested with buzzing flies. The ladies room had an off smell, and we had to fight the nearly empty bottle to get soap to wash our hands. Family of five shared the family feast. The slab of ribs were super tender and fall off the bone but had absolutely no flavor at all besides the baked on bbq slapped on the top. The pulled pork was kind of cold and also had no seasoning or marinade. The chicken wings had some seasoning on top but no flavor inside besides some old fry grease flavoring. We were given a warm bottle of barbecue sauce but the bottle was so nasty and concerning no one at our table was brave enough to use it. Platter had Your average sliced white bread on side. The collard greens were praised by the whole table and was knocked out by everyone first. Service was good, but I would surely hope with being the only patrons inside for a whole hour besides a to go order. Restaurant desperately needs some TLC and some deep cleaning. Seasoning or a marinade needed on the meats as well. I would have to give it a hard pass next time.
