The overall company was trying to get the most money out of my insurance as possible. I started off in the sober living facility and during Christmas time, I had covid over winter and had to take NyQuil and that was the first excuse for forcing me back into a rehab program that was not needed. My reason for being in the program in the first place was that I had 18 back to back surgeries over the past 4 years and was on opioids for a long period of time so this was a way to detox in a safe environment. There was no psychological addiction, just physical dependence to opioids. They lied about multiple addictions to medication(amphetamine addiction) that I was prescribed since childhood and used it to get more money through insurance. They also lied about an alcohol addiction, when I am medically intolerant to alcohol. When I got back to the sober living after this time I was talked about poorly among staff members and called "attention seeking" for asking for a few days off in order to visit 2 dying family members. Eventually someone in the group had consumed alcohol and told the staff which upset another client due to the unfairness and favoritism. This upset client gave me alcohol without my knowledge or consent and afterwards told the staff that I was drunk. This other client had been upset and doing things like this for 2 weeks prior to this incident. I believe he did this in order to prove a point that they will send people they dislike or with good insurance back to rehab in order to get more money. This client later confessed to me he had put alcohol in my drink without my consent and I had a reaction to the alcohol and was placed back into the rehab facility. I was put on addictive barbiturates and unnecessary medications for 2 days before my insurance denied coverage due to fraudulent services. The alcohol level was so low that there was no logical reason I needed to be there. I was then abandoned as a patient had had to find a new place to live in 2 hours or I was out on the street. Remember it's just a business. They don't actually care about you. They left another 2 of my friends on their own where one eventually fell into a coma following her abandonment. Something else they did was contact my pharmacy and told them never to fill any of my prescriptions ever from any doctor. I was no longer under their care at all. I'm a disabled person and this made it very difficult to obtain medication that I needed. This is a HIPPA violation for sure.

After 23 years of abusing alcohol and not dealing with my depression, I decided to check myself in to Alo. From the initial phone consultation I knew I had made the right decision. They had a driver named Mike who met me at the airport and helped ease my mind and answered my many questions on the drive to Malibu. Once I got to the Alo detox house over looking the Pacific Ocean, I was put at ease by the friendly staff and councillors, ( many of whom had some experience with recovery themselves). This was an extremely emotional time for me as I realized I would be getting to the core of my problems with Alcohol and depression over the following month, but not once did I feel it unsafe to discuss any and all topics with the amazing staff, therapists and psychologists. At the next phase my lodging was in a giant mansion with all the amenities including a pool and 24 hour staff on call to help with any issues. There was an absolute dream team of chefs who made all types of delicious meals to suite any and all dietary restrictions. Can't say enough good things about how well I was fed throughout my stay. The daily programming covered a wide variety of courses and the group discussions were where I found some of the most comfort and solidified some great friendships with other clients. Jared and Evan have created an amazing thing down there in Malibu and I hope they are aware of the impact they've had on many lives, including mine. From the…read moremoment I (nervously) walked in, I could tell that the staff genuinely cared about what I was going thru and wanted me to get well. They made me instantly feel welcomed and comfortable, and throughout my stay I grew even more appreciative for the compassion and skill level of the staff. Their approach is very holistic and expands far beyond just the 12 steps. We learned meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, acupuncture, among many other things. The therapists are the best I've ever spoken with. I had 2 assigned to me including a trauma therapist who helped me work through issues I had never really spoken about with anyone before, helping connect my childhood trauma with my substance abuse issues, and giving me the tools to deal with it. The house is very spacious and comfortable with a giant pool and hot tub, and we had time to relax and match movies and hang out. I laughed a lot with the other clients and had more fun than I ever would have imagined in rehab and made new friends that I've continued to stay friends with after leaving. Beyond just getting clean, the Villa gave me the breakthroughs and tools I needed to stay sober and taught me how to enjoy life, laugh, and have fun without needing alcohol and for that I'm forever grateful.
