Our new coworker, who is a Yuma local, recommended the cinnamon rolls at Penny's Diner! He said they were the best! Of course, we had to grab them to eat back at our hotel! We warmed them up a little before we took our first bite and omg they were SO good! I munched on half of it that same night and ate the rest for breakfast this morning (Wednesday, 9/1)! Do take note of that, my friends. | The Ambiance | This is an archetypal 50's-style diner, a black-and-white tiled, chromium submarine full of 20th-century memorabilia and the sounds of Elvis, The Beach Boys, Martha and alllll those Vandellas in the background. Forgive me, but this automatically serves to shave a couple points. Make no mistake, this is a happy niche for some. It's nostalgic, it's fun, but it's just not my style. I'm also not a fan of booths -- they are a bane to one's posture, and they absorb the smells of thousands of patrons from decades past. I prefer chairs. Finally, being a 24-hour establishment, I was immediately skeptical about the quality and stock of the restaurant, and regrettably, rightly so. | Make-Your-Own Omelet | In the classic losing struggle that I impose upon all other breakfast restaurants, I ordered an omelet! I created mine with bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, and American cheese. However, according to the server, my order could not be accommodated because the only vegetables available this morning were onions. Thus, my omelet consisted only of bacon, onions, and cheese. This meal was accompanied by hash browns and wheat bread. Service was quick. When my plate arrived, I noticed two things -- perhaps you noticed them too. First, the omelet was well-made. No breakage, neither under nor overdone. My compliments to the chef. Second, this entire meal was coated in oil, spray, butter, or whatever substance was used to cook it. Look at that shine, my dear friends. You might just be able to see your reflection. Indeed, while there were some distinct flavors in the omelet (I liked the bacon; it reminded me of the home-cooked stuff), every bite mirrored the last with strong overtones of pure fat. My stomach has been a little dizzy since, even three hours later as I write these remarks. The hash browns, as you might guess, were flavorless. The toast was fine, albeit not 100% whole wheat. We all know the difference between enriched flour and the real stuff, right? | Verdict | I have unequivocally had better, of course, and for that I should be giving Penny's Diner two stars. However, I'm bumping it up to three because the service was good. Our server marked down our check because of the missing omelet ingredients, and for that I am deeply grateful. I also commend her for keeping the common surfaces clean. Additionally, she offered to heat the carafe of coffee when another patron noted that the coffee was lukewarm. Upon tasting mine, I agreed it was not as hot as it should have been. However, I also prefer a fresh batch over a heated carafe (new coffee versus old coffee, there is no contest). It's good hospitality at Penny's Diner, but the quality of the food is dubious. There are not many breakfast establishments in Yuma, my friends. I went here a few years ago to try the date shakes they advertise in the window. I went in with my wife and then infant daughter. When we walked in the staff was huddled at a booth with some shady looking folks. They stared at us uncomfortably as though we didn't belong there. We got the date shakes and left but this left a bad taste in my mouth as it appeared that the customers and employees were hard drug users. This was my impression. This morning i went in, heck, i will give them another shot. I walked in, the lady behind the counter was stuff her face with food and with a mouth full of food told me to sit where ever i wanted. I sat at the bar and asked for a menu, she said i could scan the qr code and pull up the menu on my phone. I asked again and said i would prefer not to use my phone, she pointed at the ceiling to and bunch of poorly handwritten text behind me and said the menu was written in the wall/ceiling. I left. Very bad. After checking in we were asked to wait outside. A couple after us could wait inside. Got seated first and their order taken, all while we waited for some attention like menus and drinks. Since we decided to share, we had to ask for extra plate and a knife. Did not get napkin so we shared the one we got. They had a note you couldn't stay longer than 30 minutes after food was served. We waited for our bill and got tired of waiting so we walked up to register to pay. No thank you for coming. We did not leave a tip. Of course we felt bad as we always tip. But I remembered we are use to getting great service in a timely and fair manner. We should have went with our first instincts and left as it just got worse. Needless to say we will never go back. Unfortunately I wasn't as impressed . I was impressed with the service. They are really nice here . The food is average . It wasn't bad and it wasn't great . The place was busy and that is a plus for a local place. How ever after watching the Cook use her hands to grab raw meat and throw on the grill, then grab bread and put it in the toaster, and then handle an omelette and flip it with her hands all with the same gloves on should have been a first warning. Once we did receive our food my wife's plate had a hair about 9 inches long entangled within her hashbrowns scramble. We are SO thankful to Brittany for taking such good care of us even when it was busy. She was very kind and kept a big smile on her face even as she rushed to prepare our orders. She was a wonderful server! The reason I'm giving Penny's three stars is because they ran out of big straws for their shakes and gave customers soda straws. Have you ever tried sucking an ice-cream shake out of a small straw? It's impossible. Also, this isn't the first time we visit Penny's and they appear to be very understaffed. So in Yuma on a sunny Spring day. Yuma gets a bad rap but we like it. It was our first time at Penny's. Reminds me of my childhood spending summers in New Jersey. Upon entering was greeted by 2 ladies. Had to wait about 3 minutes for a table. Maria took our order right away. All of us wanted Belgium waffles but the waffle maker was broke. So all ordered the pick 3. A bargain at $3.99. Choices are a plenty. Biscuits and gravy, hash browns, eggs, french toast, and all breakfast meat, your choice of 3. Depending on where you are seated you can watch the cook prepare your food. It arrived quickly and hot. Its breakfast, not a lot can go wrong with it. We all ate with no complaits except the bacon was a little too crispy for our liking. Penny's is a great friendly, clean hometown spot I would visit again. Breakfast with beverages for 3 people without tip was under $20. If we could have ordered the waffles it would be 4 stars. read more

If you want frozen food and and mean service this is for sure your place to go. They were out of all vegetables corndogs were frozen Also onion rings are frozen pickles were frozen. The " we are out of" list was huge starting with Pepsi or Coke whatever it is out of vanilla ice cream out of chocolate ice cream out of whip cream that place is just running on frozen food and probably its last few dollars that's why they can only buy food to go day by day. Face masks are not mandatory in Arizona but it is in a restaurant which is fair but I would have facemasks available for customers who might not have one with them for $.10 each. The hotel next-door was kind enough to give us one. The cook as well as the waitress could not be more unpleasant. Hopefully that restaurant is owner by the cook and the waitress because if it goes out of business I would hate to have somebody else run my company into the ground. We walked in and the server immediately told us that we are welcome to sit and wait, but she won't be taking orders or serving anyone for at least 25 minutes. We then waited well over 5 minutes for them to finish chatting before we were provided menus and for our drink order to be taken (we were the only customers there) . My hubby and I had breakfast at Penny's for the first time several months ago. There was nothing "very" good, nor "very" bad about it, just average, therefore I didn't feel the need to Yelp it. I try hard to give accolades whenever I can. Especially to small businesses. And if it's not "bad" then I refrain from a Yelp review because I don't want to unnecessarily sway someone away from eating there (if it wasn't "bad"). Based on this experience at Penny's I'm changing my M.O. and will be doing a lot of reviews, even if it's just a 2 or 3 stars. Anyway, we hadn't gone back (nor did we plan to) since there were other eateries within blocks of Penny's all offering much better food at the same price. However, yesterday the restaurant that we stopped at for a late breakfast had quite a wait and we had a movie to catch so we drove 1/2 a block to Penny's. We thought we'd give it another try since we were in a hurry and there weren't any cars in the parking lot (we should have heeded that clue). Husband ordered a sausage & eggs breakfast. I decided on a burger, and the waitress offered fries, tater tots or steamed veggies as the side. I requested the veggies. Our food came out in a reasonable length of time and looked good. My burger had a thick patty, served open faced, with lettuce, pickles, and tomato on the side. My veggies were in a small bowl, and were obviously frozen (not fresh) mixed vegetables that were way overcooked and tasteless, but that was pretty much what I expected so I ate them first. (Vegetables are good for us, right? so I ate them). Then I assembled and cut my burger in half. Uh-oh! Way undercooked! To the point that it "bled". You could see in the middle that the meat was raw. Blood actually trickled down onto the bun as I cut into it. Gross! Especially since E-Coli easily gets its start in undercooked ground beef. The waitress offered to have it redone, or did I want something else? I said that a "re-do" would be fine. Within minutes she brought back THE SAME BURGER! On the same bun! Could it look any more UNAPPETIZING on the now-soggy bun that I had already spread with mustard and ketchup, and the now-wilted lettuce. I was taken aback and sat there for a beat before cutting into each half to check the redness of the meat. One half was still too red for my taste, and the other half "done enough" but I couldn't get myself to eat it. When the waitress brought our check I asked her to take the uneaten/untasted burger meal off the tab. She said she needed management approval. Ok. I can understand that. We could see her talking to a woman seated at the counter and after waiting several minutes, eventually the woman came over to us and asked "how are you?". I very nicely and quietly explained about the burger and asked that it be removed from our tab. She smiled, and without another word she grabbed the tab and walked away. We sat, and waited, and waited. What's the problem? Why does subtracting my burger lunch from the tab take so long? Finally our waitress came back, gave me the tab and pointed out that the burger lunch had been removed BUT they had charged me $3.00 for a side of vegetables! I was stunned! The waitress apologized and said she was so sorry! I believe she was. We paid the tab, leaving a good tip for the waitress (not her fault) and on our way out I stopped at the managers perch and let her know how aghast and stunned we were at being charged for the "side" since the burger itself was inedible. AND it was all about the way she and Penny's had handled the situation that could have made the difference between a very dissatisfied customer, OR a customer walking away hungry, but not totally outraged about the experience. IF the "redo" had been a fresh new burger, properly cooked, that would have nipped it in the bud. Since that didn't happen, she should have sincerely apologized and taken the meal off of the bill. Instead not only did she not apologize, she didn't utter a word to us after I explained why I couldn't eat the burger and wanted it removed from our tab. AND the slap in my face came from them charging us for a side order of vegetables! If I hadn't eaten those soggy veggies to begin with, I certainly wouldn't have eaten them once I cut into that bloody burger! Penny's obviously needs to train this particular manager (at least) in what makes good customer service, AND give the cook a meat probe and a lesson in food safety. When I finished explaining to the manager (yet again in case she didn't understand the first time), WHY the meal was refused, and asked "how could she justify" charging us for the vegetables, and ending by telling her that we wouldn't be back, her only response was a smile. WHAT?! Let me add that during the whole time that I talked to her, both at our table and at the counter area on our way out, I kept my voice quiet and reasonable, so as not to cause a scene.
