There are so many places in the Village in Whistler to eat it was a hard choice, but we decided to give Peaked Pies a try for lunch. Others have said they aren't traditional Aussie pies and I get that if that is your expectation. I always try to appreciate the cafe for their take on the food items. Peaked Pies didn't disappoint. It is a small spot with just a few tables outside and a few tables inside. The eatery gets pretty busy so we felt lucky to get a table inside. They have a lot of choices and we settled on the ones we wanted to try. I went with the veggie pie and added the mushy style peas, mashed potatoes and gravy to the top. Mr. B decided on the Kangaroo pie after talking to the staff. He was a little leary of where the Kangaroo came from, but we were told there is a farm in British Columbia that raises them, so he wanted to try something he had never had. Please see the note below about the kangaroo. There is a correction. The pies came out and were quite large, but we must have been hungry and they were scrumptious we finished them off. Let's start with the veggie pie. It was filled with veggies, carrots, potatoes, onion, corn, celery and yams. The sauce is a coconut milk based sauce and was creamy. The Hopper, with ground kangaroo was lovely. The pie is filled with ground kangaroo, and I mean ground, it was fine meat and stuffed full with a Cabernet Merlot Balsamic Reduction that balanced the sweetness of the meat. The service was great, the staff was nice, and helpful. Great choice. NOTE: I received a correction from the owner of Peaked Pies after posting this review. The Kangaroo is not sourced from British Columbia as we were told. While the food was excellent this was disappointing to hear. Mr. B specifically asked where the kangaroo was sourced as he didn't want frozen and would have ordered something else. Peaked Pies was a wonderful find for us while visiting Whistler. They were the perfect lunch spot for us with all the snow outside. They are located at the north end of the village away from the ski area. It was a little bit of a walk with both my wife and daughter asking "are we there yet" several times. They are a small shop with a few tables inside. It was too cold to sit outside. No sit down service. You order at the counter and get your food at the counter. The pies we ordered were fantastic. Each pie had "pepper" diagram of the type of pie it was. The Hopper (kangaroo) had a diagram of a Kangaroo. The chunky steak & mushroom and chicken, mushroom & leek had their own diagrams. Where else can you get kangaroo in Canada?! I got the Hopper, which has ground kangaroo, and ordered it "peaked" (topped with mashed potatoes, peas, and vegetarian gravy). Kangaroo is a bit gamey, but that didn't dissuade me. I do think there was too much pea though, and having it "peaked" made the top crust soggy. Lastly, the space is tight - probably only fits about 10 people - so be prepared for a quick in-and-out as it does get busy. I will be back to try fruit pies next time I'm in Whistler! read more

This Australian cafe was introduced to Whistler in 2013, specializing in traditional Australian savory pies. Peaked Pies makes it home at the far end of Main St in a shopping complex shared with a hamburger joint and a coffee shop. The front window is decorated with cartoon pies and a Peaked-related word collage. The small space is cozy and inviting. Immediately ahead is a log cross-sectioned counter with a warmly lit, heated pie display. A handful of two-seater wooden tables and metal chairs are pressed against the chartreuse muraled wall on the right. Soft pop and acoustic covers play softly in the background. My partner and I stopped by Peaked for a late breakfast, and we were one of just a handful of customers. We opted for the Chunky Steak & Mushroom pie, which we upgraded to "Get Peaked" (adding mashed potatoes, mushy green peas, and gravy on top). The rich flavor was almost entirely within the pie filling. While tasty, the mix-ins were sparse, and I'm not sure that I had a single bite of mushroom. In contrast, the potatoes and peas were plentiful but flavorless. A Yelp check-in granted a complimentary Minington (a mini lamington, which is an Australian chocolate-and-coconut cake). The cake itself was moist and soft, but the flavor profile was dominated by gummy artificial coconut. The service was friendly and efficient, but prices felt unnecessarily high -- nearly $15 for a single pie. And the portion size was admittedly awkward: too big for a single dinner, but not quite big enough to reasonably split. I got the Traditional Aussie which is a classic ground beef, onions & gravy pie, loaded (or "peaked" - costs extra, definitely worth it for some extra veggies). One loaded pie is a solid dinner, or one and a half normal pies. I got to sample my friend's Beef Curry pie, which was deliciously spiced, and the Hopper, which was interestingly game-y but I would not order it again. They also sell frozen pies to-go! We have been here a couple of times to get meals for our group and this is the perfect food for that. Everyone can get their own flavor and it is a hearty meal that will fill you up. The interior is very small so we have gotten it to go each time to eat back in the hotel. They have a package deal for a set number of pies. There are so many different kinds on the menu, there is surely something for everyone in your group. I've had the steak, bacon, and cheese and the chunky steak and mushroom. Both were great, but the mushroom one was the best. The mushroom sauce is pretty strong though so make sure you love mushrooms if you get this one. I really liked the chunky steak in the chunky beef pie. The peas were surprisingly good. The overall size and pies were great. Super friendly and helpful ordering. The lamington dessert was amazing and a must have. It was both soft and light as well as creamy and sweet. Our kids also loved it and they're pretty picky about dessert. Almost no seating inside, but a bustling busy feel that's appropriate. We took a Traditional Aussie and Berry pie frozen back to our rental and made them later. Spent $40 on two pies (not peaked, just pies) and a sausage roll (not with a salad or anything else, just a plain roll). Since when did these three items cost this much of money???? Did they make a mistake in their charges for these three items? Or are the prices just ridiculous? The lady who served us pies didn't give us cutleries and said "in Aussie, we eat without cutlery". I sensed discrimination and unequal treatment here. Others around us were eating without cutlery cutleries, did you say the same to them? I took our pies, placed them on our table and then came back to ask for cutleries but had to wait a good 5 minutes after receiving our food because no one was in sight despite us calling out to them. Again, I sense discrimination here. I used to really like this place and gave them lots of Business over the years by bringing friends and family over but today is the last time I spend money here. Stopped in for a super late lunch on a Friday just before 3:30. There will still people coming in an out at that time, but it wasn't super busy. All of the pies are already made, and they reheat them for you. We ordered the Traditional Aussie, Butter Chicken, and Sausage Roll. The Traditional Aussie is ground beef with gravy, which I liked over the butter chicken because the chicken tasted old and dry. We didn't get them peaked (mashed potatoes and mushy peas) because I don't like peas. Even without it peaked, it was enough food for two people. The sausage roll was good too, but it was more like a roll of ground beef than it was sausage. I wish it came with some sort of dipping sauce. Good place for quick meal. Peak pies is a crowd favorite everytime we are in Whistler! Location: On outskirts of the village, near the Pizzeria Antico. We have eaten in before but there are just 3 small tables inside, and one outside. I personally recommend taking home to eat, they stay warm, and reheat very well! Highly recommend getting your pie peaked because that gravy is phenomenal. The pie is a decent personal size but can be shared by 2 people. I've never had Australian pie before, so I was really excited to try this place as we walked passed it a few times since it was near our hotel. I was still hungry for breakfast and decided to stop by here as they also sold coffee which my cousin was craving. Once we walked in, we were greeted by the cashier who was really friendly and let us choose dine in or take out. There's some high tops and a few tables, but there's not lots of room and gets filled up quick. Luckily, we were the only ones in the store to begin with. I decided to get their signature peaked pie which came out within a few minutes hot. You get your plate from the side counter and can go sit down at a table. There are additional salt and pepper or ketchup on the side to use as well as additional silverware. I thought it was cool that they had frozen pies for sale in the back too. The service is very minimal interaction as it seems it's usually just one worker in the shop? She takes our order and leaves us alone for the rest of the meal. You don't bus the tables yourself, just leave the dishes on the table and they'll take it off after you leave. We all ordered different thing, but I got the vegetable medley and made it a peaked pie: the peaked pie essentially comes with mash potatoes, mushy peas and gravy atop. This was really interesting. I've never had anything like this before, but I honestly thought it was very bland. It lacked salt and even the gravy was not as rich as I was expecting. The mash potatoes resembled an instant mash flavoring and smooth powder texture. The peas were slightly better, but what you'd expect of "mushy peas." I liked how flaky the pie was and it had a good amount of filling inside. The toppings made it soggy fast which I didn't enjoy, so next time I think I would just get the pie alone. Now had there been some sort of hot sauce or more seasoning in the gravy or pie overall, I think I would've enjoyed it much more. I did use the ketchup, but it didn't enhance my palate as much as I had hoped. The presentation was pretty for sure. 16oz long black coffee: my cousin said this wasn't bad, but tasted like instant coffee. It got the job done for needing caffeine and she added cream and sugar to make it more enjoyable, but it wasn't anything spectacular. spinach & ricotta roll: was very dry... the ricotta was crumbly and overall needed more salt and herbs to flavor it. my pie was filling though and I believe it's redeemable with a bit more seasoning, but it had a good base which is the reasoning for my 3 stars. Out of all the places we ate in Whistler, this definitely wasn't the worst. It's a nice spot for a quick meal and caffeine fix before you start your day.
