This is one of my favorite restaurant, and for so many reasons. The service is always top-notch, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. If you prefer dining outside, the ocean views with Catalina Island in the background are absolutely spectacular. If you're in a more casual mood, you can sit at the bar after a round of golf, watch a game, and enjoy a great meal. This restaurant truly offers every kind of ambiance. We've celebrated so many special moments here-- Christmas dinner with partners, casual dinners with friends, watching FIFA World cup and golf, and evenings outside enjoying the sunset. My absolute favorite time to visit is Easter. The brunch is incredible! It's more than just a meal--it's an experience. The food displays and entertainment are completely over the top. Yes, it's extravagant and may not be for everyone, but to us, it's one of Orange County's true gems. The food is consistently outstanding. One time, everyone at our table ordered the Chilean sea bass--every single person. That's how good it is. If you haven't tried it yet, you'll understand why after your first bite. The staff greeted us as we entered and the seating outside came with a lovely sunset view of the Pacific Ocean. Not overly pretentious as the Monarch Beach. Elevated in a quiet and sophisticated way that allows you to dress up but also relaxed. Drinks are lovely. We shared appetizers and then had the short rib and jidori chicken. Both solid choices and the dessert is seasonal and we enjoyed strawberry shortcake and an extra surprise strawberry dish at the end from the kitchen which was thoughtful and unexpected. The one thing that left me uncomfortable was the older white manager name Gerald Small who spent his time walking around the restaurant, checking in on nearly every table--but never once made his way to ours. I can't help but wonder whether there was a racial element to the difference in attention, and unfortunately, that feeling lingered throughout an otherwise wonderful experience. The cocktails and food were also surprisingly good. Here's what we tried 1. Newport salad: lettuce and endive greens with Humboldt fog (goat cheese), grapes, and pecan crunches. May add protein for extra (chicken, salmon, iron steak, shrimp). All of this deliciousness seasoned with light fig vinaigrette. Sooo good. 2. Fromaggi: wood fire thin crust pizza (perfect thickness with just amount of crunch). White sauce with mozzarella, parmigiana reggiano, creamy ricotta, and 24 month aged havarti. Excellent. Please order 3. Ginger fizz: gin, ginger beer, lemon, and rosemary syrup. Very light and refreshing and not strong. 4. Montespresso: amaro Montenegro, espresso and Raspberry (hint of raspberry-so good) 5 Affrogato with two shots of espresso: just perfect. Very good food, excellent service and beautiful venue. A friend gave me a recommendation to check this place out. I made a reservation on Open Table although it was a solo venture as I'm currently traveling for work. The view to the water from the patio is stunning. The restaurant itself is on a golf course but has very decadent retro vibes with the decor and ambiance. I ordered an old fashioned to start and I was pleased that their well Whiskey was Buffalo Trace. I asked for a recommendation on what their most popular dishes were and it was between a pasta dish and the Chilean Sea Bass. I chose the sea bass because I needed something a little lighter for dinner. The fish was seasoned and cooked perfectly, it was served with forbidden rice, pickled shallots with a coconut beurre blanc that was a lovely accompaniment. Highly recommend. They aren't open late so try to get an early dinner reservation if it's possible. Service is top tier as well. read more

To start off, the positives! I really recommend the caviar fries. If I were to only get one thing on the menu, it would definitely be that. The cream and the sauce goes well with the caviar and fries. I also loved the starter bread with the sweet butter so much! I asked if I could get a box togo and our server gave us more new bread to take home; honestly, I was so happy! For the flatbread, I recommend the wild mushroom one! We ordered both of the flatbreads on the menu to try, and I actually love cheese, but the cheese on fromaggi tasted a bit more plain and had less flavor. The sausage cavatelli was just okay, and I thought that the dough was a bit too thick and chewy. The chicken was a bit disappointing because the chicken was too dry. The mashed potatoes in the chicken however were great, and the dish was flavored amazingly. The service was great and our servers upon multiple times going were warm and friendly, offering to help us take pictures and asking if the food was good. The second time however, the wait for our food took nearly 45-50 minutes which surprised me a bit. We didn't get updated on when the food was coming. We got our caviar fries really quickly and after finishing had to wait another 35 minutes before our food came. While we were enjoying our caviar fries, a couple was seated next to us and had ordered a starter and a main course. Absolutely amazing experience here and we caught the beautiful sunset since we sat outside! We had a total girl dinner and got dirty martinis with the caviar and fries, and it was the perfect touch with our drinks. Service was amazing and prompt, although a bit slow in the beginning. Our server, Valentina, was exceptional and also made great recommendations. We also decided to get the carpaccio and tableside mushroom risotto (made to order in a huge Parmesan wheel) and it was delicious! I booked this place online because my daughter wanted to celebrate her birthday and have steak by the ocean. I also wanted to view the sunset. I was having a hard time booking a place because we had a group of five people. It's an odd number and most waterfront places only would seat with reservations with two people or four people. Thankfully, I booked this place and it worked out. I ordered the chicken with the chimichurri. My husband ordered the burger. My other daughter ordered the Chilean sea bass. My other daughter ordered the pizza. The birthday girl ordered the steak (the fillet mignon). We also enjoyed those delicious bread rolls. We also ordered two coffees and crème brûlée. The grounds are beautiful, as is the restaurant. We sat outside for lunch in hopes of a nice view. The food was pricey and not worth what we paid for it. The pretzel was dry. The lobster roll was ok but too small for $40. The gnocchi was overdone and the prawns were undercooked. It was quite a a disappointing meal, especially given how much we spent. Came here for Father's Day with my dad and was blown away! One of our server's Gretchen was phenomenal. She is MADE for the hospitality industry and if she goes on and opens her own restaurant or becomes the manager here, I will come so frequently because you can jus tell she deeply cares for her clients and guests! The food was delicious (best Caesar salad I have had in quite some time!) It is a beautiful space and at lunch it was very well lit and felt inviting! Two things to keep in mind: I was really surprised how large the restrooms were....but with only two stalls it does seem like they could have added more. Especially when I didn't see a changing table anywhere so mother's would need space to handle that. The valet is also $25 per car. I paid cash and so did the other person is saw so I'm not sure if they take cards but just something to be prepared for. I saw that they have an ATM near the bathrooms so that could be helpful for those who may not carry cash! We hadn't been back in a while, but will now be adding it to our rotation, especially if we can request Gretchen! (Everyone was kind but she really stood out and we have both been talking about it ever since!) read more

We enjoyed the lobster roll (smallish portion but made well), mushroom pizza, and truffle Parmesan fries. Golf types and others were meeting and chatting while enjoying drinks and food. Danielle served us she was friendly and helpful. She was pretty attentive and knowledgeable about the area spots. Made a visit for a special meal with the family on Sunday for lunch. If you've never been, it's not located on the resort side and has plenty of self or valet parking. The food for the most part was good. We started with the truffle fries and clams/mussels. Unfortunately several clams and mussels did not open so I'm a bit skeptical on how fresh the clams/mussels were. The fresh baked bread was very soft and the sweet butter was very good. As for the entrees, the ribeye was tender and flavorful, short rib dip was okay, a little on the dry side, the lobster roll was okay...was expecting larger chunks of lobster and the Chilean seabass was good too. Upon arriving, the hostesses were friendly but if there are any shortcomings (which is why it's a 3 not 4 star) it would be the service staff. They were a mixed bag and just not as attentive as I expect from a place like this. They forgot to bring drink refills, napkins, were not punctual on refilling water, some helpers were friendly while some seemed like they didn't want to be there. When one of the helpers (not waiter) asked if we needed anything else after she dropped off an entree, we asked her if we could get more hot water and she didn't seem like she knew what to do. Rather, she looked around like she was looking for our server when it was something she could've easily helped with. read more

Had a great evening here with my partner for my birthday! He made reservations, from yelp which made it much easier when booking! They have two choices for parking, one that is self parking and valet. I honestly would say to just self park because it's like a 2 minute walk to the restaurant and it's free. Highly recommend, which is what we did and it's parking in a safe structure. They have a new menu as of four days ago, but great selections of food. I think they should have a few more options and more options especially when it comes to their pizza. We were excited to try one pasta we saw on their old menu that was a pizza with some kind of meat, but now their choices didn't have meat. I went with the seabass which was very good. I loved the seabass, the sauce on the outside was a sweet tangerine sauce, which was a new flavor, but not my favorite. I felt that it was too sweet and not making the dish as savory. My boyfriend got the pasta. He liked it a lot in the beginning, but felt that after eating it, the after taste and the flavor got saltier and saltier. The views though were great and service was amazing. It was a great way for me to celebrate my birthday! In the end our server gave us a complementary cake for my birthday! We came to Pelican Grill in Newport to celebrate a very special birthday for one of my girlfriends, so I was really looking forward to treating her to what felt like such an exquisite restaurant in a beautiful location. Let me start with the positives: the location is absolutely stunning, the ambience is beautiful, and the service was excellent. On those points, I would absolutely give them 5 stars. The rosé champagne was also fresh, crisp, and delicious. Unfortunately, the food was the real disappointment. Given the restaurant's reputation and the price point, I expected dishes that were memorable and full of flavor. Instead, almost everything we ordered looked beautiful but tasted bland. We started with an appetizer that had lobster, saffron rice, and a meatball/croquette-style preparation, but it was so underwhelming I could barely taste the lobster. We also ordered the wild mushroom pizza, which was just okay -- nothing special. My friend's short rib was dry and lacked flavor, and my salmon, while beautifully presented, was honestly less flavorful than something I would make at home. For a restaurant of this caliber, that was a big letdown. Dessert was the final miss. We ordered the apple pie, and it was served cold in a copper-style cup. It just did not land for me at all. At that point, after being underwhelmed course after course, it was hard not to feel disappointed. In the end, we spent close to $400, and while the setting and service made the evening feel special, the food simply did not justify the cost. As an example $21 for a pretzel, but it was huge, warm and served with a nice warm cheese dip and mustard and was a hit. Everything we ordered we enjoyed. The short rib dip was great and was paired with a really well dressed salad. Nice truffle fries, thin and crisp. NY Strip steak was well cooked and seasoned with great flavor. Excellent food but very questionable service for an establishment of this caliber. We have been here a few times in the past but this time the service was just plain terrible. The way the menu prices are, one would expect top notch service and rightfully so. Lunch for 4 was more than $500 and only 2 of us had alcoholic beverages. My issue is not with that but the fact that service needs to be at par with the charges as well. Here's a list of issues:- - Menus were not offered till about 10 minutes after we sat down. - No one came to the table to see if we wished to order for at least 10 more minutes - Water service was very clumsy. The pitchers were sweating and that spilled on to the table cloth. - we had no idea who our server was. - drinks (just 2 cocktails) took a lot of time to come. Repeats took even longer. - clearance of dirties was delayed - no water refill till asked. - no service spoons and forks provided for salads. When asked we were given soup spoons!! - To top it all, they refused to give me my Bonvoy points and discount. As I said, food was great but the burger at Shake Shack down the road is delicious as well. We go to places like these for the experience. Pelican Grill missed the mark by a lot. We always liked to take friends there for the views, service, and atmosphere. This time it was rather disappointing. First of all, we arrived at the reserved time yesterday and we informed the receptionist about request for outside seating. We were told to wait a little bit. Then another receptions lead us to an inside seating booth. After checking, she told us to wait for up to 30 min or so. We were waiting while no one was update us for quite a while. While the Sun was about to set, I went to see the outside seating and found several empty tables outside (ready). I went to the front desk while the receptionists were casually chatting among themselves. upon being informed the availability of outside tables, they asked us to wait for another 10 min or so to get the tables ready. Well, we were called merely a minute or two later and shown to our table when the Sun was almost into the ocean. Then came with the disturbing part, i.e. the waiter introduced a "special dish" saying as a 36OZ porterhouse but with bone in thus the meat would be about 10OZ (most likely misspoken). That was it. No other descriptions about cut, aging, or special way of preparation. My wife wanted that. I asked her whether she could be sure about the 36OZ but she said there would be only 10OZ of meat or so. It was a BIG dish with meat way more than 10 OZ. I tried a piece of meat but didn't feel too special. It was rather shock to see the tab, a whopping $280 for the dish. For that kind of dish, two sentence of dish description was quite insane. While Red Snapper dish was adequate and Chilian Seabass was really good, I ordered Sausage Cavatelli that I never tried before. Asked the waiter about preparation, he said nice and recommended spicy bread crumbs. The dish was simply terrible. Very salty, not that much spiciness. The pasta was chewy (and good) but with very weak truffle aroma. The worst part was that there were NO sausages nor task of sausage, for a sausage dish. What a scam for a $45 dish! I called the waiter and asked about it. He went to the kitchen then came out saying that sausages were grounded as dressing. How laughable was this? Why didn't the chef ground any expensive ingredient into sauce and name the ingredient dish? The major problem is that there was zero taste or aroma of sausage in a sausage dish. read more

The outdoor balcony tables are lovely if you can get them, although the sun can be a bit blinding and burning if the shade lowering isn't being paid much attention to - still worth it for the views and experience haha. Pair it with a lovely walk of the grounds and you've got yourself a solid afternoon plan. Was disappointed with our experience here. I have been once before to celebrate an anniversary years ago and it was better then than it is now. From everything I read ahead of time it said valet was complimentary, but when I pulled up they said it was $25 and not complimentary anymore. We were seated on the terrace and the view can't be beat, the one positive about dining here. The service was average and fairly slow. The food was what surprised me though. I ordered the Crystal cove salad. It was okay. It looked like something I could have made at home. My son's burger was undercooked even though he ordered it medium well. It's overall frustrating to come to what's supposed to be a nice restaurant and pay very high prices for average food and service. Huge miss by a "top tier" restaurant. I booked a room at the Resort & a reservation for two on open table hoping to have a five star experience. The Resort did not disappoint but Pelican Grill was poorly managed, over priced & disappointing all around. When I booked my reservation, there were plenty of same day reservation times available so I requested a table outside 15 minutes before sunset to make things romantic. I arrived on time via shuttle (a nice touch from the Resort) and checked in with the host. We asked if we preferred inside or outside and I explained my request. We were directed to stand aside & wait to be seated (very odd for a 5 star restaurant). As we waited the sun began to set. After 15 minutes, I asked for an update as we were missing the sunset. A young lady said nothing was available and we would have to wait. I told her why we visited and what we requested but she didn't seem to care. "We are busy on Thursdays" was the response I got. We ended up in the sports bar section next to a massive TV playing college football surrounded by a bunch of middle aged, mediocre golfers who didn't even dress for the occasion (T shirts & shorts is not acceptable). I was told, this was all they had available. The waiter was kind enough.
