We dined there today for lunch. The cafe looks quite refreshed with new paint and new dining layout. The food was nice just the same just a little on the cold side, mains and breads. Service was just fine. No more paper tickets at the table which we would have preferred but... We asked and there is a new owner and yes there is. They are serving up a Mexican inspired weekend brunch menu that should draw in more customers. This was a smokey little icon of Balch Springs for a long time. The food was alright but the waitress is the cashier my four visits i had the same thing your bill has the one main item on it and price. You hand over the bill the register has no display and there no receipt given. All four visits there was a differences of three to four dollars. Your enter the price that is not imputed into the register. The same waitress and cashier counts her draw and the total is an overage. Where do you think the overage goes. read more

NO MORE SMOKING ALLOWED! I've been here a few times before, but I would try to avoid the place just because of the smoking they allowed. But not anymore! Smoking and vaping are not allowed in the restaurant at all now! My husband wanted to stop by here for a Sunday breakfast, I was skeptical, but we did and glad we did! It was a bit filled than what I remember it being. We were told they did lose alot of the regulars that smoked, but do have more that come in now. The place was definitely filled. Looks as if they did a little sprucing up of the place as well. I am sensitive to the cigarette smell and the place did not have any odor of cigarette. Food was great, orange juice was great and the coffee was yummy! It was super nice to enjoy a nice meal without the nauseating smell of cigarette smoke! Thank you Peggy's! Ok so hear me out this is like walking into an old school diner where they allow smoking on one side and non smoking on the other. To some it's a turnoff but hey we dealt with it and considering that the quality of our air outside in texas is just as worse. So we had the pleasure of being served by Mrs. Peggy herself and she was so sweet and told us all about her menu items. So they serve breakfast and lunch and I got the skillet and it was a huge portion that I was no it able to finish it. The service was great the food was good and yeah I had to put up with some smokers but they were friendly, everyone in there was friendly. We walked an in guest and staff a greeted us. The burgers do look good though I'm not going to lie. I seen one going out when I was leaving and I was like hmmmm. Great food food all around. Really enjoyed the "Mexican" skillet breakfast with a pancake. The hospitality was okay but my main issue with my experience is the place doesn't seem to be very Covid-friendly especially with all the coughing go on due to it being smoker-friendly (which I'm indifferent to usually). I had high hopes for this place, but alas they were quickly dashed! This is a local hangout and seems to be very popular! There are no frills and that is fine with me because there is a lot of character from the staff to the decor. The menus appear to be from the 60s and are worn but contain many choices! The walls are dingy and haven't been painted in decades! The waitresses were "down home" friendly! The food was okay although the hash browns were sloppy with grease. The biggest negative was the smoke! Yes they allowed smoking and it seemed that every local lit up once they had finished eating! Everytime I'm in Mesquite, I demand that we eat here. Marie is the nicest server and always knows just what we want. My parents live in Mesquite and frequent there, but she recognizes me all the way from Chicago. I get the Breakfast Special which is 2 eggs, 2 sausage patties (you can get 2 slices of bacon) and two biscuits with a little bowl of some of the best gravy I've ever had. The biscuits are soft, the gravy is hot. Marie keeps the coffee coming. Peggy, the owner, is always around and friendly. It's filled with locals, most of whom I'm sure don't even know what a yelp is, but they know good country cooking. I can only give one star. Reason is I ordered the senior stuffed bell pepper, Pinto's and spice apples. The stuffed bell pepper was room temperature, Pinto's were dry without any juice or the desired thick bean gravy. My wife ordered breakfast. Hash browns were cold, bacon seemed to have been cooked many hours before. Her toast took three requests. We the toast arrived, it had sat long enough it had gotten hard. I love this place - a good old mom and pop café; special menu for the day with various meats and vegetables to choose from - cakes - pies. Karaoke on Monday nights. Live band other nights. They do close at 6:00 on Thursdays. I love seeing the same people when I go there. I don't even know their names, but they seem kind of like family. If i could leave a no stars review i definitely would. Me and my gf pass this place often and wondered if the breakfast was any good so today we decided to try it. We walk in and the place is empty. We sit down and we were instantly attacked by a bunch of flies but we decided to stay anyway for some odd reason. Then as we waited for the food we ordered flies kept Landing on us and flying around our table and faces so we decide to get the food and drinks to go. By the way we hadn't consumed anything from them the entire time we were there. So as we're at the register about to pay the waitress tells us our total is 24 dollars. Now my meal was 8 dollars and my gf meal was 6 dollars plus 4 dollars in drinks plus tax that should have been 18 dollars. So we tell her about her mistake in the math and she tries to argue us down saying that we were wrong so at that point I'm completely fed up so we said that we didn't want anything at all and just wanted the money back that we paid. And the lady tells us that we can't have our money back so after telling her off in the most politec way i could fathom she enough gives us our money back and tells us that god is gonna get us for doing them like that.
