This place is legit, top-notch Korean fried chicken. My first time here, I wasn't ready. The chicken that arrived to our table was covered in a wet sauce, and though it was good, it seemed incorrect, somehow. I'd had Korean fried chicken at all the millions of places in NYC - where the standard options are "soy garlic or spicy," where your order can be rattled off as "half and half large wings please," where the chicken is encrusted in a dry glaze that retains plenty of crunch. No goop, less sweetness. What was this sticky chicken that Pelicana was serving, in a zillion wild flavors? Then I went and ate tons of Korean fried chicken in Korea. I see now. I seeeeeeee. On a recent visit to Pelicana, we got a half garlic/half original whole chicken ($21). Just like last time, it was juicy and not too heavily battered, the flavor was excellent and not overwhelmed by the admittedly very nice glaze. I expected something more overtly garlicky like [the underwhelming] Two Two Chicken in Seoul, but the garlic here was perfectly balanced. When Pelicana first opened, there was talk of all their chicken being organic. Not sure if that's still the case. Still, compared to getting an order of wings at Kyochon or something, the value is fantastic. Service was relaxed and extremely friendly, even though it was Sunday at 1am and the place was empty. If we're comparing the best of both varieties, I still prefer the dry kind (US chimaek franchise style??). But of all the KFC I've tried in New York, Pelicana is the only place where it tastes just like the best I had in Korea. My favorite Korean Fried Chicken place at the moment! The decor while eccentric and "fun" is a bit off putting to me with the neon lights glaring from the floor. After a while, you just get used to it and don't even notice it but at first, it's almost blinding. And it's everywhere, even in the bathroom. (Also, what's with all the fake money and bling? I just don't get it.) Once you get over that though, delicious chicken awaits! They claim to only use organic chicken and they use their oil only once, blah blah blah. Just throwing that out there for those who care about such things. There are tons and tons of flavors - fried, marinated, BBQ, garlic, cheese flavored, etc. The number of times I've been there though, I've always gotten the whole chicken half spicy fried and half marinated. (They also have wings and boneless as options. And also hamburg steak and a plethora of other non-chicken dishes if fried chicken doesn't appeal to you.) The spicy fried and spicy marinated is SPICY! Be warned! I love, love, love spicy so I love it even though my mouth is on fire and the top of my scalp is sweating, but for those who are not into spicy as much as I am, I'd suggest doing half spicy and the other half non spicy. The spicy marinated is good, but not much more so than other KFC places, but the spicy fried is AMAZING and addictive. The spices are in the batter. Every table gets a salad and pickled radishes. Unfortunately the chicken doesn't come with fries so you have to order that separate at a hefty price of $12, but they're hot and crispy. I wouldn't recommend the Hite by the pitcher. Last time we were here, A said it tastes a bit watered down. There are plenty of awesome bottled beer selections though (Delirium!), so I'd stick to bottled beers instead. read more

Perhaps leather to match the flair of the money encased with Tiffany & Co boxes in the floor. I felt the dark drab wood tables did this establishment no justice. Took me for a loop. The bathroom and back portion of the venue should have been the blueprint for the front. Our waiter was very kind and well versed in the English language to describe the plethora of menu items. On to the GRUB: I ordered the Mango Beer because it looked irresistible in Sha.F's photos. It was a beer filled orgasm. A must have!!! I'm coming back for a pitcher!!!! I was tempted to order the rice cakes but...my beer belly would've been on swoll. I decided on the "snowing cheese" pupari crispy wings. It took 20 minutes to cook our food. Delivered FRESH & Piping HOT! Snowing Cheese- Very tasty. Sweet, paemesan coating that was similar to corn elote on a wing!!! This place...is the promised land of K.F.C ! Seasoning that is a dream come true. Chicken that is tender and juicy to the inner core. I also sampled my friend's Spicy Garlic Soy wings. I bit in and it was an explosive parade of flavor in my mouth. 1 minute into my foodgasm a fire alarm went off. Their spicy is...not your version of spicy. 1/2 my face went numb. We drank a whole carafe of water to cool off. Deliciously deadly. But packed full of taste. Spicy that's burns so good, you can't stop eating. Even if half the roof of your mouth has a third degree burn. If you have nasal congestion, order the spicy garlic soy. Quick, easy remedy. I loved the K pop they played. I came here with my friend for lunch during my break from Queens College. This restaurant is not far from Queens at all. It's literally a 10 minute drive. Anyways, THE CHICKEN IS BOMB! Once we walked in we were greeted by a kind gentleman who told we could sit anywhere we wanted because the place was empty. It was 2pm in the afternoon on a Tuesday. Our table had a little mini garbage can which I thought was so cute. I see now why they have it because eating those wings can get messy. He gave us our menu so we could order. I noticed that they have two sets of menus. One that is in English and one in Korean I believe. I just ordered a water because I was picky of course and my friend got a draft beer, which was really pricey ($8). We ordered the fried sweet potato. Haha those things are tricky to eat. they are so thin, but they taste so good. They break so easily so be sure to open your mouth all the way lol. He came back with our finger protectors, and extra napkins. I ordered the 8 piece BBQ chicken. Oh gosh, it was amazing. It was perfectly seasoned, it had the right amount of crunch, the sauce was perfect. You can tell the chicken is organic because it didn't taste like all that crappy stuff we eat on the regular. Korean restaurant specializing in fried chicken. Chicken is well fried. Crispy skin, piping hot meat. The skin here is a bit thicker than other korean fried chicken spots. Some may like it, some may not, totally personal preference. I don't really mind at all. Would recommend the plain old fried chicken without sauce and the spicy chicken. The plain is very straight forward fried chicken. The spicy (level 3) is lip numbing, yet level 2 and 1 is not spicy at all. Probably the reason for the 4 star review. No middle ground at all. The fried appetizers/side dishes are great with beer as well. All with nice crispy fry. French fries, onion rings, dumplings are some of my favorite. The calamari is a bit weird. Came here on a weekday afternoon cause I wanted to go back to this place after coming back here for a yelp event. I really wanted to like this place, I really did, but after coming here I'm a little hesitant to come back stepped into this establishment, the staff was incredibly receptive and attentive, was handed the menu immediately and after ordering was given appetizers of pickled radishes and a salad with russian dressing, so far so good. After waiting and waiting and using the bathroom probably about 3 times due to me drinking all the water while waiting and refilling on the radishes and salad twice. After a little more than a half an hour wait my dishes finally arrive. I ordered the spicy soy garlic, bbq wings and the scallion wings, along with the snowy cheese fries. the Fries were pretty solid, they're coated with a nice cheese crust along with maybe seaweed? that gives it a pretty strong cheese flavor. The wings on the other hand were way too salty for my taste, I had to go back to the water over and over again, as I thought I was going to die from ingesting all that salt. I went home feeling extremely sick from all the salt i consumed, throat was incredible sore and mouth was incredibly dry. As for the flavor, I didn't taste anything resembling soy or garlic on the chicken, bbq wings were alright, while the scallion wings although nice in theory really didn't do much for me flavor wise. Actually I never been here before, but it is our friend's birthday and she does like Korean chicken so we took a chance and gave Pelicana Chicken a shot (also due the awesome Yelp reviews) It's so interesting to see another Korean fried chicken place open up in the neighborhood since there are so many good one around the area already but I guess it's good to have some kind of comparison! Pelicana Chicken is located on 162nd street between Sanford and Northern Blvd. Driving would be the best way to come here, there are plenty of on street parking on 162nd street as well as Northern Blvd. If you are coming by public transportation, the Broadway LIRR station is just a block and a half away. Decor and Ambiance: First impression: the place is a bit dark but once you walked into the restaurant, you will see this awesome painting of the NYC night scape on the wall to the left. The place definitely resemble a sport bar (with awesome Korean music) along with the wooden table and chairs. Estimate seating to be around 40-45 people. Our party of 12 came on a Tuesday night at around 7:30pm. The place was empty and we were seated right away. The servers were super attentive and started us off with water and some salad immediately. The chicken tasted very fresh here and their hot sauce is pretty spicy (it doesn't taste spicy in the beginning but give it a few minutes, it will kick you in the head). Everything here is pretty flavorful but my favorite will definitely be the marinated wings with garlic. That wings were not just super flavorful but were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside! However, I can't recommend the whole fried chicken here, although flavorful as well but it was quite a hassle to pick up the bones from the whole fried chicken pieces, so you best option is to go with the Peli Wings. BTW make sure you try their pickled pepper that comes with the Peli Wings cause they are pretty money!!! We also tried their Korean rice cake (dduk) and I can't tell you how much I love the dduk, the dish was delicious and well executed!! The dduk was soft and chewy, the sauce was spicy but didn't overwhelm the dduk and the cheese just marinate all these goodness together... it's a simple but delicious dish. As we are about to warp up to go, our waitress came over and offered us sweet potato fries as dessert.. it was a wonderful treat, it's string cut sweet potato fries with a dusting of cinnamon sugar up top! What a great way to end the meal. Price: Average compare to many other fried chicken places around the neighborhood with similar quality. The wings are 8 for $8.99 and the whole chicken will set you back about $20. Overall: Pelicana Chicken is pretty good. The service is excellent and chicken is delicious. With that said, I have yet to see something that makes Pelicana Chicken stand out from another Korean Fried Chicken place. I alway come here when I have late night craving since they close at 2AM which is like my favorite time. I have came here many times and the fried chicken is always cook to it perfection. Usually when it is busy, you just have to find your own seat and then the staff will come over and greet you and ask you what you want to order. Before they used to have salad and radish but now they only give you radish. I guess the reason is things are getting more expensive but they still have free can of coke or soda when you check in on yelp. The best part is their fried chicken, I tried almost all their favors and my favorite is their scallion with scallion sauce. My favorite Korean fried chicken spot ever!! Let's start by talking about the cool decor they had. In the floors, there were glass boxes with items made in Korea such as packs of cigarettes and decks of cards. I loved that added touch. The service here is also exceptional. The waiters were patient while I decided what I wanted to eat and gave great recommendations on the menu. Now, the best for last, the food!!! I had the fried chicken, of course. It was cooked to perfection. The outside was crispy and the inside was just so soft and full of flavor! I also had the Topokki, which was perfectly spicy and delicious. So when I came to visit them at their new house, I decided to bring over an order of Pelicana Half and Half (Original Flavor and the Marinated Sweet Sauce). They pride themselves in having the freshest ingredients for their chicken and I don't doubt that. However, in terms of flavor and taste, I still prefer Bon Chon and Mad for Chicken. Pelicana uses the whole chicken and the white meat parts came out a bit drier than I would like it to be. Also, the skin wasn't as crispy as other places. Maybe I should have just stuck with the wings, thighs, and legs pieces. As for now, I think this place is "okay". I'm used to eating chicken that's either too crispy with absolutely no meat or too meaty and soggy, but not enough crunch! There's a plethora of sauces to choose from, so it gets pretty difficult for those who are indecisive! I usually order the soy garlic wing and the crispy snowy wings, which basically has cheese sprinkled over it. Pretty indifferent about the crispy snowy wings. It's good at first bite, but after a few bites, they seem a little dry. I like how their chicken is not as greasy as other places though. A lot of the times I feel extremely lethargic after a few bites of chicken. But not here! They have a pretty extensive beer menu! I think the frozen beers are kinda cool. They're really refreshing during the summer and definitely a twist on beers you can hardly find anywhere else. The yogurt soju is pretty good and a generous amount of soju is in it! My sauce had a tiny bit of spiciness. My son had the crispy wings with spicy BBQ sauce. I licked a drop of his sauce and my nose started to run! He enjoyed his order but only made it half way thru an order of 10 wings. The cashier young lady was very nice. Food was made fresh and hot in 20 minutes. Based on the reviews, I decided to try this place. Usually, for Korean Fried Chicken, I would go to Mad for Chicken or Bon Chon to satisfy my cravings. I ordered the Soy Garlic and the Pelicana Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings, Truffle Fries, and the Calamari for my party. Now, lets begin the review, the wings were mediocre and definitely far inferior to my usual go to places. Soy garlic wings lacked the crunch and taste factor. The Sweet and Spicy wings were too saucy and not good. The truffle fries were downright terrible. Pelicana charges $10 for this. It was stale and had no taste whatsoever. You get better fries at McDonalds or Wendys. Totally not recommend! The Calamari had too much batter and not enough calamari. Not ordering this again. Interior: very open plenty of tables, two tv's overall great atmosphere to relax. Service: Polite, but not overly pushy, won't try to upsell you on more items on the menu. Food: These wings are phenomenal in every sense, the flavor is out of this world amazing, most wings usually have a decent coating but more then often tend not to have the most flavorful meat, these wings not only have the best coating to give you that crispy crunchy chicken wings bite that you desire but the meat has a delicious flavor as well. Ordered the cheesy calamari, cheesy wings, marinated wings, and sweet and spicy wings. The cheesy wings and calamari is almost like they are dipped in the Cheetos cheese after fried and delicious. The sweet and spicy are really good also. Korean fried chicken is awesome. It's a little different than Bonchon though. Not with all the batter. Also ordered the mango beer ice cream. Really good, taste like juice with ice cream. Also they have flavored soju. We got a bunch of the peach ones. Open late so come her whenever you have the cravings. read more

Pelicana's is fairly decent and hit the spot, but can't say they were the best wings I've had. They give you a starter plate of salad for the table- enough for two and they even offered more which was awesome. Ordered sweet potato fries although the waiter mistook this for regular fries. Nonetheless the correct order did come out after explaining and we were afforded the liberty of having both (OH YEAAA). For the wings, we ordered both the peli regular and spicy crispy to get a sampling of both. First items to note were how massive and overly saucy they were. Additionally, both types of wings were equally crispy with the actual crispy wings just having more batter.. in a negative way. As for taste, while both were super flavorful, HOT DAMN the spicy wings are freaking spicy. I've always thought of myself of having a high tolerance but I felt like I needed an immediate fire extinguisher in my mouth (thanks Pelicana for making me look like a little biatch but appreciative for the sweet potato fries easing me out of my pain). Needless to say, stick to the regular unless you have the luxury of having a killer palette/no taste buds or order the cheese wings to offer a balance. All in all, might come back to try some other flavors if I was in the area, but would probably opt to try Mad for Chicken first. Pelicana has a chill vibe--perfect for chicken and beer while you're watching a game on television. The chicken is delicious with a good balance of meat and crispy fried coatings. The fries are thick and well-seasoned. The mozzarella sticks are to die for. The restaurant itself is clean. However, when compared to the local favorite 'Mad for Chicken', the chicken wings/drumsticks are smaller, making the portion look smaller for the price. It's certainly not as pricey as 'Mad for Chicken' but neither is it on the cheaper side. Many sauces, such as those for the mozzarella sticks or fries, do not come with the dish. Rather, you have to pay an additional few dollars for it. Overall, it's a nice restaurant with good food. I'm not sure if it's a place I'd like to go regularly to but it's a nice occasional place to just hang out with friends. read more

Came here with my friend and parking was a breeze. I got the Soy Garlic half wings ($9) which contains eight pieces! I loved how crispy it was but at the same time had a lot of meat. The flavor was spot on too. Definitely recommend you to try it out if you're around the area and craving chicken. Each table also gets a salad and the white radish(?) cubes as appetizers and because it's fairly tiny, the waiters are able to be very attentive. read more

This restaurant has impeccable service and the ultimate New York ambiance. It is perfect for people of all ages and they play the latest sporting events on TV. This place is blissful and blows Buffalo Wild Wings out of the water. I ordered a whole marinated crispy chicken and a whole bbq crispy chicken (half regular half sauce) These are the best chicken wings I have had in a while. They are well fried and I loved the marinated crispy chicken especially :) I also ordered the spicy chicken and the scallion chicken. The spicy chicken is REALLY spicy so be prepared but it's also sweet and yummy. The scallion chicken was okay... I wasn't the biggest fan but my friend liked it. This place is a definite squad spot for late lunch or dinner. This place has been major key for many, many times- when one or maybe all squad members are craving fried chicken and beer. The key is to order a whole chicken. Any half orders won't satisfy your craving when you bite into the crispy deliciousness that is korean fried chicken- whether it be slathered with or without sauce. Be aware that the chicken takes long to kill/cook/fry, so order some drinks and have several rounds without complaints. The service here is attentive and pleasing, particularly on my last visit. Everything here is delicious...but the Kampoongi on my last visit (or the Sweet & Spicy Fried Chicken) was just mindblowingly good and crispy.
