I'm a long time fan of Peony's, back to 1992. The food is consistent and just as good as it ever was. My family loves the house chicken and the won ton soup with chili paste. The veggie chow mein and shrimp fried rice are always a must. Peony's is generous with their proportions too. We always have leftovers. They've moved locations a couple of times. Now they are located behind the Target center. A little tricky to find the first time, but easy after that. We do take out so I actually don't know what the dining area looks like. Design and lay out could be much more cozy and appealing. Get an interior designer to help you. Also no hard benches to sit on. You need firm, comfortable restaurant cushions. Food was really bad, we only ate the friend rice because everything else was inedible. Honestly first and last time. Noodles were basically drenched in soy sauce and super sticky and soggy and not in a good way at all. We are very happy to taste Peony's original recipe again. They used to be the busiest and best Chinese restaurant in our area before the relocation. After moving to their current location, everything went down hill, so we didn't even consider to eat there, and it was more than 5 years ago. Peony is our go to restaurant for Chinese food. The food is always fresh and delicious and the portions are huge! You have enough for two or three meals. Peony has great deals for lunch - you get a lot of food for a fair price. The shrimp in my lunch plate was tender and the vegetables were fresh and not overcooked. Everything is just a little bland, so you'll definitely be using the supplied soy sauce. My hubby got the Vegetable Fried Rice. He said it was good, but smaller than the last time we were here and the rice seemed a little stale. This place won't wow you, but it's a good lunch place if you're craving something different than fast food. And you even get a very good fresh fortune cookie when you're done. Have been here a few times for lunch. I've done it for dinner also but the prices get pretty high at entree level so I come more often during lunch for the specials. It is one of the better places in area for Chinese food although there are a few others that I like better for the done in experience. We just enjoyed the best hot & sour soup we've had in a long time, piping hot and full of flavors. We enjoyed both the garlic chicken--tender with crisp vegetables, and the Mongolian beef--very savory. We will be back to try more of their menu. The service was very efficient, friendly and fast. My husband and I went to Peony's for dinner for the 1st time last night. We have driven by many times never been. So we decided to try it. The food and staff were amazing!!!! The waitress was so sweet. Let me order from the lunch menu because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to eat all and it was still amazing. We still had left overs even with it being lunch portion. Been going to Peony since they opened in Murrieta in 1991. Sweet and Pungent chicken with 4 stars of heat. It has been the same that long. When Murrieta store closed we started coming to Temecula, again always the same. Today had craving for Sweet and Pungent Chicken. First bite I tasted something different. No pungent taste and no heat. I asked if they changed the recipe and he said new owners. So yes different recipe. NO!!!!! Such a disappointment!!!! New ownership, why would you change something that has been the same since 1991??? Maybe to save a dime or 2. Our waiter said lots of complaints since change of owners took over. Not good. I will have to go see if Lake Elsinore store has the old recipe still. Please please get that old recipe back!! read more

I like how they kept their kitchen spotless and for those that know how Chinese restaurants operate, this is no small feat given how much grease and prep work goes into making the food. Unfortunately, this is where all the niceties end. The food was horribly inedible! Ordered the sweet and pungent chicken thinking this would be a dish which contrast different flavors and textures into one. Instead, all I received was a mushy, overly sweet glob of chicken. It almost tasted like candied chicken jerky, a far cry from what I envisioned it tasting and experienced from other places. The food is awesome at peonies. I always get it to go and bring it home. The location is hard to find and once inside the seating table, tables and chairs are kind of cheap. The decor is basically nothing to speak of the lights are too bright. So there's really no ambience there. No need to sit there and eat the food. But it is very very good so I take it home. The restaurant wasn't busy so sitting inside wasn't an issue. One thing that stood out from the get go was the service. The staff here was nice, attentive and super efficient (5 stars). Peony menu has the usual selection that you can find in most Chinese restaurants. We opted for the lunch specials. It was a good deal as it included main, salad, rice and starter. The food arrived fairly fast. It was hot, freshly made and had good flavours. The fried rice had tad too much soy sauce mixed in as it was quite salty. The chicken skewers were very good. The chicken meat was tender and wasn't over cooked. Dish with veggies and shrimp was equally good. The only down side was the side salad. It was fresh but included iceberg lettuce only and lacked a presentation aspect. Other than that everything else was good. P.S. portions here are big so come in hungry :) read more

We have eaten here for years. So disappointed in everything we ordered. Both chicken dishes tasted the same and the chicken was tasteless and old . Salad had wilted lettuce. It's a quiet cute little place tucked in the corner on the top of the hill. I got the appetizer with a bunch of things on it. But the star of the show was the pork on a stick thing. Omg. At first, I felt like I was at an airport fast food area. Metal tables, plain chairs, nothing fancy. Then I noticed that none of the cooks were Chinese. Hmmmmm. My wife was ready to leave, but I had to taste the food to help out my fellow Yelpers. We ordered the wontons because a lot of the reviews said they were amazing. We also ordered the house special Chow Mein and Shrimp Fried Rice. The best thing we had was the hot tea. The wontons were ordinary. Soft cream cheese in a wonton. Pretty basic. Chow mein was tasteless. The portions are huge, but that's all that this place has going for it. The fried rice was boring, bland, uninspired. I have no idea where all the great ratings come from. It's probably the worst Chinese food I've had anywhere ever. Im not exaggerating. I had hope that maybe the fortune cookie would give me something yummy but it too was stale, and my fortune lame. Perfect way to end a mistake. I should have listened to my wife and left. If you don't believe me, go try it out. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I don't think so. read more

The food came out quick & hot! We're predictable eaters and ordered our faves: cashew chicken and orange chicken. Waiter came out frequently to ask if we needed more drinks or rice or anything else. We were stuffed since the family style portions are very generous. Our meals were exceedingly delish! We requested to go boxes. I have been going to Peony's since I was little. Every time I visit home, my friends k ow this is where I have to eat before going back to Orange County. I have suggested it to people from out of town and they just don't get it. It's nostalgic and I crave it.
