I became a Penzey's customer via the internet nearly 15 years ago -- and didn't get to a brick and mortar store until early in 2003 on a trip to Cleveland. Since then, they have expanded their fleet of stores to almost every major city in the US -- and there's no question why this happened. Penzey's sells the freshest, purest, and greatest variety of flavors in the spice world. If you're still buying your spices and dried herbs at a grocery store -- you need to rethink your priorities. I carry 3 of their small jars in my purse at all times -- it's THAT good. When I moved to the Pacific NW, Penzey's was one of my first stops (since the people who packed my kitchen managed to lose ALL my spices (!) -- the result was one of the biggest purchases I've ever made for my kitchen. Real spices/seasonings are not cheap -- they are, after all, the REAL spice of life. Whether it's the heavenly cinnamon from Viet Nam -- so naturally sweet that it makes cinnamon toast without the need for added sugar; or the Galena Street seasoning blend that takes the most unassuming white fish filet from bland to blazing in nothing-flat -- every bottle and jar in the shop is a winner. I honestly have never bought anything from Penzey's that I didn't love and use. The people that work here in this shop were as aghast as I was at the thought of a spice-less kitchen in a new house, and walked me through the shop, helping replace my foodie-fodder. My must-have list includes the outrageously expensive blend called "Fox Point" -- and the modest but all important chipotle powder. Their chili con carne blend makes a fast and dirty pot of chili or chili-beans, and their Five Spice is the basis for all good stir-fries. Adobo seasoning is the cornerstone of good guacamole (use their recipe on the label for the best novice guac) and their flake kosher salt is perfect for the finish at the table. Really -- stop using the stuff in those jars you got as a wedding present 17 years ago. It's not the same. And Penzey's is the place to learn what food is supposed to taste like. Great shop. Deplorable customer service from at least half the staff, most of them have very little cooking experience. Many of the spices have added salt and/or sugar--there is sugar in their vanilla extract! The way they give away products, one wonders at the freshness of them and their ability to sell them in a reasonable amount of time. Savory Spice Shop at 7857 SE 13th Avenue is light years ahead of these people. If you care about the quality of your food, go there and save yourself the frustration. read more

So disappointed in this location. I understand COVID and everyone is learning new processes, but customer service is still important. Placed an order online, never received the call stating my order was ready. I decided to call three business days later and the phone was off the hook (tried four different times). I figured I would go to the store, two other customers were waiting outside trying to place their order online. A couple if not a few employees inside, but no one by the door. Called the number again and this time it rang. An employee answered and I explained my situation. Fortunately my order was ready but it was rudely explained that a message was left for me three days ago. I apologized I never received it, I was rudely told a message was left. I said regardless, I'm outside and would like my product that I was already charged for. Honestly had I not been charged, I would have aborted the entire experience. Maybe this location is in disarray as I have ordered from other locations and was treated as a valuable customer. I can honestly say I will not be back to my neighborhood store and will most likely try a local spice shop versus a nationwide establishment. read more

I love Penzeys Spices. It really spices things up in the kitchen (pun intended) and brings out the inner chef in me. Their spices are top notch and I will never buy spices at a grocery store again. It's dangerous coming here even if it's just to buy a gift for someone or to refill on a spice because you end up buying wayyy more than you planned to. They have box sets which make gift-giving easy and by each spice there is a jar filled with it which you can smell prior to purchasing. My ultimate favorite spices are the Sunny Paris and Mural of Flavor which are both salt free. Hard to believe but it legit makes my salmon, chicken, potatoes, and eggs taste 10x better! Ruth Ann Muskego is good too, so is their world's best pepper and hot chocolate mix. They offer lots of free goodies from time to time and coupons via their catalog or if you sign up for their emails. One of the few places I can find Blade Mace!....actually, the ONLY place I've been able to find it. Great assortment of any spice or spice blend your heart desires! The staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and answered every question I had. Next time I need to find a gift for the 'hard to buy for", this will be my stop. I think I am addicted to the 'mural of flavor' salt free spice mix that they have here. I have to keep coming back and buying more of it. This last time they also gave me a sample of some other Basil, and a mix for eggs and the like and I really like that mix too. Penzeys is a terrific company that really encourages home cooking and a love of sharing meals with friends and family. This store had the most wonderful smells before the pandemic, so exotic and appetizing. Staff was helpful and friendly. If we can work together to defeat this virus, maybe someday we all can enjoy browsing again. For now, I'll order my Penzey's spices online and keep on cooking!  I'll also stock up on some $50 gift cards for $35 each for Christmas gifts, along with some cute mini spice packs. read more

The only reason you would go here is for spices, and that's what they have and lots of them. So basically you go around the store and use the smell jars. What you smell is what your food is going to taste like depending on how much you add to the food. I heart this place!!!!!! A friend referred me here as I cook with unusual spices that are either hard to find or so freaking expensive I just dont cook those dishes often. When I walked in here and explained what I was looking for the sweet elderly lady pointed me directly to what I needed. She was impressed with the types of food that I make and that I knew the correct ingredients for it. She then showed me the rest of the store. Cinnamon from all over the world, spices laid out in a way in which it is easy to find. The elderly lady that was working I really wanted to claim as my own grandmother she was that sweet. I spent a good hour in the store soaking up everything they had, smelling the spices and asking question after question after question to a lady that had the patience of a saint. I went in for one spice and walked out with many. The prices a decent and some of it is even a steal. I can not wait to start cooking with my new spices. read more

Fill time on curbside pick up orders is inconsistent. The website doesn't give any indication of how long before you can pick up until after you've placed your order, and then it says their goal is 24 hours. Ordered curbside pick up a month ago, and had a phone call within 24 hours. This time, waited well over 24 hours, then called to see about when to expect order to be done, and they had not even printed the ticket yet. Was told they are having trouble filling orders on time and to expect another 2-3 DAYS before it would be ready. I planned a trip to Portland around this order, and now have to make 2 trips. I would expect a courtesy email or updated website if they are having this much trouble fulfilling orders in a timely manner. read more

I love Penzeys! I don't buy their pre-mixed spice blends, but love their individual spices! Roasted garlic powder is one of the best things on the planet.. Probably not THE best spices in the world, but definitely above anything you can get at the super market. I will continue to purchase my spices from them! read more

I have been mail ordering form Penzeys for years. It is really nice to be living close to one of their stores. The herbs and spices are amazing and their vanilla is top notch (a bit on the expensive size) but worth it. I actually drove a bit farther to visit this location instead of battling traffic and looking for parking at the downtown Portland location. read more

There is indeed a reason this place gets all five star reviews. First, the store itself is clean and laid out very well making finding things very easy. I love the different options for buying sizing of each spice and the variety is staggering. I was just not prepared. A friend gave me a gift card for my birthday so I had a great deal of fun finding new stuff to try. While I was wandering around the staff was not pushy at all but would offer assistance and be clear they are there the second you need help for anything. I was listening lightly around the store also and wow, they know the stock! Some stores you go into and asking a question is a bit of a joke or a regret - not here! I also found some spices I have never seen anywhere! The prices are amazing as well which I was very surprized about figuring that I would pay an arm and a leg but no...they just earned a very loyal new shopper with me for all my spice needs!! I cannot imagine a better spot either with them right next to Trader Joes I can do my grocery and spice shopping! read more

I went inside this store for the first time today and I am hooked. I love cooking and to have the luxury of wandering and sniffing at all the spices to compare( same spice might not smell the same based on their origin). I went home and looked in my cabinet and have some doubts with all the spices that I have. Time to let go of the old's and get the new best quality to cook new meals. So excited. we stopped here on a lark, on our way back from powell's books. i sniffed pretty close to every spice concoction in the place and decided on a few to buy. they threw in two extra free spice mixes for what turned into a great deal, in sum total. all of the spices have been a big win in my kitchen so far. sunny paris herb blend, for instance, has been perfect in eggs, salad dressing and peas. northwest fire, bangcock blend, and sate...all excellent spice blends as well. my husband spent many years in asia and he said the singapore blend was spot-on, when he smelled it. the quality is high, the prices are surprisingly low. my only suggestion for improvement would be if they were to make and carry a smoked malt. i resorted to going online to buy it. edit: went in again today to get more sunny paris, and the saleslady was very helpful when i asked about what to use on pork. i asked to taste old world blend, and she told me to just shake a bit into my hand, which i recommend anyone do when in doubt--the flavor isn't apparent just from smelling these blends. wound up buying that and a few others, including sate, which i've been using on lamb. once again, got a free jar thrown in, this time it was cinnamon sugar. i pass on the straight up herbs, black pepper, etc., things i can get at costco, for instance, and just focus on the blends i couldn't plausibly replicate in my kitchen. and penzeys has plenty of those. read more

I had been wanting to go to this store for a long time but didnt want to drive all the way to SE Portland. Finally I saw that there is a penzeys in BEAVERTON! Yipee! So i took the bus and max there, because it's still too far too drive for me. I was kinda let down...i guess I built it up in my mind about how it was going to be. Anyway the store seemed more like a "fake pressboard mallish corporate store" than I thought it would be. It didnt smell wonderful like i thought it would for one thing, although they do have sample jars of everything for you to open and smell. I didnt find the staff terribly helpfull either. Previous reviewer said something about being able to buy smaller amounts of spices that you might only use a few times...yes you can but the smaller amounts are only slightly less expensive because they come in a small jar that they are actually charging you for as opposed to a factory sealed ziplock type bag of the larger quantities. Also the packages are not freshness dated. When I asked the clerk about it she said they are good for two years which seems like too long to me, and you dont know how long they have been in the back storeroom, and since I was the only one in the store, Im guessing they dont turn over spices very fast. I think a person would be better off to orderonline and get fresher spices, after going here to smell everything. I'm glad I went to this store but I wasn't wowed by it...but if I was in the area I wouldnt hesitate to go in and browse especially since I love Trader joes next door. Trader Joes prices are more realistic, and their Taco Mix is way better. In my humble opinion. read more

I'd never heard of Penzeys before moving here, and now it's the only place I get my spices. The first thing I ever got was Sandwich Sprinkle, and I put it on everything! I like that once you buy the jar, you can get a re-fill bag for cheap and save $$ without having to buy the jar each time. I walked in needing only Chinese five spice powder. I left with three other spices. They have a wide variety if spices, but it's not totally comprehensive. The arrangement of the spices are grouped by type, i.e. herbs, rubs, spices, curries, etc. And the prices are NOT outrageous, what a plus! read more

There was one complaint about the place not smelling like a "spice shop," but that is because this is a nationwide chain and everything is prepackaged. If you want a shop like "Market Spice" in Seattle's Pike St. Market, then the closest you might get is the "Savory Spice Shop" in Sellwood or Bend. But, this is the best mix sets of spices that you will find in Beaverton or the whole westside Metro area... And, being only a few block south of the end of the Red Line, much easiser to get to than Savory Spice in Sellwood. read more

LOVE it here. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. The product is incredible. Quality, reasonably priced, and you can purchase what you need in several different sizes. This makes it great for those times you want to try something new. If you are buying a present for someone who loves cooking, try one of their boxed sets. Every time I give one for a birthday or Christmas present, Penzeys gains a new customer - people love it so much. Last year for Christmas I gave a friend a $30 boxed set for basic cooking. I was first introduced to Penzey's a few years ago when an out of town relative sent us a generous gift box. I was so impressed with the quality of the spices and the packaging it came in, that I went on a quest to explore Penzey's further. It turned out that we actually had a Penzey's in Portland, but it was quite a drive for me to go out to SE 82nd when I needed more Cinnamon. The love of Penzey's has caught on because there are now more locations within a mile or two of my home. Yay! This is a fun store to get your creative cooking juices flowing. They have so many varieties of pepper, salt, curries, cinnamon, herbs and amazing exotic blends. They come in glass jars of varying sizes depending on your needs. You can sample (with your nose) every single item in the store, as they have a jar of each out on every shelf. You can really get a sense for what you may or may not like by taking a good whiff of something. They will also mail you savings coupons and recipes if you sign up for their mailing list. read more
