READ THIS. Chances are you're heading east or west on I80. Towns are few and far between but when they appear there are the typical chain restaurants that do not intrigue you. You see Penny's Diner on Yelp! or some other review site and think, "yea, great reviews, different, let's go there!" That's exactly the trap I fell in to. I love diners, dives and drive ins that sell great food. I have no qualms about consuming a fair amount of grease from time to time. But this place is simply awful. First, although it was not busy, from the time we placed our order to the time the first plate showed up at our table it was over 45 minutes. Now, I was up for a break from driving but not that long! When the food did begin to appear it was slopped on the plates and looked unappetizing. I don't remember what my wife had, some kind of mystery meat slathered in gravy and served with canned vegetables. I had the chicken fried steak skillet. The steak was all cut up in to pieces like a parent would for a 3 year old. The meat was mixed with canned vegetables and served with a couple eggs. It was so gnarly I could only eat a couple bites. To sum up, this place serves lousy food and does a poor job at that in terms of service. Oh yea, in the 45 minutes I waited for me meal my coffee cup was refilled only once. Applebee's would be better than this place... and I hate Applebee's. read more

We had breakfast at Penny's. The food was well prepared and in ample quantities. Where we were sitting we got to see Pete do his spatula magic on the big grill. Coffee was pretty average but not bad. I had the sunrise skillet, which was tasty and had a little kick from the jalapeños. My wife had eggs and biscuits. Penny's tends to be pretty noisy. Service was very competent. read more

We stop here on our road trips out west. It is the last stop with good food until Denver. Since it is 24 hours it doesn't matter what time we roll in to get an early breakfast and take a break on the road. The short order cooks are great - they think of creative options for your breakfast if you have a certain need. For example on our last stop we were looking for fresh jalapenos instead of jarred. They didn't have any on hand BUT they did have very small Thai chilies which the cook offered to use. Excellent swap. Coffee is great and you can also have that to go. Much better than the burnt truck stop option. The only downfall is the air conditioning is really cold - bring a polartech with you just in case. read more

We came in because of the high rating, but it was disappointing. No greeting, so we seated ourselves at 7 am on a Thursday morn, and later every group was greeted warmly. Don't bring your travel mug, the coffee to go is $4 each and Starbucks is close and tastier. The meal was good, my hash browns were crispy and so was the bacon. My mother, my aunt, my wife and I stopped here for lunch during our travels. We entered expecting fare similar to the fare in diners back home in the eastern U.S. The menu was very limited. This was a disappointment. We were hungry so we decided to stay. We were seated in a booth near the restrooms. The entire time we were eating the restrooms were sprayed and then cleaned. Penny's Diner is located right off the highway near the Whiskey Creek restaurant and Fort Cody. The parking is shared with the hotel behind the diner, and is pretty spacious. The staff was friendly enough and took our order when we were ready. Ok.. not when we were ready.. a family of five came in 10 minutes after us and the waitress promptly put in their order before returning to our table. The food was a bit lacking, however. I ordered a Philly Cheese Steak and got a distinguish Wal-Mart Great Value Angus steak instead. Not too surprising since Wal-Mart is only a block away from this establishment. Not a bad thing since I love all things Great Value, but it was a bit overcooked. It also came with fries and for a minute I forgotten what type I ordered. The front desk clerk at our hotel recommended it so we thought we would give it a try, wish we would of read reviews before going. Like others have said, it was not the cleanest place. My husband and I both ordered club sandwiches, I ordered mine with french fries and my husband with tater tots. While we were waiting for our food we noticed the cook kept coughing, she would turn her head but still not something you want to see or hear while your food is being prepared. The best thing about the sandwich was the bacon and the tomato, way too much mayo and the turkey looked like generic lunch meat from the grocery store, the sandwich was ok it's hard to screw up a club sandwich. I am a french fry person, I never turn them down even if I'm full I will power through and eat at least half of them. Let me just say I ate 2, the first one I couldn't taste I thought maybe it was fluke, so I tried another one and still no flavor whatsoever, nothing at all. I said something to my husband and he said the tater tots were the same way. I would much rather go to McDonalds at least I would get fries that taste good, stay away from this place, we wish we would of. read more

Stopped by for lunch on a long drive. Not knowing where to eat, we decided to give it try. It's near the Hwy and got good reviews on Yelp. The 50s decor is the highlight of this place-- it brings back the old diners charm! But the food was okay, nothing too special-- it was ordinary and not memorable. I've been to this diner previously for breakfast and after coming for a dinner I realize that I would only come for breakfast from now on. I had to grab my menus myself and it still took 10 minutes for our server to get to us. It was also so cold in the restaurant my wife and I could barely stand it without a doubt lower than 60° in the restaurant. Upon getting the food it was not over-the-top in anyway shape or form. But it was food and as I've had a good experience with their breakfast I will probably still come back I love the way the diner feels and just hope that I get a little bit better service next time. read more

Penny's diner has a wonderful atmosphere and staff! We went to the one in north platte for breakfast and the food was so good! The coffee is also great. I like to stay at the Oak Tree Inn when traveling on I-80 and I always breakfast here. There's nothing like a good breakfast to start the day and this place can deliver. It gives you the full diner experience. The service is great and I've even had a chance to chat with the cook after my order was delivered. This place always leaves me smiling. read more

First let me say the servers were all very nice, but let's face facts, the place wasn't clean and so it wasn't inviting ! There is nothing that a good cleaning wouldn't cure, floor, walls. Had breakfast here after a night at the hotel (Oak Tree Hotel) next door. The breakfast was included for free for both my wife and I with our hotel stay. It was delicious, we ordered the eggs, bacon and toast plate and the french toast with sausage plate. The service was fast, the staff was wonderful and were were both very surprised at the high quality of the hotel and the included breakfast! I highly recommend this to any weary traveler or local in North Platte. read more

This tiny little diner caught my eye because of it's amazing location off of the I-80. It is a classic looking diner based from the 50's that has a great view of the freeway. The service inside was also great as well. Our server Barbara was amazing and took great care of my party throughout the visit. The was great also. I ordered the buffalo burger which was amazing. I would definitely recommend that burger to anyone. So overall this place earned to 5 stars because of its amazingness across the board. A great place to eat right of the freeway. read more

It was the poor attitude of the cook in the morning that got my attention. He brings me some coffee without silverware or cream and then proceeds to go about his business like I'm not even there. After that, he served my breakfast consisting of oil soaked eggs and undercooked hash browns. We split the huge truly homemade meatloaf special & it was more than enough. The mashed potatoes were instant, but they clearly used enough real butter to make them good.
