Unlike, say, a shop that sells fragrances, where your senses are assaulted when you walk in, Penzey's keeps their samples in airtight glass containers, so you can browse with your eyes, and then open individual jars to see how they smell. Products are well labeled, and wandering around is always a pleasure. When we inquired about one item that we had not spotted, one of the associates immediately came out from behind the central checkout counter to escort us to the desired item. I love everything about Penzeys Spices and everything they stands for as business philosophy: conscientious care for humanity! Since the destruction rise and ongoing onslaughts of MAGA, Penzeys Spices is one of the few businesses bravely remaining steadfast with their commitment of care to their customers and the community they serve instead of craving under the pressure to move toward authoritarianism. I recently purchased their Hug Blanket, $24.95 for myself to continue showing them support! I have been using it everyday on my couch. An entire store dedicated to spices, Penzey's has an impressive variety and most come in an assortment of sizes which is very convenient. Quality of the spices is high and you can absolute taste the difference both in savory meals and sweet treats. When I wander around, there are always new items that I discover, like today I found Purple Bits of Love, tiny freeze dried pearls of purple potatoes to add to special dishes for a pop of color and flavor. Very unique! And of course all the usual suspects. Some of my faves are: - Mexican Vanilla, a must for baking - Smokey paprika - Safron - Fenugreek - Dried shallots, onion & garlic. Spices are above & beyond amazing..You can find all the staples you need here + a ton of delicious blends (they constantly come out with new ones). Prices are very reasonable & they're often running promos which is really nice. It's just a fabulous company and the customer service is excellent. Always a great visit with promotions I'll actually use, like a $50 gift card for $35. Yes, please! This week was a free 2.5 oz jar of choice. How can you argue with that? People who complain that the store is empty of customers are crazy. You mean you prefer to shop in a crowded place? No thanks. From what I understand, their stores are also online fulfillment centers, so most customers are at home, waiting for quality spices to be shipped to them. I really appreciate the opportunity to buy in bags to save the cost of an extra glass bottle. I've got plenty of those at home. read more

If you love to cook, you need to visit Penzey's! I've been purchasing their spices for years now and site visits are always a treat. Penzey's offers an enormous selection of single herbs and spices as well as spice blends. And they offer sniffing jars of every single product so you know what you're getting before you buy it. For example they have around 6 different Italian-ish herb mixes but they are all quite distinct once you smell them. When I visited I was the only shopper in the store, which can sometimes be quite awkward, but the employees were great. They were friendly and available but left me alone while I browsed the store at my own pace. Some of my favorite herb/spice mixes: Sandwich Sprinkle, Sunny Paris, Bouquet Garni, and Mural of Flavor. My family has a favorite Chirstmas cookie - Mexican Chocolate Icebox cookies. Every year I go to Penzeys to pick up the spices that make this a favorite: cinnamon, cayenne, and dutched cocoa powder. I was surprised when I walked in at just how empty (of customers) this branch of Penzeys was. Every single other Penzeys I've ever been in had customers and the staff is always friendly and displayed exemplary knowledge of spices and cooking. (I'm talking largely about the location in the Pearl) But not this Penzeys. Super unfriendly staff and not very knowledgeable about what they even sell. Just terrible customer service. Regardless, with very little help from the staff, I powered through and selected a few spices. $20+ for a few spices that would cost less than $10 combined at Trader Joe's, but there were a couple in particular I wanted to try here. Every single time I've been to other Penzeys, they always offer sample spice packets or even jars to paying customers. This has always been a big plus, as I usually find something that I really like, but didn't even know about (usually an interesting spice blend). Its part of the business model and honestly contributes to why stuff is more expensive here. But that just wasn't happening here and today. In fact, I inquired about it as literally nothing was being offered to me. "Do you guys have any samples, like usual?", I asked. I was told I just missed a promotion that ended yesterday. OK. So I asked well, will there be promos in the future? She said oh yeah, there is one starting tomorrow. I then asked, so the one day I come in and buy is the one and only day you're not passing out samples? Yup. And I suppose you can't just slide me an advance of what's literally going to be samples tomorrow. Nope. That's just bullshit. I regret now not putting back my purchased items and leaving. But as I said, there was some stuff I really wanted in my selections. Like I said, when I walked in, I was surprised when I walked in at just how empty this place was. After 1 use the spices in the jar become a solid lump that needs to be broken up with a fork or blender to use again. They quickly lose their flavor. Think this is due to the poor quality of the jars which are allowing moisture in which is causing them to lump and clump. This has happened with every spice I have bought there. Many, many of them. 25+ spices. I give up. read more

They have HUGE selection of various herbs & spices! If you are looking for quality herbs & spices, particularly something you can't find in your local grocery store, Penzeys in the place! They even have several of their own spice and/or herb blends, many of which are salt-free, and all of which are fantastic (my go-to fave is their "Murals of Flavor" herb blend which is salt-free, too). The employees are always very helpful, too. They have locations across the U.S. and you can also order online Their website also has great recipes and they have some recipes printed out in the store, too. I love that for most spices & herbs they have different sizes to choose from so if you only need a little for a recipe you don't have to buy a full size jar and if it is something you use a lot you can buy it in bulk size. I feel lucky to live near a brick and mortar Penzey's location since their spices are among the best. They do basics really (Oregon, basil, bay leaves, many kinds of cinnamon) as well as spice blends like curries. Their curbside pick up is great. I ordered some Tsardust Memories and vanilla yesterday and got a phone call within two hours to arrange pick up. Once you get to the store, you pick up your item. The only thing I would change is that I wish that their associates were aware of the fact that not everyone drives to the store when giving pick up instructions. In fact, there's a lot of bus lines and bus passengers. So, when the employee I spoke to told me where to park it got me really confused for a minute and thinking that I'd need to have a car in order to pick up my spices. I went into the store in clackamas for a spice I needed I have been a long time customer. I went to the counter and the cashier refused to ring up my purchase until I put a mask on. I refused she was extremely rude and insisted I put a mask on. I explained to her I just wanted to make my purchase. she again refused. I guess penzeys are taking the terrible customer service approach for their business!! I suggest they take a closer look on how they treat their customers if they want people to continue to buy their products...perhaps treat their customers as humans and not a tyrannical spice store! read more

There were only two people in the store the non-speaking lady at the register and myself. The lack of engagement, desire to assist and share information was truly lacking. Save your time and money. I would only recommend you visit this establishment if you would like to be treated like you are bothering someone who is holding up a counter. Staff is very condescending and rude. If they will even engage you at all. I've tried to overlook any questionable experiences I've had at Penzeys, and almost gave up on them a few years back when the owner(s) sent out a mass e mail about certain political views. Like what? What do politics have to do with being a customer buying your product? But I've had enough. The customer service is sorely lacking at this company and I'm done with them. I'll gladly drive to their competitor in Sellwood. Which has consistently been leaps and bounds more pleasant to visit. Great store. They always have the spices I need when others dont. Very friendly. I ordered a little jar of gumbo slice that can't be found anywhere else. So when I can't find what I need I always drive down here (30mins away). If you need any spices and this is close. I recommend coming here even if it's a little more $$. I love Penzeys. Simple as that. What can be wrong with good spices at good prices and then you've got the selection! Ever since I moved to Portland, I got addicted to the Pearl location of Penzeys. Yes, I realize that they have a website, but going to the store and seeing what they have, smelling the various rubs and individual spices and being able to purchase small jars on the cheap. Also if you get on their mailing list, you get coupons for all sorts of free spices or rubs (of which I now have several). Well, Penzeys opened a location down in Happy Valley and I happened to be in the area. I never really travel down here, it's too far, but why not take a wander. Penzeys is located in a strip mall just up the street from Clackamas Town Square. If you know where Michael's and Ross are located, then you can find Penzeys. This location is a bit larger than the Pearl location, but all the same good stuff. I picked up some Vietnamese cinnamon. Nice place, if I lived closer, I'd be back more often. Enjoy. read more

Love the selection and hard-to-find spices all in one store. A bit on the expensive side. Now they won't do any business except picking up orders at the door that one phones or orders on-line. The poor heavyset gal inside trembles when she hands out the order. Pitiful. The originators are apparently mixing their own spices so that might explain the high prices. I used to shop at this penzey location clear back when they first opened over by winco in 2003. Just left there today completely disappointed by the employees that just hang out at the register. When I first went to penzey, employees would be sharing their spice knowledge with you and tips. Today, the employees act like they don't want to be there and you are annoyance. The spices were all mixed up so employees aren't even paying attention to their shelves and what's stocked on them. No one informed us of the dollar spice. The Beaverton location has a place for you take your bottles to be recycled. This location tells you no. Rudely no. Do it yourself. I don't know what happened to penzey where they act like they hate you coming in. It's bad enough they got political. It's expensive enough then to deal with that too? Why have a business if you aren't going to encourage business and suggestive selling and creating a fun spice experiences? Complete disappointment read more

I'm only giving 1 star because there's no other lower option. We went in on Sunday, 03/26/16, around 11:30 AM. There were two women employees standing behind the counter chatting about their personal lives. There were no other customers in the store and they could NOT even say "hello" or "let us know if you need any help". Just glanced at us and went on with their chatter. We were in there for at least 15 minutes w/o acknowledgement. Picked up a few items and worked our way to he very cold counter. The gal with longer hair could barely muster up anything to say except to give us our total. Customer service in this place is non-existent. Hey ladies, guess what, manners are free all day long! This USED to be a staple in my pantry. Unfortunately the owner of this company believes it's morally acceptable to shove his political views down the throats of his loyal customers. What has happened to Penzey's in Clackamas? I understand Covid has changed the shopping experience, but you can still give great customer service. And if you have to do business over the phone, all the more reason to watch your tone. I have now been sniped at 5 times in the past 3 months, i.e. every time I've talked to them. I even ordered enough to get free shipping so I'm not sure why I put myself thru having to deal with these people. I'm the customer. Do not be rude to me when I'm trying to set a time to pick up my spices that I already paid for. The employees at this store have mentioned each time how busy they are filling orders. OK let me help you out. I'll either go back to ordering on line or better yet move my business to Savoury in Sellwood. I used to love wandering around the store but the last 2 times I was in the Clackamas store pre- Covid I felt like I was interrupting the 2- 3 employees. Excellent shopping experience from the minute you walk in the door. Their customer service is unparalleled. They can be as hands-on helpful or as unobtrusive as you require. They sell four or five different kinds of cinnamon. Different kinds of cinnamon. I had no clue that cinnamon came in "kinds." But they have little info cards about each one, and they have smelling pots so you can compare and contrast. They also sell "double strength" vanilla extract. The theory is that you can use half the amount a recipe calls for, but c'mon - if you love vanilla like I do, you're putting in the regular amount, double strength. This is a terrific place to put together gift baskets for cooks in your life. Plus, with its glamorous Clackamas location, you're not fighting the parking wars that you would be if you chose to visit their Pearl District location. read more

My boyfriend went to pick up citric acid, which apparently they do not carry. When he walked into the store the woman at the counter made eye contact with him and purposefully then ignored him and asked a woman at the back of the store if she needed help. He looked around and could not find it so he got in line. When he reached the counter again he asked the same woman if they carried citric acid and she responded "No but we get asked that a lot." While I do not fault a store for not carrying every product you would think that if you have been asked "a lot" for a specific product you would start to carry it. Furthermore if someone walks into your store you great them you do not purposefully ignore them. We will not be returning. Let's say you are making a new recipe, especially to impress he or she of the fair gender whom you are delicately trying to seduce and get in the sack, and you realize "OH NO! I don't have Burmese ruby roasted cumin with python scale chips, and without it this recipe will fail and I'll be loveless and sexless forever!" (side note, I'm married, so my husband gets crap meals from a can) What ever will you do? You go to Penzeys. They have EVERYTHING there, and if they don't have it, they'll find it for you. The people working there are incredibly nice and helpful, but not pushy. They have beautiful gift sets for that hard to find a gift for person. You know, the one who has everything, and buys everything he or she wants anyway. I bet he or she isn't going to buy SPICES! AHA! You've now one upped that person and can dance the victory dance. That is, after you get your groove on, because you found your cumin at Penzeys and kept your mojo intact. The only downer is the store looks kinda blah, like they ran out of creative ideas and just took a store front and stuck stuff in it, but so what, it's really the goods that stand out. Penzey's Spices is the best thing about Clackamas. And I love me some Clackamas. The store is in the strangest location, somewhere I'd never discover left to my own devices - sandwiched curiously between the Jenny Craig store and Home Town Buffet in the 82nd WinCo parking lot. Luckily, my mom from Seattle was privy to the spice purveyors from Cook's Magazine, and brought me along on a visit a few years ago. I don't buy spices anywhere but Penzey's anymore. They are head and shoulders in quality above anything you'll buy in a typical grocery store, and a much better bargain than anything else you'd find at New Seasons or Whole Foods. They have all your savory and baking basics, including some great dried parsley and chives that will bring your homemade scrambled eggs to a whole new date-impressing level. They have multiple kinds of cinnamon, cocoa, peppers, salts... confused? Just ask one of the employees, they all seem excited about what they're selling and knowledgeable. If you don't want to talk to anyone, each individual spice has a nice write-up, a sample to smell, and sometimes even a recipe. You can also grab a free catalog, which has all the information and ideas for all of their stock. The spice blends are also great fun. They're fun to experiment with, and you can buy small jars for just a couple bucks to find your favorites. Like I mentioned, the prices are very low, especially when you comparison-shop with the jars at any grocery store. Sign up for their mailing list and you'll get coupons for free spice jars, which is of course awesome. The store itself is clean and very appealing, with a crate scheme that makes you feel like you've been let loose on some magical pirate ship of deliciousness.
