So this place was rebuilt after a terrible car accident a few months ago, I'm so glad to see them back up and running! Reasonably priced, delicious dumplings. Multiple options for filling and toppings! And also the cutest little corner spot. I know they're working on remodeling, but prior to the accident they had board games and a record player where you could go ahead and put on whatever record you wanted to enjoy and sit around and play games with the people you love. I come down here periodically for lunch if I have enough time on my break. Pel'meni is located directly across from the Captain Cook Hotel on the corner of K St. and 5th Ave in downtown. The restaurant was closed for a period of time after a terrible accident earlier this year involving a truck. The entire storefront on the 5th Ave side was heavily damaged, but after a few months and a lot of support from the community, they reopened and the business is doing well again. The seating area looks good as new and the record collection complete with vinyl for anyone to play is back, but the stylus was broken on my most recent visit. Hopefully, they had it replaced so that customers can start playing vinyl again. The Dumplings are always delicious and made to order with Potato or Beef and your choice of toppings: Butter, Curry, Hot Sauce, Cilantro, or everything on the list! One of the more reasonably priced places in the downtown area. The owners and the employees are always super nice and they deserve the support they need after a terrible start to the year. read more

Who doesn't love little pockets of simple deliciousness? I remember getting these a long time ago (2012ish??) and was happy to see this spot pop up. It just took me a while to swing by. The dumplings were perfect bit sizes with flavorful toppings and a tasty 1/2 piece of rye. The ambiance is very casual with cozy touches, a record player with many vinyls to choose from and string lights. Service was very friendly. I wish they had double portion containers because I saw a lot of people ordering two servings and an option for reusable dish wear. Delicious and very fast! You can't go wrong with either option but I prefer the Beef with EVERYTHING (sans rye bread). Mix about 1/2 a container of sour cream (from their cooler- proportioned) in with all the "everything" and it makes a delicious creamy tangy sauce. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but since I'm Russian and know well what good pelmeni should taste like, I can't leave a positive review for this place. The venue itself is nice, and the lady at the counter was polite and very pleasant. But these pelmeni can't be called good by any means. They are below average, nothing special. I think this business could use a little attention, despite the fact that the Pelmenis are fantastic. The space is quite basic inside, large and open. Not really decorated in the Anchorage style as such, which is a lot of paintings, and Alaskiana all over the walls. Tables are quite spread out. Napkins are provided on the table in mismatched containers, and there's no silverware, it's plastic spoons. There is a very basic menu - a choice of beef or potato pelmeni, and the choice is in your toppings. The recommendation is "everything" ie cilantro, butter, curry, and hot sauce, or you can choose from those. There's a fridge with cans of soda, and sour cream dressing in the bottom, for your pelmenis. You also have the option to put on a record, on the turntable while you watch the guy cook the pelmenis or watch life go by out the large windows. It's not a huge collection of records but there is a few. I do like the old school touch, rather than "oh, here's my playlist" What comes to the table is a small styrofoam container of pelmenis, ready dressed, and with a half slice of dark rye, or maybe pumpernickel bread. This filled me with dismay, because i am a girl of large appetites, and i could easily have eaten 2 of these containers. I think a small choice of sides would improve the offerings immensely. I am not in any way disrespecting how delicious the pelmenis were. They were stupendous, and full of flavour, i got potato with "everything" on top, and he got beef with the curry sauce. He tasted mine and said he wished he got everything. I was inhaling these things so fast. I also recommend everything on top. It was banging!!! If there were some french fries, or a salad on offer with these, I'd have been a happy girl, well i was a happy girl, but i was still a bit hungry happy girl afterward. A few small touches would elevate this place to 5 stars. But I'm not sure if this is early days for them, if so, plenty of time to polish things up a little. I recall going to Pel Meni many years ago, and a different location. I happened to drive by this spot one night on my at back from the cabin, it was open late, the lights were on and it looked super inviting. I FINALLY got to stop by and see what this place is all about....:and I ADORE it! TBH it didn't really feel like I was in Anchorage anymore, and it was a nice vibe. The dumplings were fantastic, I asked the guy prepping the food to make me his favorites and he did not disappoint. The place was BUSY, lots of people coming and going, a definite spot for the bar hoppers. The hidden gem of this little dumpling spot though.....is 100% the record collection! As soon as the record playing was done I was told it was cool to put anything I wanted on. I browsed the collection and picked out a few to choose from when it was my turn. Better than a jukebox!! My other half loves pel'meni, so we were excited to try out this new location exclusively devoted to pel'meni. At this time they've only had a soft opening which I discovered in a blurb in the local paper. We figured it was a good sign when we walked up and there was a line developing. The interior is humble, order at the counter, grab a soda, seat yourself and wait for them to call your order. They have a choice of beef or potato dumplings with a variety of toppings for $8 add a soda for a dollar. I suspect this business will be successful due to its proximity to the courthouse and downtown hotels. A meal downtown under $10 including a drink is hard to find. Cool factor note that gains them a half star- THEY HAVE A VINYL RECORD PLAYER !!! As far as quality goes, I'll be honest, I've had better. They were just OK, both the pel'meni truck and the book store are better. And they serve them in STYROFOAM which considering our planet is dying is a huge turnoff. We'll probably pop back in after they are officially open in the future. For the time being I give them a 3.5. Haven't had these dumplings before but have wanted to try. We always talk about it when we are downtown and we finally came. They open at 11:30 and we were the only ones there besides a guy getting them to go. We talked with the lady working and the dumplings are made in Seattle and shipped here, Sitka, and Juneau all the same dumplings but are "franchises" so not the same owner necessarily. The one in Juneau is always busy and this location just doesn't get the same traffic. We got one order of each, potato and beef. You get a bunch since they are small "nuggets" Russian style. We got all toppings on both but there was a lot of curry and the hot sauce was hot for me so I opted one to have no curry and sauce on the side. You can get butter, parsley, hot sauce, and curry. I didn't mind the curry but the lady really caked it on, and I dont think we actually got any parsley on either maybe they didn't have any. Comes with rye bread also. Really the only thing y put can eat here is dumplings so do t expect a variety of anything. The place was decorated nicely with red walls and stars hanging from the ceiling. There was a record player and a bunch of records. Wasn't playing, however the music that was on was very loud and not family friendly... the lady would have changed or lowered if asked probly. If you've never tried dumplings, or these dumplings, give them a chance! Took 10-15 minutes to cook them so could be a grab and go easy lunch. read more

Is you remember Nane's Pelmenis on 4th Ave at 3am (if you know; you know!), this place is even better! When you walk in it's an inviting atmosphere with lots of seating, a drink cooler and a record collection. There's no menu or prices to be seen which can be a little jilting at first, but an order of dumplings is now $9.00 and the choices are potato or beef and comes with a slice of bread. Toppings you can ask for are butter, vinegar-hot sauce, curry powder, cilantro and sour cream (get the works!). With the sour cream someone who doesn't like spicy can probably even tolerate the heat. Drinks are now $2. The portion is very filling. I heard the owner say they were open till 3am. I came on a drizzly day after walking around downtown and this warmed me right up. We we stopped by it was the middle of the day, beautiful waether, and the place was empty. WE took our dumplings outside and ate on the public bench there. The ambience inside was dead, and there was not attractive place to sit outside. I can't imagine it when full of tourists. While we ate a delivery of a palette of boxes of frozen dumplings arrived. There isn't much to cooking these up, they are already done and just get deep fried. Not much more fancy than fast food. THe dumplings themselves were good, but not something I'd seek out again. We have made perogies before, and these were similar, with a doughy pasta shell and a mix of seasoned potatoes or meat as a filling.
