Totally came for the vibe after looking at pictures on Yelp. Since this restaurant is on the pricier side and the photos looks pretty and delicate, I was expecting the dishes to be overpriced. However, I was really surprised by how much food was served despite the pretty plating. I wouldn't say the dishes are authentic Chinese, but they are really delicious! Our waiter was really attentive and nice. But the food servers seemed to be in a hurry and simply drops the dishes on the table without properly arranging them. Once the plate was only 2/3 on the table and could easily been knocked off. They also spoke super fast and I couldn't hear a thing before running off. Definitely a pricier spot for Chinese take out, which is understandable when you step inside and see the ambiance, but during Covid19 times, the only ambiance I care about is the one I have at home. We ordered the following items for take-out and got it all promptly within about 30 minutes. Pick up was easy, although there is minimal parking out front. - Shrimp Egg Rolls (three pieces, cut into halves for $10). Overpriced, but very tasty. Crispy outside, succulent and flavorful inside. - Pan Fried Pork Buns (four for $14). Totally fine. Nothing remarkable. Solid pork to bun ratio. - Pork fried rice. This was $18 for an entree sized portion. This price is INSANE to me. Almost twenty dollars for rice??? The only reason why I ordered it was because my in laws wanted it and I couldn't argue. The flavor was fine, but as an Asian person though, fried rice that costs over $10 personally offends me. - Black Bean Noodles for $12. This was an even smaller portion than the rice. I'd describe it as an appetizer portion. The sauce was heavy on the salt, but not bad. For take out orders, the sauce comes in a separate container and is a very very generous portion, but then the noodle portion is tiny. We had a lot of leftover sauce. - Crispy Pork Belly for $19. This was well seasoned, fairly crispy (hard to keep the crispy in a shut plastic container), and a decent portion. I wouldn't mind ordering this again. - Pork & Shrimp Shumai (4 for $14). Again the price here was insane. You can get this from a real dim sum place for like $4. I can buy a frozen bag with over a dozen for $5. But the flavor was very good. I don't think I'd ever get take out from here again because of the prices. Maybe I might eat in if I felt a need to have Asian food in a fancy setting when the pandemic is over, but for now, there are better Chinese take out places with more options and more reasonable prices. read more

Peony Kitchen has an absolutely awesome menu! Their menu has so much variety and is bound to have an option you've never tried before. Eating at peony was a great experience to try delicious new twists on traditional Chinese classics such as dumplings, buns. fried rice, and dim sum. We ordered the 5 flavor pan fried buns ($15), squid ink baked rice ($18), truffle shumai ($14), & shrimp dumplings ($8). The food here is delicious. The flavored dumplings were interesting and you could really taste the unique flavor each dumpling offered. The squid ink baked rice offered a wonderful flavor and is topped with bacon. The dim sum was good though a bit overpriced. My main complaint with Peony were the prices. Everything here is pretty expensive, and on top of that they charge an automatic 18% gratuity. The service here was good and definitely warranted the 18%, but I could see this as an issue for other people who find 18% too high. Ultimately, Peony offers some cool options that makes dining here a unique experience. Although prices are a bit high, you're going to have some great quality food - just be aware that there is an automatic 18% gratuity. The décor here is really nice, and they even have a bar! My wife and I noticed this place probably a dozen times before coming in and now I wish we had done so sooner. I mean, I know why, we had always gone to Monsoon and past it while doing so and once to Weldon barber further west on Main Street but still, wish we had done so sooner. The Peking duck is excellent, as my picture indicates but everything we had was good, including the cock tails (also had the XLB and pork buns). I've had Peking duck in Hong Kong so I know that the skin is supposed to be crispy. I know that it's supposed to be served with tortillas (at least what I call them) and of course, the wonderful plum sauce. Why do I share this with you? Woohoo score for us! We had a lot of the appetizers. The cucumber salad was my favorite. I'm a sucker a good cucumber salad dont judge! Chili prawns were so so good. This review I have to give an honest opinion. My daughter's birthday as a custom in our house she selects a restaurant or food choice for her celebration. Her first choice was Queen Mary's Tea room because they were booked so far in advance we had to switch. For some reason the reservation was placed on me even though I didn't want it. She selected Peony;s reservation had to be done online. So I made the reservation 2 weeks in advance. So the day of the birthday celebration I received a call or a voicemail stating the restaurant closes at 3 PM so be there by 2:15PM. I called the restaurant back the young lady repeated the voicemail. At no point did I decline the reservation. As I was looking for parking I let my wife and daughter out to check in. The person who I talked to stated I had cancelled. As I got there I got scolded for cancelling the reservation. Honestly why would cancel driving like crazy to get there with my wife, two daughters and two grand children. If you close early don't allow people to schedule a reservation that may over lap your closing. Don't misrepresent the truth or lie. We basically got told to hurry, in a way get out. Treat your guest with much more respect. The food was great, the fried rice was exceptionally good. I am not sure I will visit again no matter how good the food. We went Sunday evening with a party of 12 for a birthday dinner, all adults and all enjoy adult beverages. Our reservation was for 7:30 p.m. most everyone arrived by 7:45. 8:30 came around and most of us were on our first or second beverage and waiting on our food. Much to our dismay we were told by our server that last call for alcohol was at 8:45 p.m. We couldn't believe our ears. We hadn't even yet received our food and yet they were ceasing the sale of alcohol? That's absurd. I'm 45 years old and in my entire life I've never heard of a restaurant doing that. Typically restaurants make the majority of their profits from alcohol which they mark up tenfold. Clearly this restaurant does not care about their alcohol sales. Which is fine of course unless it means you're cutting off 12 adults who are out for a birthday party and want to continue consuming cocktails and or glasses of wine. We asked our server to speak to the manager or the owner. The owner was a very nice man and seemed to see our side of the story. Which was that if they were going to cut alcohol off an hour into our reservation they should have told us that when we made the reservation as everyone in the restaurant industry knows that parties of eight or more typically dine for 2 hours or 2.5 hours. The owner agreed and we thought that we would be able to continue drinking throughout the meal. Instead they cut off alcohol sales at 9:00 p.m. instead of 8:45 p.m. effectively giving us an extra 15 minutes ... of course none of us left until about 10:00 p.m. when dinner was finally over. We were also notified an hour into our meal that the restaurant closes at 9:00 p.m. of course we weren't notified of that until right around 9:00 p.m. again ridiculous. Either cater to the people that are in your restaurant until they leave, or make sure everyone knows they must leave the restaurant at 9:00 p.m. or that alcohol sales cease at that point, in which case people will be able to make earlier reservations (or do what I will do next time which is make a reservation somewhere else). Great place with stunning decor. High quality food and service. I've been here several times by now. This time I came with the goal of trying new dishes and we got the tea smoked chicken, ma po tofu, bok choy with broth, and twice cooked pork. Chicken was nice and crispy and came with a ginger scallion oil sauce, ma po tofu came with some fish in it, which was a little strange but not to any detriment. Some cons: Twice cooked pork had way more veggies than actual pork, and the bok choy was fairly tasteless or at least, very subtle. Came here after being told the Peking duck is better than the one at Baron's, and wanted to test this theory for myself. After dining here, I would definitely say Peony Kitchen had the better experience! First impression walking in, the restaurant is beautiful! The decor and food presentation is all very nice. We had a reservation and were immediately seated. The menu serves upscale Chinese food, and has specials which are always changing. We ordered the sticky rice balls and five-spiced crispy duck, which every day is priced the same as the Monday special at Baron's. It came out of the kitchen in a timely manner, and tasted delicious! I'm sorry to see other reviews who weren't so happy with their experiences. I suppose it differs from having a reservation vs walking in without one. Tonight and for my own experience, it was a lovely experience. It could've been perfect but let me brake it to you gently. On the plus side, Our server went over and beyond my expectations. My BIL made the reservation and ordered everything for the family. Every entree was a hit. Loved the duck, fried chicken, cucumber salad , the rib eye fried rice-all that we had are delicious! You may bring a bottle of wine but there is a small fee requirement. We also brought a cake and our server was more than welcoming and, even brought us another round of utensils and plates. That was very nice. On the minus side, I got to see the restroom before getting ready to check out and it needs some tidying. Garbage can was over flowing, there was not any soap to wash hands with either. I was a little disappointed seeing that. May I suggest in between tidying while open for dining!? Please and thank you... Cleanliness should be all in line with the foods and drinks price tags. We are taking notes. One of my favourite Chinese restaurant in Bellevue! I love the range of authentic Chinese dishes here. The Tung Po Pork belly is so delicious and just melts in your mouth. The buns that accompany the pork belly are also so soft. We enjoyed every dish we ordered here. The eggplant & green bean, cold tossed noodles are also highly recommended. This place is not bad by any means, alright. I heard from someone that the place is inauthentic, and my experience today confirmed that. By that I mean, this is not an authentic Chinese restaurant. Being in the center of old Bellevue, this is a heavily Americanized Chinese fusion. The first dish that came to my table was, weirdly, the honey (mustard) walnut (black tiger) prawns. I know, such a fancy name makes it seem exceptional. I'm gonna be honest, the flavor was average. You can find more flavorful honey walnut prawns in cheaper Chinese restaurants. However, the one served by Peony was very pretty though, I'll give you that. Also, the crunch from the crackers and the prawns themselves were also good. Maybe it was just for lunch, but I wish the portions were bigger. Just when my first non-appetizer dish was almost finished, came the also-fancy-named "English squid ink baked rice". Like my waitress told us, there ain't no protein in there, but it still packs quite a punch. It was fragrant and the texture was really nice, so this is something that I'd definitely order over a white rice. That said, I have not yet tried the fried rice so maybe give it a try because there's a lot of room for much more flavors than one in the baked rice. The next that (fortunately) came before we ate up all the rice was the humbly-named "slow-braised beef short ribs". Also came at the same time was the "truffle seared scallop". Not sure to call that one a humble or an honorific name LOL. The short ribs was already cold when it came to my table. It was pretty good, but I'm gonna spoil it, Baron's got way better ribs. The scallop was also delicious, but I think the "truffles" are just "truffle oils". I don't see a single slice of a truffle, not even the littlest pieces. The food that came LAST was the appetizer. Did they change the definition of the word appetizer in the dictionary recently? The Peony's signature eggrolls, the most disappointing dish of the bunch. The shrimps were lacking flavor and somehow, it just doesn't fit my taste. The sauce didn't help much either. By the way, the Bai Mu Dan (White Peony) tea was really good and fragrant. Sorry to tell you this, but that tea is not of real leaves, it was clearly a packaged one with the branding visible outside the pot. Service was okay. Prefer to not go to details, but I'll tell you this: it's probably because there was only one server handling so many tables on lunch. If you eat at Peony's might as well make really good use of your servers because they charge an automatic 18% service tip. Bottom line - don't hesitate to call on them whenever you need something! Parking is easy. And don't get the roasted "whole five-spiced crispy" duck. My waitress tried to convince me that conceptually it's basically a "Peking Duck", but it's not. I enjoyed my dinner here but do have mixed feelings about it. I liked the diverse tea menu and easy parking nearby. If you are a vegetarian there are some sides you can pull together and some mains, but not as much choice as I would have thought. If you eat fish there are many more options opened up. Know that the restaurant is set up family style so it is best if your group plans to share dishes. I really enjoyed the sizzling rice soup. The mu shu tacos were fun but one of my favorite parts of mu shu is the super thin pancake and these were thick to support eating it as a taco of course. When we would get his attention, he was pretty dismissive about everything. His comment? We are busy. Busy?!?!?!? There are literally 4 occupied tables in the whole restaurant. I get it all. I am giving restaurant a 3 star, I would give it a 2.5 star but I am not able, for a couple of reasons. The first and foremost one of our dishes came at least 15 minutes after the other two maybe 20. The waitress came by and said oh you do not have the broccolini dish. Then even after that it was ten minutes. I guess either it was not put in or the cooks missed it either way the service was not good. We had long waits it was only a lunch and we ordered off the lunch menu. I got the feeling it did not matter that we waited for it that long. We had already finished the first dish and only had a bite of the second dish left. This rather honestly left a very poor impression on me. After that the tip was added already to my bill. I do not like that. I am more then able to do math and the tip is figured based on quality of service of which I had mediocre. Now on to the food. It was good. We had three dishes one Garlic Crispy Chicken, sautéed broccolinni chicken and one small eats grilled BBQ pork. I enjoyed the Garlic Crispy Chicken. The Chicken was Crispy and tender at the same time. I highly recommend it. The grilled BBQ pork was awesome though for some will find it to fatty. My wife does not like that I do. The only improvement would be some sort of hot space like a hot mustard or a hot sauce to offset some of the sweetness that the sauce on the pork has. I give this dish a four star but would be five if it had something to help offset the sweetness. I will also highly recommend this small plate even without the hot mustard. The broccolinni Chicken was my wife's pick. She very much enjoyed it. This is not a dish I would normally order so I am using her recommendation since though I found it enjoyable it was only mediocre to me. Fun and creative way to modernize traditional Chinese food and the executed it deliciously. -Half tea-smoked free range chicken- bomb!!!!! Even the way they presented it to your table was exciting. The skin was nice and crispy, meat wasn't dry and had a wood/smoky aftertaste. -Pork belly in clay pot- Also bomb! But sad that it only came with 3 pieces for $20. The pork belly had some rich and savory flavors that balanced out the warm bao. A little fatty but it was worth it. -Ribeye steak fried rice- just okay! The ribeye was sadly overcooked to a medium when we requested a med rare. But the actual fried rice was basic but still good. This place is one of the better upscale Chinese food places in Bellevue. Granted it's not the traditional Chinese cuisine, the food is still amazing. We had a blast with the ambiance and food here. Service was equally spectacular. Our server did get one of our orders wrong but promptly replaced it with the correct one without any fuss. Of note, I especially loved the squid ink seafood noodle -it's such a unique dish that you likely won't find it elsewhere. I'm not sure why there are others on here, especially the "yelp elites," that crap on this place. Sure you don't like fusion food, or maybe you've had a few ordering mistakes; that doesn't mean this place is without merit. Super fun spot! Great for family and sharing, as well as individually for their week day lunch specials. Their hot sour soup is pretty authentic, and bean noodles with beef were an unexpected favorite! They really are as aesthetic as they were delicious, especially these fried pork buns. Xiao long bao - so good and different, It was 5 flavors and you could really taste a difference with each. Eggrolls- crispy and flavorful, the seafood tasted fresh. Peking duck - not traditional and it was good. The roasted lemon and herbs really balanced the richness of the duck. Crème brulee trio- not too sweet which I prefer and ate it all. It was a little expensive but definitely worth it. We also ordered alcohol and tea. It is not your typical Chinese restaurant. Service is superb and the food is fresh and so tasty.
