When my husband and I travel, we often stay at a peninsula hotel. This trip to NY, after attending the NY open we thought we would grab a drink and a snack at salón de Ning. We were abruptly stopped and asked for our vaccination cards, which we gladly provided, but on arrival to the bar, tables were overcrowded and there were numerous children! Cigars are apparently their specialty and the "table" next to us had 4 cigar smokers including a small roughly 10 yo maskless unvaccinated child. The table had 6 kids- all maskless once they entered and at least 8 adults. Another 4 top had 8 people also smoking cigars. We informed the managers that the smoke was bothering us and asked to move to an open table away from the smoke- which was thick from the excessive number of people per table. He said he needed time and promptly seated another group to the open table. Service was horrible, atmosphere is horrible (unless you want to watch children smoke and their mom who forgot to zip the back of her dress). It was so gross that after coming back and washing the smell of smoke out of my hair, I will not stay at this peninsula ever again. CHILDREN SMOKING CIGARS!!!! Why ask for proof of vaccination at bars if you will allow maskless children? I fully support asking, but this suggests a certain degree of safety, which is eliminated by allowing overcrowding with maskless children. read more

I thought this bar wasn't too bad. It can get crowded but it has a nice intimate setting and feel. Drinks were good and the view is great especially at night. Plenty of nice picture opportunities for memories. The bartenders were pretty chill and the people there were hilarious. Good place for a date. The drinks are gonna be pricey like what do you expect? Came here with my boyfriend and we were taking in the view and sat down for less than 10 minutes. In that time, our server came 3 times to ask if we were going to order and then after a minute of him coming back he sent his manager or so over and he basically said we needed to leave because we had not ordered super fast and there was other people waiting?? We left at their request and saw not one person waiting for a table here. They rushed service to try to get us to order something and ultimately kick people out if they take 10 minutes to order. Used to love this place. They used to have more comfortable and soft lounge seating, now it's all metallic tables and seats. Lots of them too which tells me they gave up large sofas for more seats thus more $$. Prices went up. Very saddened. This is one of the rooftops worth seeing however not with the current decor. Swung by The Peninsula Hotel to check out this rooftop bar, which I think can only be accessed through the handicap-accessible elevator in the lobby. The ambiance was very chill on a weekday evening. The draw to this place is the rooftop patio. Each table has heat lamps and blankets. Unfortunately, there may be smokers in your midst also taking advantage of the aire libre setting. The bar menu is pretty lengthy, featuring fruity cocktails, wine, champagne, a few overpriced bar snacks, as well as cigars and Marlboro cigarettes. read more

There is one elevator that services the whole rooftop bar. There will be a long wait for it, whether you are going up or down. The place was pretty packed early on a Friday afternoon after work. If you manage to get an outdoor table, its great. If not, you will get packed inside, which is okay, but not ideal. read more

Since the drink prices are astronomically expensive and I look quite young, the waitress did not give us a 'snack bowl' like all the other parties when we order our drinks. Instead ordring more rounds, we left feeling very unwelcome. Because I have a conscious I tipped her a normal percent, but other than that, the tip was not deserved. One of the best experiences I've had at a NYC rooftop have been here!!! It's a high-end rooftop bar located in the Peninsula Hotel :) it has a beautiful decor & a small menu of amazing appetizers. I came here for my friends birthday and we had such an amazing time! Loved their cocktails, and beautiful city views, including the entire Fifth Ave! It's a great place and ambiance to watch the sunset during the summer :) Definitely can't wait to go again soon! read more

Hmm it's an ok bar, considering the fact that it is located at the rooftop of Peninsular hotel, that the outdoor view was actually pretty gorgeous. Drink menu was a bit limited, and even shorter for non-alcoholic drinks. I settled myself with the lychee purée with basil leaves, it was rather, hmm underwhelming. Definitely stop by if you plan to have an amazing view of the city, paired with some sort of alcohol; but do not emphasize too much on the quality of drink itself. I don't know if I'm the first one got confused by their elevators, but seems to me that in order to get to the R floor where the bar is located, you need to enter a tiny hall way to your right immediately entering into the building. The regular elevators would never take you to the correct place! read more

It was perfect summer weather in New York this past weekend, and what better way to experience it than on a luxurious rooftop. Plan: Meet at the rooftop bar of the Peninsula for pre-dinner drinks. Logistics:I was staying within walking distance, well....within walking distance in certain shoes and certain clothes. It was 7pm, and still VERY bright outside. And I was dressed for the evening. So, instead of getting sweaty walking and being gawked at by tourists I decided to use a lyft. When you arrive to the Peninsula, you are welcomed by a gaggle of handsome staff. I really felt like a celebrity. As you walk into the hotel, entrance to Salon de Ning is down a small flight of stairs. These stairs take you to a dimly lit corridor with a private elevator. Still feeling famous. The elevator is SLOW. So, yeah...that part. When you exit the elevator to the immediate left are the toilettes (a place this nice doesnt have restrooms). To the right you have a few options. An outdoor seating area to the left, more calm and less congested. Bar area in the middle, the hub of the "scene" crowded. Outdoor seating area to the right, even more crowded than the bar area. The views atop SDN are breathtaking, you are high above the rush. Plush seating and nicely appointed decor everywhere you turn. Pleasant staff, amazing drinks and complimentary nuts. Who woulda thunk. Now here is the the drinks are $25 a piece. YES, A PIECE. Jesus, help me Lord, help me father. Granted they are good. But why they so spensive? Hold your breath, its worth it. Only one....unless you're wealthy. This sets the tone for your day or night, so splurge a little. Drink water at your next place. This is one of my favorite stomping grounds in New York. The Salon De Ning is located on the rooftop of the Peninsula Hotel in Midtown. As soon as you walk through the doors of this hotel, you realize that it's in a class of it's own. There are other five star hotels here in New York, but this one has a subtle casualness to it that I love. You can come here in jeans and sweater, or dressed to the nines... Luxury with the top button undone. From the lobby of the Peninsula, take the elevators to the right up to the roof top, where it will open up to the Salon De Ning. You're greeting by your first piece of art, ironically modern for such a classic hotel. It's a pop art version of a baby with sunglasses on. It always makes me laugh when I see it. You go down a long hall with oriental rugs over the hard wood until you get to the main bar. There are tiny little jewel colored lanterns a bit more Middle Eastern than Asian and if you look up there are paintings and other art work on the ceiling. Clever..... If it's warm night, they'll have the doors to the roof top open. French doors open onto the roof top with brilliant views of this magnificent city, a couple cabana's and ample seating for intimate groups of two or four. The crowd is always friendly and the staff is as well. Decent wine list and amazing Irish Coffees. I should warn you that the drinks are on par with New York Hotel Bar prices, which is usually $20-30 a drink. What can I say? You pay for the real estate and the magnificent view! Cheers! read more

Do you think you're the only rooftop in NYC or the world for that matter? I wouldn't mind paying those prices if you had something that was one-of-a-kind to offer. Sorry to break it to you, there are tons of other rooftops that have way better views and more modern decor. This is a small space, full of pretentiousness. I think I'll stick to Le Bain as my go-to rooftop. I've also had decent experiences at Ava Lounge and Rare Bar. It's all the same thing. Im glad my friends company took care of the $700 tab. If you are a banker, trust fund pup, wanting to get in the sack with a girl, or dining on the company's dime, this is the ticket for you. Everyone else, save your pennies. I was lucky enough to fall into one of the above categories (which one, I'll never tell) and grabbed a drink on PenTop's amazing roof on one of the hottest days of the year. The views, the people watching, oh yeah and the drinks, are what you're slapping down $25 a pop for (and gents, that's the cheapest drink. Just wait until you get to top shelf). You're not paying for the service (it was pretty sporadic and quite slow) or the decor either. But staring out across 55th Street towards the Hudson as the sun sets and sipping a glass of champagne, at least you'll have the memories (and a lighter wallet - and maybe the girl) read more

Summary: Sliver of a view, though most tables have no view. Great cocktails. Very professional. Rounding up from 3.5. There are better spots, but worth checking out. Atmosphere: In all fairness everyone should go here at least once. It's lovely, but you don't really get the full rooftop vibe. The setting is gorgeous though and it's really hard for me to give it 3 stars for that reason. This is great for business drinks or a date. The music is not overpowering. Quite a lot of the tables will not have a view, so you really must pick your spots. When I went it wasn't quite the sort of bar where people were walking around. A bit less social than some bars. Service: It's always top notch here, which is rare in rooftop bars. For that reason, I rounded up. If you're doing something where you need to have a good service experience to impress someone, then this Salon de Ning would sort you out. Check out other son my list with 4 stars though. The Crowd: Mostly professionals and guests of the hotel. The Drinks: Well... they know how to make a good cocktail here. Drinks are NYC pricy, so like 5 dollars more than the average of NYC. However, it's about the same price as most mixology cocktail bars in Manhattan, so I didn't deduct a star for cost. I hope this was an anomaly. I really do. Based on my previous glowing review of Salon de Ning, it is obvious that this is among my favorite to have a cocktail in all of New York City. With this past weekend's warm weather, I thought that a drink on Salon de Ning's (usually) beautiful rooftop terrace would be a fantastic way for SCJ and me to wind down the night. I should have known that there would be trouble when we stepped into the elevator, it went up one floor and then about 17,000 people got on with us (all going up to the top). Once we walked in, it was crowded to the point that I have never seen before. Pair this with SCJ being attacked by a drunk Texan whose coworker shirked him onto her. I made my way out onto the terrace to encounter an unimaginably crowded scene. I imagine that this is what steerage on the Titanic looked like if they were allowed to have fresh air (well, "fresh" in the mostly cigarette smoke kind of way). As I stood waiting for a table to clear up, the manager of Salon de Ning radioed down to the lobby to inform them to close the elevator since the place was now filled to capacity. Being that people were virtually stacked 10 deep, this should have been apparent sooner. We finally got a table and after effectively begging the manager for service, a waiter came over and took our order. Behind us sat the group of Texan colleagues obnoxiously hooting, some drinking sparkling water straight from the bottle. How classy. Our drinks arrived and were as good as they ever are, so props for keeping quality up when it's unbelievably crowded. It's just disappointing that they can't keep the atmosphere even remotely attractive when there are a lot of people here. No candles lit and the terrace washed in white light from above... Not very nice. I told SCJ that for $23 for one drink, I expect everything be impeccable. With Salon de Ning, it usually is, but this time was a major let down. They should never allow this many people into the place and where I always encountered a relatively laid back, classy crowd here, it was decidedly low-brow and unattractive this time. Now I'm not sure whether to believe that this place is only good during the cold months when people go elsewhere, or if this was an isolated incident. I'm hoping it is the latter. read more

Took the wife here after work for a few drinks last night. The patio was already crowded at 5:30 so we sat at the bar until a table opened up But when it did, we preferred the bar so stayed right there. Enjoyed it very much. Kris made some awesome cocktails and the conversation with those seated opposite us was enjoyable. With $24.00 drinks and $13.00 beers, it keeps the happy hour and cheapie crowd away, which we like. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the outdoor patio is too small for my liking negating much of the view. The bar inside is small but if you're lucky enough to grab a few seats at the bar, I'd grab them. The music got better as it got later. More EDM as the night wore on. The crowd is dressy, with the females carrying , LV, Chanel, Valentino, Prada and every other high end name in purses. Lots of suits and ties amongst the men. Enjoyable to see and again, this crowd keeps the riff-raff out. Good! By the way, the cocktail menu is pretty good though the high end selection of liquors is really limited. I can see myself patronizing Salon de Ning frequently. My suggestion; if you're looking for happy hour or a deal, stay away. We don't need your complaining about the drink size, variety, taste when really it all comes down to the fact you just can't afford to be there. That's why they invented applebees. read more

So, you know that smell you get in New York Subway stations, say mid-August, the waft of human urine that will not stop following you down the platform no matter how far away you move? Well if you love that gorgeous odor, you will be in for a treat at the Salon de Ning mens restroom. I suspect it is only serviced weekly. It made the seriously priced, even if strong and well balanced, Negroni churn in my stomach. I am not one to shy away from heavy prices for places with perfect locations and meticulous service, but it is intolerable to have sloppy table service, crusty decor and bathroom hygiene only comparable to the MTA. read more

Located on the roof of the Peninsula, this lounge offers gorgeous views of the city - both before and after sunset. During after work hours, it is definitely a place to see and be seen. That also means that the bar area is ridiculously crowded. Finding a seat can be a bit of a challenge, but the larger outdoor lounge area has a waiting list - so you can put your name down, get a drink, and wait for the nice man to come tell you that a table is available. While you wait, you'll be pushed and shoved due to the size of the bar area as you're literally rubbing elbows with the Fifth Avenue crowd. The drinks themselves are made very well - the martinis are delicious, but at $22 each, I would expect nothing less. They're also on the strong side. But ladies, beware: if you come here, you will get hit on left and right by cheesy but wealthy men who could be as old as your grandfather. If you can handle it (or you're into that sort of thing), this is definitely a great place to enjoy the city. read more

Great ambience, great decor, vibe was great UNTIL the abrupt TURNING ON OF THE HARSH LIGHTS to signal the impending close of the place. This is New York, the city that never sleeps; there were still plenty of patrons; it was still early by NYC standards. The servers ranged from very chill and friendly (main bartender) to gruff and unsmiling (most everyone else) - and this was even BEFORE they turned on the lights and did everything they could to hurry us out (while we were still nursing a $75 Macallan 18 and a $25 Lagavullin) Disappointed, especially considering the lofty standards of the Peninsula and the very chic naughty opium den ambience of the place. I understand every establishment has its set closing time, and getting the last patron to leave is always a play in diplomacy and graciousness. here Salon de Ning failed; Casa Lever (which we just closed down 30 minutes before) handled it wonderfully. read more

Wandered into the Peninsula bar on a Friday night after discussing the virtues of the Hong Kong Peninsula bar's bathroom over dinner. The outdoor patio and the view were something wonderful, but the place was inexplicably dead with a crowd that was a bit more mature than we would've liked. At one point, we saw two fifty-year-old women walk onto the balcony where we had been standing gaping at the skyline. We turned to each other and without discussing why, decided to leave. Did like that they gave us a snack bowl and the balcony you can stand at bar the bar had amazing views. Definitely a clutch rooftop bar in the city. I spotted it in a NY Times piece and figured I would give it a try. Location = interesting. Located on 5th ave, right in the heart of the "ballin' outta control" district (i.e. Bergdorf, Louis, and all those high end stores). This makes it a bit of a chore to get to, but the views of 5th ave are pretty great. Price = higher than Lindsey Lohan (LiLo). You're going to drop a nice penny for a cocktail, even a brewski, but I think it's worth it once to try it out. Rooftop lounge on the Peninsula. (The elevator is on the right side of the lobby in a side hallway.) There's a bar with a few seats, some small tables inside, more tables on a patio outside, and a few seats on a little balcony looking up towards Central Park. The cocktail menu here is really not my favorite (I tried the concoction that was like a dark 'n' stormy with carrot puree--odd) and the wine list didn't necessarily light my fire. The bartenders are good at their craft, but maybe not quite as immediately attentive as you might expect from something associated with the Peninsula. The couple of times I've been here, my experience has also been that they attract a fairly large douchebag quotient in their clientele, judging by some of the douchebag conversations going on around me. The music selection is also odd--when I was there the other week, "Gangnam Style" was playing when I got off the elevator and it seemed to be that kind of vibe all evening. It just doesn't jibe with the overall ambience. (I'm not the only one who thought so; I heard a couple also commenting on it on the way down in the elevator.) The view is pretty great, though. And if you get there early, it's much quieter and more relaxing. read more

This has been on my hitlist for awhile and sadly I read about the decor change. I used to think the ambience would be 1920s Shanghai but the rooftop just had metal tables and seating with heatlamps. I couldn't see much of the views either and drinks were $25! I ordered Manhattan downtown drink if I remember correctly. Prestigious location and that's about it. The drinks are super expensive, even by midtown NYC standards (paid $25 for my Laphroaig). Waited for a good 5 minutes for the single elevator to take us up to the roof. The indoor space is extremely crowded and has a very tight passageway to walk through to get to one of the outdoor patios. There is a small strip of outdoor space that fits 1 person in width and perhaps 15 people across (perhaps 10 more full-bodied individuals). We got lucky and got a table on the patio, where we were immediately attacked from all sides by strong second hand smoke wafting over from old, rich dudes with ladies 30 years their junior. Views are nice, but with some recent opening nearby like The Roof at the Viceroy is really nothing to fawn over. Staff was friendly but a bit hard to grab a hold of at times. Bottom line: there are better alternatives nearby, skip this one. read more

Smokers paradise. My nose is still running from the toxic assault, but the views are worth it. The view was MARVELOUS! Top scores. It is an outdoors on the roof. Marvelous. The decor of dark woods and red umbrellas and seinna high lights here and there were very well set against the real attraction: New York City night! I nursed one drink: Pelligrino. Everything else was priced as sky high as the view. My date had red. Can't comment more on the quality of the quenchers. The pricing dictated the crowd that was there and that was one of the reasons why my date loved it there. He loved the fancy pants people. I, on the other hand, could do with more earthy people and less pretentious puff. This is not a young chick place. Women here looked like they had some success to show. If that is the chick you want to pick, then this is that spot. I would warn you against the young ones that roam here. They might be more the Gossip Girls type. Service was good. Music selection was hip and cool and relaxed. It was not so loud and I actually got to hear what my date had to tell me. Sadly, I think I stayed too long because I ended up nauseated: due to either cigarettes or to the yap yap yap of a pompous date. He summed his attitude and that comment summed this place up: "You only have one moment in the sun. You should put on a show. It takes effort to be so pretentious. Is is wrong that I don't want people to know about this place?! The concierge from the St. Regis recommended this place, and I have to say I wasn't expecting this at all. I love the ambiance at Salon de Ning. A little pricey, drinks run from $18-$26 etc, however, my cocktails were very strong. The view is phenomenal and the staff is very friendly. However, if they are busy, expect a while for them to take your order. Once they take your order, it's pretty quick. If you want to impress a date or an out of towner friend, this is the place to bring them! I would never come here in jeans. Please dress well. read more
