I tried this cart, which is located in the Hawthorne Asylum pod, yesterday. I had seen them on Instagram and in other people's reviews before so when it was time to decide which cart to order from, this was a no-brainer. I got the small size chicken pelmeni for $10.99. They call your name when it's ready which can be hard to hear if you're seated - I'd recommend they get a beeper. It comes with a sour cream topping, and their two spicy sauces or vinegars are optional. The hot mustard is SO hot but very good. The dumplings are small individually but a hearty amount altogether. The texture is unique for dumplings but typical for pelmeni if you're familiar with them (I'm not, really, only had them a few times). The flavors are mild on the dumpling themselves but the sauces really amp it up.

We tried the Potato Vareniki and were pleasantly surprised! The service was super quick, and the dumplings were light, delicate, and melt-in-your-mouth good. It wasn't anything out of this world, but definitely a solid, comforting, quick bite -- simple, satisfying, and worth a visit if you're in the area.

How awesome is it that you can get pelmeni a food truck? I guess it's Portland, so I shouldn't be surprised. I ordered the chicken pelmeni and they were so comforting and delicious. The dumplings are a great texture and the sour cream and dill so fresh. Make sure to get some of the hot mustard and spicy sauce to kick it up a notch! Both were great additions. I'd be stopping here for lunch a dangerous amount... thankfully there's no danger of that since I live in the Midwest!

I've been here twice now and love the food. The pelmeni has a great texture and I like ordering this with all the toppings. The cold sour cream, sauce, and scallions are a great complement to the pelmeni. If you like spicy, be sure to add the hot sauce when you pick up your food. I've ordered the small and large chicken pelmeni from here. I actually prefer the small size because it seems to have a better ratio between toppings and pelmeni.

Solid pelmeni. But $16 for a "large" but actually quite a small bowl is a little insane. I suggest going to nearby Eastern European grocery stores any buying them in bulk instead.

We discovered Pel'meni at a little restaurant last year in Sitka, Alaska. I am a complete dumpling freak and always have my eyes open for new flavors and familiar old ones. When I found Pelmeni Pelmeni on yelp, I even signed up for their club and frequently get offers for discounts. We drove up from the San Francisco Bay Area with our 3.5-year-old Shiba Inu dog. When we arrived at the food pod, I kept an eye on our dog while my wife placed our order. After she joined us at our table with the food, I realized that I had forgotten to take advantage of my discount. (sigh) Oh well. At least the food was good. A little thicker than what we remember and missing the butter and hot sauce we had in Sitka but still flavorful. We got the Beef Pelmeni, Potato Vareniki and a Kompot made from Apples, Plums, Cherries and Blackberries. We were disappointed that they did not have any Borscht during our visit. I was looking forward to that with a dollop of sour cream. Still, definitely a food cart worth stopping at.

I ordered the beef pelmini on a whim to try for dinner while my son opted for Thai food from another food truck at Oak Tree station. These were cooked fresh after my order was taken and came piping hot. The photo is after we already dug into it. I asked for the sour cream on the side since we were taking them home and not eating immediately there. Very delicious and texture of the wrapper was slightly chewy, not mushy. Cooked perfectly. I will definitely come back again for this. The location I visited is in Camas, Oak Tree station.

In the Hawthorne asylum food trunks, this small foodcart serves a unique dish. I have not had a lot of experiencing trying Ukrainian food and was pleasantly surprised with these dumplings. They were flavorful, hot, perfect for a cool rainy afternoon. It tasted great with the dill, tomato, and cream sauce.

I really wanted to love this place, as I've been waiting a while to try it, but it just didn't hit the mark for me. I ordered ahead of time online, and when I arrived at the food truck, there was a paper sign on the window that they were closed and would be back soon. It took a long time for my order to be ready -- like over 40 minutes -- and then, when it was, the pierogis were overcooked. I would someday try again, but I was just visiting Portland this time around, and it was a disappointing experience. The order was also way smaller than I'd expected.

This is my favorite food truck in the Hawthorne Asylum! Don't let their limited menu food you, their dishes are out of this world. This Russian and Ukrainian comfort food hits the spots on a cold and gloomy day. The portioning is generous and the flavor is top tier. I recommend the beef Pelmeni and the Borsh. It took about 10 minutes from order to pickup and the food truck works were so kind and helpful. You can't go wrong with heading to the Hawthorne Asylum, the ambiance is on point, so social and inviting.

Although the Hawthorne Asylum area initially looks spooky from the outside, there are many interesting food carts inside and Pelmeni Pelmeni is one of them. This food cart is unique considering it sells Russian styled dumplings. The dumplings are really good -- juicy, have good meaty flavor, and a balance of creaminess from the sour cream/cheese. My friends and I enjoyed them a lot. However, the reason why I would dock a star is because the quantity is very little while the price is around $13 for a large portion (the picture I posted is a large size). The cook/cashier was nice and service was fast because they made an extra batch before we bought. Overall, I think this is worth the experience if you haven't had Russian dumplings, but don't count on getting full from the food.

Was in Portland in early March (2024) and went to this place and it was stellar. Newly single (both of us) made for a perfect romantic setting that we both salivated over and took dessert back to my favorite hotel (Zags) & ate the dessert in the oversized tub with the lights down low watching Scooby Doo, Mister Kangaroo, and Gilligan's Island. We asked our waitress to pick out the dinner and sides for us and let's just say / smart move. Going back here again & again since her new place is in Portland and we both love desserts in the tub together!

Came here on a rainy day. Wasn't sure how these would be with the ketchup and sour cream but everything came together perfectly. Highly recommend the chicken pelmeni.

Beef Pelmeni with the works and hot sauce. Excellent !

We had a 5:15 seating and it only got busier and busier as the evening went on, which was really humming all night. I particularly love the happy hour menu because it lets you try a broader range of dishes at a fraction of the usual price. We decided to skip the mains and just order a bunch of cold and hot zakuskis, though I definitely had my eye on the Golubsti for a future visit. Everything we tried was fantastic and felt like a real journey through post-Soviet cuisine, specifically via Belarus if I'm remembering correctly. The tangy assortment of pickled vegetables was a great start, followed by the ultra-salty (in the best way) and sumptuous caviar on toast. The savoriness of the meat dumplings was a great yin to the yang of the richness and creaminess of the farmer's cheese dumplings, and the cod liver on rye was beautifully balanced by a snowfall of fresh horseradish on top. The standout, though, was the Herring 'Under a Fur Coat', which the menu describes as a Russian 7-layer dip and which was absolutely spectacular, airy, and light in a way I was not expecting when they first set the dish down in front of me. Our server was warm, attentive, and always happy to jump in with recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. The space itself was full of energy, and the shop upstairs is also a fun bonus, with everything from the same dumplings they serve in the restaurant, but frozen, to a wide selection of wines and liquors. Overall a fantastic meal overall and already looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu!

The potato pancakes served with the rabbit were prepared well, but had no complimentary sauce or flavor. The dumplings were tasty, the smoked fish snack app were good, but the rye bread was just okay. The lavash pocket was good, better with the dipping sauce. They're patient when we have questions and are always so helpful. I'm assuming they're the owners as well and they really are so proud of their food. FOOD: - Varenyky: Essentially an Ukranian dumpling stuffed with potato and cheese with caramelized onions on top and sides of sour cream and cabbage salad. Now the dumpling itself is not a flavour punch but I don't think it's supposed to be. It was cooked well, the dough was not tough or rubbery and mixing it together with the sides it's like comfort in your mouth. - Hot Dog: This is my personal favourite. I believe it's a pork-based sausage that's topped with their delicious creamy house sauce and topped with pickles carrots and their slaw and it's a pretty decent size and a delicious meal. Comes with chips too. - Borscht: YUM. Chunks of beets and it's the that sweet and slightly sour taste. Dip their bread in it. Trust. OVERALL: Such a random find in the mall!
