Located on the rooftop of The Peninsula Hotel with no reservations, this spot is a nice last minute pop in for drinks with a gorgeous scenery. They have an indoor and outdoor area with large couches outside that can accommodate large parties for table service. We didn't have any food but we kept the drinks flowing. All the drinks were delicious including the non-alcoholic ones. Our server was extremely accommodating and had great recommendations. We came here on a Friday around 5:30pm and there were several tables available. I wasn't thrilled that with about four tables open that we were seated at the only table facing the wall instead of the beautiful view---which is why we came. Drinks were very good. My drink came with tajin around the rim which was not specified in the description, but our server was gracious enough to offer to have it remade. He was great. Very nice and checked on us frequently. My husband smoked a cigar while there. It is allowed by the bar, and they provide ashtrays when asked. Patrons did a lot of eye rolling but that is not the problem of the bar...they aren't responsible for the behavior of the other patrons. The bar, itself, was very accommodating. We were originally going to go to BarSixtyFive, but as it hadn't fully opened yet, we ended up here. An elevator took us up to the bar, which had an old-fashioned vibe with a pretty heavy smell of smoke. (They sell cigars here if that's your thing) When we sat down, we waiting for around 15-20 min without anyone coming to take our orders. It wasn't until my friend got up and went to the bar that we were able to place our order. I got an Orange Cocktail, which to be honest I didn't really enjoy the taste of. Drinks are also on the pricier end (35 per cocktail after tip). The bar had pretty nice views and vibes, but the slow service and high price definitely put a slight damper on things. This cocktail lounge on the roof of the Peninsula hotel is rarely crowded, so you can stroll right in. There's a large patio area that's heated in the winter and has nice enough views of the city, but the interior of the bar is feeling pretty dated, as is the case with the whole hotel. Both hotel and bar are really pricey and high end, but the majesticity of the Peninsula name really loses its luster when it feels like the space needs some updating. This might be appropriate for those who treat the Peninsula as a reliable mainstay, but for those of us excited about all the shiny new rooftop bars the city has to offer may find this rooftop bar wanting. While the prices are sky high, the bar does know how to make a good cocktail. I was pleased with their extensive whiskey list and the bartender's breadth of liquor knowledge, so I did feel taken cared of. I was a guest at the hotel and upon checkin the concierge recommended the rooftop bar as a place to check out so that's exactly what I did. The weather was clearing up and just warm enough to sit outside without freezing so we decided to sit outside. The view is nice and there are two plastic domes that you can book if you have a large enough party but since we didn't, we opted for a spot next to the edge. Being in the Peninsula, you would expect good service but our waiter felt more like a back of house staff who had been asked to fill a role temporarily until the real waiter was back. My husband received a phone call and he thought that was the perfect time to come to our table to take our order, luckily he had mentioned something he might order so I just got that for him. It was really awkward because he was standing so far away and asking me questions, I had to raise my voice. Drinks are not cheap which is expected and they were very average. The busser was visibly annoyed when we were leaving and was intent that we walk backwards and out of the way so he could pass. Not asking to be get special red carpet treatment or anything but I am heavily pregnant and clumsier than normal. Finally upon signing the bill, the same un-trained waiter came running out to the lobby saying I didn't pay. I had put the charge on our room and he failed to read the giant words we had clearly written on the receipt. Extremely embarrassing for everyone involved. My friends got alcoholic drinks and thought they were some of the better ones they've had, and I opted for a lychee mocktail which was very fresh. They have an audio system in case you need to make a speech, and bathrooms on the other end of the rooftop. The bar tender made a very stiff cocktail, and their special watermelon juice w/ rum and fresh cucumber was a hit with many. The Peninsula hotel has a rooftop bar but its name "Salon de Ning" is a mystery. So I went to their website to find out more. I obviously have way too much free time. Here is a little background (lifted from the Peninsula's website) : "Salon de Ning is inspired by the tale of Madame Ning, a celebrated Shanghai socialite, avid world traveller and international hostess... Ning was a tireless collector of objets sourced during her journeys and her elegant 1930s-era New York penthouse inspired the eclectic design of Salon de Ning.. upon arrival on the 23rd floor, guests pass through a corridor adorned with Venetian mirrors and intricately carved Chinese screens leading to a glass-.." It ends there. Luckily I've been to Salon de Ning and can attest to the intriguing entry. As far as the bar goes, it's high quality. I ordered the "Ning Sling" and although it was expensive (even by NYC standards) it was a five star cocktail. Go here when the weather is nice - the terrace is the place to be IMO. Enjoy the view. The indoor bar is cozy, crammed with artwork and windows. It might be tough to find a perch outside, in which case, the windowed seats are just as desirable. Cocktails will run up the tab quickly ($21/ grey goose, $26+ for mixed specialty) - so choose wisely. CliffsNotes: Nice views/ambiance, poor service, expensive. A pretty perch high above the city, formerly known as Pen Top. Views in every direction, salty nibbles to rouse your thirst, and artistic cocktails to satiate your raging alcoholism (I kid, I kid...). Prices are a little out of this world, admittedly it was my first time seeing $25 cocktails in NYC. But let's face it you're at a hotel bar on the roof with views in each direction, hopefully you're not looking for a bargain... The weather happened to be gorgeous, making my evening here quite memorable. Without a couple snafus this lounge would have deserved four stars... As Salon de Ning became progressively busier (6:30pm) service became painfully slow. We also had an "incident" where a member of our party was given a drink in a martini glass that had a little bit of glass chipped on the rim (the chip was still hanging there). We got the drink replaced, but the new martini glass was also chipped (we gave up on returning drinks, but we were pretty annoyed with the whole ordeal). read more

We went for drinks to Salon De Ning tonight. First off, this place is a total fire hazard. There were about 25 people breathing each other's oxygen crammed into an elevator intended for 10. We got off on the roof level and waited for a table in the bar. One of the busboys was so rude and kept saying, "We're busy, we're busy!" Really? There were wall-to wall people, I know you're busy. Finally we sat down but there were five of us and two had no chairs. Our server finally came over after 20 minutes. We asked for two more chairs and her reply was, "Oh,um, we don't have any chairs." For $50 for a glass of champagne, I think you can afford some more chairs. So we just got up and left and our server didn't care. This is the worst service we have ever received anywhere. Great space and ambiance, horrible service experience. We sat at a table and waited 15 minutes before anyone even looked at us. We were finally greeted by a guy who said, "I'm not supposed to be your waiter, but I guess I can take your order." Boy, is that warm, enthusiastic welcome or what? lol Drinks came and a forth friend joined us late. I asked the same waiter for another cocktail and said that we needed the check as well, since we had a dinner reservation. Ten minutes later, cocktail comes, but no check. I wait longer and finally find the guy and ask him again for the check, again stressing that we really had to go. Another ten minutes goes by and the check arrives. After further inspection, I find that we were overcharged by $27. I get up and find the waiter outside on the patio and explain that we were overcharged and that I needed it corrected ASAP, this now 25 minutes after I first asked him for the check. He then responds to me by saying, "Well, I'm not supposed to be your waiter.". I politely told him that it wasn't my job to figure out who was supposed to be my waiter or not - he took our order and served us the whole night, so, as far as I was concerned, he was our waiter. You should never expose your guests to whatever internal chaos is going on in your business. Five minutes later, a woman arrives and drops the modified check on our table - no "I'm sorry", no "Thanks, have a good night." She just dumps it and runs. Here's the thing, if I'm at TGI Fridays, I can deal with it. If I'm at the Peninsula Hotel and paying $27 for a cocktail, then at least make the slightest attempt to provide mediocre service. read more

The rooftop bar is on the top floor of the Peninsula Hotel. Now granted this isn't the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, but it was still rather swanky. This place has amazing views of the city and I can't say no to beautiful views of the city. It was a warm, breezy night and being on a rooftop was just absolutely fantastic. Be forewarned, the cocktails here are extremely pricey. For $22, you could get into a Brooklyn party, have a few drinks, be completely inebriated and have some money left over for greasy pizza later. I ordered the Ning Sling, which is analagous to a Singapore Sling. I was in a South Asia kind of mood, and I have to honestly report that the cocktail was superb. We also had some prosecco but it wasn't as bubbly as I would have liked. This is a playground for those with expensive taste. I prefer a dark and dingey dive, but in life, compromises must be made. My friend is also a Republican. I am not sure how I stomached that, but I guess, like fungus, he eventually grew on me. A great place to impress a date who has collagen fillers and silicone parts. Not a place for a beer-guzzling, tree hugging liberal. But for one night, I pretended to be an "aristocrat." That says a lot about our friendship! read more

Came here with a group of friends for after-dinner drinks. What's better than an outdoor bar in the spring? We called ahead and managed to reserve a cabana, which was a huge plus. It was a beautiful night and there were a lot of people milling around the rooftop by the time we arrived (after 10:30 PM). Anyone who knows me knows that I like a stiff drink, and the cucumber martini I had was killer. What the hell was in that thing? Moonshine? Jet fuel? One martini did the trick, so the cost was really not an issue for me. I don't mind shelling out $18 for a cocktail, provided it knocks me on my ass. The drinks at Salon de Ning are pricey, but that is to be expected...you're paying for ambiance and it is Manhattan, after all. My entire party was pleased with their libations. If you plan to venture here with a larger group, it might be a good idea to reserve a cabana or a table. Plus, if your drinks are strong as ours were, you're going to have trouble standing up by the end of the night. You'll be thankful for a seat. read more

The views from here are absolutely amazing. Depending on what day you attend and where you plant yourself, you can have different vibes.There are 3 outdoor areas with views: Right Side: north balcony /ledge, the smallest of the three but my favorite view (view of the North including down 5th Ave which go all the way up along Central Park). Right Side: E/SE outdoor patio is smaller than the other patio but great views nonetheless. Definitely more social than the other patio but harder to grab a seat. Left Side: W/NW outdoor patio: older crowds, good for work meetings, plenty of tables for sitting down but they fill up. Of all the NYC rooftop bars, I think this is the most expensive of them all. I would say this is a classy place but not that pretentious (but a bit still depending on what side you sit on). All tables require a CC and charge a rooftop fee unless you are able to close out your tab and request to pay in cash instead. One thing this rooftop bar features that others don't is a cigar selection. Definitely go to the right had side. It's a more social crowd, has seats at the bar, and you can sit inside and still have a view outside (definitely a plus during super hot days as the other patio doesn't have umbrellas for all the tables). read more

Salon De Ning is the rooftop bar at The Peninsula Hotel in Midtown. Have been here a few times and always had an ok experience. There is an indoor bar area with barstools and a half dozen low cocktail tables and seats. Outside there is a small balcony where you can take your drink outdoors and look north toward Central Park. An additional terrace area with proper tables and chairs (never sat here, but might require reservations) is toward the eastern/southern exposures. On nice days in the spring/summer, the place will assuredly be jammed, particularly after work on Thursdays or Fridays. The crowd consists of after work office crowd plus many tourists. It can be difficult to maneuver through the space, hot, and hard to get a drink. The bar tenders work like dogs, but the space just gets overwhelmed. Drinks have always been good, and in the $20 range. It's a place to check out, but for a much better experience, try to come at slightly off peak times (i.e. mid/late afternoon). read more

I don't live in New York, but if I did, it would be a place I visited every so often, if that. $24 for a drink is pretty much unsustainable, methinks. But now onto the good. Whatever you order, it'll probably be fantastic and well-crafted. I got the blueberry sling. It was fantastic. I like sweet/sour drinks, and this drink delivered. Blueberry vodka, simple syrup, club soda, and other ingredients (which I've forgotten) in a glass, with a touch of foam = bliss. It doesn't hurt that you're looking out at the rest of the city. The crowd is pretty young and relaxed, so it's not super stuffy. This is a great place to unwind and have a drink or two, but those numbers add up pretty quickly! read more
