I caught a nail in my tire and SPECIFICALLY asked for a patch once the nail was removed. I was given a plug! Ben Green(claims to be the manager) says that they only do patches, until I showed him the tire. He, then, began mumbling about being fired for the use of a plug. I asked for a discount, since the tire did not even have to be removed to perform the job. He again responded with mumbling. I asked for the corporate number. Went on with my day running errands, when I arrived at my appointment time Kristina the clerk looked at me odd. She said we canceled your appointment, we don't have your tire in stock. I never received a phone call, email, or text stating so. Instead I rushed my day to be prompt!!! Thanks for nothing, I will not be back. Left very disappointed not only in the lack of customer service but that she didn't even care or offer any suggestions to another store that would have my tire in stock. I brought my mother's car into Pep Boys of Carteret over the weekend on July 23 because she needed to fix up her car in order to pass inspection. She needed a new muffler and intermitent pipe and center pipe along with a new coil connector and I also asked them to do a oil change, tire rotation and a tune-up along with inspect the car to see what else is needed if anything. I asked for this inspection & tire rotation in the online appointment form and in person when I dropped off the car. I had to leave it overnight as it was Sunday and they had to wait on some parts which was completely fine. They called me on Mon evening letting me know the car was ready but I was at work so I wasn't able to pick it up until Tuesday morning. I picked it up and brought the car back home to my mother and noticed that the fluid levels(windshield & coolant) were basically empty but had some on hand in my garage so I filled it myself. I then noticed that the tires were not rotated as requested online and in person so I called them and spoke to Ronald who is the service manager and he told me to bring it back in which I did. I won't call him a mechanic but Ronald had one of his service techs (Julian) take the car into the shop and do the tire rotation which took about 20 minutes. My wife and I waited in the parking lot the entire time and Julian drove the car back out to the parking lot. He backed it into the parking spot so I would only see the left side of the car which was odd but didn't pay it much mind. Ronald (service mgr) gave me the keys and I was back on my way. I drove the car right back to my mother's house which is 3 minutes away and when I parked the car I noticed that my wife was staring at the right side of the car. When I got out my wife asked me what happened to the bumper. When I looked at the rear bumper it had a big dent in it and the bumper was also detached from the car. There were also white scratches and scuff marks on the bumper and the tail light. The white didn't look like paint but more so light concrete or cement. I immediately jumped back into the car and went back to Pep Boys. I went by the garage and noticed that there are concrete poles on each side of the shop doors so it looks like the tech hit one of those. My mom's car is an 05 Sentra which is basically a go-cart (it's tiny) so he must've been annoyed that he had to stop working on another car in order to do that tire rotation. I say this because it's a deep dent and not just a graze. He must've been going pretty fast for it to leave such a mark and almost rip the bumper off. Why is there any need to drive a customer's car like this? The service manager (Ronald) filed a claim and said that they(pep boys insurer) will call me to have someone look at the damage on the car to see if they are responsible to fix it but I have yet to receive any calls and it's been a few days now. I have called Pep Boys Customer Service but they just keep saying that someone will call me. I told the service manager and customer service that it is unsafe for my mother to drive the car like this since the bumper is basically almost touching the tire. All of the techs there seem really young & unprofessional and It really shows in their quality of work or should I say lack thereof. I've gone to mechanics for almost 25 years now and this is by far the worst experience that I've had by far. I highly doubt I'd ever go back to another Pep Boys I don't care how close they are. So long story short. Brought the car in for repairs and get the car back needing more repairs....Awesome! read more

I called in regarding full synthetic oil change for 2020 Range Rover sport. Over the phone lady told me $155 after taxes. Drive down to pep boys and after they check the cars vin, they states it will be $186. Okay great. 30 minute later; they come up to us and tell us we gave them the wrong vin number and the filter is different and started to blame us. Now as a customer and giving the cars vin number, how is that our fault? Had to pay $220 in order to take the car. As we paid for our oil change, a customer walked in stating they got an oil change 2 days ago and the oil was maxed out. Ben had a nasty atitude. read more

Each time the mechanic's were knowledgeable, professional & very polite. Scheduling an appt. Was with ease. Truck was taken in, serviced in a timely matter within time promised. I have contacted Pep Boys nearly everyday about a work van that they charged $8,000.00 to fix and it broke down a day later. Our van got broken into in their Long Island location. We had the van towed to the Carteret location where it has been sitting since February. DO BETTER PEP BOYS!!! Had my car towed to this place because they are right in town. Bad move! Explained that there seemed to be electrical issues like the radio cutting out when I opened the windows, etc, and wanted to find out if there was a blown fuse or wiring not connecting. They sold me their "diagnostic" test totalling $117 and said everything will be looked at. A while later they called to tell me I needed a battery. I knew I needed a battery prior to going to them, that's not why I brought the car there and I certainly didn't agree to pay them $117 for a battery check! On my receipt the reason for coming in was "cranks no start", again, that's NOT why I brought the car there. I asked for the report that this diagnostic test should have produced and was told there was none. If I'm paying $117 I better receive a detailed report showing a pass/fail of everything that was checked! If you need a battery check, most garages will do it for free; if you need a diagnostic, Auto zone will do it for free. If you need a battery and are a AAA member, it is much more convenient and cheaper to get a 3-year battery from AAA! If you are female, don't go there because they will try to nickel & dime you and you will leave with the same problem or will get ripped off! Do not go to this place for anything! Stopped in for an oil and fuel filter change in my 450. Dropped my truck off and shortly after they called saying it would be $640 which is outrageous. The lady proceeded to argue with me on the phone. I go pick my truck up and get the same service done at another business and it cost $282.51which is normal for a diesel pick up. These people are robbing people left and right. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If I could give them zero stars I'd give them zero stars but I'm forced to give them at least one. read more

My mother was in the Carteret store today. I was on the phone while she was getting it replaced. The employee blammed my mother that her new battery that she bought from pep boys in Carteret in September was dead. They told her she left the lights on and that's what caused it. AAA confirmed that it was a bad battery and not her fault. They were extremely rude and disrespectful. The battery was under warranty. My mother is 70 years old and doesn't need to be treated like that. This is no way to treat a customer. read more

Mechanics are inexperienced and tried to deny an oil change service because they didn't know what to do with the oil catch can. I thought they were on their phone to Google what to do, but in fact - they were texting. I went in for a tire repair due to finding a nail in the tire. I go in and am told it would cost $25 to plug the tire, cool. The mechanic who is assisting me explains that the nail is so close to the edge of the tire that it's not worth fixing because the plug will eventually come out. He suggested to get a new tire. I told him to put the spare on and left. I come to my usual mechanic and he explained the nail didn't even puncture the tire!!! What a waste of time and a disappointment. read more

Staff gave me wrong replacement parts for my car and truck. When my wife attempted to return air filters they argued with her that I was wrong and they were the right size even with the old filters with with her that were clearly wrong. Rude and horrible customer service. I had to go there myself to straighten out and clear it up. Never apologized was rude to my wife. Can tell why you work in an auto parts store. Not to smart. I overheard them doing it to other customers when I was in the line as well. Will never be returning. I wasn't going to leave a review, but I had to after what the in-store customer service rep said.....I was told this place doesn't give good service but since I live in the area, I'll give them a chance again. I was soo wrong, I wouldn't even give this place 1 star, they should get none. I took my old car last year to get a wheel alignment at Pep boys in Carteret, the person who worked on the car left body odor all on my leather seats and the alignment wasn't great. I don't think these guys wash there uniforms or put covers over the seats. After washing and cleaning my seat it was very hard to get the smell out, bc the leg part of the seat also smelled. So I had to always put air freshener in the car....... Now....lets fast forward to this year..... I brought my new car in early this morning to get a life time wheel alignment. I'm 2nd online out of 3 people at 7:30 am. He says since I don't have a appointment, I would have to pick up the car around 2-3 pm. I said fine, since I'm in the area. I told him I only have 1 concern. The person who worked on my car last year, body odor stuck to my car seat, can you just make sure the person who works on the car covers up the seat good and doesn't make it smell. He says "it's going to be very hot today, maybe you should bring back your car another time." Now I don't know how someone else would feel, if they gave them an answer like this, but this is a great disservice to the community and anyone who comes to Pep boys. This service center does not give quality service and the customer service is terrible. As a member of the community, I brought my car to Pep boys of Carteret to support my community business, but since they lack quality and integrity. I will be taking my business elsewhere. On Monday we were on the New Jersey Turnpike and had a flat. Not realizing that you cannot be towed on the turnpike by AAA. After debating with the tow truck company we were able to get the tire fixed the next day at this location. The customer service was excellent and they went above and beyond the call of duty. They are crooks here- the "manager" Mack takes over service requests and bs's his way to up sell and up charge customers. This isn't the first time they've pulled this kind of crap on me and my wife. I had to ge a flat tire replaced, and the manager "refused" to service my car unless I got all 4 tires replaced because it's a 4wheel drive car. Bs. My acura got new two new tires from him 6 months ago. While I was waiting for my car, there was another customer that was complaining that ac wasn't working after a "deluxe" repair and recharge last year. That he paid extra for the service based on the manager's recommendations and that it stopped working in a year. The service here is poor and I hate that people in emergency need get raped the way they do here. Pep boys carteret clearly does not care for the community they serve. Staff is respectful and polite, but they are severely understaffed for the amount of business they receive. An oil change took three hours (still waiting in the waiting room, actually) even WITH an appointment. Not sure what the hold up is (and this was not communicated to me, either -- even though they have my number and I've spent much of this time in the waiting area), but an oil change for my car typically takes an hour max. At the least, they should give you an accurate estimate when you drop off your car, and they should be held to that estimate. read more

Great experience from the time I walked in to leaving. Staff were very helpful and attentive. I came in shortly after I realized I was leaking gas coming off the NJ turnpike......I'm not from the area. The guys there were super helpful especially Mack, who answered all of my questions. It was upsetting having to find out I had to leave my car in NJ for several days due to a hold up on the parts (no fault to Pep boys) but Mack and the rest of the staff kept me up to date on the progress of the car while it was there and did all they could to get it repaired as soon as they could. Since they were so nice and helpful I even asked that they perform an oil change since my car was already in the shop. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area. I live in Brooklyn but I may just go back to have some other repairs because of how great their service was and they were also SUPER helpful in working out a better price for me. Yeah great employee except once I started to talk about how my car was acting up, he started to talk about planes and how he wanted to own a plane. So I asked him if he could give me his managers name and he said gotta fly and left. I brought a tire in that had a small chunk of metal in the center of the tread. I told the service manager about it and he immediately said he doesn't think he can fix it, even before seeing it. I wheeled it in and he said "ehhhh no way, that needs a new tire" I told him the tire had 80% life left. He said again it's unfixable. So I asked him to try. He then looked again and said " this tire has all sorts of other problems too"... it did not. He finally took it in, put it against the wall at 9am. heard nothing so I decided to call at 1pm. His counterpart who I thought was a customer because he was just wearing a t shirt. Said "oh I'm supposed to tell you the tire is unfixable". I said when were you going to tell me this? He said " I'm telling you right now". So I went to go pick up the tire where it didn't move spots in the 4 hours. Metal was still in the tire. They did nothing but waste my time. Then tried selling me a tire again. I took it to the gas station down the street. No problems no concerns patched and on my way in 10 min. 860 miles later. Tire is still holding strong. If they didn't want to patch the tire they could of just said so. So I didn't waste my time. I am a mechanic back home and if I ever heard my service manager try to take advantage of a customer that way I would bring it up the chain and have him talked to. If I had been a regular unknowing customer I would of been suckered into a new tire for no reason. very dishonest. read more

Never got a call..walked in here at 8 and my old tire on rim was still sitting where I left it 3 hours ago. They took it into the back while I was standing there waiting to throw a fit. 5 Stars - my car broke down on the NJ turnpike scary when you are a female alone - the tow truck driver took me to pep boys. I was upset they said dont worry - within 15 minutes they said a bolt on my alternator was broken and they needed to get a bolt. I asked Elton some questions about bolts, he explained to me how it could have broken. The manager Derek said your car will be done quickly. $18.50 later I was on the rode and happy!!! Pep boys definitely don't care about customers. Had my car break down sat along the NJ Turnpike. The tow truck driver told me they can tow me to the next exit and drop it off at pep boys. Didnt want my car dropped at pep boys but i had no choice. Last time i went to pep boys they lowered my car onto the oil catcher and my transmission pan was punctured along with my car sliding on the car lift totally damaging my mirror. So i reluctantly agreed to wait. So they fixed the problem with my car but created another one. Once i left Carteret my car's check engine light went on and it was sputtering. Called them let them know and i set another appointment. Called back to see if i could have it looked at in Toms River. They said ok so i did. They diagnose the problem and told me. I told its because of what they did. Manager had to get the ok to work on it.Of course Store #1053 said it was nothing they did I understand my car was broke but it wasn't sputtering and the check engine light wasnt on before i got to pep boys. If there was a way to give -5 stars I would. I made an apt online for tires. When I got there the man at the service desk said online appts don't matter and the wait would be 3 hours. Then he asked what tires I needed and I handed him my phone to show him the order and order number. He then proceeded to use his other hand not holding my phone and dig for gold up his nose. He then switched hands and placed my phone in his nose picking hand and proceeded to tell me the tires I preordered for $400 that showed in stock weren't in stock but he had super expensive tires he would give me super cheap. I took back my phone that was probably as clean as a toilet at the moment and left. I would never go here again. To simply put how horrible their mechanic service is over there, if you value your car and want to avoid extra expensive. Go somewhere else! But to go into detail, I came in for a tire replacement back in September and the mechanic informed me the battery needed to be replaced. Took about an hour and change to get the new tire and went on our way. Next day I go ahead and went to an autozone to purchase a new battery when they informed me that I had a warranty with PEPBOYS and that I can get that battery replaced with little to no charge. Okay, head back to pepboys and explained that I had a warranty with them to which they replaced the battery and so they did. I mean let's not forget they were the one who informed me about this crappy battery in the first place. Two months later, car stops working, dies in the middle of the road where I had to get it towed back home. Thinking this car is causing more issues by every visit. I finally bring it back to a DIFFERENT shop and the mechanic took out the battery and showed me that there was a crack and that's where all my problems are coming from. When I came back to pepboys to replace this second crappy battery, I was told that I no longer have a warranty and that there is physical damage to this battery and can not be replaced. I had a bad experience at this place. This past weekend I had an appointment at 3:00pm. Once I arrived I purchased 4 new tires for my SVU and an associated advised me my Vehicle will be ready by 5:00 PM. Therefore I decided to take a walk around the plaza since I had time to kill and didn't need to be on my next appointment until 6:00pm. I headed back to my vehicle around 4:15 pm, I noticed my vehicle didn't have any of the new tires on they were just laying on the ground and the associates there where all busy watching the game. I immediately called for a Manager and to my surprise there wasn't one on shift. I was highly upset and the associate didn't even made the situation better, gave me attitude and told me I should of told him I needed to be somewhere else at 6:00pm than walks away. When clearly he stated my vehicle would be done by 5:00pm. I felt I shouldn't discuss my day with anyone. Once I got my vehicle back, missed my appointment and went home I noticed my rim caps where missing. The associate never placed them back correctly and secure them. Now am out more money to replace them. So much for helping locals business stores. They are unprofessional, poor customer service, never got an apology for their delay and rudeness. I would not recommend this place to anyone at all. After talking to the manager and coming to agreement. The establishment has changed my mind and I am fully satisfied with all the employees there. They where very respectful understanding and worked together to resolve the mater. read more

I made an appointment online for tires. Over an hour after I dropped the car off they said the tires the online form chose were wrong and tried to knock me down to some cheaper Nkia tires at a higher price. The only way the store could save my business was to give a deep discount on Hankook tires equivalent to the ones I originally chose in a different size. After all that, a 4 hour ordeal for some tires, I hit the road to go home and now my car pulls to the right. I called up and their only response is that "the alignment is under warranty for 3 months." It seems like their business model is to muck up your order and then keep you around with discounts. Never go here. Not for an oil change, windshield wiper fluid or change for a dollar. I know I will NEVER be back. AUTOZONE is right down the road. read more

Myself and my family use this pep boys all the time and we love the manager, Mac, who is very friendly. They drove to another location to get the part we needed, stayed late on a Saturday night working on our vehicle, when they couldn't fix it that night we were driven around by an employee in his personal vehicle looking for a hotel. Expect to be waiting for hours at this PEPBOYS. It doesn't matter what kind of maintenance your having performed it will take minimum 2 to 3 hours unless your there when store opens then it may take you less then 2 hours for oil change. Today i dropped off my car at 1:06pm for a simple oil change I went shopping had lunch and decided to call and see if car was ready the time is 320 pm not to my suprise rep tells me my car is next lol. I finally pick car up at 411pm that is 3 hours and 11min for a 10 min oil change (WOW). I think they hire there mechanics straight out of school and they practice on your car. I live in Carteret and have been here several times only because of good sales they run but it comes with a price which is MY TIME. Anytime I plan on doing a simple oil change I look at it as a field trip since it will take more then two hours I usually drop car off go shopping and catch a bite then car should almost be ready and forget about any other maintenance such as tire change you better have a sleeping bag or get a hotel room if your from out of town. Very poorly managed you figure they would have one dedicated spot just for oil changes and any simple 10 minute jobs. I rather pay 50% more and take it to jiffy lube where I know it will be quick service. This Pepboys has been like this since it first opened so this tells me that Headquarters doesnt value its custmers. Clearly you guys don't care about your customers starting from the top all the way down. On a positive note if your going to buy something from store the sale reps are helpful and quickly ring you up. read more

I wish I could give this place a even less of a star. I was there for over 3 hours. and I simply came here because I need a my tires switched. As i am waiting and I can hear the nasty conversations that the employees where having about things they have done the night before. As well as them talking about waiting to do my car because a Mazda was better looking then mine. I saw unprofessional behavior when picking up the phone and telling the person on the phone "what" and "what are you saying right now" while having the customer on speacker... so many employees standing wrong it's no wonder why only two cars are being taken care of at a time..
