My friends and I stopped by here for breakfast while we were in town for a wedding. This place is an absolute hidden gem. Their sunrise skillet and hashbrowns are AMAZING. Service was always extremely fast AND friendly despite how full the place was. I no longer live in Virginia but I would travel to eat here again. I only wish there was one closer to me! read more

I'm so glad we found this little diner on our way back home. Service was good and the restaurant was clean, although a little chilly. The kids got waffles to split, and our server was happy to get us another one when their bellies weren't quite full. The home fries were only okay, but the eggs were perfectly cooked and the biscuit with gravy was tasty. Nicky's burger was pretty good. The chips are worth getting. Little shiny diner next to the Oak Tree Inn. We had high hopes, we're diner people. OK, we were seated quickly. Our orders were taken quickly, and food was brought out in a reasonable amount of time. Except for the toast... the toast came out when we were almost done with the meal, even though we were assured it would be "right out".I had my eggs over easy, and I like to dip my toast, so I was dissappointed. I had to eat me eggs while they were hot, I hate cold eggs. My guy would have liked some hot sauce with his omelette, but we could never catch our waitresses attention to ask for some, until she brought the toast, and by then why bother, he was just about done anyway. That said, the food was good, the kitchen staff knows what it's doing. My eggs were cooked perfectly, my bacon was perfect, his omelette was fresh and tasty. The coffee was good too, had a nice richness to it. Not one thing wrong with anything done in that kitchen. If Penny's works on their wait skills a little more, I'd happily give 4 stars. I'm a local and have given this place several chances and have yet to be the least bit impressed. So disappointed I am actually posting a review which is not something I typically do. Tried to have a nice lunch with my family today but it was anything but nice. The wait staff was unfriendly, even rude and didn't do a very good job even though they were not busy. Then we ordered what we wanted but were forced to accept what we were given which was not even close and told if we wanted it different we would have to wait thirty minutes. My kids pancakes were so tough I couldn't even cut them with a knife and the food we did get was so disgusting we left 90% of it on the table. It was painful to have to pay for this and we reluctantly left a tip only because the kids made a bit of the mess of the untouched food. Don't waste your time or money at this dump! read more

The place was FRIGID! I complained but they said it was controlled by "corporate"... Corporate?? Didnt look like a chain to me. The waitress took our order correctly, but the cook messed it up. The waitresses seem to double as cooks, also... The food was ok. Nothing to brag about for sure. It seemed like the waitresses were always apologizing to us and other customers. (Its so small you can hear EVERYTHING). It honestly seemed like the staff was embarrassed to work there. We go that way twice a year. Not much else around there. I'll bring snacks for that keg of our journey. Oh! Finding it! You have to REALLY look for the entrance too! It took us over 6 min or so to find it after going into the hamlet and turning around. If I could give this place a negative rating I would. Good is no better than what you could make yourself at home. Just paid $30 for two breakfast. My eggs, wasn't made right. Extra bacon for extra charge of $3 equals 3 pieces of bacon and extra toast is two piece total for another $3. Then a two small drinks equaling out to $5 total. The basic plate along is around $7. So if you looking to spend $30 on food go to the store. Buy yourself enough to feed twenty more people and cook yourself a breakfast because this place is trash. This diner was recommended and close to our location so we gave it a try. It was between 8-9 pm. It's in a good location very close to the local hospital with plenty of parking. It had the usual diner decor. The menu was plentiful. The staff was average. I gave the waitress kudos, she gave us the impression it wouldn't be the best meal since we were there after 8 pm. During the ordering process we discovered a lot of food wasn't available because of the cooking arrangements. I ordered the vegetable soup and side salad. Oh my! The salad must have been waiting in the refrigerator at least all day for me to order. The lettuce wasn't brown but was wilted. The tomatoes were wimpy. It had plenty of shredded cheese. The dressing was fine. The soup was more like a stew. I watched the waitress heat it in a microwave. I don't think it was made the same day. After a few bites I picked out the meat and potatoes. The cinnamon roll heated in the microwave was tasty. The other 3 people at the table had similar complaints with their meals. Unfortunately this wasn't good enough even for a second chance before 8 pm for us. read more

Penny's used to be a great place to eat. Especially for breakfast and late night cravings because they are open 24/7. NOW the food has become extremely overpriced and tastes as bland as eating a handful of saw dust. The best cook they had has left and the remaining cooks are less than mediocre at best. It has been a few weeks since I last wasted my time and way too much money eating there (almost $20 on two cheeseburgers and fries) I don't plan on ever returning. Definitely pass this place by. To be honest if you drive right past them and go to the Low Moor Grill inside the Exxon you would be much much much better off. Their food is excellent!! read more

The food wasn't cooked to order, when I ordered hash browns extra crispy they served them almost raw. And when I sent it back they threw tater tots in the deep fryer and served them like that. My sides were cold by the time I got to eat and wasn't able to eat with my family. And the cook was rude about it when she didn't cook it right the first time. But the waitress was sweet. This is the absolute worst place ever to eat anywhere. You are better off eating cold food out of cans and will be more satisfied. They took an hour to take our order and then brought out cold food and cold coffee and we said just keep it. We were told there was no manager on duty , just one cook and one waitress. The food was not fit to feed pigs. My wife was sick from waiting so long for food she could not eat and she is a diabetic and I had to rush her to Walmart for something to eat . We happily stumbled upon Penny's Diner on a recent trip to West Virginia. It is next to The Oak Tree Inn in Low Moor, VA. The diner is open 24 hours, serves a variety of personally prepared meals for very reasonable prices, and has excellent and friendly customer service. I really like how comfortably all of the staff interact. As an outsider, I really got a sense that everyone likes their job and each other. How refreshing! Since we stopped in for an early lunch, all of us ordered from that menu (though I saw other patrons' meals from the breakfast menu...pancakes, eggs, bacon, and waffles looked good). Things we liked: Wild Bill's Buffalo Cheeseburger, Mary Beth's Patty Melt on Texas toast rather than rye (son's preference), Philly Cheesesteak, and fries. We also tried a malt in each of the flavors...quality ice cream!!! Service was great: She made sure we each got exactly what we ordered and that it was made to order. The cook was busy talking with what appeared to be locals leaving for work when we came in, but she quickly shifted gears and focused on meal preparation as soon as our order was placed. The waitress gave us a complimentary order of fries when she perceived that the burgers were taking a long time. We accepted them, but we actually weren't put out about the time...it seemed very reasonable. Things we didn't like: Country Steak with Gravy. The salad that accompanied two burgers was low-quality iceberg lettuce with aged carrots and tomatoes. Dressing in packets was loaded with questionable ingredients and was horrible...so much red dye that it actually stained the linoleum tabletop! Also, they didn't have fresh lemons...only lemon juice in packets with weird added ingredients. Overall, a very pleasant (if somewhat aged) diner tucked neatly off I-64. Reasonable prices... this could be 5 stars except the staff was lackadaisical... long wait for waitress, special order was wrong (add mustard and no mayo is not too difficult in my opinion), drink refills had to be requested, long wait to check out...
