Ordered via door dash for self pickup. The ladies were nice and it was done on time. It was extremely hot and fresh. Prices pretty good. Flavors were not great on my cashew shrimp. Shrimp tasted dirty if you know what I mean. Very few cashew. Maybe rename celery shrimp. So did I eat it? Yes. But probably won't go back. Too May other options.

    General tso chicken

Pretty underwhelming. I ordered the general tso chicken, white rice and some cream cheese wontons. The chicken was very unauthentic. It seemed like it was thrown together with some fried chicken in some soy sauce, the wontons were okay, very small amount of cream cheese inside. The rice had a slight hard texture like it was from this morning. The entire meal was just decent. Won't go back unless some changes are made.

    Egg drop soup ($1)

Super cheap Americanized Chinese food that's much healthier and fresher than most American Chinese alternatives, such as ABC Chinese, Little World, and Panda Express. They have $4.55 lunch deals and $6.75 dinner deals that come with fried ham rice, soup, and an eggroll. Portions are perfect, and it's so affordable! They also have a Chinese meny if you're hoping for a more authentic option. The list is limited to one page and seems more Chinese wedding style, but it's not bad. I've tried the BBQ pork wonton soup which tasted very homemade and healthy. It reminded me of home cooking and hit the spot for this winter weather. The wontons were lacking in meat and tasted older though. Their sweet and sour chicken seems to be the thing most people here love. It's also very fresh and unique compared to most places. They batter an entire chicken filet, fry it whole, cut it into strips, and slather sauce over it, so its not like deep fried balls of chicken most places have. I prefer Pearl's way since it keeps the texture crispier and enjoy this visual presentation more. Their egg drop soup isn't flavorful but it's nice and thick with adequate starch and egg. Overall, I see the appeal here and would stop by if I'm driving by and am hungry or just aiming for something cheap.

Shrimp cakes with tofu (Chinese menu)

Its really a hidden gem in the west Jordan area. I've been going here over the last 8 years and their food is still the same. Its pretty good. Their lunch special are always so affordable. For under $7 you can get a pretty decent meal. Also ask for the Chinese menu. It's not necessary in Chinese but you can get the more authentic dishes like the shrimp cake and tofu. Overall good value and better than average Chinese food.

The hostess seemed clueless when we arrived and I had to follow up with her a few times about our table. We weren't seated in the main dining room, so I had to walk back and forth to get the ladies with the carts to come over. Service eventually improved once I started talking with the staff in Chinese. Note that the restaurant advertises that they have gluten free options but most of the dishes aren't truly gluten free. The rice was warm but the Kung Pao was cold and majority of it was veggies. Next we got the appetizer (cream cheese wantons), those were our favorite thing from the menu. They came out hot and the flavor was great! The broccoli and beef was the next dish and it was freshly made, it came out hot and was good. Not a lot of flavor but at this point we were very hungry and had no other choice but to dig in! Lastly the orange peel chicken also came out hot and it had good flavor as well. Overall the wait time for the dishes was ridiculous, only four tables were occupied. The place was slow and the service was painfully slow as well. Save your money and go to panda express for quicker service for a lot less money!

Cold Noodles with Chili Garlic Sauce: This dish completely hit the spot! Perfectly balanced and packed with flavor. Scrambled Eggs with Tomato: A classic, simple dish done absolutely right. For starters, we ordered the Wor Wonton Soup. The broth was rich and hearty. The shrimps were large and plentiful. All the vegetables blended in with the flavors. I just wish the beef was a little more tender. A little marinade in baking soda would fix this. We ordered some chicken lettuce wraps. This has minced chicken, celery, bamboo shoots, and carrots. These are good by themselves but are best with hoisin sauce. I just wish the lettuce leaves were bigger. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was also good. The sauce had a nice blend of mayo, honey and lemon. It had a little too much breading for me but still tasted good. For $16.99, I wished there was a bit more shrimp. One thing I really appreciate - they GLAZE the walnuts! This is one of the few places that I actually like the sauce and they glaze the walnuts! The Crispy Beef is definitely my favorite. In fact, I think this is better than the one I get from Red Maple. It was not too sweet and had just the right amount of heat. Again, I really wish they would marinate the beef in baking soda to soften it up. The last dish we ordered was the Garlic Chicken. The server forgot to put the order in for this dish and there was a rush to get it out to us. They forgot to put garlic in this dish so wee sent it back. It was perfect when it came back. This place is fast becoming our go-to-place for Chinese Food. It's was a nice surprise and I'll can't wait to try the other dishes!

The look of the restaurant inside has changed a few times. when I was there last there was a casual seating area at the back of the restaurant. There were people there waiting for takeout orders. I always have to order the cold cucumber salad. It is a great accompaniment to any dish. I added the peanuts to the cucumbers because I really like them together so if you order the cucumbers, they will not come with peanuts. It is a strange request, but they accommodated me with no problem. They had a case at the front of the restaurant with grapes and strawberries, skewered and coated in a crunchy sugary coating. It was a little bit messy, but I did not mind because it tasted so good. The strawberries were super sweet, fresh and juicy with a thin, sweet crunchy shell. I will try the grapes next time. We were stopping in SLC for a few days on our way home from CO, and I really wanted Malatang. I saw there was a chain Malatang place and Mr. D's, so obviously we had to go with the locally-owned one. The restaurant was small, but the lighting was bright and everything was clean and tidy. The station to build your own bowl was kept at proper holding temperature. There was a good variety of everything, and the owner was even bringing out fresh rolls of frozen meat when we arrived. The veggies were fresh as well. I really liked that the trays we put our raw ingredients on were wrapped with plastic for extra food safety. After we finished choosing our ingredients, we went up to the counter and told the owner how we wanted our Malatang to be prepared. I went with the mild spicy bone broth and my husband went with the spicy dry pot. While we waited, we prepared our sauce. I like to add extra garlic and chili oil to mine, as well as green onions and cilantro. We decided to just share one bowl of sauce this time. This Malatang place also comes with free unlimited rice, which is not something I've seen at other Malatang places in NorCal. We didn't end up getting any rice because we had plenty of ingredients in our individual bowls, but if we were sharing, then we probably would have gotten rice. Considering the price of the Malatang was only $15 a pound, what a steal. It was nice to watch the owner prepare our Malatang right behind the checkout counter! Everything was piping hot when it was ready to be picked up. You are in charge of getting your own food when the buzzer rings. We especially liked that the fish/meat balls we selected were cut in half to make sure they were cooked the entire way through. The bone broth was deliciously flavorful and silky, and the meat was tender. All the ingredients were so good! Upon adding some of my sauce, that definitely turned my broth into a flavor bomb. My husband's dry pot was delightfully numbing and spicy, and all the ingredients were coated evenly. He was also a big fan. While we ate, more people arrived, and I was glad that all the Asians knew this place was the place for Malatang. Soon, the restaurant was almost full. We wrapped up our meal and left feeling satisfied and happy. I would definitely recommend Mr. D's Malatang for those needing their Malatang fix while in SLC (and of course for locals who love Malatang too) and can't wait to return the next time we visit.
