We went to Peggs this morning and had very below average food. I ordered the eggs Benedict. The egg yolk was hard. The Hollandaise sauce did not taste good at all. The hash browns I ordered as a side were mushy and cold. In fact the whole plate of food was luke warm at best . We also ordered a waffle. Taste was good but was served cold. The coffee was great. And our server Katie was great! That's about it. We would not come back to dine in the future. read more

We were staying at a nearby hotel and happened upon this spot. While there was no wait, I loved the outside seating and coffee available for when there is one! My husband had a waffle with fruit and the cup of fruit was quite small and anemic looking. I wasn't too hungry, and opted for a cinnamon roll to munch on through the day. Nothing special about the food here that it's worth waiting for 45 mins to be seated, and another 1hr for food to come out. Wait staff did not apprise us of the long wait and in fact an adjacent table who came after us got food before us! Don't come here if you're in a hurry/hungry or have little kids with you. Good breakfast and a nice spot in downtown South Bend. Busy but not packed in too tight, was comfortably spaced from other tables. I ordered the breakfast tacos which were great, especially loved the double corn tortilla shells that were well toasted. Filled with plenty of eggs, chorizo, scallions, sour cream and salsa. Got a side of sweet potato fries which were thick and nicely fried. My wife got an omelet with toast and yogurt which isn't anything special but was good. Minor detail but the iced tea was pretty weak in flavor and not great. Disappointing because I love unsweet tea but again, being picky. Service was nice and pretty quick for the place having every table full. A lot of other dishes coming out of the kitchen looked intriguing so will definitely return to try some out. read more

I can't even. I only went the one time and doubt I can stomach going back a second time but here is my review anyway. Let's start with the back story of Pegg's: So Pegg's, before it was Pegg's, run by a woman named Peg (go figure) used to be part of the franchise Le Peep. It was at that time SOO good and one of my favorite places to eat breakfast. Then Peg decided to break out onto her own. As I'm sure it is part of the "rules" of leaving the franchise, she could no longer make my favorite dish or any of the other signature Le Peep dishes from the former menu. So she created a new menu to go with the new Pegg's. Fine. Make perfect sense. However, I wonder how someone who ran a successful franchise (Le Peep) for so many years and made thousands of breakfast dishes over those many years could make such horrible breakfast food after transitioning to her new restaurant. Anway, here's more specifics on my one trip. I ordered two eggs over-hard, with breakfast potatoes (asked them to be extra crisp) and breakfast sausage links. The eggs were fine. The potatoes were not crispy in any way, shape or form which is frustrating but not the end of the world. But the sausage? The sausage was like NO OTHER breakfast sausage at ANY other restaurant in the world. I'm not sure it should even qualify as breakfast sausage. It was GRAY. Like a weird, unnatural gray color and it's flavor was about the same. It was gamey and flavorless and the texture was mealy. It was inedible. I flagged the waitress over and asked for bacon instead of the sausage. She offered to remake the whole meal and I said it was fine but just please bring me bacon extra crispy. The bacon arrived in less than a minute and a half. It is impossible to make crispy bacon that fast. Though the bacon appeared like it would be crispy and delicious it was more chewy and tough like beef-jerky. I deduced that the texture of the bacon along with the speed with which it arrived at my table must mean that they have one of those metal troughs with heat under it like at buffet places. I think they just precooked a boat-load of bacon ahead of the breakfast rush to save time. Well, that's just ridiculous and makes for bad-tasting bacon. I ended up eating only the eggs. Not very filling. On a more positive note, the wait staff is amazing and the coffee is great. So there's that. Sadly, coffee and waiters don't satiate my breakfast needs therefore, I won't be going back. ~R.I.P. Le Peep~ Side note: I just read another review that said that Peg was locally sourcing as much of her menu as possible. I think she may want to rethink that when it comes to her meat products. That sausage and beef-jerky-like bacon have no business being a side dish for human consumption. read more

Chicken and Waffles. The waffle was good with big chunk a of pearl sugar ready to advance you towards diabetes. The issue I had was the chicken. There were a few issues. First it was a multi muscle breaded breast. For $.25 more they could have been serving a whole muscle product that wouldn't have been spongy. They also cut the chicken before they fried it drying out those cut edges. The presentation was great. The waffle was great. The chicken was garbage and this is why they only get two stars. The first time that my family and I ate at Peggs we became instant fans. We were hunting for a breakfast spot that offered tried and true breakfast dishes but also had creative options. The staff is extremely friendly and service is prompt. I have enjoyed their pancakes, waffle, traditional eggs/hash browns/sausage/toast meal and biscuits and gravy...but their eggs Benedict options are special. Traditional Bennie, Irish Bennie or California Bennie...all are good! I've also had the breakfast tacos and French toast and have yet to be disappointed. I went here last Saturday. Got there about 9:00 and was sat right away. I never remember to take pictures of my food but it was beautiful and DELICIOUS! I had the crab cake eggs Benedict. I can honestly say it was one of the most delicious meals I have ever had! It was two homemade crab cakes with so much real crab and two perfectly poached eggs with a fabulous hollandaise sauce. I got a side of hash browns that were cooked to perfection. Now here is the kicker. It was only $10.00! My friend got eggs in a basket, which was only $6.00! breakfast today with my wife. this place has great charm. greeted with a smile. no waiting, right to a table. just a few minutes and waitress arrived. very pleasant and a smile. we ordered coffee to drink. ice water was already on the table with two glasses. I really like that she left the pot on the table after pouring our coffee. I had the traditional eggs benedict and my wife had Fred's home breakfast. eggs, hash browns, choice of breads or english muffin and one side. she got a nice amount of food. she did feel the hash browns were just a little greasy. the eggs benedict were tasty. fruit for my side. just a little early for the cantaloupe. not a lot of taste. overall a good experience. we will certainly eat here again. This used to be called Le Peep, a semi regional restaurant with locations in other states. A few years ago the restaurant manager purchased the naming rights to the restaurant and has since made it her own, crafting a new menu that appeals to all the local history and culture of South Bend. This is definitely our favorite place for breakfast in all of St. Joseph County. Have been here over a dozen times and have never had a bad experience. We tend to go in off-peak times, usually during the weekdays since we work weekends. Our meals are typically around $10 or less, the service is always speedy and friendly, and there is a decent variety of breakfast and brunch plates. This is the premier spot for breakfast in South Bend in my humble opinion. read more

I came to Pegg's for the first time yesterday to meet up with an old friend. I was only there on the basis of her suggestion, but I soon found out what I had been missing. The coffee was a near-perfect Irish roast. I ordered the breakfast tacos with hash browns on the side. The tacos (you get three) were loaded with flavor and you do not get cheated on the portion. The hash browns had bits of bacon and cheese melted over top. They were so good, it gave me a whole new appreciation for hash browns. It's a busy joint (at least on Saturdays), so I would recommend making a reservation the day before if you don't want to wait 30 minutes (they do not take same day reservations). The staff is friendly, attentive, and efficient. My wife was out of town, so she couldn't join us. Her and I had been saying that we'd like to find a great breakfast spot in town.
