Great little find in The Mayton in Cary. Breakfast was very good and the staff were cheerful and attentive.

Came here for brunch with the family on a Sunday morning around 11am. That day was the day I found out about the new law in NC that FINALLY recognized brunch and allowing people to consume alcoholic beverages before noon. My mom had supposedly requested a quiet area to dine and though she acted "surprised" that we ended up in a private room, we got a whole room to ourselves. That was different. Probably not necessary but the fact that they were able to accommodate this ridiculous request (love her though), was AWESOME! I ordered the steak and eggs that was just okay. It was good, but nothing to necessarily rave about. For drinks, we had the Mayton Mimosa(that had some vodka in it) and got a pitcher to share which was delicious. It was enough for 8 glasses (2 per person). My mom had The Barry White which was very good but maybe not for pre-meal drink (more like a dessert drink would have made more sense). Attended a bridal brunch here last summer and it was lovely. All of the food was delicious and the mimosas were our favorite The service was also great and we appreciated not feeling rushed as we were celebrating a special occasion and the space was decorated perfectly. Sorry for length. Great Location. Great Food. Great Ambiance. Service questionable. Management response terrible. 3 stars only because we liked the wait staff. Otherwise, it would have been 2 stars. We got there for our 12:45pm reservation and waited til almost 1pm before getting water. We then waited another 10 minutes before anyone came by to take our drink order. We were pretty relaxed so didn't make a big deal about it. Waited another 10-15 minutes for someone to take our food order. We felt like we just slipped through the cracks with communication in the restaurant. We were ok until the two tables, who sat well after us got their food. They were almost done before we got two of our 3 orders. The salad with grilled chicken came out about 5 minutes later. None of the above is an exaggeration. We were frustrated but ok until the manager made it worse. He kept reiterating that the other tables put their orders in before we did. We explained that this was the issue - nobody came to our table to begin with. That didn't seem to be a problem to him. Even the table next to us came over later, saying the manager was obviously gaslighting us. The meal should have been comped and it was only discounted. This is a very nice and expensive restaurant. Ambience is always wonderfully relaxed. Had chicken and waffles. Pserfect! Also had my go to brunch dish of smoked salmon scramble. This time it was awfully salty as though additional salt was put in the eggs. Also, the same sauce for the chicken was drizzled across it. Looked interesting but not a good taste. I got the FALL VEGETABLE & LUMP CRAB* $22 barely any crab at all like a pinch of crab & 1 poached egg instead of 2? which clearly states egg(s)- the succotash was just beans. The only thing that was good was side of bacon -somehow my bill was $43.00 with 1 drink & the side of bacon. No plans to go back which is sad because service was good & it's a nice setting but too loud & bad acoustics. Big thumbs down to the so called chef on 3/13 on staff on Sunday. I saw the online this place had recently and we decided to go for brunch on Sunday. It would be nice if they had their own designated parking, since the street was kind of full. The front end restaurant of the Mayton Hotel so it is really nice; loved the avian theme and the library room seating area. We ordered a little bit of everything. Shrimp and grits, pancakes, chicken and waffles, the French toast, and omelette and every thing was amazing. The service was 10/10, and their apple cobbler dessert was so good. Had 2 occurrences where we asked for a table and they looked at us like we were crazy & then after a couple awkward minutes of them looking at their table map to see where they could sit us they asked if we were hotel guests. And then said they have a ton of reservations at this time but there were more than 10 tables open when we looked around. Then they proceeded to take us to a table in the patio directly in the sun and I asked if we could move to a shaded table & they said no because of reservations. There was only one other family eating in the patio at that time. And the patio had TONS of open tables. So we just left because clearly they didn't want us there. I live in Cary & I never want to come back after two instances like this. What kind of "hospitality" is this?!? read more

My friends and I (party of 6) recently celebrated a birthday at Peck & Plume and were sadly disappointed. The restaurant is located in the Mayton Hotel in the heart of downtown Cary, parking is available along the street. The Hotel is beautiful and the atmosphere is very inviting. The hostesses were pleasant and directed me to a nice bar where I waited for the rest of my party to arrive. We began our evening with drinks, and one couple ordered a bottle of wine. The server could not remember which drinks went to what people and then she placed the bottle of wine on the table and walked away without opening it! When she finally returned, we reminded her about the wine and she opened and served the bottle, but she did not know how to properly open a wine bottle and was awkward with it (please train your waitstaff)! Next, we had several shared appetizers for the table: 1) Chips and Dip this was a generous plate of house made chips and crudite, along with a grilled scallion and one grilled artichoke. The Blue Cheese dip tasted more like Ranch dressing than Blue Cheese, but all in all it was decent and plenty to share. 2) The Taste of the South Eggrolls was a dish of about 10 small egg rolls filled with chicken and collard greens, (but all I could taste was the collards) and served with a peanut sauce. While there was plenty to share, it just wasn't tasty! The texture was mushy and there was nothing great about the sauce. I would not recommend this dish. 3) The Cheese Plate, again generous enough to share, lots of berries, a small portion of honeycomb, some flat bread and 3 different unexciting cheeses, a parmesan, yellow cheddar and another unidentified hard white cheese. This could definitely have been made more interesting with a better variety of cheese tastes and textures. By the time we were finished with the appetizers I wasn't all that hungry so I ordered the "Salmon Cake" appetizer as an entree. I assumed since the other appetizers were so generous, this would be plenty for my meal. My assumption was incorrect. The plate arrived not with a salmon cake, but with 3 small balls about the size of a quarter and the rosemary "cookie" was a thin wafer, barely visible on the plate! The dish was overly salty, but the micro greens made a nice presentation. Very disappointed. Two of my friends ordered the Wedge Salad (one added chicken and the other added filet), one friend declared it was the worst Wedge Salad she had ever eaten, drenched in dressing that had none of the traditional bleu cheese flavor, and the chicken breast tasted as if it had been marinated in liquid smoke. The filet was cooked as ordered. Another friend ordered the Rack of Lamb, which again, the kitchen did a good job of cooking to order. My friend really enjoyed the lamb, but was surprised that he only got 3 very small chops for $42. Also, I noticed he was not the only one in the dining room that barely touched the "garlic flan", which was said to taste like "nothing". On a more positive note, one diner got the Caesar Salad with white anchovies and the filet and she said it was absolutely delicious. We did not order dessert since we were celebrating with cake at home. So if you are looking for a nice bar to have a quiet cocktail Peck & Plume is a good choice. If you are adding a meal, stick to the steaks and the Caesar salad because that seems to be one of the few things the kitchen does really well (how hard can it be)? read more

We went here recently for a graduation brunch. The hostess needed a snickers as she was abrupt and not overly friendly. After a long wait despite having reservations we were seated. Our server did a great job, despite it being a rather large party. The entrees were all decent. Not fantastic but good. Absolutely beautiful venue. Wait staff very personable and attentive. I was there for a Yelp Elite event. The heavy appetizers were tasty. I had delicious red pepper hush puppies. Perfectly prepared. The pimento cheese on a biscuit with country ham was the other item I snagged. The cheese was a large cold mound on a cold biscuit--maybe not the best representation of what they have to offer. The cucumber with shrimp that was passed around was really good. So 2 out of three when serving a large crowd, not bad. Shout out to Bedlam Vodka out of Durham. Thanks for the tasty cocktails! We were sat promptly at our reservation time, in the Study. While intimate, I did feel like we were then forgotten. I'm sure some people prefer the solitude, but the patio looked lovely... Drinks took 20 min to come out, food was a bit quicker. We had the southern egg rolls, bucatini, and shrimp & grits, all of which are PHENOMENAL. Our server was not overly attentive or friendly, but again, we were seated in a different room by ourselves. Maybe she thought we wanted to be left alone? We were a party of 5 and we all agreed: The food was not very tasty and served Luke warm. On top of this They pulled the old trick of adding 20% tip and not informing us. Eh. We ate here while we were spending a getaway night at the hotel and it seemed too convenient to pass up. We sat on the patio which is a lovely space. The service was slow and distracted. We both had the feeling our server had just stopped by on his way to his other, more important, job. He brought all the food at once which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Eating a soup, a salad, and a steak all at once is not a relaxed dining experience. My steak was really over cooked, although the flavor was good, it was leathery. The bartenders are very friendly but super slow and the drinks were just OK. We sat for a long time at a table near the bar while they continued to serve people who arrived after us but sat at the bar. Eventually my husband went up and just got drinks from the bar but it took FOREVER to get them. There was a highlight: The pineapple upside down cake. Just wow!! No wait time on a mid-day Saturday for brunch. Really had a hard time deciding what to eat because the menu spoke volumes to my appetite. The ambiance is real chill. Initially, it felt like you need to come with at least a sports coat and you'd think this place is pricey, but it's super affordable. I ended up ordering the chicken tostada, my wife ordered the chicken and waffle and my daughter had the cremé brûlée french toast. For the appetizer we had the Parmesan French fries and right after the first bite of the first fry, the entrees followed. The food took maybe 10 minutes (plus or minus). It took less time to completely consume our food because it tasted that good. The chicken tostada, was delicious from the first bite. The tortilla stayed crunchy to the last bite, that's what surprised me the most. I took my time eating it on purpose just to see how long it would take till it got soggy. The flavor on the chicken was consistent in every bite as well. I also loved that there wasn't an overwhelming amount of beans! You can taste every ingredient on the tostada and see how they work together in every bite. As you can see, I'm still raving about this place and recommending it to family and friends. Until recently, I've only ever been here for breakfast. On the breakfast: I'm not sure if the omelets here are French omelets where the egg whites first have been whipped and then folded into the yolks, or the regular kind made with milk or water or butter or with a touch of pancake batter. All I know is that I was served one of the lightest / fluffiest omelets I've had in a long time (well, maybe since the last time I made my own). The andouille sausage and the pimentos gave a nice zing. The next time, the chef was out and the sous chef was struggling to get things together. The poached eggs and fried green tomatoes were cooked well, but overall pretty bland with nothing to pull the flavors together. The third attempt was closer to the first in all respects. Of course, perhaps the company I was with helped elevate the experience (two thumbs up to Rachel O and Messer K). The downside for this place for breakfast on each visit: Early in the morning there's only one person waiting tables. Heck, she may be the only one waiting tables although she denies it. (I've never seen anyone else.) She does an okay job. If you get there early or when the place is busy, you may need to get the front desk person to call back to the restaurant. The person waiting tables is also having to do all the prep work in the back and set up for any events going on in the other room and there doesn't seem to be any one minding the door to know if someone's waiting to be seated. It's not the best setup. On a dinner visit, I broke my own rule to never order the special. It was so horrible I couldn't finish it. The fish tasted and smelled old, on the way to spoiled, it was overcooked and dry. The accompaniment, a hominy thing with an orange sauce was okay, but a weird combination of flavors. Compared with the fish, it was tasty, but that's a damned-with-faint-praise recommendation. Lesson (re-)learned. Don't order a special, or at least don't order it here. If I'm here again for a non-breakfast meal, I'll stick with the standard menu items. At least there's a chance they'll be fine. read more

Low key wanna give this restaurant a five haha.. it's really nice! The environment the food the vibe everything! The only down side is idk why it's called peck & plume not verandah, so it's kinda struggle to find this place. It's in a hotel. Anyway, i absolutely love my warm grain bowl, love my avocados, the poached eggs were amazing, they gave a little Mexican twist on the grains I think cuz it has black beans, tomato, cilantro on top but I really like the combined taste! My friends omelette is pretty fire too I love the sauce on top! they changed their ingredients for omelette each day, and Benedict egg with brioche is also amazing! My friend got the Shrimp & Grits because she absolutely loved it from the Yelp events! The frog legs were very well season, you get two for the appetizer. The Ribeye was juicy and every bite was delicious, loved the apple poblano compote on top!! Breakfast menu was outstanding. The Belgium waffle top with powder sugar and fruits was excellent, best I've had in North Carolina. The waffle was my favorite for sure! Smoked bacon had the perfect crunch. Our first time staying at the Mayton Inn! To start, the hotel is gorgeous and pure luxury. The bartenders are bar far the best we've come across in the triangle! Favorite drinks- Old Fashioned and Cherry Cordial. WOW! Our server for dinner was very polite and took good care of us, however overall the food wasn't anything I'd rave over. Based on the reviews that I have read Verandah can be hit or miss unfortunately it was a miss for my visit. Grabbed a seat at the bar with Mom and started off with a Bond Brothers Apricot Sorcery, this beer tasted like it had been on tap for a while.. not pleasant. Started off with an order of Shrimp and Grits, these were very tasty! I loved the bites that I got with the smoked bacon and tomatoes, I just wish there was a tiny bit more of the grits but this was a starter. For entrees I went with the Crab Cakes and Mom went with an order of the Ashley Farms Free Range Chicken. -Crab Cakes: just not a fan of the flavor of the crab cake, the two crab cakes were served over cabbage, asparagus and fingerling potatoes with a red pepper remoulade. - Chicken: We were both extremely excited for this dish after seeing pictures but it was a disappointment. The tomatoes and potatoes were bland, the asparagus was overcooked and parts of the chicken were dry. I struggled between 2.5 and 3 for my experience at Verandah, it was not worth the price. Perhaps this is a brunch spot that I would enjoy? I guess we will find out. read more
