He switch my wife straw with her refill and used his naked hand and yelled when we requested a new straw and told her to use the same straw he just touched. We immediately left and will never return. TLDR : solid American Chinese food place. I haven't eaten inside the restaurant in a while but always get the carry out by the pound option. Essentially you go to the buffet get what you want, they weigh your food and then you pay based on the lb. As of today I paid around 6.50 for a little over a lb of food. If you want American Chinese this place does a solid job of it. Got all your classic American dishes in their glory. The food always hits the spot when I'm craving it so hats off to them. Pretty uninspiring: your typical Chinese buffet. Food wise, it's not terrible (aka I haven't gotten sick from eating here so it's safe enough) and they have your typical Chinese buffet options like bananas with mystery red sauce, frogs legs, beyond mediocre sushi, soups, fried everything (my favorite being cream cheese wontons), meat on a stick, fried noodles/rice, etc. They had a few items that I was happy to find that not every buffet has (but most good ones will) including crawfish and duck. Service is pretty bad. There were a few times where our dirty plates didn't get cleared from the table and so we had to jenga-stack them off to the side to make room for more plates. The waiter we had just seemed overall annoyed to serve us and we had to flag him down a few times to bring us napkins as well. You can get food to go here priced by weight which doesn't seem like a terrible option, but dining in is probably better since is pretty cheap as dinner is only around $12. It's not the cheapest meal in the Iowa City area, but for all-you-can-eat it's not bad. read more

I'll start by saying that Peking Buffet was one of our favorite places to eat, we've eaten there countless times. We have never had an issue but the last time we were there was probably a year or so ago. We decided to stop in around 8:00 pm tonight for a later dinner (although it was still two hours before closing). This visit was probably the worst restaurant experience I have EVER had in my life. First, we are seated at our table and the wall next to the booth was filthy. It was literally covered in something, there were even chunks of something on the wall. The waiter took our drink orders and brought them without ever saying a word to us. The entire time we were there, he was either rolling up silverware or sitting and eating, which is fine but he never came back to our table until we were done. No drink refills, no checking in, nothing. Second, ALL of the food was either extremely old or empty. Literally 3/4 of the trays were completely empty and were never refilled while we were there. Almost every single dish that had any meat in it was gone. I ate corn, cold fried rice that was hard from sitting out for so long, and a hard donut. I have never left a buffet feeling hungry before but there was nothing to eat and everything I did have was questionable. With that much time until closing, they should have been refilling things. It wasn't super busy by any means but there were several other people there. There were many times that we saw cooks come out and look things over but nothing else ever came out. The icing on the cake was when our waiter brought the check. We paid and decided not to tip. I have never NOT tipped someone and am usually very forgiving, but with the combination of all of the issues we had, I just couldn't bring myself to spend anything else there. Before we could even get up, he came over to check the receipt for a tip. When he saw that we didn't leave one, he got very obviously angry. He said "No tip?!" and proceeded to throw some dishes into a bin and yelled at us from our table to the door. We will NOT be coming back. This was a completely ridiculous experience. After a long wait this place finally opened. We waited in line for about 20-30 minutes and I felt like it was worth it. The food was hot and it was filled up constantly, all my favorites were pretty good and our server made sure glasses were full and plates were cleared. If you are craving chinese buffet in Iowa City/Coralville this is the place to go. For the people that are complaining about how "dirty" it may have been I would cut these people some slack, this place has had lines coming out the door for 3 freaking days, I'm pretty sure they had a hard time keeping up with the demand and when I was there it really didn't seem dirty at all to me. Very apprehensive at first since I have high expectations coming from California, a melting pot of cuisines-- plus other asian food joints around town have not really satisfied our asian food cravings. But... this place is not that bad. Food was fresh and nothing tasted bad, maybe a few items that were just 'okay'. Hubs really, really liked their crab rangoons and Mongolian Beef while I really enjoyed their BBQ chicken and as weird as it sounds, I really enjoyed their tiny hotdog slices wrapped in biscuit dough. They have tons of meat dishes -- almost too much and their sushi/rolls are a little better than your supermarket sushi, but probably not something you want to stuff your face with since they use tons of rice and very little filling. I'd stay away from the ice cream. We saw kids scooping their own ice cream and seeing their sleeves/arms rub up against the ice cream tubs, and then licking their hands, even using their hands to push the ice cream from the scooper to their bowls -- enough to make you cringe a little. For the price, not bad. It satisfied our asian food cravings and we will most likely be back. read more

Well, what can one say about the grossest buffet I've ever been too. The food was tasteless the chicken "parts" they used in their food contained a large amount of chewy gristle and cartilage. The food generally had funky flavor. The best was the view from our table of a buss station where the wait staff emptied uneaten food from plates into troughs and dumped silver ware into buckets. In this same little garbage dump room is where wait staff filled drinks right next to the garbage. All so VERY appetizing. Never again! I mentioned to the cashier about the gross situation she seemed very surprised, but she was very unfriendly when we entered preferring to break coins unit the till and count money rather than seat us or even offer a greeting. This place has gone down in all categories. You can tell the staff don't really care anymore. The chairs are torn, walls are dirty and their is food all over the ground. I noticed that the sushi was just left there and no one was there to check on it. I feel like someone is going to get sick if they don't manage the sushi. When Peking Buffet opened it was great but now I don't know how long it's gonna stay open. You would think that being the only Chinese Buffet in town they would try to capitalize since I feel like there would be a demand for it but at this rate it's not looking good. Average but better than they were before the flood and better than the place across the intersection. The only dish I enjoyed was the honey chicken. The other dishes were all cold which is why I rate it 2 stars instead of three. If the food was the appropriate temperature it is at least average. The service was above average. I used to love Peking Buffet but things have changed. The last time I ate here, I visited two hours before they were supposed to close, so I was pretty shocked when almost everything was gone and empty pans were not being replaced. Many of my favorites were empty and the rest of the choices seemed like they had been sitting out for quite some time. Nothing was refilled the entire time I was there, about an hour or so. I ended up settling for whatever I could get while the waiter sat at a table and ate his own meal--never once checking in to see if I needed a drink refill. The booth I sat in was dirty and there were handprints and food on the wall right next to me. The worst part about my experience wasn't even about the food or cleanliness either--as I was getting ready to leave, before I even got up from my seat, my waiter came to the table to check and see if I had left him a tip. When he saw that I hadn't, he cursed at me and followed me all the way out of the restaurant. I always leave a good tip, I don't think I have ever not tipped, so the fact that I didn't at all really says something about this place. I did not enjoy the food or being harassed for not tipping my awful waiter. After going home and reading some other recent reviews and inspection notes for this restaurant, I am absolutely sure that I will not be returning, period. read more

Its not even cheap Chinese buffet. $11.50+ a head for subpar americanized Chinese buffet. You get charged dinner price for lunch hours. The sodas are terrible tasting. The place is huge and I don't have any complaints about the staff but the food just wasn't that great. I've been here twice, a week apart. The first time around 5pm on a Friday wasn't bad. The Mai Fun and chicken teriyaki sticks were pretty darned good. The second time I came with my parents and my mom was not having it. The honey, general and bbq chicken weren't fresh. The Mai Fun tasted stale and off. Peking Buffet just charges too much for subpar food. $40 for 3 people better have some decent buffet quality food and they can't even do that. Before I get started I would like to say I am a Chinese food enthusiast, therefor in my book there is no such thing as bad Chinese food. Never have I ever had an uncomfortable experience eating out, it is suppose to be a luxury. I go for the Peking duck. I have no idea how they get the skin so crispy, but I would never question miracles. Other buffet items are typical of Iowa Chinese buffets, but the quality and preparation is several notches higher than most everywhere else. We miss the old location before the floods. The atmosphere is hard to place. Certainly clean. Bright. Neon-y? Like many reviews have said, this is good stomach paste. Careful about coming in at off hours (any buffet for that matter), when who knows how long the food's been under the lamps. Cantonese shrimp, crab rangoon, pot stickers are my favorite. Sometimes you get lucky and they have all you can eat mangoes on the fruit counter! IMO, stay away from the sushi - it's mealy rice is comparable to HyVee's. Ok, I agree with Lucy G. This is a buffet in a smallish city in Iowa--I'm not expecting gourmet deliciousness or authenticity. That said, when I'm stuck at Heartland Inn due to flight cancellations with a blizzard warning in effect, Peking Buffet is exceptionally awesome! I just finished spending an hour there. The staff showed up and were fairly friendly despite the dismal weather, and the sushi was being made fresh. I had some sushi, cucumber salad, peel and eat shrimp and mussels to start. Then I went back for rice, shrimp and veggies, some noodles, and sauteed green beans. These were all pretty good. I would stay away from the potstickers and crab rangoon on any future visit. I ended my meal with mint chocolate chip ice cream. Overall, I was happy--it was good to get out of the hotel room! read more

The presentation, which was nice, did not match the taste. The food could be described as uninspired Chinese/American, and little to none of it was fresh. We were never given refills on the sodas we paid for, and our plates were not cleared for an extended period of time. Positives: nice ambience, lots of room in this restaurant. There were many dishes, and many of them were fried. Our waiter wasn't around much, but the staff generally was nice. I've never been so frustrated writing a review but this place sucked. Worse than sucked. All of our eating utensils were plastic!, the food was old, dry, and cold. Tasted like we were eating 5-6 hour food. Not only that when we first went up there were 0 options. Almost everything was gone or looked to gross to get. We grabbed what little we could and went back to our table hoping sitting for a minute and would give us time for them to bring out new food. We were there for a min and got back up to when we got the food there was very little hits and a lot a lot a lot of misses. It was probably the worst buffet I've ever been too. Not only that we had a waitress that stared at us the whole time and when we looked at her she'd go into the kitchen and touch a few things and then come back out and stand next to the wall staring again. Not only that she stared so hard at us but couldn't pick up on the fact we didn't receive a refill the whole hour we were there. We had to stop her and tell her we were done. we went to go pay and had two separate checks and a friends went out to grab his card and she asked where he went and we told her to grab his card if we were able to pay for our bill as she's walking around with our money in her hand. She calls over the staring waitress and they're pointing and talking about us right in front of us. I complained to her and she kept saying there was no way for me to talk to anyone about the horrible experience I had that I'd have to keep calling back until I got a hold of someone. It was freaking ridiculous. Went to eat there tonight cause I didn't really feel like cooking and wanted Chinese. Now I usually have a pretty experience here but tonight I gotta say was one of the worst ever. The server I had was a older guy not sure exactly how old he was but had a attitude the whole time i was there with me. came half way across from were I was sitting to ask me what I was drinking instead of coming to the table to ask properly. and when i couldn't hear him and said I'm sorry very nicely he copped an attitude and asked me again. when he was walking away he rolled his eyes like it was an inconvenience for me to be at one of his tables. I found a dirty fork and of course the girls at the front desk were really nice and let me have another set of silverware and when i went to give him the fork cause he was standing at the entrance to the server area he literally snatched it out of my hand like i was being a bother and and said yeah yeah to me. when i went to pay the girl at the front desk took my money and i took my change and walked out. the server got absolutely nothing from me. and when i took my change he was standing behind the counter mean mugging me giving me a dirty look because i didn't leave a tip for him. The customer service when we first walked in was great, the front counter woman was cheerful and sweet. We ate and proceeded to pay our bill, giving exact change with the intent to gather the tip and leave it on the table, however; the waiter yanked the receipt from my hand and threw my change down into the initial check tray. He was horribly rude. Prior to this, we were not asked to fill our water until we were finished with our meals. After we got up to leave, now having decided not to leave a tip due to his incredibly rude behavior, the waiter began to insult us in his native language. He rolled his eyes, began to act very very immature and incredibly rude. He looked us up and down and was insulting us as we left. We won't return. Food was mediocre, as well. read more

The buffet has like a gazillion options including sushi, hibachi grill, fruits and some American dishes apart from traditional Chinese food. The steamed buns were fluffy and delectable. Didn't really enjoy the noodles or rice and couple of chicken dishes like honey and sesame chicken. But there are still lots of other options. I was very disappointed when I went yesterday. first of all there were flies everywhere, all over the susi and all over the other food. The food was nasty as well. the chicken was very cold, the rice was hard, and everything tastes the same like it was fried in the same fryer. the wait staff were also horrible, they just stood by the wall and laughed and played around with the other staff. I actually saw a young lady and a young man that worked there playing with each other physically, and not helping anyone. when we got to our table the waitstaff only came back once to get the plates, but not asking if we needed a refill with our drinks. the salad dressing was not labed, so you didn't know for sure what it was. The susi rolls did not have a lable on them either, so you did't know what you were eating. I will NEVER come back to Peking Buffet. and I will tell all of my friends not to go there either. Normally it's a good experience. But it seems the night waiter has a attitude, He, if he doesn't get the tip he wants, will curse at you. And because of that being my last experience there I have declined to eat there anymore, it is one of my favorite places to have chinese. but I don't go out to eat to be called names by the wait staff.
