Went in for rental gear. Was given rental gear. However was charged for not returning gear that was better than what was given. IF RENTING, take pictures of every stitch and piece of dirt and probably also smell each square inch to make sure you can document the smell it already has before going in to return it. It was funny and aggravating watching them go through my tent smelling and looking for anything they can charge me. However, they will try to get as much money out of you and give you below average rental gear. Should've just bought my own tent for how much they ended up charging me. Also, there are other rental places in town. Or you can buy some off some individual sellers. The LetGo app had some tents and other camping gear for sale in the area. Can probably ask those sellers to rent off them. read more

Hubby loves to trot into gift shops looking for some kind of souvenir from his visit. He didn't find anything he liked but I got 5 postcards for $1. So I am glad he dragged me into the store. It's fairly large with lots of things to look at if you like camping stuff or outdoor things. read more

These guys are awesome. If you're tired of running around the big box stores or national chains looking for your outdoor needs, this is the place for you. Kim and Molly were my tour guides through the store, super knowledgeable and listened to what I needed. They weren't just trying to make a sale. They really tried to get me what I needed, even if I didn't know what it was. Prices are also super reasonable even though they might be considered a specialty store. Staff were so friendly and helpful. We rented gear for our first camping trip to Zion and Bryce. One of the employees even took out the tent to show us how to set it up in the store. They were so kind and the prices were great. Would 100% recommend to anyone in the area or first time campers! I had a pleasant change of scenery when I walked in peace surplus. After going to REI where you expect to find everything. The selections were monochromatic, and the value was horrible. (Seemed really overpriced) I had to go online and in the store several times and returned two jackets before giving up. Turned up in Flagstaff on the second leg of our holiday from Scotland and since I am a skiing fanatic I decided to hire skis, boots, poles and helmets from Peace Surplus for my wife, son and I. We stayed in Flagstaff post Grand Canyon, so we checked out the downtown. Amazingly, there were at least four camping/outdoors stores. This store had a great selection of backpacks, sleeping bags, camping supplies, and general camping supplies. They also had clothes and a whole section on ultimate frisbee supplies. They seemed pretty knowledgable and very helpful. I'm giving 4 stars for two reasons: I've got my list of my favorite non-chain outdoors stores and I know this store could be better. Secondly, it had a slightly dated vibe. Other than that, this place is solid. read more

I'm embarrassed to admit I went to REI first before coming to this store. I live in a big city, so call me a creature of habit. I couldn't find what I was looking for at REI (UV blocking longsleeve for hiking), nor could I find an available employee to ask for help. I found Peace Surplus on here and decided to go there. Two very friendly employees helped me and went above and beyond on answering questions and offering options. Lesson learned - always go with the local shop! From other products I looked at prices are also comparable to any other outdoor store, so it's not like you save money either going to the "big retail" stores. I will be back again next time I'm in Flagstaff. read more

Some of the staff (Giselle and Brad) were super helpful and knowledgeable. However the manager (Different Brad) was not helpful in the least and completely unreasonable. As the only store to rent snowshoes in the area one would expect he would be eager to rent them. However after multiple conversations he was unreasonable with not wanting to rent a day prior so we could get an early start up Humphry's. He wanted us to wait to see if there was enough snow that morning. Again some staff was great, but the manager seems inexperienced with hiking. Truly sad read more

Beyond dissatisfied- zero stars My friends and I were all meeting in the Grand Canyon for a reunion so flagstaff is the hour and a half away point. Renting gear from peace surplus was a huge mistake, very immoral on their part. For starters and mostly we specifically needed bags that can keep a person warm at zero degrees temperatures. Getting any cheap polyester bag will not do the trick and in the twenty degree bag they gave us I can imagine it was way worse then me waking up so many times cold that I went to rest in the bathroom for half the night (so yes the tents were really thin and bad to) the only way I survived the second night was because I squeezed inside my friends bag with another bag over us. The third night most people slept in the van because the mats were also super thin and I drove back home to catch my thanksgiving flight but shouldn't have because the first night had made me more tired than usual at five and six. Let's go back to when we picked up gear; peace surplus told us that we had to pay for extra camp supplies that we did not need just because we had reserved for a couple that missed a flight. To top it off upon returning from the Grand Canyon they added a charge for damages meaning a tent tear which we didn't make and I had commented on prior. Do not degrade yourself by going near this place, you're better off sleeping in a hammock (we know because we tried it)! read more

Worst place to EVER rent anything out. So, we ordered 6 tents, 14 sleeping bag, and sleeping mats. We went to the grand canyons to camp for 3 nights. We first noticed that we were missing sleeping bags and a tent. Next we realize that the tents and sleeping bags WERE NOT reliable. My sleeping bag was broken, my tent had rips in it already. Next, we rented out WINTER sleeping bags and INSULATED tents. Received NONE OF IT. We use the tent for one single night, about 4 hours because we were not able to stand the cold and slept in the car. When we return there equipment we were charged for all the broken items we received and had to buy them all new equipment which was 305$ . They were also the rudest people I have ever met and assumed we drank liquor in the tents and started lecturing us. There was no drinking and we did not deserve what we got. Thank you peace surplus for making camping a living hell. read more

They are willing to order what you want if they do not have in stock. One of the best fly fishing shops in Northern Arizona. They stock SAGE and have tons of flys (with a recomendation board for the local areas). Have a great selection of all other gear, from hiking shoes to tents . Thank you Peace Surplus! Pleasantly Surprised by the service here. Super nice people(Connor, Maddy) when we rented the equipment they were quick and professional. Unfortunately, we were not able to make it to the slope because we slid into a ditch and it took 3 hours to get pulled out. The details aren't really relevant for the review, but needless to say it disappointed all of us. When Dave asked us how the day went we explained our misfortune. They promptly refunded all of our rental fees to our amazement. We'll be back again. read more

Peace Surplus provides a great range of outdoor goods. From shoes, to kayaks, backpacks, and more, you can find most anything you need for the outdoors here. Personally I find that all the hippies in Flagstaff load up the thrift stores with decent outdoors gear that I can avoid a place like Peace Surplus, but when it came to fly fishing, there just aren't enough Arizona fishermen to come by a fly rod at a thrift store or goodwill. I turned to Peace. The service was excellent and Matt took extra time to guide me in my purchasing of a fly rod. I had fished before, even fly fished, but Matt took the time to teach me basic maintenance, setup, and technique for fishing with certain flies. It was very much appreciated and I'm glad he took the time to help me out instead of just saying, "here are the rods, here are the flies, good luck." I'd say if you are looking for anything basic such as clothes, backpacks, head lamps, etc. stick to the local thrift stores (Full Circle namely), goodwill, and the sports exchange, especially if you are in no hurry to get what you are looking for as it might take time for that certain item to come stumbling through the thrift store; but if you need something advanced and top of the line, right now, head to the Peace Surplus. read more

My family was going on their first multi-day backpacking trip. We rented backpacks from Peace Surplus - great experience from start to finish. This place is the greatest. We came up from Phoenix with my dog and left her leash at home. They have a dog friendly section. Because Christmas hit and took their supply of leashes the gentleman kindly improvised for me and made me a leash out of chord and a lanyard for like a big $2.56!! Thank you! What a cool store- lots to look at and the staff is helpful yet laid back enough to let us browse. I read some of the reviews and was worried about the price, but most of the clothes are technical stuff (like North Face with the sunscreen built in). Their yoga selection was awesome. Could even bring my dog in! So, yeah, you can order anything online for cheaper bc stores have to bring in the product and pay people - but I'd rather shop local and be able to ask questions. Cuz I honestly am not an outdoorsy person and need direction There are sales too. Got a zipper fuzzy north face jacket for like half off. The owner is quirky and always around- everyone is smiling . Parked right out front. They should order some women's long pants but I'm used to not finding any anyway Also, wanted to mention that I found Peace Surplus bc I went to REI first - but one of the dudes there told me about it. REI is so sterile and big boxy so I was glad for the tip. Funny that he was my recommender... The prices at Peace actually beat some of the REI stuff.
