We were passing through West Memphis and stopped for lunch. Tiny neighborhood barbecue joint but it smelled majestic and the pork sandwich was fantastic! I'd ask for double cole slaw next time. Wow.... Just wow. Traveling through and wants hoping foe some barbecue. This place popped up. This is a "hole-in-the-wall" place. I don't remember if they have a table. We had the pulled pork with slaw sandwich. The man himself was siding behind the counter. The woman who helped us was very friendly and helpful. We picked up and drove off. We chose to carry out. We ordered 2 plates, one chopped (pork) and one chicken. They came with coleslaw, fries or beans. We chose coleslaw and one of each. Beans were too sweet for our taste and fries were not crispy as requested. The sandwiches had generous portions of meat on a large bun. We thought they forgot our slaw but found it on our sandwich. Really love the chopped pork BBQ sandwiches from this hole-in-the-wall spot in West Memphis. I ordered one of each, a hot and a sweet. The sweet is very, very sweet, and the hot isn't really hot at all, but is also a lot less sweet. If you like more of a traditional BBQ sauce, I would get the "hot" version. They are quite filling, and while I usually eat a lot of food, two definitely made me very full. The owner (William) is usually there, working the counter, and he's an absolute ham and a joy to talk to while you wait for your food. They are currently only doing takeout, and are cash only (the sandwiches are $7 each). If you like biking, you can actually rent one of the bike share bikes and get most of the way here from downtown Memphis on trails (the last 1.5 miles are via a road, but the sidewalks are wide too). We read up on the reviews of this little place while road tripping and looking for BBQ near Memphis. We had to stop in and see if we caught a glimpse of Mr. William's. WE SURE DID! This seemed to be the place in West Memphis to get BBQ, so I had to come since I had a project in West Memphis one day. It's a pretty basic building from the outside with a gravel lot, 1/2 block off the main drag. Inside is pretty basic too with 7 tables for dining. I'd give them 3.5 stars, but bumped it up to 4 due to the reasonable prices and friendly staff. I ordered the bbq (hot) sandwich, which is pulled pork, with cold slaw, a side of beans and a link of sausage. They have mild and hot bbq, but there is no spiciness to the hot. I wonder what the mild tastes like. I met the owner which is a character in his own right and will strike up a conversation with you whether you're paying attention or not. He has a lot of stories to tell. As far as the items I tried, I really enjoyed the bbq sandwich, because they just aren't made this way in Texas. The baked bean side dish was pretty basic as it was just canned beans with added pieces of chopped pork. The sausage link is actually a sandwich you can order with or without cole slaw. It tastes like a smoked hot dog, and I don't eat hot dogs, so I didn't even finish it. Many reviewers, along with the owner, say the burger is also good. Tried William's while on a bbq tour of the Memphis area. Added them to the list at the last minute and so glad I did. We tried them shortly after they had opened. The interior looked basic but had some seating so we chose to fine in. We ordered the regular bbq sandwiches, with fries and baked bean for sides. What a fantastic sandwich. Quintessential Memphis bbq with smoked chopped pork topped with slaw and a terrific sauce. Just delicious, comparable to the more famous Payne's. And the sides were great too! Loved the seasoned fries actually. This place is a hidden gem, and has been open a very long time with the owner still working behind the counter. I don't normally work in Left Memphis, but I found this near where I was and saw that it had 5 stars for 25 reviews. I normally don't start off with BBQ at most places, because it has to be really good to impress me. I felt pretty confident it would be good based on the review average, so I got a jumbo with fries. Mr. Williams was behind the counter. This man is in his 80s. Such a cool old guy. He opened this place 54 years ago in 63. He knows his BBQ. He said he still cooks it himself 6 days a week. I talked to him for about 10 minutes. I asked him what a jumbo cost in 63 when he opened, but he couldn't remember. These guys are pretty slow. Mr. Williams has his own old school way of doing things. There's no cash register or fancy computers. He adds and subtracts on notebook paper. He won't take your order until the last person is served. He had two people working in the back, but he only gives them one order at a time. He says this way they can't make mistakes. I got lucky getting there before the crowd did, but when the crowd did get there, it was a 30 minute wait. Nobody bitched about it. They waited on their food because they knew how good it was. I asked Mr. Williams when he would retire and what would become of his place. He said he'll never retire and he won't quit working until they take him to Forest Hill. One of his employees will inherit the restaurant to keep it going. It's an old building, but not necessarily in a bad way. It'll do for BBQ, but I wouldn't make it a place for date night. But then again, being it's Arkansas, it's not that bad. As far as the BBQ goes, it was 5 star. Not necessarily the best I've ever had, but it was one of them. I dare you to write a negative review! My friend was requiring us to stop here on our 18+ hour road trip. He was setting our expectations super high. The first time he ever had Mr. Williams BBQ he cried. His expectations were on point! The people were incredibly kind, friendly and helpful! Mr. Williams himself was there telling lots of stories! The BBQ sandwich with coleslaw on it was mouthwatering good. Seriously melt in your mouth good. I had to close my eyes a few times when I took a bite just to savor the flavor and goodness. Parking can be a bit tough but they were super busy so it makes sense! Ya, how can you not give a 5? I've lived in Memphis for over 4 years now and have had quite a bit of BBQ. I made my first trip to William's BBQ today and go the chopped pork sandwich w/ mild sauce + water = $7.50. While other BBQ joints that are well known try to be unique w/ the sandwich (paynes/cozy corner/bbq shop), this sandwich is a straightforward sandwich and it hits the nail on the head. Pork was fantastic, not much fat, good mix of both tender crispy pieces. Bread (standard bun) and slaw are standard, not meant to be the stars of the show in this case. I found the sauce to be exceptional. A bit sweeter than I would expect but absolutely delicious. Overall, sandwich reminded me quite a bit of Tom's sandwich... just a damn good traditional pork sandwich on a bun. Great value. I still prefer Cozy Corner or Paynes on account of the uniqueness, however this is certainly worth seeking out. Agree that if you're a tourist downtown (where I live), and you're a foodie... skip central and rezendvous and make the 15 min drive to this unassuming spot for a pork sandwich (and of course cozy corner, paynes, bbq shop as well). read more
